The meals were multiple choices to suit tastes, diets, abilities, etc. The activities are plentiful and fun, as well as visiting entertainment. However, there seemed to be issues at night -- responses to the call bell may be as long as a 20 minute wait. One day, she was served a very spicy egg dish for breakfast. She quickly notified the kitchen that she could not eat that because it was too spicy and could she have something else which they agreed to do. At 11:30 she still did not have any substitute breakfast. So she was very disappointed. A substitute meal was never sent and no one ever came to apologize or say what happened.

They're just trying to keep their clients safe and healthy. So no one should be complaining about that. My interest was care. And I'm happy to report that they took care of my relative to the point that he is well enough to come home after 2 months recovery from an infection that he caught at a different nursing home on Oahu. I'm the type of person that name's names. Brooke is an outstanding nurse on the 5th floor. She always called with update or concerns and kept us informed, as we live on a neighbor island and were lucky if we could get to Honolulu every 2-3 weeks. Brandy is a Social Worker who has done all of the leg work in getting our relative the care he needed. She was our liaison between the medical insurance company, the facility and and us. She was able to address all our questions/concerns without hesitation. And we called a lot. Kalakaua Gardens is in a great location. If you need to stay on Oahu while visiting someone the gardens, The Pagoda Hotel is a good local hotel to stay it. It's a 10 min. walk away.

She used to call me at home, to call the front desk, so that they would go and help her to the bathroom. She would press the call button but nobody would come, therefore, she would have accidents in bed. Keep in mind that my mom was 91 and did NOT have to use diapers, but they put her in diapers. I can only imagine how degrading it was for her during her stay. Another cause of concern was only 30 minute visitations were allowed because of Covid. I totally understand this, but your time starts ticking as soon as you sign in. Their elevators are so slow so our visit was only 5 minutes due to the wait for the elevators. We couldn't even visit with her! So sad and depressing. Needless to say, I took her out of this place so that she could live her final weeks at home. I sure hope visits and care are better now for the patients and families.

