I have a 2022 Gladiator that I bought used and have had significant challenges with. I brought it to Phil, who listened and understood my situation and was able to not only fix the check engine light, but did it at a fraction of what a dealership would charge. He also provided quality communication and valuable advice on my next steps. Id highly recommend if you need a jeep specialist. read more

This garage is everything that a garage should be. They are honest and fast and they are great at explaining issues to people who know nothing about cars or engines. You can tell they are extremely knowledgeable with any age jeeps and give great guidance on next steps. I would highly recommend them to anyone! read more

Very trustworthy and friendly. I was super pleased with my service. I have already recommended this place to several friends.

The kind of independent garage I wish still existed in every community. I drive from San Ramon to Golden Gate Jeep to see Phil because he's fairly priced and he runs his shop with care, communication and a quality job done well. read more

Phil is great to work with and makes it right every time. He knows more than Google and gives straightforward pricing so you won't feel like you hired a newbie at attorney prices. Skip the dealerships, they are too far away anyway. read more

Strong recommend if you have a jeep and live in the Marin area. Fair prices and quick service.

Popped by this morning (without an appt) with my 2005 Jeep Liberty. The gentlemen who helped me was very kind. I just needed advice really quick. Took him 5 minutes to look at the Jeep. I offered to pay him but he said no. Who does that these day? I will take my Jeep(s) here if they need repairs.......Nice to have someone local! Driving to the Petaluma delearship is a pain! Also gave me confidence that every vehicle in the lot was a Jeep prodect! read more

Golden Gate Jeep - Liberty - Auto Repair Near Me - San Rafael, California

I read the reviews before writing this, Phil might be a good guy and mechanic, if you get his attention. I dropped my Jeep off for an evaluation and estimate for a week, came in and he hadn't done anything with it...instead started spouting off the same thing he did on the phone when I first talked to him. If you don't want the work, or are too busy, then tell people that from the beginning, don't waste my time. Will not be going back, Including the pic so he remembers who wrote this, Jerod read more

First time taking my Jeep to Golden Gate Jeep and will be coming back again. Phil changed my oil for my Wrangler 4xe and was super expedient and friendly. More importantly he didn't overcharge. I will return for any servicing that doesn't require me to go to dealerships. read more

I've worked with Phil (in both the city and now in San Rafael) for years and he's always honest, hard working, and gets the work done correctly. I'd highly recommend him for anyone looking for a reliable Jeep mechanic. read more

Bought my Jeep used and had a mechanical problem I couldn't figure out, took it to 2 other mechanics I knew first. Neither of them diagnosed it correctly. First phone conversation with GGJ they told me what they thought it was, got me in the next day, and fixed the problem. 100% happy. I don't write Yelp reviews, but this experience warranted it. read more

I wanted to add to my earlier review from --wow- ten years ago. Phil and his team remain the best. I have moved to south bay and I have a new mechanic down there who is also great. Phil's just too far away now, sadly. But this weekend I was in the city visiting family when my car burst a radiator hose. I had AAA tow the car to Phil's up in Marin. (it would have been $700 to tow it to the south bay!!) Bless him, he remembered me and my car. Even though it was after noon on a Friday, and the tow company didn't get the car to him til about 2:15, and they close at 3; he took a look at it, reassured me that it was ONLY the radiator hose and not something worse like a head gasket. Assured me that on Monday it would be fixed. What a relief not to have to worry over a longer holiday weekend. He knew we are farther away from home and wanted us to have the the peace of mind and knowledge so we could make decisions about how to proceed. Phil and team are just amazing. It's hard to find such great people who do great work. I feel lucky to have both mechanics. read more

Phil and his mechanics are incredible. They know jeeps inside and out. No BS, fast and amazing value. read more

I had gone to Golden Gate Jeep several times for repairs and maintenance. I took my Jeep in because there was a significant leak on the passenger side coming from below the dashboard. I took picture etc. I only have the problem when it rains. Phil seem disinterested from the get go. He told me he would take care of it to the tune of over $2K - yikes. It needed to be done. Summer came and went and winter and the rain arrived. I placed a pot to catch water just in case. What do you know? The leak was still there. I also was having problems with my "check engine" light and the Jeep struggling to change gears. Phil call to tell me to pick up my Jeep. Wrote the check (over $3K) and hopped in the Jeep to drive off. ONLY, I couldn't get the Jeep to drive forward. Got out of the car and told him the issue remained. Abruptly, he told me to put the Jeep into a lower gear. I was befuddled. I asked about the leak, and he then informed my that he couldn't fix it. Then walked away without refunding my money. I take my Jeep to AAMCO now. Shannon is honest and gives you 100% of his attention and time. read more

