The back story is that I had been looking for help with repairing my chimney (new cap and cover) and found a couple of service providers in San Francisco where I live. It appeared that they were highly rated and so I had them come out and give me a quote. They did but the quotes were under names that were different from the name on the websites which raised concerns (do your homework and check out the business address on the website and check for license number before having them come out). I asked for contractor license numbers and they either didn't have or it was under a different name which raised more concerns. I began to look elsewhere and found someone who was a licensed contractor but they refused to come over and look at it before giving me a quote and were not going to be able to do the work for another couple of weeks. Finally I found Mister Chimney (licensed and bonded in California #1160652) and was able to schedule an inspection right away. Martin (the owner) came over and inspected it himself. I showed him where the other chimney service providers had accessed the roof but he insisted on another access point so as to avoid damaging the rain gutters despite the fact that it was a much higher and more difficult access point (the other chimney service providers didn't even consider and sure enough had done some damage to the rain gutters). Martin was able to inspect and give me a quote on the spot and scheduled the work to be done that week. The guys who came over and did the work did a great job and the cost matched the quote which was very fair and below the cost the other chimney service providers quoted. I only wish I would have found Mister Chimney sooner.

I'm very happy with the customer service and product from Kidd. I ordered both a gas insert…read more(Jotul) and a gas log set from Kidd in late February 2021. Randy was clear that there is a supply chain delay in receiving both inserts and log sets, and that the delay is particularly long and unpredictable for the gas log sets. Our insert arrived within the time frame that Randy had stated (early May 2021), and was installed by the technicians to whom Kidd had referred us. We were unhappy with the size and fit of the surround plate for the insert, and Randy took it to a metal shop to adjust it for us. The first attempt resulted in a broken plate, so Randy had another plate made for us there. He painted it the custom color that we had specified and returned to install it himself. It looks great and we are very happy with how Randy would not stop until we were satisfied. We still don't have the log set, but Randy has managed our expectations by communicating clearly and consistently with us about this timing.

We had Randy come out to service our SPARK 88NE that was installed new by a contractor in 2015 and…read morehad never been thoroughly cleaned. We also felt the flame was too low and more blue than yellow. We bought this place in 2017 so we felt it was time we had someone check it out. Randy was on time and he spent a total of about three hours taking the fireplace apart, cleaning it, making a few adjustments and putting it back together. Total cost was just under $1,000!!! We just gulped and paid, figuring we'd gone 7 years without really touching the thing. Unfortunately, after Randy left we noticed an odd flame rising above the area where the pilot light sits. We contacted Randy and he said he'd have to call SPARK to get their feedback on the odd flame. I waited a few days and hearing nothing from Randy, I contacted SPARK myself and sent them a picture of the odd flame. SPARK replied saying everything was fine, but that Randy had improperly adjusted something and just needed to readjust it. I sent SPARK's reply to Randy and he responded saying he'd be out "on Friday" to make things right. Friday came and no Randy. I contacted him and he said there must have been a misunderstanding - there wasn't, as I had his email. He said he had another customer nearby and he was waiting on a part for that customer, so he'd contact me as soon as he had the part and was coming this way again. That was early Nivember. I heard nothing for weeks so I reached out a week ago to find out when Randy could return. I was then contacted by his partner/assistant, who informed me Randy was unfortunately in a bad accident and would probably be out of commission for several weeks. Obviously it is beyond Randy's control that he's injured and needs time to recover, but we're still shocked that after paying nearly $1,000 for three hours of service (no parts) back on October 31, 2024, there has been no real effort on the part of Kidd Fireplace to make things right for us. We've had to do all the contacting, research with the manufacturer, etc. We've been very patient as well. Sadly there seem to be very few NFI Certified technicians here in Northern California so Randy Kidd is literally the only game, an unreliable game at that, in town.

The installation was smooth, and aside from a burnt out lightbulb above the flame area, it has worked wonders to heat the house for 4 winters! Fewer stars for the wait-time and attitude when the fireplace stops working. I'm writing this to update my earlier, frustrated review based on having to wait for 8 weeks to get our beautiful Mendota fireplace fixed. In short, the gorgeous fireplace worked great at heating the house for the first 4 years! When it stopped turning on this past October, I was stunned to learn that we would have to wait almost 8 weeks until Dec. 18 for an appointment with OKells to repair it. This made for a cold Thanksgiving since we use the fireplace as the main heat and don't have a furnace. It would have been really helpful if the folks at OKells could either have 1. helped us out to get if fixed sooner, given that it's the only heat source... or if it was impossible to squeeze us in sooner, 2. It would have been awesome if they had recommended one of the independent repair companies immediately, so I knew this was an option. I finally got a referral after desperately calling around for help, from Blaze Fireplace of all places, who went out of their way to give me the names and numbers of several independent companies that fix these things! So, now it's working again after having a valve replaced. (Some of my frustration comes from the fact that I personally always try to go above and beyond for people in need. I'm a teacher, and I always try to go the extra mile for my students and colleagues. I really believe in taking care of members of my community, and I wish this business had the same work ethic and a little bit of kindness, in trying to help out someone who really needs their heater to work, instead of giving me a lecture on why they can't do it any sooner.)
