We attended the season opener at the Richmond Memorial Auditorium this past Saturday, the SF Rolling Dead vs the Oakland Outlaws, and it was entertaining and interesting learning about the sport, as this was our first time watching. The first whistle took place two hours after the doors opened. We arrived a bit early, so we checked out the merchandise vendors in the lobby, and got a couple drinks from the bar, the Crimson Cowboy (Oakland Outlaws themed cocktail) and Vodka Grim-let (SF Rolling Dead themed cocktail). They were both delish, as we rooted for the Bunnies during the juniors game, before start time for the main event. Pickles N Smoke also sold bbq dishes on site, but there was a long line for this, especially at intermission. The game lasted no more than one and a half hours, including the break. And watching the players on the floor do their thing made me wanna go skating too (without the full contact). Never knew how much I'd enjoy the roller derby :)

It was so much fun watching the game with other fans. Almost everyone was wearing some Warriors gears. We're all cheering when the Warriors took over OKC briefly at one point. Such a great atmosphere. There're also some short games, performances, parachute/t-shirt giveaways. Never a dull moment. On the other hand, I was disappointed that Steve Curry was injured and we didn't have a chance to see him play. Warriors lost the game, but it was still a great experience for me. So much better than watching the game on TV. Go Warriors!

Signed up for a once a week for 5 weeks baseball camp because little league starts soon. The…read morewebsite talks about honing hitting, throwing, and fielding skills, however the kids just goofed off all day with some games, which kids did have some fun, but there were no real drills or skills coaching. Not exactly what I was paying for. To make matters worse was that there were several instances of bullying and fighting and the coaches were unaware. And when they were made aware, they didn't tell the parents. My kid sprained his hand and I didn't know why for 2 weeks until another incident happened and I started talking to other parents and kids. This bully was starting fights between kids and basically had a lunch time fight club going on. My kid had to fight two other boys. After the final incident, in which the coaches and kids admit my kid didn't say what he was accused of saying, they kicked him out anyway. Of course, bully from week one and two was involved again. The coaches never said a word to me. They emailed me. They didn't even bother to reply to my emails. They appear to be protecting one of the kids because his dad pays for a lot of camps and sponsors the little league and has a high profile in Alameda. Had the coaches properly supervised the kids and notified parents of the previous fights and issues between the boys, much of this drama could have been avoided. They never even bothered to tell me of these incidents. Where's the supervision? I should have known better when nobody even had to sign kids in and out. Our kids aren't exactly safe with these guys.

Look to the Bay Area Derby Girls in the East Bay to see real competition. But I will say that the banked track (as opposed to the flat track of B.A.D. I think you do. which is why, roller derby lives again! it is a ridiculously entertaining cross between WWF and NASCAR, with funky, 70's realness, 4 wheeled skates (remember those?) and an enthusiastic crowd which was mostly families and hipsters when i went. roller derby is not something I know much about, I am not the WWF type, and I have never seen the reality show (Rollergirls?) so i was pretty clueless about what was going on--but it doesn't matter. you really don't have to know the rules to enjoy it. Just have some drinks and watch the girls (and guys) in shorts fly around the banked track, knocking each other down and doing a milder version of WWF-style takedowns, complete with skate kicks, flipping out of the ring, and generally scrubbing out on a regular basis. But don't worry, kids, the violence isn't real. The fans (who presumably do know what is going on, unlike me) are very enthusiastic, there is a scoreboard and everything, and the overall effect is the fun part of a sporting event, but on fast forward. and with hair-pulling. Also the skating itself takes talent, and is pretty amazing. And they all have great nicknames. I don't think they sell drinks there (maybe beer?) so make sure you get some drinks beforehand (pick a bar, any bar, on haight street, or kezar pub is right across the street from the entrance, if you like crowded smelly sports bars). or sneak drinks in, there was no security check. There is a parking lot next door, in case you can't find anything on the street. The tickets are around $10, the seating is bleacher style, and if you are from SF, you are rooting for the Bay City Bombers--colors are orange and black, like the giants. Last time I went to root for my friend Ron, #30 (Roll, Ronny, Roll!) and we made our own signs and fit right it. If i remember right, you can get sodas and popcorn there, not much else. For $10, this is something fun and different to do on a Sat night. And, it is over at 10 or 10:30, plenty of time to go out after. The next "bout" is Sat Aug 18th @ 8PM at Kezar. I had no idea what to expect since I had never witnessed arena football. The pyrotechnics were both scary and awesome! I am still confused as to why I did not see an actual Sabercat mascot, but the dude on the motorcycle was interesting. Mad love to the Saberkittens for putting on an awesome show. I love their spirit! I will definitely return sometime, and take advantage of the 4 pack deal. $50 gets you four tickets, hot dogs, sodas, and chips. Support your local sports teams!

