We rented two electric bikes (about $90 each) from Golden Gate Bike Rental for a ride across the bridge to Sausalito. I'd had a wonderful e-bike experience in Rome, so I expected something similar. The available bikes looked older and worn, with very little to choose from. The one I picked had no kickstand and a seat that was too low, and the employee never checked it or explained how it worked before sending us off. About 20 minutes in, the motor wouldn't engage on the first uphill. We had to FaceTime the store for help, then return to get the seat raised, which cost us about an hour. Halfway to Sausalito, the pedal assist cut out again. No one answered our calls for a while, and when we finally reached someone, we learned the system needs a full reset after being turned off and on. Nobody had told us this. Meanwhile, Lyft bikes costing $15 a day were passing me on the hill. We ended up cutting our Sausalito visit short by a couple of hours. For this price, I expected well-maintained bikes and a proper orientation. I'd recommend looking at other rental options in the area. read more

Updated address: 464 Sutter St The staff was SUPER nice and helpful. I walked out with the bike under 5 minutes and the entire process was smooth and quick. I ended up getting an electric bike and rode almost 50 miles. I had absolutely no issues with the bike. It was well maintained and ended up doing over 3000' of elevation gain on a single charge. I went from the shop, over the GG Bridge to Marin City. On the loop back I did the GG Vista Point, south across the bridge and looped GG Park. No issues with any of the paths, roads or terrain on the bike. They also provide a helmet and lock so you can stop and take pictures or eat. If you work for an airline make sure you let them know. They give a great discount. They also have a membership program that I think is an incredible deal. I couldn't recommend this shop more! read more

Had a terrible experience with a flat tire on my e-bike. Brought it in to get fixed, then brought it to my office, and a few hours later was completely flat again. At that point I was stuck without a way to get to a Warriors playoff game, which caused all sorts of headaches. Had to leave it at my office till Saturday, then came downtown again. I got no sympathy from Biguyan, nor even an "i'm sorry". He just said it wasn't his fault, and then said that actually he needed to sell me a new tire now. Don't come here for repairs -- it may be fine as a rental shop but I don't trust his thoroughness or concentration to do the job right the first time. read more

Horrible experience!!! As a yelper I figured wow 5 stars why yes sir! Why would I even think twice before going here with a 5 star rating. I have used BLAZING SADDLES my previous trip, however it was such an incredible time I booked a trip to San Francisco over Fourth of July to leave the heat in Vegas ONLY TO RIDE AN ELECTRIC BIKE!!! Staying in Union Square I decided to visit Golden Gate Rides since they are located closer to my hotel and had great reviews. I called the company knowing it was a holiday weekend to find out pricing and availability for 2 electric bikes. I was told $50 something each and 2 electric bikes are available. Get to the location and I am greeted by a friendly gentleman. I let him know how I had just called for 2 electric bikes. He starts to show us the bikes when a knock makes him stop and acknowledge. He lets in a big group and starts to address them and forget about us. Ok no problem, but then the phone rings making him stop and answer the call. The gentlemen had us and the group pay go online and pay. Once we paid he gave us the bikes and we were on our way. After using the bike for 4 hours the batteries run out since we crossed the bridge and returned. We weren't concerned until we plugged in the additional battery he gave us only to find out it was not fully charged. Paddled my way back to the bike shop to return the bikes after only 4 hours of use even when I paid for a full day which is allotted for 12-24hrs. The gentlemen could only say "Sorry" Thought that was the end of my interaction to only find out I got charged additional $56 dollars hours after I returned the bike. True example of BAIT AND SWITCH. I have uploaded pictures of my screenshots of receipts showing the payments Take a look for yourselves at the time on the right top corner of when each charge was made. I could deal and handle everything else however it is ridiculous to be charged more when I should have received a partial refund. BEWARE of business.Just go to Blazing Saddles or another bike shop. BUT IF you dare to gamble your experience in visiting this business I hope you have a better experience then ours. read more

