These women are hardcore intense and fierce! I loved watching them have fun out there. It was nice seeing competition while sharing smiles and laughs with each other. It was my first time watching Bay Area Derby Girls, I got to see Richmond vs. Berkeley (richmond won this one) and Oakland vs. SF. Very good matchups and I LOVED how the unique crowd was so into it! The atmosphere set the tone for a competitive and fun match. Took me a while to pick up all the rules, but after you know what's going on, you're pretty much glued. My first experience, but not my last!

FIRST AND FOREMOST: Roller Derby is a real sport. It's not contrived or staged. It's exciting. And it's super fun to watch. THAT SAID: The whole scene is cool. Off the track are all sorts of jewelry and fashion vendors, food/snack booths and trucks, and beer. B-e-e-e-e-e-e-r! It's sort of a carnival or street fair atmosphere. The athletes are working hard and having fun. The crowd is rowdy and supportive. BETTER STILL: Is the action. Once you understand how it's scored you can cheer for the jammers as they get assists and break through the pack or pull a Mr. Wilson. Har! These are fit, skilled women -- all sparkled up in exotic make-up and looking very hot in their shorts -- zooming around the track. What could be better? Well ... nevermind. IN BRIEF: It's a terrific way to spend an evening, support a local team and hang out with a bunch of cool people. Bring friends -- we go as a group and have a great time. Go Oakland Outlaws!!!

This is Fight Club for girls and its AMAZING!!! When my cousin called me on Saturday morning suggesting that we go to the roller derby in Oakland, my initial reaction was what the FAWK?!?!?!? But hey, I'm game. So we drive to the depths of the Oakland warehouse wasteland to get to Dry Ice, a rickety old wood framed roller rink where they've set up for tonight's bout between the Treasure Island Gold Diggers and the Alcatraz Escapees of the Bay Area Derby Girls League (B.A.D. for short). There are rabid fans everywhere and it's a motley collection of every type of rabble Oaktown has to offer: there are punks, bikers, meth heads, gothic ghosts, anarchists, anti-christers, rastas, A's fans, homeboys, androgynous horned-rim wearing hipsters, transvestites, cross-dressers, trans-genders, cross-genders, trans-dressers, cross-vestites and every other stripe imaginable, including the adoring parents and family members of the roller girls wearing t-shirts reading "B.A.D. MOM". Its chaos from the get-go as tatt'd promoters strain to organize the growing throngs of derby fans and freaks trying to get through the gauntlet at the tiny front entrance of the arena; what would become of us in case of a fire, we just didn't want to imagine, especially with the concession selling $3 cans of Bud and with all the Oaktown rabble hanging out the windows chaining cigarettes all night. It's 9:30 and the action is about to get started. We score a great vantage point upstairs looking down on the whole floor, which is covered with some kind of tiling and an oval track laid out in blue tape with a string of red lights delineating out-of-bounds. The left end of the arena is occupied by the Gold Diggers' fans, the right end by the Escapees' true blue. The place is absolutely HEAVING with human energy. Easily over a thousand people were crammed into the place for this event, apparently up from last month's bout pitting the Bay Area Derby Girls' All-stars against a team of hot sluts from Las Vegas. Netting hangs between the rafters and the upper railings. Its basically Thunder Dome, but Tina Turner has dreadlocks and stud piercings in both cheeks. The teams are introduced --- first the Gold Diggers and then the home team Escapees. These Diggers are big and daunting; dressed in jet black blouses and pleated mini-skirts, some of them wearing gold-sequined panties which they are glad to show off for you. Don't even wonder if they have tattoos; these brawny ladies are living artwork. Hair of every color under the neon rainbow. Each is introduced by the M.C. while shooting out onto the track. The secret weapons are sent out onto the floor: Hurricane Skatrina and Injure Rogers, the team's all-star jammers. This is a tour de force and a parade of intimidation as they swing by the booing Escapees' fans, bearing sequined panties and all. Then the Escapees are introduced. My cousin and I are surprised to see that they are more feminine, more demure, perhaps a bit more... understated. These girls aren't all tatt'd up, their hair washed, but they are still strong and determined. We develop crushes on the team's two star jammers, Iva Vendetta - the first to capture our hearts; we are in love with this girl and she skates like a champ - and Panda Monium, a fiery redhead, her eye sockets painted black in a nod to her namesake. Roller derby is intensely serious and very physical. The bout is broken into three 20 minute periods to give the girls much needed (and deserved) respite from the heated action on the track. Each team has ten girls, and a total of ten girls are skating at any one time, five for each team. Four are blockers and there is one jammer--the only team member who can score points. She scores a point every time she can break all the way through the opposing team's gauntlet of four blockers. There is a lot of pushing, prodding, blocking and a few major collisions accompanied by the "oohs" and "ahhs" of the crowd. The Gold Diggers get off to a staggering lead and by the second period, are ahead by 25 points. The Escapees mount a truly inspiring comeback in the third period sending the right side of the arena into a frenzy. But the Diggers combination of brawn and brute force proves too much for the home team to handle and the Escapees end up losing by a final score of 67-74. Injure Rogers lived up to her name, taking out several girls in the third period. Google this and you may be surprised to discover that promoters are really breathing renewal back into this once celebrated and very unorthodox sport. A whole new roller derby sub-culture is sweeping like wildfire across the United States. It started out in LA, and now all the major cities have leagues. If you have yet to see - or even hear about - roller derby, I strongly suggest that you think about going to their website and reserve tickets today. THIS RULES! http://www.bayareaderbygirls.com

