I believe they've only been open for a couple of months, nonetheless a cool little place with a great 'vibe'. I had the seaweed app and the goat cheese app, the monk fish and a panna cotta dessert. The monk was great, the others were good. I hear the menu changes pretty frequently. I gave 4 stars based on the overall experience. I ate at the bar and was thus served by several folks. Without exception all were excellent. The drinks were very good as well. I believe I had something called 'cant think of the name of it'. That was the actual name of the drink. Really great. I've eaten at Goodkind twice. The first visit was really nice while the second visit was just so-so. During my first visit, my friend and I sat at the beautiful center bar and ordered two drinks I can't remember the name of, along with two lobster bisques. The bisque was delicious, light and flavorful with decent-sized chunks of lobster. For my entree, I had the currywurst. From what I recall, this dish was reasonably priced at $13 and very filling. Good flavors throughout as well. Currywurst had just the right amount of spice and was nicely complemented by the side of fried potatoes. At my most recent visit last Friday night, my husband and I ordered drinks and a fried calamari appetizer. The appetizer was huge and consisted of not just fried calamari rings but also fried onion peels and slices of lemon. Deep fried lemons seemed weird at first but ended up being super refreshing and tasty. For a main, I ordered the carbonara. This may seem absurd but it was almost a little too gourmet/foodie for my taste. I wasn't necessarily expecting a calorie-bomb, chain restaurant rendering of carbonara but I was hoping for at least some cheese and cream. The dish was cooked nicely, and you could tell someone put a lot of heart into it, but it lacked the basic elements of carbonara that most people seek when ordering this dish, except for maybe the pepper and pancetta. My husband ordered the scallops. They were perfectly cooked and looked beautiful. But they were just scallops over some lentils in the end. I really want to love Goodkind since it's so close to home, so I'll probably give it another go or two or three. I love Milwaukee. I love Milwaukee restaurants. I love supporting Milwaukee and its restaurants. I was excited to go to Goodkind tonight. I've heard great things. The space is great--cozy, eclectic, colorful without being overwhelming--and the service folks have a knowledgeable way about them. It drew a good crowd, too--a nice mix of older and younger, etc. Felt good to be there. And the host was terrific. The highlight of the meal was the drinks. I had a cocktail that was sublime. My partner had a great saison. Both were outstanding. The food, however, was much discussed after the meal. We started with calamari, admittedly a banal choice. But we had heard good things. It's true that the calamari was tender; however, there was very little of it (4 small pieces, maybe) and more of the fried onions and a few fried lemons. My honest suggestion for the chefs: Consider using preserved lemons and not fried ones in order to try to cut the fried bit somewhat. There were lots of "fried nothing" bits on the plate, too. It was disappointing. The Caesar salad was good. The anchovies were bright and appealing. Probably the highlight of the meal. We finished with the crab pasta dish. Here is where my husband and I were most disappointed. We love Dungeoness crab and weren't expecting a big pile of it for $18. But the crab was cold, piled on a heavy red sauce with extremely spicy pepperoni. I love red sauce. I love pepperoni. I love pasta. In fact, I love all the ingredients in this dish; however, it was completely unbalanced and just odd. I thought to myself, "Well, maybe we just ordered the wrong things tonight." But then I got to thinking some more: A restaurant of this quality, with this following, shouldn't have "wrong things" on its menu, period. This dish reads like, "Hey! What do I have left over in my fridge? Let me throw it together because I'm tired and don't want to think of how to use these ingredients to make sense together but damn I'm hungry so just feed me already." And I really, REALLY wanted to like it. So, overall, two stars is proper for my experience. The place is charming; the drinks are great. The food, though--and I know I'm an outlier for the reviews on Yelp--is not so great. I appreciate the lower price point, but a bit more thought and care could be taken with the composition of the dishes. The good: -everything I tasted was something that I had never tasted before -the fried chickpeas were delicious -I like the ambiance The bad: -I ordered the "Coinpurse" as a drink, it had rum which is my favorite, but it tasted like black licorice, which is not a flavor I enjoy -my halibut was over cooked and the red quinoa it came with was very sweet, which isn't to my liking I would return to try a different seasonal menu or brunch, but would not order the drink or entrée again. First time here and we loved our waitress--she helped us through the menu and explained the food to us in very tantalizing ways. All of the small plates that we tried, we loved. The drinks were very unique and delicious. Our server was extremely attentive and we never had empty water glasses. We haven't been to an establishment where the bartenders were as friendly and engaging as at Goodkind. They were more than helpful in assisting us with our selections of specialty cocktails. They know their craft from mixing a drink to the find art of conversation. Even while extremely busy. The food was excellent. I had the scallops at the recommendation of a couple who was eating at the bar. Great choice. Overall, good meal, GREAT cocktails. Unrecognizable transformation from the old pizza joint that previously occupied the building! The service was adequate. Noise level is loud so be prepared. The starters that we had were fantastic with a few mixed reviews on the main courses. The brussel sprout salad was a fan favorite as was the fried calamari. The Formage Fort, was a little disappointing in that it wasn't an actual fort built of cheese, but it was delicious nonetheless. For main courses, the pork belly from the rotisserie was perfectly cooked. Just the right amount of belly fat and tasted more like a well seasoned, juicy pork chop than any pork belly I've had before. The sides were all a little meh and what leaned this review more toward the 4 stars than 5. The octopus dish was awesome. I have never had octopus so tender. The scallops must have been good because they were not shared with anyone else. Dessert, which further brings this review to a 4 vs 5, could use another go. We shared one dessert so the others could have been better but the shortbread was not very good. If you prefer your desserts vegan and without sweetness, this would be for you. I, on the other hand, prefer desserts that taste like dessert and less like the result of your mother going on a diet and trying to give you a low-cal alternative to what dessert should be. read more