He warned me of the bumps on the road and any sudden stops-for my safety and comfort. I checked in and was not very impressed by the surroundings ( its not the Hilton or Ritz). The place had a 1970's-80's outer island motel feel- sort of like a low budget vintage vibe. Rehab wing is on the 3rd floor. 2 star The headboard of the bed was termite eaten, hallway littered with plastic rubbish bins and plastic storage drawers. Just very low budget but functional sort of ghetto feel. The scale they put me on could hold a wheel chair and we got weighed together/ handle of scale was broken and hanging awkwardly. Little things like that need fixing or replacing but is never repaired is questionable. 2 star Every bed had a 14 inch personal tv monitor that was connected to the wall hung on a heavy duty hinged armature- that's great. First night I was there the service was out due to high winds. TIP: Download movies onto your IPAD from NETFLIX or AMAZON Prime. Lucky I was prepared but my poor roommate was bored silly. Internet went down 3 out of the 7 days I was there. 2 star The rooms are not private and shared with 1 other person-fortunately my roommate was considerate and we got along well 5 stars. First day I was having a consultation with PT, a lady suddenly took a big dump in my doorway. WTH, therapist quickly closed the curtain. The whole room smelled of feces and the aid wiped it up. That lady took a shower after finishing her dump and went back next door. My roommate said many different people are using our bathroom but she is not sure why? Aid Michelle said the lady nest door is too big to fit her shower and comes over to use ours. OK 1, 2, or 3x but everyday? I do not know her and its unsanitary. They have a big shower down the hall and why is she showering in my room?2nd day same lady is using my toilet again "ugh, ummm, haw, hoo..." all these grunting noises while she is dropping missiles. Told myself to GTFO and ran away into the "dayroom". Waited for her to finish showering and vacate before I could use my room again. Roommate not so fortunate-bedridden and nowhere to go. 0 stars Near the end of my stay here ,there was a theft that happened to one of the residence. That made me question the safety and privacy of this complex. Was supposed to stay longer but didnt feel 100% safe. Was it a nurses aid or a visitor scoping out everything? Hmmmm...Any security cameras to do an investigation? 1 star My nurse was "JAY" friendly, intelligent, kind, and had a sense of humor. 5 stars Nurses aid "Army", "Romano" and "Ikaika" very compassionate and caring aids. 5 stars Dietician "Lauren" made my stay so much better by tweaking the meal plan options and snacks to meet my needs. 5 stars food 3.5 star Doctor Kramer -kind caring saw him twice during my 7 day stay- 5 stars. The physical /occupational therapist: Kevin, Katie, Kim and John are all 5 stars. Kevin asked me how is everything so far? I said the accommodation is low quality but the people are high quality and I rather have it that way than the other way around. Joined the daily activities schedule everyday to keep from going bonkers: 5am Brush teeth/TV news 7am breakfast 9am OT 11am music circle 12pm lunch 130pm Bingo 230 pm crafting or karaoke 330 PT 5pm dinner 630pm Bingo or Keno 7pm snack shower/brush teeth 8pm off to "beddy by" My ideal daily routine -woke early and slept early PT and OT 3 hours a day for 7 days a week. Yes I can say working hard really did pay off100%. Still could speak and had an opinion without being a Karen- ask nicely say PLEASE and THANK YOU will get you far here. Can see if English is your second language or perhaps you dont even have a voice a person may not have there wishes met or receive less than the best care here. Honorable mention: Coral/Jasmine the activities coordinator made my stay really fun. Working dogs paid us a visit and we had a live performance/ concert in the cafeteria-5 stars Music circle scared me straight. Most of the people who participated were catatonic with their fists in a ball. When I saw that you can be darn sure I worked my hand to do stretches -scared me into working all the OT exercises! Thank You Kevin over at Kaiser Moanalua PT team to referring my case to Hale Nani. Did not know this world existed and that opened my eyes. The 3rd Floor staff was really nice and super kind to my mother. She enjoyed being around them. My biggest gripe is their office staff. Really super bad communication. I would call and leave messages on their voice mail and they would never return my calls. One day I was so frustrated that when I did finally get to speak to someone in a particular department I had asked why do they not return phone calls when messages are left. I was basically blown off and told I don't know. I was pretty stunned about their shear lack of accountability. They would often tell me that they called but I never answered. I would check my phone and I had zero missed calls from them because they never called. Personally, I can't stand them. It was frustrating. My mother was finally discharged yesterday morning. How I found out was through an email Thursday afternoon at 4:45pm that said "We were not able to get in touch with you but wanted to let you know that your mother will be discharged tomorrow." I was so happy to get her out of there so I would not have to deal with that horrible office staff and grouchy people that open the door. I would give them a big fat 0 stars because of their horrible office staff. My mom said 4 but their food is really a 1. So we went with 3 stars.

I had issues with finding a stall only once, and when I called the front desk, she actually came outside to help me! What caring service!!! Grandma is staying here until we can make arrangements to return home. There are 2-3 patients per room, but noticed private rooms as well for an added cost. Private and skilled nursing care is not cheap!!! The workers here are friendly and I see good things happening at the facility- people always offering to help and they have patients up in the chair and present at the activities, even though they might not be able to actively participate. There are lots of open areas for residents to get fresh air and/or eat with their visitors. If you want, they will reserve a table for you on the covered patio too!

My husband had been in two nursing facilities on the mainland after an accident and surgery, so we can attest to the superior quality of Hale Ho Aloha. We couldn't be happier with our choice.