Not exactly what I was paying for. To make matters worse was that there were several instances of bullying and fighting and the coaches were unaware. And when they were made aware, they didn't tell the parents. My kid sprained his hand and I didn't know why for 2 weeks until another incident happened and I started talking to other parents and kids. This bully was starting fights between kids and basically had a lunch time fight club going on. My kid had to fight two other boys. After the final incident, in which the coaches and kids admit my kid didn't say what he was accused of saying, they kicked him out anyway. Of course, bully from week one and two was involved again. The coaches never said a word to me. They emailed me. They didn't even bother to reply to my emails. They appear to be protecting one of the kids because his dad pays for a lot of camps and sponsors the little league and has a high profile in Alameda. Had the coaches properly supervised the kids and notified parents of the previous fights and issues between the boys, much of this drama could have been avoided. They never even bothered to tell me of these incidents. Where's the supervision? I should have known better when nobody even had to sign kids in and out. Our kids aren't exactly safe with these guys.

I think you do. which is why, roller derby lives again! it is a ridiculously entertaining cross between WWF and NASCAR, with funky, 70's realness, 4 wheeled skates (remember those?) and an enthusiastic crowd which was mostly families and hipsters when i went. roller derby is not something I know much about, I am not the WWF type, and I have never seen the reality show (Rollergirls?) so i was pretty clueless about what was going on--but it doesn't matter. you really don't have to know the rules to enjoy it. Just have some drinks and watch the girls (and guys) in shorts fly around the banked track, knocking each other down and doing a milder version of WWF-style takedowns, complete with skate kicks, flipping out of the ring, and generally scrubbing out on a regular basis. But don't worry, kids, the violence isn't real. The fans (who presumably do know what is going on, unlike me) are very enthusiastic, there is a scoreboard and everything, and the overall effect is the fun part of a sporting event, but on fast forward. and with hair-pulling. Also the skating itself takes talent, and is pretty amazing. And they all have great nicknames. I don't think they sell drinks there (maybe beer?) so make sure you get some drinks beforehand (pick a bar, any bar, on haight street, or kezar pub is right across the street from the entrance, if you like crowded smelly sports bars). or sneak drinks in, there was no security check. There is a parking lot next door, in case you can't find anything on the street. The tickets are around $10, the seating is bleacher style, and if you are from SF, you are rooting for the Bay City Bombers--colors are orange and black, like the giants. Last time I went to root for my friend Ron, #30 (Roll, Ronny, Roll!) and we made our own signs and fit right it. If i remember right, you can get sodas and popcorn there, not much else. For $10, this is something fun and different to do on a Sat night. And, it is over at 10 or 10:30, plenty of time to go out after. The next "bout" is Sat Aug 18th @ 8PM at Kezar. And if you really like it, they have open track times for the general public/ training. There is more information on the (awful) website: baycitybombers.com

