I've got nothing wrong with the service and the politeness of the new people who run the Gold Coast subs but the way their food and subs taste lately has depressed me. I normally always get a roast beef heffer sub. They are known to have their own oils and taste great normally and two days before this I had actually had suburpia subs. And I know that those subs tasted awesome to me, but this time around I had bought three. Heffers I could tell that I had gotten less meat and there was barely any oil and the sandwich was mostly onions. No, I have no problem with onions, but that was a huge amount of onions and I know when I've been cheated out of meat normally they load it. I barely tasted the beef. Used to buy subs about once a week at the West Allis location. They closed so now its out to Greenfield. Nice and clean appearance. Every time I visit the price has increased. I like to mix it up, Suburbia vs Goldcoast. This last visit was it for me. Not worth the drive anymore. Sandwiches are good, maybe a little smaller. The thing that killed it for me.....extra OIL and extra onions. $1.00 EACH . C'mon man, a buck for some oil and a dollar for 10 cents worth of onions. NO WAY. While my Goldcoast sub was very tasty and the location is convenient to me, I still prefer Suburpia for many reasons. Suburpia has: 1) Better Hours-especially if you work during the day, closing at 7PM is a bit early. I have come there when they have decided to close early for family reasons...not cool, get someone to cover. 2) Better selection of Subs: I prefer the Corn Beef Sub that GoldCoast doesn't have. Yes, they Have Roast Beef but Suburpia has Both along with many other including hot subs. 3) Prices! The Pentagon Club is $9.20 compared to the WhiteHouse at Suburpia for $7.99 and Goldust $7.99 vs GoldCoast $7.49 (both ham subs). 4) Better Dine in experience: Suburpia has Fountain Soda available where GoldCoast has only cans/bottles available. While some people complain about the dressing being too salty, I have not had that problem, and the bread is always fresh. Give them both a try and decide for yourself! read more

You cannot beat the price. The sandwich had a "tougher" Italian bread that made the sub more durable to hold everything together. It was a "classic" sub, without all the extra fancy toppings and sauces other places have, served in a plastic bag. I liked how the onions and tomatoes tasted like they were marinated with the oil and seasoning. I personally would have like bread that was a little softer when biting into, but also understand because of the oil it's prepared with. The lady at the counter was pretty quiet. Didn't have much of an opinion about anything on the menu. The place had many people waiting in the dining room but the food was prepared quickly so everyone was in and out quickly. Gold Coast Subs are classic Milwaukee. They were started as an underdog story and today they are still an underdog story. You are guaranteed a delicious sandwich each and every time. These will easily become your favorite subs . However, you will always have one major problem every time you go to Gold Coast Subs... and that is trying to figure out which sub you want. But you can do what I do... I choose one and I stick to it because I don't want to face that problem. Pentagon club is the way to go lol. Hey Josh. I just read your response and do not feel the unprofessional comment is warranted what so ever. Never did your employee explain to me an up charge. It was only after she rang me up and told it was fine and then went in the back that then I was explained of this up charge. No sign that states no subsitutions. So I pay for my meal..... then am told I have to pay an additional amount with a pretty suspect reason. My suggestion would be to train your staff on how properly answer questions. I'm sure any other owner of a business would tell you to Train your employees to give your customers all the information. Not have them pay then tell them they owe more and then tell them they are unprofessional. Please look in the big picture if you want to be successful. read more

Much like my review, for what I'm assuming is one of their biggest competitors, Suburpia, I read about what awesome subs Goldcoast has on a Facebook group I'm part of. After trying Suburpia, I just HAD to drive down the street to hit up Goldcoast and try their roast beef sub. It was delicious!! Goldcoast definitely is the winner in the bread department. I didn't much care for the very few diced tomatoes I had. I love tomatoes so had I thought of it, I would have asked for extra had I known. Still a very good dandy and so glad I decided to try it. Best subs in Milwaukee. I grew up going to their old location on 27th across the street from Toys R Us. I love this location on Layton because it's so close to Mom's. The turkey gobbler is my favorite. One thing to know, in order not to make a mess, do not remove the sub from the bag! Hold it in the bag, peeling back the bag as you eat it. It's really the only way to eat a Goldcoast sub. The secret to these suns has got to be the special dressing they use. It's so good. The bread is also always fresh. This is my go to when I call my mom and tell her I'm coming over and she wants me to bring lunch or dinner. So affordable too. read more