We rented bikes while visiting San Francisco and had a great experience with Golden Gate Rides. I would highly recommend renting a bike as a way to explore the city. We saw most of the city in a day and made pit stops wherever we wanted. Our bike ride ended up being the most memorable part of our vacation. The bikes were in excellent shape and the rates were reasonable. We were able to walk right in and get e-bikes that fit us, along with a lock and helmet. Our ride back took a little longer than expected, but they were understanding and didn't charge us more. Bike were solid. We or a lock and a small bag that was attached to the front of the handle bars. It was large enough to hold a water bottle, wallet, etc. The bike also had a water bottle holder too, but we couldn't use it with our skinny Costco water bottle. Check in was pretty quick; we reserved online the day of. We just had to provide our confirmation number. From here, the review will be of going into Sausalito... From the store, we rode to the waterfront, over Golden Gate Bridge, and down into Sausalito. The ride from the bridge to Sausalito is downhill along the road. Most of the downhill was in a bike lane, but the road back didn't appear to have a designated lane. Plus it was pretty steep so we didn't want to attempt the ride back. Instead, we got ferry tickets. There are two ferries to go across the water. The Gold and Blue ferry takes you back close to Pier 39. The Golden Gate ferry takes you to further south to Pier 1. We took the latter and biked it back to the store, which took about 1/2 hr. read more

If you are anywhere near this place, do not bother renting from anywhere else. The owner is extremely knowledgable and helpful. Not to mention, his bicycles are high end and in great repair. This proved to be handy as I rode pat numerous others on competitors bikes, which appeared to have been broken down. Once I told the owner what type of ride I was looking to do, he quickly took out the map and showed me the perfect route with a highlighter. He also took the time to explain the rules of the road and biking/driving habits in the area. He also provided any and all equipment I needed for the ride. I rented a bike from here and had a fantastic experience. On my last day in San Francisco, I planned to bike to the Golden Gate Bridge. I had an early afternoon flight to catch so I needed to be back at my apartment by 11am. I searched through several different bike rental shops and every single one opened at 9am, which wouldn't have given me nearly as much time to explore as I wanted. Fortunately, I stumbled across Golden Gate Rides, which amazingly opened at 6am! In addition, they also close at 9pm which is later than the 7pm closing time for most of the other bike rental shops I saw. Even though this didn't really matter in my situation, those two hours can make a huge difference if you want to catch a view of the bridge during sunset! I called the evening before and received a text from Bigyan asking for my height. He had my bike all set up and ready to go by 7am the next morning, so I picked it up and was on my way. The bike was in fantastic condition and I didn't have any problems with it in the three hours I used it. Near the end of ride, I tweaked a muscle biking up a hill and wasn't able to bike back. I called in and Bigyan drove over minutes later to pick up the bike. He wanted to know if there was anything he could've done better with the bike but I assured him that everything was perfectly fine with it and that it was just me and my novice uphill biking skills. Overall, I thought the service was exceptional as was the quality of the bike. If I ever decide to rent a bike in the city again, I'll be sure to reach out to this place! Note: Yelp and their website both currently list their address as 517 O'Farrell St but when I went in May they were actually at 609 O'Farrell St. This isn't such a huge deal since the two locations are literally a block away from each other but I just thought that it was worth mentioning. read more

People are always surprised to hear that my bike that I use every day to commute to work is a rental - a year long rental and GGR takes care of all the service. I found out about the program after coming to the shop to get something fixed on my old bike and when that bike finally died (became more expensive to repair than it was worth), it made perfect sense to start a membership. I could pay $800+ to buy a good bike (and have to pay for maintenance all year) or pay $400 for the year and they take care of all the service. And I would be getting a top of the line bike. I don't have the time or desire to learn the ins and outs of fixing all the things that come up, and now I don't have to. Flat tire? They'll just swap it out for a new tire and you're on your way. Repair shops can get expensive and it is often difficult to schedule with them - not with Golden Gate Rides. Could not be happier with my choice. Also spent some time trying to figure out whether "Vanessa M" is a real person or just someone who writes bizarre negative reviews with 5 stars.. no conclusion.. read more

