To cut to the chase, the first star is for simply doing the job after about 6 different fabricators simply disappeared after giving their estimates, and the second is for the final product being pretty much what I was looking for. The problem was the entire management of the project, the lack of response, sloppiness in the fabrication/paint job, and lack of follow through on items. The estimator came over to look at the job, and gave me an estimate per our discussion. However, after the estimate, I paid the deposit and was ready to go. I was told about a 2-3 week period until fabrication and installation would take place. I was contacted to arrange for the fabricator to come over and do final measurements. I arranged to be home at 3pm per appointment and was at home waiting from 2pm - 5pm. No one showed up. No one called to cancel, no one answered the phone nor email regarding the appointment. I then got a call saying the fabrication would happen on Wednesday with installation on Thursday. So I said I'd like to make sure and confirm that what was discussed is actually being fabricated, so I'd like to see drawings. They responded saying they don't do drawings and to trust them that they would fabricate code compliant hand rails. This was not working for me, as we spoke about specifics on how custom a job this was--leveling out at the landings, how to wrap around the walls, etc. I wanted to ensure that what was being made was what we discussed --to save everyone time and effort. I was told that if I required drawings, they would have to push back the fabrication in order to draw the rail over the weekend. I told them I don't mind if it's a simple drawing on a napkin, it literally can take 2-3 minutes to draw how the connection points were going to be done. So I agreed to wait over the weekend so someone could draw a 2 minute drawing. On Monday afternoon when no one contacted me, I reached out again to see where the drawing was, and the response was, fabrication will begin on Wednesday. So I said again, I don't understand why having a drawing on a custom fabrication is such an unreasonable request, but I want to make sure you guys are making what we've agreed upon. So finally, I said fine, come Wednesday, but know if it's not what we've discussed, it will be removed and redone. Wednesday changes to Thursday because paint now needs to dry. Not sure why this is a surprise, but again, I've had to juggle my schedule to accommodate. Thursday the installation begins, and I'm very excited to see that it looks like the drawing I've gone ahead and provided them. As installation happens, I see that the bracket that they begin installing is completely wrong. It was not as my drawing showed, nor what was discussed. I'm glad I caught them when only about 4 had been installed, because otherwise it would have taken even longer to repair. So they made new brackets on site. One thing that was difficult, was no one spoke English so when it came to talking about some complex items, communication was difficult. The 6-8 hour installation took about 10 hours, and they still were not finished with painting. After everyone was out of the house, I was able to look at the work and was shocked when one of the vertical posts on the railing was completely a full degree off of vertical. Which aligning next to a wall made an unsightly view of something that was completely off vertical. I took my phone and measured every post, and they all registered 0, but that one measured -1 degree. So I wrote to say that someone needed to come back to fix the post. The next morning I got a call saying they were sending the painter out, so I told them again that the post needed fixing. So the whole team came out and had to uninstall the rail, cut it from the original installed location, and bring it back out to fabricate. You'd think making sure a vertical post was vertical is default, but it wasn't. After a few hours, they were able to get it a little better--still not perfect, but definitely improved, and then had to begin painting all the rails again. The paintjob was less than stellar, and I now have to go back and touch up the walls where paint dripped, trim work that was repainted the wrong color, and caulk places that were opened up by the installation. Overall, I'm pretty happy with the final installation, but the process was not an easy one, and the lack of response and follow through was more than infuriating. read more
