There is a trail head just in front of the parking spots or you can catch it at the back of the church. This trail cuts across the bottom of the Old Hillary Preserve - imagine the preserve is a wedge and the trail cuts across the point of the wedge. It ends on a residential street - Vistazo West, where we then hiked up the hill - linking to Lyford Dr. It's pretty steep, but eventually you get to another trailhead from Lyford. You may want to turn left up Sugar Loaf and then Right on Heathcliff Dr, but it was pretty steep and we decided to stay on Lyford, which also leads to a trialhead for Fishbits. Once on the trail head you climb to the top with the trail's clear hills and valleys ,and have amazing views of the bay, Angel Island and the Golden Gate and Richmond Bridges. If you take this to the end - you will be greeted by a "No Trespassing -Private Property," sign just outside a wire fence that has been cut open - clearly some time ago. We proceeded and there is another sign posted right at the lookout point for Angel Island. Taking this trail around - there are now houses on the left which are enclosed by chainlink fencing. At this point, you may want to go back on the main trail or if you proceed, the trail gets a bit more narrow and challenging - uneven, less groomed, some rocks, etc. but clearly more than a deer trail. It cuts across the mountain and then switches back towards the trail behind Old Hillary's Church. All Trails lists this a down and back trail and not a loop. We kept going and it did eventually loop back to the church. It was just short of 4 miles, steep, and took us 2.5 hours and I'm not in great shape. So there you have it!

Really enjoyed this trail. I went on a Tuesday and there wasn't many people on it which was nice…read more The views were beautiful!

I love hiking, no problem but when I first when with a photographer friend he couldn't handle the hike, so we had to turn around. Treat this as a hike first and for something easier to get in and out for photography there are many bunkers in the Headlands that are better suited for this. The hike is about 4 miles RT and uphill the whole way. It's not super steep but it's a constant incline. It took me a little more than an hour to get to the top. I thought it was quite beautiful with such a depth of field with views of the ocean, city, Tennessee Valley, Mount Tam, and the East Bay. Sounds of the ocean waves and ocean buoys were always in the distance, it felt very maritime. Tons of birds chirping and wildflowers as well. The headlands are rather cool and foggy for the majority of the time. I'd avoid this hike on a sunny 80-degree day with no clouds because there is no shade.

Well worth the hike, and I say this as someone who thinks 3 miles as impossible. You can hit the…read morebattery townsley and another small graffitied battery on the way up too. I went on a sunny day that turned very foggy and Misty at the end. BRING A JACKET it will be windy up there. The photos were amazing and it was nice to finally be in an urban feeling abandoned place again, the graffiti was pretty incredible and the views and wildlife on the way up are awesome. Lots of lizards and flowers. Definitely visit if you're into urbex. I'm so glad they let this be accessible instead of closing it off. It is truly the best part of this area besides the marine mammal center to me.

There's so much I still don't know and have yet to discover…read more After hiking at Hawk Hill and down to Battery Spencer the previous week, I quickly realized I've never been to Kirby Cove yet. So the following week on my day off, I returned to explore Kirby Cove. While walking down Kirby Cove Rd., I noticed there was a sign for Battery Wagner, which was only 0.3 miles away. I wanted to go to Kirby Cove first so I decided to explore this Battery Wagner on my way back up. A couple of hours later, I followed the trail that lead me to Battery Wagner. It's not on the main path so it's kinda tucked away in a secluded and hidden area. But my...this place is gorgeous. Eerie since I was the only one there, but the sweeping and panoramic views of Golden Gate Bridge and the city was mesmerizing. I explored the upper bunker/fortified observation room and I was in awe. I mean I've seen the view of Golden Gate Bridge on so many angles and I can never grow tired of it. But this was a completely different view altogether. Those military guys certainly know how to pick the best real estates and people would pay millions for this kind of view. So I had to dig deep and conduct some research on this particular battery and discovered that it's a reinforced concrete battery that held two (2) 5 inch M1897 guns. The battery was built during the Endicot Period as part of the coastal defense all along the west coast and construction started in 1899 and it was in operation from 1901 - 1917, so way before the bridge was built. It's named after 1st Lieutenant Orlando Wagner with the U.S. Engineers, who was mortally wounded during the U.S. Civil War. During World War I, large caliber coastal defense guns were ordered removed and were sent to arsenals for modification and mounting on mobile carriage, both railroad and wheeled and were thrust into service in Europe. The guns from Battery Wagner were dismounted and converted to wheeled carriages and made it's way to France on August 1918. After being put in service during World War I, the guns returned to the U.S. and were brought to Aberdeen Proving Ground on June 7, 1919. Battery Wagner is now part of the Golden Gate Recreation Area (GGNRA) administered by the National Park Service. So next time you're visiting Kirby Cove, take a detour to Battery Wagner for some adventure, exploration and great views. It's pretty secluded so you can chill here and maintain social distancing out in the open. #YelpChallenge2020 review No. 35

I came upon this spot walking on the wide trail from the more ballyhooed Battery Spencer down to hidden Kirby Cove. In the downward direction, it's quite noticeable because it's an odd sight from above on the trail, and you soon take a quick detour in what felt like a scene in "Apocalypse Now". Chances are pretty high that you'll be the only one there because it's a tad hazardous to climb on and around. If you are Golden Gate-obsessed, it provides another vantage point for your Instagram account as the views are quite nice. Now back to the trail... RELATED - Up in Marin?
