Why does this bike feel so lopsided?? Oh....
    Lily S.

This is exactly what you should expect for $9/mo. And if you're paying more, you're getting ripped off. First of all, I am convinced that this is where my car is going to get wrecked. There's no easy way to get into this parking lot if you're on the wrong side of the highway. You can either take your chances with trying to u-turn through 3 lanes of traffic, or you can go around to turn left at a light, but that involves another left turn through 2 lanes of oncoming traffic. #funsies. Then just pray that some moron isn't speeding through the crammed parking lot on a mission to i-dunno-where. [This was just my first experience here. I'm sure plenty more where that came from]. The gym itself is filthy, which is odd because I see numerous staff cleaning when I'm there...Literally, my first visit, there was a massive clump of hair on the floor in the locker room. How do you miss that?? Cardio equipment is plentiful but I wish they had more functioning bikes, since basically every single one I have come across has some sort of problem (see attached image). Also please fix your 2nd erg. I will say that they have a cool scanner system at the studio doors for classes so you can scan your membership card to log attendance. [in case you're wondering how they keep track of #basic members vs. those who pay extra for classes]. The movie room is an interesting touch. Overall, you get what you pay for. I joined because of the black friday deal and my regular gym going out of business, but I can see already that the hassle of the commute alone makes me not very excited about coming here.

False advertising. This location allows male "freelance fitness trainers" in the Lady's Golds Area. Then when you try to get a phone number or email to contact corporate (which you're told you can't have) mr. trainer is behind the counter insisting on arguing with you and stating he is going to continue to do his "job" in the women's gym and continues to argue after you tell him you don't want to talk to him anymore literally 3 times. Then accuses you of yelling at him. Awww. Here's an idea: either take it off the website and throw away your tacky Lady Gold's gym whiteboard or keep men out.

Gold's has been my gym for over a year now. I live by Patterson Park so it's a bit out of the way compared to Merritt and MAC but Gold's is $10 or so a month to the closer guys' rates which push $100 I believe. For the price you get a pretty awesome gym. They have every machine and piece of equipment I could want and many I never would. Staff and members are friendly...just be careful taking advice from roided out meat heads. I actually heard a dude blaming his bad knees on doing squats through their full range of motion as he was explaining lifting philosophy. Don't drink the punch! Where this Gold's really falls short is cleanliness and maintenance. It's leg day and there are no clips to be found. Kind of irritating! There just aren't enough clips to go with all the stations. That's inexcusable, especially for a gym that bills itself as a bodybuilders' gym. The only other huge complaint I have is that no one reracks weights. Ever! I don't understand why management doesn't either enforce their "rack your weights" policy or hire someone to keep the place neat. It seems so simple but it would make the experience so much better. Aside from these things which are really just annoyances, the gym is pretty great. If you don't mind driving 15 minutes, it's worth it. The price is right. The quality is there. It's just not as polished as the gym that cost 7 times more. But you get what you pay for, right? O ya...the Wi-Fi is mostly useless and lots of the paper towel dispensers don't work. And members have their gym bags all over the floor despite the signs and rules prohibiting it. Again, overall it's a great gym but these are little annoyances that could turn Gold's into an even better gym of enforced and fixed.

Going down hill since management change. Now the rules are poorly enforced, lots of broken equipment and a filthy parking lot.

Some instructors are better with explaining how to do the movements correctly. I really have enjoyed my classes with Taylor and Avery (best music as well). I've taken classes with 5 other instructors as well. Another trend I've noticed is the lack of inclusivity. I've been to other workout studios and there's usually a culture of kindness, here I'll smile at the women and they will literally look at me like or just looking up/down at you... it seems oddly competitive? My other experience as well is one of the instructors kept calling me by the name of the only other Asian girl in the studio, I didn't notice it until midway through class. Lastly I think the cost for 8 classes a month for $200 is a bit steep when looking at Solidcore/Core power yoga unlimited classes are $180 per month. Something to note! I definitely would've kept going if the cost made sense and I could frequent classes with solid instructors.