Fair, honest, patient, friendly. These guys are great. A different mechanic misdiagnosed my issue, charged me $1000 and I still had the problem. Then that mechanic re-diagnosed the issue and this time properly but quoted me $1800 more for the repair than what I ended up paying Golden Gate Jeep for the same repair. I was getting ripped off badly but Phil and his team got my Jeep back on the road at a fair price. Phil also kindly and patiently explained everything for me in a way I could understand and even saved the bad part causing my issue to show me why I was having problems. If you have a Jeep in Marin, this is the place to get it serviced. read more

Been bringing my Jeep here for a couple years for minor repairs. Always seemed overpriced $584 to change a light bulb? $1000 for engine light repairs but Phil seemed like a decent guy and wanted to give him the benefit of doubt for the high cost of these repairs. The most recent repair was because there was coolant leaking all over the engine. He never called with the estimate, which ended up being charged $985. The worst part was he didn't filled any liquids in the obviously low coolant, brake fluid and wiper containers. Plus he took it upon himself to change the oil for $112 which I never asked for. I was pretty upset for numerous reasons 1. Never authorized the high cost of repair. The work was just done . 2. Almost EMPTY coolant, wiper and brake fluids. They were all obviously dangerously low. 3. Changed the oil without asking or needed. When I confronted Phil, he did refund the oil change but was unable to answer why the fluids weren't refilled and made excuses. Won't he back. Terrible service. read more

I needed help with an Out Of State vehicle registration. Phil gave me great advice on what I needed to to do and where to go to do it (needed a visit to Novato DMV which was also 5 star!). VIN Verification was done without appointment and took 15 minutes. (I don't have a Jeep so I can' t comment on repairs but shop looked clean and well managed) read more

Golden Gate Jeep - Auto Repair Near Me - San Rafael, California

Phil & his team are great - friendly & honest. Bought my first Jeep Wrangler from Phil a couple of years ago and continue to have all major services, upgrades, modifications done by him. Would not take my Jeep anyplace else. Work is always performed at the highest quality and I have found that Phil stands by his work. Shortly after I took my Jeep off road it developed a particular issue. Took several visits to pinpoint the exact problem but I was only charged for the final fix. Phil was great given how many times I brought the TJ back in. read more

So they are moving! New shop is going to be in San Rafael. I just called about a transmission rebuild and Phil got back to me with the details and a ballpark estimate within 5 minutes. I will be taking my Jeep there for the work in the new year. My previous review from 2007 stands: The shop figured out the cost of repairs vs. the value of the car after the repair and recommend against it on the grounds that I would get a better value in spending the same amount of money on buying another car. Lots of places would have just let me spend more than what the car was worth. Refuses to do half-assed jobs. read more

I visited Phil's shop and he told me I had a blown gasket and it would cost $3672.28 to repair the vehicle. He also discouraged me from visiting a dealer as he would hate to see me get ripped off. I then took my Jeep to the dealer as it was under warranty and they said there was absolutely nothing wrong with the car and the head gasket absolutely did not blow. I had to pay for a tow truck & take time off work only to find out that nothing was wrong with the vehicle. I've also driven the car from San Francisco to LA to verify that it wasn't a mistake on the dealers end. To me this is nothing more than purposefully misleading and taking advantage of a young woman. If my Jeep wasn't under warranty, I would have likely taken his advice and paid over $3,500 out of pocket for unneeded repairs. Since then Phil has said that he stands by his assessment but you cannot misdiagnose a gasket being blown it either is or it isn't. I've reported him to the BBB and goal is really to ensure that no other customer or potential customer in San Francisco is taken advantage of by this shop. I've attached the quotes so you can see for yourself. read more

Wow Phil delivers the best customer service you can get. I drove out from Oakland to get a pre-purchase inspection and Phil himself looked everything over. Luckily nothing was wrong. Phil stuck around after the shop closed to talk to me about any concerns I had, including helping me decide whether to purchase the vehicle. It's clear he knows ever model and year extremely well. And then he didn't even charge me for the service!! I was blown away. I'll be going to GGJ for future repairs. If you're in SF or Oakland, GGJ is well worth the trip. read more

Phil and crew at Golden Gate Jeep are incredibly helpful, friendly, professional, and reliable. Phil put forth a lot of effort for my 2005 Jeep Wrangler with a bad PCM (and, it turns out, bad cam synchronizer) -- With lots of great communication along the way, my Jeep's back on the road and my wallet's only reasonably lighter. Thanks y'all! read more

