At the foothills of Tai Mo Shan is a restaurant that is a rarity in Hong Kong- it s a detached house with a free carpark out front! Golden Castle has been around for long enough to be an institution, it serves "western food" that has been adapted for local taste including favourites such as baked pork chop rice and baked escargot. The menu harks back to the days when locals did not have much choice in terms of "western food" (limited to those who had the cash for it anyways) and many local restaurateurs had to adapt their menus to appeal to the local population. That gave birth to a local stream of delicacies that are uniquely Hong Kong.
Back to the restaurant itself, it has both an indoor and outdoor patio- the outdoor section would be a nice place to sit back for tea and it will afford you a great view of the surrounding area. Be warned though- the service quality of this restaurant is not something to write home about and the general quality of food does seem to vary with the mood of the chef on the day.
Indeed, this restaurant may not be the last word in quality but the fact is this: this location is very unique and the style of food served is also something of a tradition. If you were having a day out in the Shek Kong/ Pat Heung area then I would certainly visit this place, as a reminder to the quieter days. read more