Best choice for bike rental in City by far! Excellent Cannondale hybrid bikes, which you definitely need the lightweight and 27 gears for San Fransisco. My son and I were individually fitted to our bikes for size and experience, and we're given great service and advice for the ride we were doing (Golden Gate Bridge and Salcilido). Great place to rent bikes. Bryan helped us out and was so generous, gave us discounts which was so nice of him. My husband and I were able to knock off several of the tourist spots with the map provided by Bryan. They have electric bikes, great for the hilly routes of San Francisco. Honestly I would not have made it to the bridge if it weren't for those amazing bikes that took me up hill when I felt like I was about to pass out. *I suggest that if you are not that skilled in biking, avoid the electric bike or biking for a far distance. It could get a bit complicated and tiring especially if you are at the Golden Gate Bridge bike lanes (I almost hurt myself. Some parts of the bike lanes were too narrow). The shop does offer a ride back if ever you get stuck somewhere, just incase. You have the choice to have a tour guide or choice to go out on your own. My husband and I chose to go on our own and we biked from China Town area, all the way to Sausalito and back. It was a lot of fun but also a lot of work. If you decide to go over the bridge, bring a good wind breaker with you. It could get supper cold up there. But great view. I love biking and I enjoyed their service at this shop. Oh my goodness. I didn't know such a legit bike rental place even existed! Some of the nicest bikes I've seen (I'm not a pro haha) but I was able to use this tiny little nimble women's bike that was SO SMOOTH to ride I didn't even have to get off my bike on some of the huge SF hills! Flawless. (None of that sore-butt, crappy gear creaky old bikes you rent everywhere else for cheap). Seriously barely even sweat while biking about just because transitioning gears were so easy. THEY EVEN GIVE YOU AN OPTION TO GO-PRO YOUR HEADGEAR. WHO DOES THAT???? Not to mention coffee and tea service...I think the list goes on. Oh my. I own a bike that I take around the city. After leaving my helmet in an uber the night before, I called around local bike rentals shops to see if I can just rent a helmet for the day's ride while I wait for my replacement helmet to come in. When looking for a bike rental place in SF, stop right here. Bigyan is the nicest guy in the world, he's got great rental prices and some legit biking equipment that was properly fitted to us. The hubs and I rented two awesome Cannondale bikes from him for a half day ride to Sausalito and back. For those of you who have done the ride -- or those who are looking to do so -- definitely, definitely rent from Bigyan instead of one of the traditional companies like Blazing Saddles. The bikes are top notch and he's just an awesome dude running his own small business that seems to follow his passion. And, because he practices what he preaches and seems to bike the area a lot, he was able to give us some great, off the beaten path food and bar recommendations in Sausalito. You know, the types of places that locals go to avoid the people like us. The only thing to note is that the shop is located in the Tenderloin area of SF which is NOT a tourist destination. Suburban 1-percenter housewives may be shaking in their Tory Burch athleisure on the way to get the gear. To them I say, rent your bike at a place near Fisherman's Wharf and leave the real bikes for the rest of us. If you are a serious biker, looking for a quality bike to rent from a friendly and knowledgeable staff STOP this is the place that you're looking for! They have an excellent selection of top-tier bikes with absolutely no indication that the bike is a rental. In fact, I actually had a couple people say "nice bike!"when I was around town. The other bike rental places are fine for your average tourist - which is great if that's what you're looking for - a clunky, non-threatening, comfortable bike with a big squishy seat. You will see them all around town - especially along Embarcadero / Fishermans Warf. They are easy to see because they have these goofy bags on the handle bars with their rental company's name. And I am very thankful that they are easy to spot - because you can give them a wide berth and avoid them. But, with Golden Gate Rides, no one is going to know that you're on a rental. Hey, there's nothing wrong with the other rental companies. But, if you consider yourself to be beyond a beginner cyclist and are looking for equipment with quality, check out the folks a Golden Gate Rides. By the way, I rode to the top of the Marin Headlands and got a spectacular view of the fog rolling over the Golden Gate Bridge. Check out my video on their Facebook page.