Whenever I travel, I like to discover a great restaurant in which to enjoy a fun dinner. This, being my first trip to the metropolis of Milwaukee (!!) was no exception. So, I hit the "internets" and discovered this place. At about 7 PM, got in the rental and used Waze to guide me the 15 mins it took from the downtown area into Bayview. Looking for the restaurant in this cute, VERY residential hood was easy and so was finding a space. Having lived in Manhattan's West village - I can make this statement with confidence - this place would fit right into Manhattan's West village!! Great beers, wines and an impressively creative menu!! A buzzy atmos and great bartenders (One of whom was a co-owner). Decisions Decisions!!! Had the Lamb Ragu Parpadelle 'little plate' (still pretty generous for an app) - intense flavors, wonderful homemade pasta. Next up - new item on the menu - Scallop Boudin Blanc in a tomato 'sauce' - just wow. One expertly crafted Martini helped add to the entire experience. Finally a creme Brûlée - coz...why not? After standing in the cold, my fiancé and I decided to step into Goodkind for some specialty beer from Central Waters and we were not disappointed. The atmosphere is bohemian meets new school, lovin' the hip hop in the background. Beer was great and the bartenders were very nice. The only thing I wished I would have tried was the food! First time eating here for me, but my date had been there plenty of times before. We were able to get a nice table on the sidewalk to enjoy a beautiful Milwaukee evening. It sounds like the menu changes almost daily, so don't find a favorite! Unfortunately for me, Goodkind is a restaurant for the daring and the brave. My taste buds are not down for that... We tend to stay with what we know is good. Of course the only thing that sounded remotely edible to me was a New York Strip with a whole lot of junk that completely didn't need to be there. Why would you ruin a completely perfect steak with what appeared to be mushed seaweed?!?!? The steak was prepared medium-rare, which is perfect for me, but was precut into bite size portions. Maybe this helped with the presentation? Again, let me do my own cutting please. Smallish cut, I'd say a petite cut, 6oz at best. There was an awful lot of fat in the steak too. Far more than I've seen on New York Strips before. It did have a decent flavor once I scraped the green stuff off along with the other garnishment. My date enjoyed her meal much more than I did. Dessert was an extremely rich chocolate lava cake that was pretty good. She also had a couple of drinks that went down fast, so I'm guessing they were good too. The bill for the two of us was just a shade under $85 before tip, so way more than I was thinking going into the night. I don't think I'll be back. Came here in a party of three on a Saturday evening with a reservation. Instead of a full meal, I opted to try 2 appetizers. I had the cold shaved brussel sprouts salad and the fried mushrooms. YUM! My dining partners had various pastas. Our meal of 2 alcoholic drinks, 2 appetizers, and 2 entrees came out to be a hair under $90, fairly reasonable for the experience. The mushrooms were the highlight of the meal and it came in a huge portion. The decor is very cute and kitschy, imagine dim lighting and flowery wallpaper and some pieces of furniture that look like it might be from the thrift store... The staff here pay attention to the finest of details and make it a delightful and fun experience. The chicken liver pate was awesome - light and rich, with nice crostini and pickled onions to compliment. Goodkind.... I wanted to like you so, so much. But I left more disappointed than I've ever left any restaurant I've dined at in Milwaukee thus far. This is definitely not an overexaggeration by any means. The ONLY positive things that I could say about this place is that they carry New Glarus Strawberry Rhubarb beer and that our server/bartender was friendly. I should've known after our first taste (Fromage Fort) that everything was going to be a slippery slope from there on out. It was overpowered by Gorgonzola (which I love, btw) followed by an intense slap in the face of a bitter unknown aftertaste, whatever the hell that could have possibly been. This was paired with a cold piece of baguette and a sad selection of raw veggies on the side. The Steam Bay Harbor Mussels lacked any kind of flavor that could've possibly been infused. The broth resembled canned chicken broth, the low sodium version. The chickpeas scattered all over in an insulting amount were undercooked and many of the actual mussels were missing from it's shell. We had to request lime and salt to make it the least bit edible. The Spicy Crab pasta was seriously one of the most disrespectful plates I've ever eaten. It wasn't spicy, not even to a toddler I would assume. It was served hot and cold in various parts of the dish. It lacked salt and love in an unforgiving way. The server said it was their best seller... to an audience with a bland palette, that is. I prayed to the food Gods that our final dish, The Hanger Steak, would somehow magically provide some hope for this horrific experience, but to our dismay, it just didn't. The pesto lacked any herb flavor that should've been released upon being blended. The WHOLE thing tasted like extra virgin olive oil. Nothing more, nothing less. The steak was dry and they had the audacity to place it upon what seemed to be their version of panzanella. I cringe just thinking about all of the raw elements on that plate that did not pair well with a steak dish. By this point, we were just ready to get the bill and leave this place as fast as our feet allowed. Goodkind, I've got two words for you. Bland and pathetic. To anyone reading this that has been blessed with a palette and an appreciation of delicious, quality food made with love... do yourself a favor and run the opposite direction. Take your $100 and spend it with dignity elsewhere. At least you'll leave happy and not sick with disgust and shame. read more

