Great work on the repairs, but expensive and I found the owner confusing to work with. First time I went I brought in: 1 pair of ballet flats, one pair of stilettos, one pair of boots. I wanted a half sole on all of the shoes plus the heels replaced on all (so two larger heels and then a pair of heel tips for the stilettos). The heel tips were priced the same as the large boot heels which is not the case at any other repair place. For these three shoes, it was $180 total which is steep ($60 per pair for heels and half sole, one of the heels just being heel tips) and doesn't correspond to the pricing board inside. The quality of repair was great though, but it was very expensive. Second time I went, I had a pair of ankle boots, but one of the heels had visibly fallen off. I talked to the repair man for a long time insisting that he just repair the one shoe as opposed to both shoes since one shoe was in perfect condition and didn't need a repair. For two shoes it would've been $25, but he charged me $15 for the one shoe. I mistakenly left the perfect shoe and took home the broken shoe (completely my fault!). He went ahead anyways and added a second heel to the perfect shoe and didn't contact me about it which was strange considering he had my phone number and we talked extensively about him repairing the visibly damaged shoe so he knew what I had paid him to fix. When I went back and asked if I could just pay the $25 difference of $10 for him to repair the broken shoe, he said no it would still be $15 and wouldn't budge at all, even when I offered to give him cash. I just took home the weird pair of shoes without getting them fixed by him and will figure out what to do with it later. read more

I found Wayne on Yelp after doing a quick search of cobblers in the area near my work.I dropped off my shoes here last week. I had a pair of high heeled leather boots. The bottom rubber part on the heel had fallen off. I was also walking on the heel without the rubber tip for a a week so there was some grind down of the plastic. He replaced both my heel bottoms and added a little extra something something on the heel that was grinded down. They look perfect!! It cost me twenty dollars for the fix and I paid when I dropped off the shoes. It took about a week turnaround. I am definitely coming back here for all my shoes. read more

I have a bad habit of... i'm not sure what, but almost every pair of high heels I own has the back of the wrapped leather heel scraped down after a night out. I've taken a pair to another cobbler and they did a shoddy job of gluing it back on. I took another pair here to Wayne and when he returned it to me, you couldn't tell that it had ever been damaged. Stay away!! I took my platform booties here awhile back because the heel was coming apart from the shoe. Was told he could glue it but nailing it would reinforce it better, but would cost a bit more. I went with the nail option, picked up my shoes only to find he glued it instead of nailing it like he said. And he did a really sloppy job, as there was glue all over the bottom, clearly visible. When confronted he said the shoe was cheaply made so he couldn't nail it. Ok...but he still charged me for the nail price. Whatever, it wasn't that much to begin with but not even a day passes and the heel comes apart. I bring back the shoe and he just says to come back tomorrow. I come back only to find he had glued blue pieces of paper to my shoe. Again, I confront him and now he takes the shoe and simply paints over it will black ink!!! He can't remove the paper without damaging the shoe, but having crinkly painted paper stuck to my shoe is ok???? He doesn't even give me a refund!!! HORRIBLE work, crappy attitude, and really should not be in business. STAY AWAY!!! read more

Backstory: I have a pair of steve madden brown leather boots that I wear ALL.THE.TIME. ALLLLTHETIME. They are literally by far my favorite pair of boots, and after a couple years of wearing them incessantly, you could definitely tell that they were due for retirement. My poor babies were so worn down - the front toe parts of my shoes were so beaten and worn, the sole was nonexistent, they had tears in the leather from clumsy mishappenings in the city, and they had so many weathered stains. I was in denial that it was THAT time. I've attempted, but never found a pair of boots that I loved as much as these. I was sad to see them go... it was going to be one of the hardest breakups I would have ever had. WAS being the key word. That is, until I wandered into Wayne's shop one day. It's located in that little alley which is part FiDi, part ChinaTown. After talking to him for a few minutes, he convinced me that he could make my poor babies good as new. I was reluctant, yes I'll admit I was skeptical. But I decided to give it a shot, and damn I'm glad I did! They look as young, fine, refreshed as the first day I took them out of the box, if not better! He replaced the sole, fixed the tears (I have no idea how he was able to managed this amazing feet... no pun intended!), did some hocus pocus on the leather that made it look like it had never been worn....basically made them new brand spankin new. All for $60! I'll admit I was hesitant to pay the price at first, but when you find a pair of boots that you love as much as I did, $60 is worth it to bring them back to life. I'm forever indebted to the miracle that he did for me that day. And I won't for a second hesitate to bring any other shoe/handbag for him to fix, he does great work! read more

