I took lessons with Joseph last year and he taught me to drive well. He is a patient and knowledgeable instructor. However, I also found him to be unprofessional and creepy at times. I am a quiet person and while I was polite and receptive to his small talk, I did not initiate or engage with it more than necessary. He made jokes about this after every single session saying that I "talked too much." Annoying, but not a big deal. However, after one particular session, when he dropped me off, he joked by telling me to "be a good girl or your mom won't give you a lollipop." You cannot make this shit up. Who says that?? I felt uncomfortable and repulsed by this strange comment. Once I passed my driving test, he handed me a stack of flyers for his driving school and asked me to put them up around my college campus to advertise him. I thought this was very unprofessional. He also took it upon himself to use some of our lessons as "highway practice" rather than preparing me for the driving test, clearly as a way to get more lessons and money out of me. In my opinion, if you are a young girl learning to drive who is not very assertive or talkative, he will take advantage of that. But take this as you will. read more

I got my license at another school but wanted more practice. I have no explanation for the dangerous situation I ended up in. Currently Joseph, the owner, is the only one working (which explains the many days that go by unable to reach his office that I and others experienced). Perhaps it's him being spread too thin, or the heatwave we were having, but what happened should not have happened, and I hope it doesn't happen to someone else. From the start communicating was difficult. There was not much focus on technique with clear verbal guidelines and visual cues - he could tell you when you did something wrong but it was hard to get him to elaborate on solutions to fix it. Often requests for clarification resulted in him repeating himself, in one instance him repeating "Oops" meant I was too close to another car, but I had to tell him to use words other than "oops" so I could understand him. He also doesn't tailor lessons to build on skills you already have - he repeats "stop at this stop sign" or "give the right side the right of way during a left turn", regardless of whether or not you do these things naturally. There's no balance between caution and building good driving habits through autonomy. He also grabs the wheel frequently instead of verbally guiding you to course correct. After all this he told me I was ready to purchase a car. If you're grabbing my wheel either I'm not ready or you shouldn't be doing that. There's more, but nothing matters after what happened during our last lesson. It was my first time driving on a NY highway - the Grand Central. He had me switch into an exit lane and I looked around and said, "I think the guy behind me is going to let me go so I am going to change lanes". He didn't stop me but said after the driver behind me was too close. I didn't understand how he knew that so asked if he could explain. Instead he asked me to change back into the lane I was just in. I said "I don't feel safe doing that". I am expressing fear before doing the maneuver he just said I did wrong to the person responsible for my safety. I don't want to hit another vehicle. Joseph said, "If you stay in this lane you are going to JFK, we are not going to JFK. Change lanes". Why switch to an exit lane we weren't using for such a short time anyway? But I said "OK. Do I slow down to do that or speed up?" He said: "Just change lanes". I repeated "I will but do I slow down or speed up?" He said "Change lanes! You are in airport lane we are not going to airport just change lanes!" I said "Damn it Joseph just tell me to slow down or speed up!" At this point I am almost at the divider separating the exits going 50mph. "I am telling you! Change lanes!" Knuckles white and breathing hard I winged it. We then proceeded to get into a 15 minute shouting match as Joseph accused me of not following directions. I said I asked for clarification so I didn't repeat my mistake and asked again. He said, "The problem with you is you think you know everything, you're not the boss". I pointed out asking questions shows I'm trying to learn. I am flabbergasted that he decided to pick a fight over requesting instructions during my FIRST time on a NY highway - THIS IS FLAGRANTLY DANGEROUS & IRRESPONSIBLE. I am still driving on the highway during the argument. I asked again, should I have slowed down or sped up? He argued more. I asked again. He did not answer instead lecturing me on a mistake I made two lessons ago saying I don't follow directions. My original question now asked at least SIX times remained unanswered. I asked again. The response? "When did you give me time to respond?" I think my mouth literally hung open at such a childish answer. Obviously, he could have answered the first time. I have no idea why he didn't just say "When changing lanes do XYZ. I'll walk you through it", like an instructor should. "Just do it" is not instruction, a Nike sweatshirt could have given me that sage advice. Perhaps most importantly he did not attempt to deescalate the argument. He refused to give instruction on a highway, picked a fight, personally attacked me, and refused to admit that his handling of the situation could have been better because, "You hired me, not the other way around, you are not the boss". He also never asked me to stop driving so he could take over - I completed the entire drive, taking the highway to Queens Blvd even though holy hell I was scared. Fighting with the person you entrust with your life during your first time on the highway is a terrifying experience I don't wish on anyone. The argument distracted him so much we got lost and he had to use his GPS to get us back - he clearly lost control of the situation. I had the cost of my last remaining lesson refunded. read more

