It's an interesting historic cemetery. I like this little town and I wanted to stop in and explore the cemetery. Glad we did.

The Last Spike - Seven Magic Mountains across Las Vegas Boulevard from the Last Spike.

A historically cool landmark…read more.. While we were hiking with Norm in Las Vegas, he mentioned The Last Spike. It sounded so awesome... it's a significantly important spot where the two teams of railroad track builders met and completed their mission! Alana and I set out to find The Last Spike. We followed the Yelp directions and walked from Las Vegas Boulevard to the railroad track, across and south of the Seven Magic Mountains. We were unable to find the marker. However, I found some loose, rusty spikes. Alana explained that they are dislodged with the vibration of the trains on the tracks...wow! Anyway, using Google maps, Alana found the informational sign across from where The Last Spike should be. It's on the same side of the road as Seven Magic Mountains and south of it. Hopefully, you'll be able to find it if you decide to take a look. It's an interesting piece of history !

Las Vegas Blvd to the railroad tracks over uneven desert sand, rocks, a small trench, cacti, and other things. It would have all been okay if I hadn't been doing this with recently bruised ribs! Sadly, we didn't even need to be out this way! After safely getting back to the car, I took a look on Google and found the right location. When in doubt, Google it! It is south of the location pin on Yelp. If you are coming from the Seven Magic Mountains (or Las Vegas), head south and it is on the same side of the road. If you pass the train bridge which crosses the road, you've gone just a little too far. This Last Spike is Nevada Historical Marker 195. This location is near where workers drove the last spike on January 30, 1905. It's always good to learn a little history. This was a neat piece of history to learn! There is a gravel path where you can drive right up to the sign. The Kia Soul made it up just fine. If you have doubts about driving on it, you can park near the entrance. There was a huge silver sign that we didn't see, maybe it is now gone? It said, "Track crews constructing West from Salt Lake City met track crews constructing East from Los Angeles". This sign should have been visible when we wandered to the tracks. I hope you will find this more easily than we did! I must say, we did have quite the adventure!!

I love the little bit of climbing we can do, the views we find, and as always, the people who come with us. I haven't visited this trail in so long, so I don't have fresh or new commentary. It's been over 8 years since I've been here. All the photos I see I shared here are with my old dog, who passed away, and maybe one day I'll return with my current dog.

Since there isn't really an official trail to follow, I'm glad that I had someone who knew where to go. Even though it's June, there is still snow in parts of Mount Charleston due to the amount of rain that we had in the past few months. The snow is melting, so there was lots of water to see on this hike, which I loved. My friend, her dog, and I crossed quite a few areas with running water, so I was glad to have waterproof boots. It was also helpful to have hiking poles, as there were parts of the trek that they came in handy, notably when we encountered some snow to get to the falls. Big Falls itself did not disappoint; it's a beautiful sight! We had it to ourselves, too, which made this hike even better. We did see a couple of people on our way back to the parking area, but it's definitely not crowded like Mary Jane Falls or Cathedral Rock. Our hike was about 3.2 miles round-trip. Be advised that the amount of running water will depend on the weather and time of year; our timing was just right today.

The area is known as the Three Kids Mine where maganese was mined in an open pit. The name comes from the three times when mining was busy--World War I, World War II, and Korea/Cold War mining. The open pit mine is 300 feet deep. There were 7 large "tanks" used to process the manganese ore. Someone decided to do some art in one of the tanks and spray painted a Wheel of Fortune copy with different wording. All 7 of the tanks are covered with graffiti. Some of it is very well done and some is just spray painting to leave your mark. There is a lot to explore if you enjoy seeing the better tagging. I did not follow the directions I read on Yelp. When I arrived, the gate was open and I drove in. There is a porta potty inside the gate and a portable hand washing sink. As I walked, I saw that I could have driven the site if I wanted because there are tracks other people have driven. It was better just to walk and enjoy some of the graffiti, find the mine, and then walk back to my 4x4. I am of two minds about the site. It is both off putting yet attractive in a unique way. I'm glad I finally stopped to see it. When I got home, I got a satellite image from Google Earth from March 2015 and you can see the whole area and the tank with the Wheel of Misfortune. Without that, it's hard to know which tank had the orignal art from which the name came.