One of the most irritating noises is the sound of a heel nail hitting the concrete pavement. Fortunately, at Good Steps that can take care of that and really care for your shoe. Wayne is awesome and his work is marvelous. I had a pair of Diesel shoes which is in pretty bad shape but it's so comfortable and I dont want to just throw it away. I took it to Wayne and see what he can do about it. I thought he would tell me to trash them but instead he said give him a few days and see what he can do. I came back and I was shocked. He replaced the entire outsole and polished them which ended like a new pair. The cost is very reasonable and most importantly it like I just bought a new pair. Woohoo.... I brought in my leather travel bag to have the zippers fixed after TSA mangled them last year while inspecting my bag, which I'd checked before flying. Wayne (owner?) said it would take a week to fix. He said that because of the way the zippers had come off the track, he'd have to cinch them up in the middle, to save me a lot of money versus replacing the whole zipper track. He said he was very busy and it would take up to a week to finish and that he'd call when he was done. Well, today made exactly a month now, so I went in to the shop just now and checked on the bag, and it was in fact done and satisfactorily to me. I was happy, even though he didn't call when it was ready as he said he would (could've used it on a trip). The zipper job cost $20 even instead of an estimated $50 to replace the entire track. Wayne is a nice guy, speaks enough English to do the job, and his prices are fair. Go see him! read more

Overall I think this place is good, he did a good job on my flats and my husbands black shoes, although he mentioned the heel was very hard and he could feel it in his walking, so it seems the material is different than the original the show had. The boots I took in, while he did the heel he did not polish the boot because he didn't have the color, graphite, OK so how about just some clear polish? And there was an area that was coming apart near the heel that I expected he would fix or glue. The service is not very friendly. read more

So, I've just moved to a new place and am having a bitch of a time getting copies to the front door made. Everywhere I go, from Home Depot to neighborhood hardware stores, people shake their heads at me. Someone informs me that my key is a left-handed one, and hence very old, and that I'd be better off going to a locksmith. (Apparently all locks today have right-handed keys). I do not doubt this piece of information as my landlord, like the building I've moved into, is very old. One evening, I find myself arriving early to meet friends at EZ-5 for drinks. This shoe repair shop, just a few doors down, advertises key copying, so I think, what the hell. The man behind the counter scrutinizes my key and the ones on a little rack next to his key machine, but none of them match. He pulls out a thick book with pages upon pages of key shapes and consults it. He pulls out little boxes. He consults the key guide book again. He pulls out more little boxes and roots around in them. Another customer walks in, but Mr. ShoeRepairMan is on a mission and does not cease his search to find siblings to my key. I start to feel bad, like I just sent him on some kind of Sisyphean journey and say, "Oh, it's OK." But he does not give up. Finally, he finds something in a little box, makes 2 copies of my key and says I can come back for a refund if they don't work. When I get home, lo and behold, they work! Like the other reviewer, I cannot comment on the shoe repair, but the key copying here is excellent. read more

