    Lunch & learn
    Lucy T.

I've always been told that Goodwill was an "expensive" secondhand store, that's why I never shopped here until this past week. I attended a lunch & learn here then decided to take a look around since I learned a lot of good thrifting tips. This store doesn't look too big on the outside, but once I came inside it was huge! As part of the lunch and learn, I got to look at the warehouse portion of the store too. It was huge! There were so many items back there! When I got to the store portion, I tried on some Athleta leggings and lots of cute dresses. I ended up buying two dresses for only $6.99 each! I love both of them! Most of their items are at a set price for all items no matter what brand the item was. Like $6.99 for all dresses. Some high end items might have been priced higher though, but not by more than a few dollars! Seeing all the donations really made me want to declutter all the stuff I rarely use at home and let other people find their treasure

Compared to the Goodwills in Athens & Madison, this one is great. I found a good bit of stuff & could've left with even more.

Good hidden gems! Found a few name-brand items. And there were a lot of sale items still with the colored tag sale.

I use to not care much for Goodwill, but I went the other day and it's much more clean and organized then it has ever been before.

Programs offered are: Day Center - Daytime shelter where women and children can come to get out of the elements, get meals, have access to showers, access to laundry rooms (if available), get clothing, or ask for everyday basic needs (ex: pads, sanitary wipes, sanitizer, toothbrushes/toothpaste, soap, socks, etc). Women and children can stop by during the day to ask for available items without actually staying at the shelter. There are only a limited amount of spaces to stay overnight, but the day center allows access to care for the basics. ELC (Early Learning Center) which is a childcare facility. This is currently under a remodel (looks amazing btw) that should be opening back up by spring or summer. ***Note - They are in need of a couple more committed, caring and enthusiastic teachers for their ELC to better serve the number of children they care for. I believe you can apply on Indeed. Stepping Stones (overnight shelter). Women (unaccompanied) and mother's with children utilize this service with a focus to moving to permanent housing. Safe Haven - Permanent Housing for individuals with mental illness (severe) Pathways also has case managers, social workers, life skills classes, bingo, resources to assist with goals, educational programs, etc. The goal is to reach and achieve independence. DONATIONS - donations make a HUGE difference for the individuals being helped and cared for by Pathways. You can visit their website or social media to see what needs they may have. You can donate food, clothes, shoes, hygienic products, etc. There is also a particular Goodwill you can donate to and mention Pathways. A few items I have noticed that would be beneficial or that are low are: ponchos/rain jackets, razors, brushes and combs for textured hair, hair products for textured hair, tissue, clothing of larger sizes, underwear, pull ups, towels, etc. You can find out how to help or volunteer by visiting their website or social media. I have found several businesses actually give their employees the option to volunteer in place of some of their work days during the year. All of the staff members I have come in contact with have been wonderful with the people with the shelter, those that just stop by, interns, volunteers, you name it.

Charity Fund is a registered public charity based in Birmingham, Alabama. While we serve our local community, we have also helped individuals far beyond our immediate reach. We aim to make the most impactful and efficient use of our resources by doing many small things (like $10 impromptu meal cards for short-notice giving), moderate efforts (such as distributing dozens of meals in areas where homelessness is high), and occasionally larger efforts (assisting families with their living expenses or vehicle repairs) especially for those experiencing discrimination, oppression, or hate.