Honest - Fast - Helpful - Friendly I thought I had a failing starter just as I was about to drive 6 hours back home to Los Angeles. Phil ordered the part we thought we needed and even offered to fix my car the same day in order to get me back on the road when I needed. Upon inspection, there was just a disconnected wire. Although clearly he could have replaced my starter and charged me full price for it, Phil fixed the wire, replaced another bolt that he noticed was missing and got me safely back on the road in a couple of hours time and charged me nothing. I am truly grateful to Phil and appreciate all his help. read more

An excellent experience! My 30 year old YJ was suffering from its age and needed a new clutch and other work. Phil was superb! He performed a detailed diagnostic and had all work back to me in a few days. My jeep now purrs and drives like it was new! I am so glad to find someone who loves jeeps, is an expert in working on them, and is trustworthy. Thank you, Phil!! read more

I had been coming to Golden Gate Jeep for 10 years getting my Jeep Cherokees and a Grand Cherokee (yes I have had 3). I was happy with my service until my last interaction. I went to GGJ to get some engine noise reviewed. It sounded pretty bad. I asked the question "is it serviceable'? The answer was 'there is a thrown rod/blown engine' it is only good for parts. An offer of '$300' was made I then took the Jeep to another mechanic. It was determined to be an easy fix of a loose plate that connects to the engine. The jeep has been running fine since the fix. This obvious ploy to buy my Jeep for $300 to turn it around for a quick sale was now obvious. ALWAYS GET A SECOND OPINION AND KNOW THESE GUYS ARE NOT BEYOND A SCAM read more

Good solid choice for my Jeep Grand Cherokee transmission repair. Same day repair was very helpful.

I initially called Golden Gate Jeep because I thought it was located near my place in San Francisco. Phil ordered the part I needed and told me to bring it by. I kept the appointment even though the actual location (damn you apple maps!) is about a 30 minute drive for me because Phil had gone through the trouble of ordering the part I needed and I thought it was the right thing to do (and I needed the work done soon). After all was said and done, I will most likely make my next appointment here too. Phil got all the work I needed done in a couple hours, was very communicative about the process and costs and then came in under the amount he initially quoted me. Nice to see a small business do it right. And Phil turned out to be friendly and straight forward. I have found my repair shop for the foreseeable future for all my Jeep needs! read more

This is pretty much the only place I take my Jeep and know I'll get an honest job done. Phil consistently goes above and beyond for his customers and stands behind his work. From small repairs to big ones he's done so in a timely manner and guarantees his work. While I'm selling my Jeep I'm just getting a different one to accommodate a family. Knows my Golden Gate Jeep will be able to service it gives me piece of mind and weighed into my decision. read more

Phil is the man and as honest as they come. Another shop, Toscalitos Auto, told me that at 30K miles, my Jeep warranty was null if I didn't do xyz work to it. I called Phil and he told me that was not true and told me not to listen to those jokesters. I later brought my jeep in to get my windshield fluid fixed and it was a simple 5 minute fix and didn't charge me for it. He has earned my business with his availability, jeep knowledge, and affordable rates. Thanks Golden Gate Jeep! read more

I recently purchased a Jeep Grand Cherokee from GG Jeep and was very satisfied with the entire process. I first called and spoke with Phil to ask him a few basic questions about the vehicle prior to making the trek out to look at it. He was very clear in communicating the vehicle history with me and once I arrived, I found the vehicle to be exactly as described. After a brief test drive around the city with one of the technicians we chose to purchase the Jeep. Phil was very fair with the transaction and I was pleasantly surprised when GG Jeep processed all DMV services and registration right on the spot!! :) Super happy with the Jeep and Phil's service!! read more

Saw a bunch of 5 stars but didn't have the same experience. I took my 14 year old jeep in for an assessment. There are a couple of maintenance issues with my vehicle. Phil quoted me for 990 and told me that I should also get a full tune up for 880. It had a checkup 5000 miles ago & it didn't need any major work, but sure, I'm not a mechanic I don't know any better. I decided that my car wasn't worth fixing for that price. Went to pick my car up. Got charged 37$ for an oil change that I provided the oil for. I told him I thought that was a little bit high. He told me that I was "impossible to please" and that "he was already doing me a favor for using the oil that I supplied" ... "I really don't care what your opinion is" .. and to "have fun when your car breaks down on you".... It's possible that I need 2k worth of work on my car. 30$ of labor for an oil change isn't unheard of, but it is a little bit high. Realizing that I wasn't the easiest customer to deal with, I'll give Golden Gate Jeep the benefit of the doubt. I should/could have asked how much the oil change would be in advance, and finding the right mechanic can be a little bit harry at times. But paying money to have someone make some offensive remarks about you is not what I would have expected from a "5 star" place. --Update: Took the car to anther place. They ran a set of diagnostics a found that the "lazy O2 sensors" ran according to spec. Thanks Golden Gate Jeep for the dishonesty, and the attitude. NEVER GO TO THIS SHOP read more