I'm so happy I came across this place. I work nearby and one of my coworkers said good things. My beloved Chanel flats got worn out by all the walking you do living in sf. the shoes were pretty delicate in the first place but still sad to see them so tattered. I took them to get fixed at another place and soles flapped off again within a few weeks, I thought id never wear them again but kept them safe in my closet JIC. 2 years later I take them into good steps and 5 days after that they look as beautiful as the day I bought them! And tougher for sure! The sole was completely redone and re enforced and the patent leather tip was shiny and perfect. Very happy with the service here. I had to switch after a terrible experience at Galletti and luckily this place is just around the corner from my work. he opens at 10am, but I've come in around 9:45 and he's been open already. He doesn't speak great English, but plenty to get whatever you need done. His work is great and it's always done quickly, often within just a few hours. His prices are a bit inconsistent (but always low) so sometimes it's $5, sometimes $7, but when other places charge a min of $8 for those type of repairs, I don't mind paying anywhere within the range. read more

Right by my office so I've brought a couple pairs of dress shoes in for sole repair. Apparently I am hard on leather soles, so I tend to get pretty big holes over time. Wayne has done a great hob of fixing the holes and putting on new rubber soles and heals at a fair price. You also get a free shine with every repair! Would definitely recommend. read more

Wayne is wonderful! My relatively-new pair of leather flats have been killing the back of my heels, and I took them here to get stretched. Fortunately, Wayne asked me to try them on and discuss the problem, and as soon as he saw them on my feet, he said stretching wasn't what I needed! In about 5 minutes flat he had inserted pads to raise my foot, and hammered the leather back to be soft and pliable. I was able to walk 6 blocks in them immediately, when I couldn't even take a step in them this morning! read more

Even if the actual fix may take more work than he quoted at the beginning, (you prepaid the repair fee) he wouldn't charge you extra when it's done, but wanted to build a longer term relationship. Ok, Wayne is a busy man! He is always working away on shoes. He's got to be popular because there are always a ton of shoes back there. I have always had a great experience with his shoe repairs. He does a great job, he's cheap and pretty fast. The only warning I have is his ability to cut keys. I had him cut a duplicate set of apartment keys for me and a co-worker but unfortunately there were a couple of keys on each set that did not work. I brought them back and Wayne fixed the problem. My favorite pair of heels were destroyed - guess Italian leather soles don't really stand a chance against the concrete clad hills of sf. I usually stick some dollar store soles on the bottom of my shoes and call it a day, but as these were my babies, I was willing to take this pair to the professionals. And what professionals they are at good steps! As the guy at the counter inspected the soles, he saw some of the raffia weave was coming undone at the edges of my shoe. He promised to take care of that, as otherwise the whole thing could unravel, leaving a destroyed shoe and the remnants of my broken heart. When I got my shoes back, now only were the edges patched up but the soles looked good as new. He matched tan soles to go with my shoe, so the look was still natural. For those who have a much better shoe game than I do, he also has red soles to match those pretty loubies. Minus 1 star because he didn't have shoe ready at time he promised. Not huge deal because I just came back next day, and the work more than balances out any delays. Just FYI if y'all are sticklers for that. read more

World class service! I was attending a conference close by and decided to have a pair of boots fixed/ polished. He told me it would be done next day (Friday) but unfortunately, I wasn't able to make it and tried to go back on Saturday. He was closed Saturday / Sunday and I was flying back Sunday night. Fast forward to being back in Montreal - I called him up and he mailed me my boots! They were in amazing condition - perfectly fixed and looked better then new. Great location to my office but horrible service! He's just overwhelmed! Twice my shoes were not ready and then when I picked up one pair they weren't complete! When I took the incomplete pair back he wanted more $ claiming I had only paid for heels, cushion insert, and shining! I shine my own shoes and any good shoe repair shop would do the "once over" shine for free! Unless you don't mind walking up to Chinatown 4 times for the same two pair of shoes, avoid this place! i really could not be happier. i got 1 pair of knee high leather doc martin's outfitted with a new zipper for each boot. it cost $75. most other places want to charge something like $50 for one. the only down side was it took 3 weeks. but he did a fine job, he was very nice and the price was reasonable. i will totally go there again. read more
