I wanted to add to my earlier review from --wow- ten years ago. Phil and his team remain the best. I have moved to south bay and I have a new mechanic down there who is also great. Phil's just too far away now, sadly. But this weekend I was in the city visiting family when my car burst a radiator hose. I had AAA tow the car to Phil's up in Marin. (it would have been $700 to tow it to the south bay!!) Bless him, he remembered me and my car. Even though it was after noon on a Friday, and the tow company didn't get the car to him til about 2:15, and they close at 3; he took a look at it, reassured me that it was ONLY the radiator hose and not something worse like a head gasket. Assured me that on Monday it would be fixed. What a relief not to have to worry over a longer holiday weekend. He knew we are farther away from home and wanted us to have the the peace of mind and knowledge so we could make decisions about how to proceed. Phil and team are just amazing. I had gone to Golden Gate Jeep several times for repairs and maintenance. I took my Jeep in because there was a significant leak on the passenger side coming from below the dashboard. I took picture etc. I only have the problem when it rains. Phil seem disinterested from the get go. He told me he would take care of it to the tune of over $2K - yikes. It needed to be done. Summer came and went and winter and the rain arrived. I placed a pot to catch water just in case. What do you know? The leak was still there. I also was having problems with my "check engine" light and the Jeep struggling to change gears. Phil call to tell me to pick up my Jeep. Wrote the check (over $3K) and hopped in the Jeep to drive off. ONLY, I couldn't get the Jeep to drive forward. Got out of the car and told him the issue remained. Abruptly, he told me to put the Jeep into a lower gear. I was befuddled. I asked about the leak, and he then informed my that he couldn't fix it. Then walked away without refunding my money. Been bringing my Jeep here for a couple years for minor repairs. Always seemed overpriced $584 to change a light bulb? $1000 for engine light repairs but Phil seemed like a decent guy and wanted to give him the benefit of doubt for the high cost of these repairs. The most recent repair was because there was coolant leaking all over the engine. He never called with the estimate, which ended up being charged $985. The worst part was he didn't filled any liquids in the obviously low coolant, brake fluid and wiper containers. Plus he took it upon himself to change the oil for $112 which I never asked for. I was pretty upset for numerous reasons 1. Never authorized the high cost of repair. The work was just done . 2. Almost EMPTY coolant, wiper and brake fluids. They were all obviously dangerously low. 3. Changed the oil without asking or needed. When I confronted Phil, he did refund the oil change but was unable to answer why the fluids weren't refilled and made excuses. Won't he back. Terrible service. read more

Fair, honest, patient, friendly. These guys are great. A different mechanic misdiagnosed my issue, charged me $1000 and I still had the problem. Then that mechanic re-diagnosed the issue and this time properly but quoted me $1800 more for the repair than what I ended up paying Golden Gate Jeep for the same repair. I was getting ripped off badly but Phil and his team got my Jeep back on the road at a fair price. Phil also kindly and patiently explained everything for me in a way I could understand and even saved the bad part causing my issue to show me why I was having problems. So they are moving! New shop is going to be in San Rafael. I just called about a transmission rebuild and Phil got back to me with the details and a ballpark estimate within 5 minutes. I will be taking my Jeep there for the work in the new year. My previous review from 2007 stands: The shop figured out the cost of repairs vs. the value of the car after the repair and recommend against it on the grounds that I would get a better value in spending the same amount of money on buying another car. I visited Phil's shop and he told me I had a blown gasket and it would cost $3672.28 to repair the vehicle. He also discouraged me from visiting a dealer as he would hate to see me get ripped off. I then took my Jeep to the dealer as it was under warranty and they said there was absolutely nothing wrong with the car and the head gasket absolutely did not blow. I had to pay for a tow truck & take time off work only to find out that nothing was wrong with the vehicle. I've also driven the car from San Francisco to LA to verify that it wasn't a mistake on the dealers end. To me this is nothing more than purposefully misleading and taking advantage of a young woman. If my Jeep wasn't under warranty, I would have likely taken his advice and paid over $3,500 out of pocket for unneeded repairs. Since then Phil has said that he stands by his assessment but you cannot misdiagnose a gasket being blown it either is or it isn't. I've reported him to the BBB and goal is really to ensure that no other customer or potential customer