This is a super lovely spot for brunch. Or to grab-and-go. Or to be the most popular person at your next picnic/social gathering/any event that benefits from the addition of carbs (see: ALL EVENTS).
Brickhouse is just over a year old, but the buzz of people who have discovered this gem tucked off the main drag shows just how quickly it has become popular.
The star of the show is their sourdough: the Peckham Rye is their 'signature loaf' and it's stacked up on racks right when you walk into the bright, airy space. I love the option to just purchase half a loaf, too; no matter how delicious sometimes it's tough to commit to powering through a full loaf solo.
There are 'breakfast'y items behind the case like chelsea buns, and sweet things that are never my go-tos. Instead I opt for either a sausage roll (4GBP and well worth it for how it's stuffed full of fennel-studded sausage) or the savoury corn muffin which balances the sweetness of the corn with chili and - surprise! - a hard boiled egg inside. Lunch specials rotate: when I was in today, for instance, an egg and bresaola (sp?) salad was on offer. I almost jumped for it; it looked _perfect_ in that "well-suited to Instagram" kinda way (you know, unfussy food styling and lots of bright natural light? That's kind of the Brickhouse vibe).
Large communal tables, 'bar style' seating too. Breakfasts can be sourdough with avocado (side of bacon extra!), or eggs. More substantial options also available, and at 11:30 the lunch rolls out. Cheese toasties, salads (shout-out to the kale and anchovy), special sandwich that seems to result from some Brickhouse genius imagination (I APPROVE). Oh, oh! Special shout-out to the peanutbutteriest peanut butter cookie. Magic, if that's your thing (it just happens to be mine).
Lovely space, bright, open, great staff, good quality simple-but-special food. This is a gem and worth the detour if it's anywhere close to your flight path.
Yelp note: it's a big open space and gets...noisy. In a lovely way - babies and families and high-pitched girls laughing about the morning after the night before - but it's probably not where you'll get some totally zen work done. Noise reverberates and it's more of a lively spot than a mellow coffee den. Just FYI those of you packing up your laptops; unpack 'em, bring a friend along instead, and enjoy a coffee read more