St. Francis Hospice was suggested for my mom by the Palliative Care Department at Kaiser. After…read moremeeting with the case worker, we decided on their services for in home hospice care. The case worker, nurses and those who bathed my mom were excellent. They never rushed her, were always so kind and gentle and she enjoyed their visits and chats. Her nurse (Yun Jin) never made our concerns seem unimportant and always made sure checked our concerns on moms health and condition. They really were calming for me as I felt the nurse was just a call away and would be available if my mom suddenly took a turn for the worse. When I needed surgery, we placed my mom in a private care home and the hospice services followed her. She had a different team, because it was in a different area, but the same great level of care was provided. Because my mom was stable she "Graduated" from hospice and was released to her own doctors. Unfortunately, two months later she passed away. Some things that I had to get used to were: 1) The doctor never visited but was kept well informed via the nurse 2) All blood work, doctor's visits, treatments ended. Eye exams, hearing aid adjustments, ear exams were permitted but very little else as this was comfort care. Any problems were addressed by the nurse. My mom's doctor continued to follow my mom's progress via twice monthly calls with us. It was difficult for our minds to go from a mentality of healing my mom to one of offering her comfort but we did eventually get used to it. After my mom "graduated" from Hospice I realized just how much they had helped my mom and I and what peace and calm they brought to our minds. Impending death of a loved one is difficult and dealing with that day to day realization can be frightening. They helped alleviate that making us feel like we weren't alone on this journey with my mom but we had a great support team standing behind us. Thank you St. Francis Hospice for being such a great team with our family to care for my mom. I would recommend them to anyone needing this kind of care. They are excellent!

My father was recently hospitalized and then needed to go to short term rehab to get stronger prior…read moreto coming home. He ended up at short-term rehab at Hale Ola Kino. The location was convenient. He was here approximately two weeks. The main reason to going to short-term rehab is if they need more physical therapy and occupational therapy to get stronger to be independent. Sometimes they no longer need to be in the hospital, but may be a fall risk so going to short-term rehab is a good idea. Overall, I think he had a good experience. He did receive PT and OT on most days. I believe it's six days a week. First they started him with a walker, then a cane, and then did trial him on no assist device. I also asked them to make sure he could navigate stairs. He told me the food was pretty good. Staff was attentive. Physical therapist and occupational therapist were personable and provided good therapy. Would definitely recommend this place for short-term rehab.

Follow up review as dad is still in rehab - Nuuanu Hale initiated a Care Plan meeting for dad, me,…read moremy brother and the managers of various areas who are assisting with Dad's rehabilitation- nurses, physical therapist/occupational therapist, diet, activities, and social services. My brother and I were pleasantly surprised to have each manager share their updates of dad and what their goals are to meet his proposed discharge date. Mahalo to Christina, the nurse manager who confirmed the medications he is receiving and asking us the right questions to ensure we're on the same page. She answered all our questions and reassured us that he is doing well and being pleasant to the nursing staff. Yay! Next up was Amrik the PT and OT manager who shared Dad is 94 but listening to the therapists and trying to do what they ask- he has walked 20 feet with a walker and they are giving cues for him to take bigger steps also helping him with proper way to get up out of a chair, sit down, sit on the potty, get up from potty, and encouraging him to keep trying, which he has been doing, much to our surprise and joy. Then there's dear Maka, manager of activities, she works hard to get to know each patient, what their interests are, hobbies, routine and wants to help them stay as close possible to what they enjoy doing at home. She visits Dad every day and when she heard he liked watching westerns and war movies, she got him his own TV since the double rooms share one TV only. She promised us in this meeting she would do it that day and it was there when my brother visited dad yesterday! At Christmas they received a big donation and she delivered all the gifts to each patient! A big mahalo to Jason, the dietary manager who brought us up to date on dad's eating habits which we had worried about and happy to see he was enjoying the food, his weight and although dad doesn't require a a structured diet, Jason still wants to make sure dad is okay with the food. He said there is an ice machine we can use for his Coca Cola and also a soda machine available in break room if he asks the nurse for one when we're not there. (Jennifer, another nurse, had taken the time to call me to say dad was craving one and didn't have change for the machine, so I was able to bring one for him). Jason explained the dietician will do an assessment of dad but we are happy he is eating the food and getting plenty of liquids. He looks great and his color is so good. Social Worker, Nu Timotea, was facilitating this meeting and did an awesome job explaining the next steps for his proposed discharge date. Helpful suggestions and recommendations gave us the baseline we needed to start the phone calls to begin the selection process of where is the safest and most comfortable for dad. I thanked all of them for making it a pleasant experience for dad and how impressed and touched we are with the care he receives as well as what we observe with the other patients. We are there every day at different times so we've met and seen various staff- everyone is cheerful, helpful, patient, gracious and kind. Even when they're super busy it seems they stop to reassure a patient or communicate what will happen next. It brings tears to my eyes what wonderful people they are to help others in need.