in San Francisco is taken advantage of by this shop. Honest - Fast - Helpful - Friendly I thought I had a failing starter just as I was about to drive 6 hours back home to Los Angeles. Phil ordered the part we thought we needed and even offered to fix my car the same day in order to get me back on the road when I needed. Upon inspection, there was just a disconnected wire. Although clearly he could have replaced my starter and charged me full price for it, Phil fixed the wire, replaced another bolt that he noticed was missing and got me safely back on the road in a couple of hours time and charged me nothing. I had been coming to Golden Gate Jeep for 10 years getting my Jeep Cherokees and a Grand Cherokee (yes I have had 3). I was happy with my service until my last interaction. I went to GGJ to get some engine noise reviewed. It sounded pretty bad. I asked the question "is it serviceable'? The answer was 'there is a thrown rod/blown engine' it is only good for parts. An offer of '$300' was made I then took the Jeep to another mechanic. It was determined to be an easy fix of a loose plate that connects to the engine. The jeep has been running fine since the fix. I kept the appointment even though the actual location (damn you apple maps!) is about a 30 minute drive for me because Phil had gone through the trouble of ordering the part I needed and I thought it was the right thing to do (and I needed the work done soon). After all was said and done, I will most likely make my next appointment here too. I called Phil and he told me that was not true and told me not to listen to those jokesters. I had been a loyal customer of GGJ for a couple years and had taken my 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee to Phil because the engine temp was showing as going through the roof when I'd drive it for more than a couple minutes, even though nothing seemed to be wrong with the car otherwise. Phil said I had a blown head gasket and that it wasn't worth fixing. He would buy the car from me for a couple hundred dollars, though, as he'd be able to sell the parts. Something seemed amiss, but I was heading out of town and Phil had threatened that I needed to make a decision as he wasn't going to hold my car over the weekend. I decided to trust Phil and sold it to him for $500 (I actually got a higher competing bid, but had already agreed to sell it to Phil, so I stood by my word). I talked to my uncle a few days later and he said, "That sounds like a thermostat issue". Dismayed, I took note of the VIN #. A few months later, I got a CARFAX report and what do you know!?!? Phil had done a smog check on my car a couple weeks prior. "Only good for parts", huh?!?! I filed a report with the Bureau for Automotive Repairs. They're completely incompetent and just visited the shop to inquire about my report. Shortly after, I received an angry call from Phil, who said that report wasn't going anywhere. I cited another review, which stated how Phil had erroneously told the customer his head gasket had blown as well, but for whom another mechanic was able to make the repair for only a couple hundred dollars vs. ~$4,000. Phil said that was a one-off and that he "took another look at my car and decided it was worth fixing after all". After seeing Brittany's review, my suspicions are confirmed that Phil is an extremely shady businessman who takes advantage of his customers by lying about the severity of the issues. In my case, he conned me into selling him a car worth ~$5,000 for $500. Don't go to GGJ. And if you do, ALWAYS get a 2nd opinion!! read more

Saw a bunch of 5 stars but didn't have the same experience. I took my 14 year old jeep in for an assessment. There are a couple of maintenance issues with my vehicle. Phil quoted me for 990 and told me that I should also get a full tune up for 880. It had a checkup 5000 miles ago & it didn't need any major work, but sure, I'm not a mechanic I don't know any better. I decided that my car wasn't worth fixing for that price. Went to pick my car up. Got charged 37$ for an oil change that I provided the oil for. I told him I thought that was a little bit high. He told me that I was "impossible to please" and that "he was already doing me a favor for using the oil that I supplied" ... "I really don't care what your opinion is" .. and to "have fun when your car breaks down on you".... It's possible that I need 2k worth of work on my car. 30$ of labor for an oil change isn't unheard of, but it is a little bit high. Realizing that I wasn't the easiest customer to deal with, I'll give Golden Gate Jeep the benefit of the doubt. I should/could have asked how much the oil change would be in advance, and finding the right mechanic can be a little bit harry at times. But paying money to have someone make some offensive remarks about you is not what I would have expected from a "5 star" place. --Update: Took the car to anther place. They ran a set of diagnostics a found that the "lazy O2 sensors" ran according to spec. Thanks Golden Gate Jeep for the dishonesty, and the attitude. NEVER GO TO THIS SHOP read more