The reason it took me forever to get to this Milwaukee classic is the menu, I'm a die hard Italian sub guy and they don't have anything even close. My first lunch plans of a Mediterranean type place fell through fast because the first was not open until 5pm when Yelp said 2pm and its 2 when I went, my second attempt was the Dera Pakistani Grill on Yelp, closed years ago and no one reported it to Yelp. Back to Yelp and see where else I can be directed to for a waste of time, I think Gold Coast is still open so off I was. Jack pot, the window has an open sign so I pulled in. The place had only two people in it so I'm wondering if it's any good but I'm here and I'm getting one, the Pentagon club sounded good until I realized it's a club with out bacon in it but I got it anyway. The place was like a restaurant in search of an identity with how it was decorated, it just screams super boring with the cheap tables/chairs etc. The lady was nice who helped me and my sandwich was ready in no time. When I pulled my sandwich from the brown paper bag I saw instantly that this is exactly like another sandwich place in town where it's a mess that you have to eat from the bag and sure enough there is a secret spice dusting also that I saw. Who is copying who here, I have no idea because I'm not a native Milwaukean. The sandwich didn't look bad with ham, turkey, mayo, oil, lettuce, tomato, onion, cheese, secret seasoning on a sesame seed bun. My first impression was the the nice smoked ham, soft fresh bread and the seasoning has a nice garlic taste which played well with all the other flavors. The tomato and onions were diced which I liked along with the cold meats and vegys on the fresh bread, this was a tasty sandwich. I drove 9 miles to try Gold Coast, as I have been somewhat disappointed with the Original Suburbia near my home on Bluemound. Big mistake. The "Gourmet" , Gold Coast's version of the Classic was disappointing. I swear, there was 1 slice each of thin bologna and salami folded over. Stuffed with alot of lettuce and the seasoned onion mixture. I ordered extra tomatoes, wasn't aware they are diced. For $1, I'm assuming they added about a teaspoon of tomatoes. Sandwich tasted good, but pretty bare bones. Will probably stick to Cousin's Italian..plenty of meat and extra toppings ( except meat) are free!! It took me awhile to find Goldcoast Subs, but am I ever glad I did. I definitely have a little bit of Christopher Columbus syndrome as I'm the one out of my group of friends that 'discovered' this place. And after introducing them to Goldcoast, I definitely love to take the credit of finding it. Especially because they all enjoy it as much as I do. Goldcoast Subs is this hole in the wall place on Layton Ave next to what I believe is a cowboy boot store? But once you go in, the brightness will burn your eyes -- but that's just the surface gold baby. Once you get to the counter and read the subs they have -- you're hungry. You want, no, need one. And there's so many good ones to choose from. My go-to sandwich is the 'Say Cheese', three different kinds of cheeses smothered in what I think is oil, mayo, spices, mustard and something else that's just too good. It's seriously heaven in a mouthful and I swear by this sandwich. 'Gold Dust' I believe is another great one, your standard ham sub with all the fixings one could ask for. This one also comes with the rich spices that the Say Cheese has and that's what makes Goldcoast such an awesome place. The flavor you taste can't and isn't replicated elsewhere. This one tops my list of favorite sub shops in Milwaukee. The space is simple, and kind of out dated, which is alright because it lends to the quirkinesses of the business. You'll find nothing "extra" or "fancy" in their cowboy/western themed dining area. My go-to order? The turkey sub, all the way. Everything about this sandwich just works. The meat is great, though I wish there was more of it. The oil and secret seasoning work together perfectly, and the bread is hearty and fresh. These subs are messy, but that's okay. Goldcoast serves them in a plastic bag, so as long leave the bag on while you're eating, you'll have no problems. Give it a shot. read more

I happened to be in the area for my job. I had brought a lunch from home, but was craving a a good sub. I waited at the counter and stood at the register for a a minute or 2.. A lady finally peaked her head out and said it would be at least 10 minutes and she was the only 1 working. I only have a 30 minute lunch with about 20 minutes left on it. I had to leave, I cant wait for what should be a quick order if the restaurant was properly staffed. I understand things happen, but I couldn't get the sub I wanted due to their issue. The subs are great but they don't follow their own posted hours. I get the hankering for one of their great sandwiches and I get in my car and drive over there because they're supposed to be open until 8:00pm. At 7:30, the lights are off, the door is locked, and the owner is stacking chairs. I know this business was up for sale earlier this year. Don't know if it has been sold, but sandwiches have not been the same my last two visits. Today I ordered a Gold Coast as I did last time. However I placed my order and I don't know if sandwiches are now premade, but the counter person took my order, walked in and walked out with sandwich already in the paper bag. If I could give it 10 stars I would! The subs are so good-- you'll never be able to eat cousins or subway again. The subs consist of whatever meat you choose, American cheese, mayo, lettuce, finely diced onion, & an oil blend which is out of this world- and makes a Gold Coast sub so special! Unfortunately, there are probably about a zillion calories in each sandwich. The subs are a bit higher on the price side ($5.99 for a 6inch), but your sub is well worth the price & extremely filling. I tried the GoldCoast and the ham was tender and the oil almost dropped down your arm. The experts keep it in the bag to eat it - learn from their wisdom. The service was pretty bad. Two people running the joint on a Saturday lunch? Oof and the person taking orders kept mixing up people's orders up - subs of one order with the sides of another. This Goldcoast is open on Sundays, has a parking lot, and more seating. The subs are amazing at any location, and I cannot recommend them enough.