I literally just passed my road test (first time!) an hour ago and never threw myself at Yelp faster than I did just now. Blame Joseph. I never got my license, but told myself I'd get it before I turned thirty. I just turned 29 five days ago, and passed my test! I had very little driving experience in upstate NY and I've maybe been behind the wheel for 2 attempts 10 years ago, but Joseph immediately made me feel comfortable. I have a LOT (and I mean a lot) of driving anxiety. I've always been fearful behind the wheel but from day one Joseph helped me feel comfortable, and within days, even confident. I scheduled 12 lessons (6 lessons of 1.5hrs) along with my five hour course effortlessly. The total cost of my package, including the lessons, car for the road test, and 5 hours course was around $700. He helped explain to me tricks of the trade, things to look out for, and made the daunting task of driving in NYC easy (spoiler: it's not as scary as you think it is). We focused on the things I wasn't so great at, and he gave me helpful feedback on how to correct those things before my test. We had amazing banter, and I always looked forward to driving and chatting with him in the car. He felt like family, and I'm going to miss my 8am drives with Joseph. I signed up for the package that included 20 lessons (10 lessons x 1.5 hours each), warm up before road test and car for road test. The road test consists of a number of driving schools/vehicles helping their students pass their tests and I can confidently say that the road test is no easy feat (based on the 3 people I saw fail after I went). If I could give it zero stars, I would. Please do yourself a favor do not go to this driving school, especially to female. He is not good at all. He charges way too much and gets very sexual. He touched my hand and hair while I was driving. This is way too much from a stranger/driving teacher. He likes to control the speed, there's a brake and pedal on his side, even you don't drive fast. He tells you when to drive, turn, and stop. My first three lessons were only driving around in Flushing area. I had to ask him to teach me how to park and three points turn. He told me I wasn't ready for that. I wasn't ready to park but I could drive? Free drop off and pick up are only available in Astoria his office or Fresh Meadows where he lives. I asked him to meet in St. Albans for the last lesson, he said the cost is not include pick up and drop off. Really????? Please check your website if you forget what you told me before I signed up. He asked me to write a good review on Yelp in the beginning of my second class. I wasn't sure about it, but after the third class I was very much done with him. He was getting very intense. I sucked it up and finished the class. I'm so happy that I'm able to share this horrible experience here. In fact, I don't know why there are so many 5 stars reviews. I know I'm not the only person going through all these problems and harassment. Please please please do more research before you pay for this driving school. After reading a ton of reviews here I went with this Driving School for my spouse who's only driven on straight roads against no traffic in the South..... MUCH DIFFERENT than driving in NYC streets. So we went with the most basic package. For $350 (if I remember correctly) there was about 4hrs of instruction, 5hr class, booked road test AND they provided the vehicle you'd use during the road test. Joseph was his instructor and after barely 4 hours of instruction (across a few lessons) my spouse felt confident in securing his Drivers License. Well in less than a month from paying for the package the lessons were booked quickly and simply and the road test date was secured. Joseph went above and beyond for him and helped him to feel completely secure. And guess what?!!! HE PASSED ON HIS FIRST TRY!!!!! The process for organizing the lessons was very straightforward - I called the number on the website, got through to Joseph's daughter and arranged to go in the office to sort through the details. Joseph himself is very friendly and patient, and will give honest, constructive criticism that is very helpful. I passed the road test on my first try last week. Joseph is a great instructor. I shifted to him from another instructor who was too strict and made me very nervous when driving. On the contrary, Joseph showed respect and confidence in me and never shouted to me for my mistakes. This build up my confidence in maneuvering the car. I think confidence is more important than the skills in passing the road test. Joseph never rushed to finish the class within the paid time but rather spend a few more minutes after the class explaining to me what I did well or not well. I am so happy that I shifted to Joseph. I've had really unsatisfactory experiences (I've never taken a test before, but I quit after trying 1-2 lessons) at other driving schools including a nearby popular Astoria driving school that shall not be named. All the other schools have dirty cars, impatient drivers, etc. - and I'm actually a pretty laid back person and wouldn't mention this type of stuff unless the cars were absolutely DISGUSTING (papers everywhere, smoke, food, yuck.) But this place is pretty much run privately by Joseph, the owner, and he teaches all of his students personally. He is funny, kind, and has great technique. He's so calm and never makes you feel like you're doing badly (even when you are). I successfully got my driver's license today, first try. You can't go wrong with him! read more

Joseph, the driving school owner and also the teacher, is really a very good coacher. He not only teaches you how to pass the exam but also how to be a good and safe driver. He is very patient with someone like myself who has never sit in a driver spot. From a road test perspective, the mock road test exercise is particularly helpful where Joseph pretends he is the inspector and gives instructions on different roads. Joseph is also a very nice person and offered great flexibility on schedule. He also reminds you before the class and road test to ensure a timely start. This place has the most interesting business model of any business I've ever encountered. It goes like this: -Don't respond to the contact form on the website -Don't answer the phone -Don't respond to voicemail -Don't open the door to the actual business Yes. That's right. I used the contact form. I called, twice, once leaving a voicemail. NOTHING. And just yesterday, I actually went to the business at 5pm (during open hours), and no one answered the door.