HP Pavilion (7:30 p.m.): My dad and I went to the game on Saturday (San Jose played the Utah Blaze). It was at least the 6th SaberCats game that I've been to. As usual, we saved money by parking nearby (it's interesting how many houses are just across the street from HP Pavilion- a house a block away is now up for sale). When we arrived, my dad let himself be frisked. It was comical (he just walked over to one of the guys and raised his arms- I briefly wondered if he had done something in the past that I was unaware of). I had about as many items on me, but just walked right up to the doors. The edges of the main stairs currently feature some cool images of the San Jose Sharks (it's sad that they just got eliminated from the playoffs). We had great seats (we were 10 rows back, and were only blocked off from seeing kicks go through the left uprights), and our tickets were just $9 each (my dad took advantage of a promotion). The guy to my left was annoying (he went to the game with his dad too, and I wish his dad had been sitting next to me). He had some booming claps (he almost made me go deaf), and he was too wound up early on (he clapped over every little thing). Only 2 vendors were around (I'm glad that we weren't hungry- only a few kiosks were open too). One sold cotton candy, and the other sold Dippin' Dots (Banana; Chocolate; Rainbow). I was tempted to buy some, but didn't. The woman who sang "The Star-Spangled Banner" was pretty fine. She also had a beautiful voice (I actually noticed). T&A: "Stop teasing me!" (what a guy behind us kept saying to the young woman who goes out on the field to signal the beginning and end of commercial breaks). The woman is "too skinny" for my dad's taste, and I think the woman the current one replaced was hotter. It's cute, though, the way the new woman dances. You can tell that she has a lot of fun during games (the other woman was more serious). The SaberKittens were also standing very close to us, but I didn't actually look at them much. With a few exceptions, the women aren't that hot this year. The Kiss Cam action kind of sucked. Too many old couples were featured, and this one guy was clueless as to what he was supposed to do until the camera started to cut away. A ton of penalties were called. This guy and his sons couldn't make up their minds: "Hey refs! You suck!" "Hey refs! You're great!" o_O A Utah wide receiver made a "flying catch over the boards," and another one went over the boards a few minutes later. It was also memorable when San Jose defensive back Clevan Thomas made a 50-yard interception return for a touchdown in the 3rd quarter. The SaberCats normally draw over 10,000 fans (the attendance on Saturday was 8,438). Still, it often got very loud inside. Some fans also did some crazy dances. A few guys even took off their shirts ("No, no. Put your shirts back on. Please."). I kind of agree with another reviewer ("no more cowbell!"). I'm used to it, but some fans bring cowbells and ring them too fuc---- much. You might think that you're at a farm. Free!: The SaberCats have always treated their fans well. This is what was given away during the game: -3 footballs (fans get to keep balls that wind up in the stands). A guy at the end of our row caught the ball that was thrown away at the end of the game. -A whole row got Lillie Mae's "famous" BBQ sauce. -Another row got Buffalo Wild Wings (I think this occurred when a guy threw a football between the uprights- he had 2 tries, but was good in his 1st attempt). -Another row got Round Table Pizza. -Yet another got In-N-Out food (in most cases, vouchers are given out only). The crowd went crazy, by the way, when the logo was flashed. -As usual, some T-shirts were shot or launched into the stands. -5,000 fans got a Program/Green Night Reusable Shopping Bag (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/san-jose-sabercats-san-jose?select=1VBDoLhLt0EYFkHTGFJitQ#yAaOuPNkLRMGMNuEwLf6oQ). Some pictures from 3 fans that were posted online during the game were shown on the scoreboard. I think the last fan won a spa treatment. Halftime: 4 teams of 7-year-olds played flag football. The action was hard to follow (the announcer had to keep turning his attention from one side of the field to the other), but kind of exciting. Only 1 girl played, but she actually scored a touchdown. :) http://www.thesanjosesabercats.com/news_details.php?id=540: The SaberCats almost gave me a heart attack (the game was finally decided with 11 seconds left to play, and San Jose only scored on 4 of their 9 possessions- this is pitiful for an Arena Football team), but they beat the Blaze 35-34.
