My search for the perfect working-from-home lunch trip continues, and this week marched me a mere hop skip and jump from my front door to Golden Loaf - what appears from the outside to be a temple devoted to the praise of cream cakes.
Once I looked a little further inside though I noticed that they've got quite an extensive sandwich menu hidden behind the array of pastries. You can get the standard semi-Italian fare of filled sangers, rolls, paninis and baguettes - you know, chicken, bacon, mozzarella, pesto, tomato - that kind of thing. Prices are pretty good - from £2 to about £3.50 for the most laden bready stick you can get.
The interior of the shop is a little tired, but the owner is cheery enough and seems happy with his days inside with his mistuned telly. There's a small suntrap garden out the back. My lunch was good and filling. It was fine, really. I probably shan't become a regular, but it's a good little place to have around the corner. Or, it's a bad place to have around the corner as from now on I'll walk past to look at cakes, and will end up going back for a doughnut with sprinkles.
UPDATE I have already been back, but to buy bread. It was a very good loaf indeed. Bouncing up a point for good bread action. read more