Order consisted of: Caesar Salad Linguine Alla Carbonara Rotisserie Half Chicken I've had Goodkind bookmarked for a while now, most likely for the sole reason that it's got good reviews on Yelp, but soon after I started seeing it pop up on some "best of" lists and I have to say I'm not disappointed. The Caesar was -almost- perfect. This is all around one of the best salads I've ever had in my life. It came with a slice of bread rather than the simple croutons, which I loved, the cheese was great, it even came with an actual anchovy (a first for me, will be many more in my future). The "-almost-" comes in with the lettuce, not in flavor or lack of freshness, just in the fact that the pieces are so damn big. Most pieces needed to be folded over 3 or 4 times before I could fit them in my mouth. The linguine, however, was perfect. Perfect cooked noodles and an amazing sauce. Simple and extremely satisfying. The chicken was also great. I'm honestly probably not the best person to review a dish like this because I almost never order chicken at places unless it's in or on something else but my girlfriend decided on the dish and I wasn't mad in any sense. If anything it solidifies my opinion because the chicken was so good, I know the rest of the menu will be even better. A great bonus to this place is that the kitchen is open until 1am DAILY. I always have a lot of appreciation for places open late because sometimes the craving for actually good food comes at midnight and most places are closed by then so a big thank you to the kitchen for that. 4.5/5 after my next visit they'll most likely earn the fifth star read more

I've been to Goodkind twice now and had good food and service both times. They have a solid selection of craft cocktails...I recommend the Wood Dog. The calamari and butternut squash soup were both very good appetizers, especially the soup which contained apple slices and walnuts. For an entree I had the spicy crab pasta. A large portion of pasta with an ok amount of crab. The pepperoni had a little kick but was not overly spicy. No desert. We we way too stuffed. read more

The craft cocktails were fabulous! They are pricey and small, but worth it! Great ingredients and recipes. Not all "small plates" were small! Had the Champagne Battered Oyster Mushrooms and they were SO tasty! As soon as they arrive to your table you get hit w/ the savory aromas of the dish. Highly recommend, plus the plate was really big! Also had the Crisp Monterey Bay Calamari and it was some of the best calamari I've had around here- melts in your mouth versus being chewy- meaning it's fresh! Very yummy flavors. I am going to take a star off my last review. The last time we were there, we sat at the bar and had very bad service. It was a Friday night and were told we couldn't have a table without a reservation (which is understandable but half the tables were empty and didn't fill the whole time we were there) We sat at the end of the bar and the girl working took our drink orders, and we ordered a small plate as an app. After we received our plate, she asked us if we wanted anything else, I asked her to give us a few min. Well a few min turned into 45 min and she never came back or asked us if we wanted another drink again. A couple sat down next to us during this time had two drinks and ate a whole meal and paid, before anyone gave us any attention, and a different girl asked us if we needed anything. By this time we are not wanting to spend anymore time there with the service we received. So we asked for the check when I tried to give my card to the bartender to pay, she snapped at me and stated just wait. Needless to say we are not to excited to go back anytime soon. read more

The Art Deco lamps suspended above the bar and tables make this joint an intimate place to gather with friends and lovers alike. This is an all around nice neighborhood joint. The booths are made from hand hewn planks. This place is really a delight to the senses. I have nothing to say about the food, as it has not yet arrived. You'll just have to see for yourselves. We are not from the area and stopped there not knowing anything about the place. We had our son with us. Bad move. Needless to say this is not a kid friendly place. When we asked if they could take something out of a dish for him we were told "the chef won't compromise his dishes" Wow- ok! Prices were high in my opinion. I won't miss not being able go back.