TL;DR: Don't buy a gift certificate/card from this place…read more Zen and the City really appears to be set up for members and isn't equipped to interact with outsider customers. Unsurprisingly, most of the negative reviews are from people trying to deal with their gift certificates or gift cards since they are not able to provide reasonable service to people unfamiliar with their procedures. Throughout the process, I had to chase the owner, Gary, repeatedly over text and phone in order to get any information. A list of things I wish I knew before attempting to use a gift certificate here: I was alone in the building, not just the room, with an unknown man. Zen and the City is a therapist-owned establishment that has appointment-only booking for services. In light of this description, I probably should have known that I would be alone with my massage therapist. Except the website contains none of that information, which I only learned about after the appointment, so I was blindsided. My massage therapist was a very nice man who did his best to make me feel welcome and taken care of (Thank you, Anthony. You were the only good part of this whole experience!), but it was hard to set aside how uncomfortable it was to be alone with a strange man without knowing before that no one else would be there. The gift certificates (physical) and gift cards (e-cards) are redeemed in different ways. The website doesn't make it clear (either in the description or during the purchase) that physical gift certificates are only redeemable for a specific service, and that the gift certificates and gift cards are considered two different products. When I got the certificate for Zen and the City, neither my father (who bought this as a gift) nor I knew there was a difference between the two until after I had my appointment and was told otherwise. If you redeem the service-specific gift certificate for the wrong service by mistake, Zen and the City will not inform you of the mistake when you book your appointment and will instead pocket the remaining money without further services or refund, even after their error is pointed out to them. I suspect they would have prevented me from redeeming the gift certificate for something that was MORE money than the one I used, but when I accidentally used it from something that cost LESS, I was only told afterwards when I couldn't fix my mistake, or receive a refund for the balance. The initial confirmation text message is meaningless. It doesn't accurately reflect that an appointment's successfully been made (because you get a text regardless), and it does not result in you being correctly signed up to receive text messages. Instead, they will contact you by email, no matter your indicated preference (which they don't know anyway because they never ask for your preference). If there is a problem with your email address, they will not use your phone number to follow up. There will be no further attempt to contact you. I'll be honest and admit that I made quite a few mistakes in attempting to deal with Zen and the City, and I accept the responsibility of those mistakes. However, I think it's important for future potential customers to know beforehand that this is the kind of business that is happy to take advantage of your confusion, your mistakes, or your unexpected illness (check out their sick policy). It's up to you whether you want to risk giving this place your money and time.

I'm talking throw me into the mouth of a fire breathing dragon, allow me to suffer a bit, sometimes tease me with a breath of fresh air, allow me to continue melting, and throw some positivity in to keep me from completely sputtering out. Thankfully, Breathing Dragon lives up to its name. This delightful hot yoga studio, which was converted from a core power yoga studio, has everything I need to be happily at home. Breathing Dragon IS absolutely hot. While a hot yoga room is ideal, teaching is VERY important to me. Mori, the owner, is exceptional!!! She is, what I would refer to in the yoga world, a Master Teacher. She is extremely knowledgable about the body, the yoga practice, has over 20 years of teaching experience, and radiates positive energy. She has funny jokes, inspiring quotes, and advanced corrections which is particularly important to someone like me who has almost 22 years of yoga practice. She walks around with a ruler, ensures proper alignment, and provided me with hands on corrections, which I just adore. Thank you, Mori. Her rays of sunshine alleviated (some of) my suffering - after all, I chose to practice in the hottest spot in the room (far left when facing the mirror). Mori did kindly advise me of that spot, but I love a challenge. Let me say, Mori's class is a pleasant challenge. I have practiced at 100s of studios around the US and other countries. I have very high standards. Mori meets Every Single One of them. Would I practice here again? Absolutely. The studio has showers, lockers (bring your own lock), towels/mats for rent, and cubby holes for shoes at the door. Mori of Breathing Dragon has fostered a beautiful community of welcoming practitioners.