What can I say! These guys are the best. For a guy finding a good mechanic is like finding a trusted hair stylist for a woman. We look all over for that one guy/gal we trust and send all of our quad pods over to them. The gentlemen at Golden Gate Jeep have never let me down in my 7 years of sending my Jeep over to them. They have always been prompt, professional, honest, and fair. They have done most of my major and minr services as well as fixed an oil leak in the same day. They now have an auto detailing business which I can not wait to use. Especially since I just got hosed at the last place I tried in SOMA. I had been a loyal customer of GGJ for a couple years and had taken my 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee to Phil because the engine temp was showing as going through the roof when I'd drive it for more than a couple minutes, even though nothing seemed to be wrong with the car otherwise. Phil said I had a blown head gasket and that it wasn't worth fixing. He would buy the car from me for a couple hundred dollars, though, as he'd be able to sell the parts. Something seemed amiss, but I was heading out of town and Phil had threatened that I needed to make a decision as he wasn't going to hold my car over the weekend. I decided to trust Phil and sold it to him for $500 (I actually got a higher competing bid, but had already agreed to sell it to Phil, so I stood by my word). I talked to my uncle a few days later and he said, "That sounds like a thermostat issue". Dismayed, I took note of the VIN #. A few months later, I got a CARFAX report and what do you know!?!? Phil had done a smog check on my car a couple weeks prior. "Only good for parts", huh?!?! I filed a report with the Bureau for Automotive Repairs. They're completely incompetent and just visited the shop to inquire about my report. Shortly after, I received an angry call from Phil, who said that report wasn't going anywhere. I cited another review, which stated how Phil had erroneously told the customer his head gasket had blown as well, but for whom another mechanic was able to make the repair for only a couple hundred dollars vs. ~$4,000. Phil said that was a one-off and that he "took another look at my car and decided it was worth fixing after all". After seeing Brittany's review, my suspicions are confirmed that Phil is an extremely shady businessman who takes advantage of his customers by lying about the severity of the issues. In my case, he conned me into selling him a car worth ~$5,000 for $500. Don't go to GGJ. And if you do, ALWAYS get a 2nd opinion!! read more

Still, 11 years into the ownership of my Jeep Grand Cherokee, Phil and Golden Gate Jeep do impeccable work. I can't say enough good things. I'm a loyal customer when I find the right person to do the job, no matter what it is, and Phil has earned my praise in every way. Seriously, it's enough that I can't imagine him or Golden Gate Jeep not being my choice mechanic shop. I may have to own Jeeps for as long as they're around :-) Phil has built his business slowly and surely, no matter how many detours in trying to deliver a good product, and I think his business sense will keep him and Golden Gate Jeep successful. Honesty, what I consider fair pricing even when it hurts my pocketbook, a willingness to explain things to the customer, a CLEAN shop floor, and a good attitude from the staff are reasons to visit Golden Gate Jeep. Take your Jeep there and you'll see what I'm talking about. read more

So rude, called to ask about some services /repairs and they would not even let me explain what I needed. I need some work done on my jeep that is covered by my warranty, they did explain that I should just go to a dealer, however when the man told me they only work on these cars I got very excited as I have also been looking a good body shop to do these repairs. The man who answered would not even let me get my question out, he hung up on me just before telling me not to waste his time. :/ read more

Phil @ Golden Gate Jeep is my man! After moving up from LA, I was afraid that I wouldn't find the same level of service and satisfaction that I had received with my guy down there. So far, this still stands true because I've received better service/satisfaction from Phil! He brings years of hands on Jeep experience to your beloved road-machine. Not only can he spot potential problems and recite them to you over the phone like any Jeep-guru would, he will quote you on the spot. Phil does not give you the run around. He will tell you with a very open and friendly demeanor: 1)What is wrong with your car 2)What needs to be fixed 3)How long it would take (fast turn around) 4)How much will it cost (very fair) If he thinks your car is non-serviceable, he will tell you it would cost more to fix than to sell. Other shops would tell you that its still serviceable, just pay them the money to bandage it together to work for awhile. You won't be scared about bringing your car to his shop even though its located very near the scary void known as the 'Loin. His shop is very clean and devoid of clutter and junk cars you might have seen in other shops. Occasionally, Phil will surprise you with final costs less than his quotes do to bundling services together and saving on labor costs. Do keep in mind that he is the only Jeep-specialist in the SF area left and rightfully so. Phil is my Jeep-man. read more