HP Pavilion (7:30 p.m.): My dad and I went to the game on Saturday (San Jose played the Utah Blaze). It was at least the 6th SaberCats game that I've been to. As usual, we saved money by parking nearby (it's interesting how many houses are just across the street from HP Pavilion- a house a block away is now up for sale). When we arrived, my dad let himself be frisked. It was comical (he just walked over to one of the guys and raised his arms- I briefly wondered if he had done something in the past that I was unaware of). I had about as many items on me, but just walked right up to the doors. The edges of the main stairs currently feature some cool images of the San Jose Sharks (it's sad that they just got eliminated from the playoffs). We had great seats (we were 10 rows back, and were only blocked off from seeing kicks go through the left uprights), and our tickets were just $9 each (my dad took advantage of a promotion). The guy to my left was annoying (he went to the game with his dad too, and I wish his dad had been sitting next to me). He had some booming claps (he almost made me go deaf), and he was too wound up early on (he clapped over every little thing). Only 2 vendors were around (I'm glad that we weren't hungry- only a few kiosks were open too). One sold cotton candy, and the other sold Dippin' Dots (Banana; Chocolate; Rainbow). I was tempted to buy some, but didn't. The woman who sang "The Star-Spangled Banner" was pretty fine. She also had a beautiful voice (I actually noticed). T&A: "Stop teasing me!" (what a guy behind us kept saying to the young woman who goes out on the field to signal the beginning and end of commercial breaks). The woman is "too skinny" for my dad's taste, and I think the woman the current one replaced was hotter. It's cute, though, the way the new woman dances. You can tell that she has a lot of fun during games (the other woman was more serious). The SaberKittens were also standing very close to us, but I didn't actually look at them much. With a few exceptions, the women aren't that hot this year. The Kiss Cam action kind of sucked. Too many old couples were featured, and this one guy was clueless as to what he was supposed to do until the camera started to cut away. A ton of penalties were called. This guy and his sons couldn't make up their minds: "Hey refs! You suck!" "Hey refs! You're great!" o_O A Utah wide receiver made a "flying catch over the boards," and another one went over the boards a few minutes later. It was also memorable when San Jose defensive back Clevan Thomas made a 50-yard interception return for a touchdown in the 3rd quarter. The SaberCats normally draw over 10,000 fans (the attendance on Saturday was 8,438). Still, it often got very loud inside. Some fans also did some crazy dances. A few guys even took off their shirts ("No, no. Put your shirts back on. Please."). I kind of agree with another reviewer ("no more cowbell!"). I'm used to it, but some fans bring cowbells and ring them too fuc---- much. You might think that you're at a farm. Free!: The SaberCats have always treated their fans well. This is what was given away during the game: -3 footballs (fans get to keep balls that wind up in the stands). A guy at the end of our row caught the ball that was thrown away at the end of the game. -A whole row got Lillie Mae's "famous" BBQ sauce. -Another row got Buffalo Wild Wings (I think this occurred when a guy threw a football between the uprights- he had 2 tries, but was good in his 1st attempt). -Another row got Round Table Pizza. -Yet another got In-N-Out food (in most cases, vouchers are given out only). The crowd went crazy, by the way, when the logo was flashed. -As usual, some T-shirts were shot or launched into the stands. -5,000 fans got a Program/Green Night Reusable Shopping Bag (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/san-jose-sabercats-san-jose?select=1VBDoLhLt0EYFkHTGFJitQ#yAaOuPNkLRMGMNuEwLf6oQ). Some pictures from 3 fans that were posted online during the game were shown on the scoreboard. I think the last fan won a spa treatment. Halftime: 4 teams of 7-year-olds played flag football. The action was hard to follow (the announcer had to keep turning his attention from one side of the field to the other), but kind of exciting.
