Since I changed the way I go home from work due to construction on my normal route, I've been passing by King Gyros every day. I ate here once years ago before I started using Yelp, so I decided to stop again and leave a review this time. My order consisted of a plain gyro and mozzarella sticks. The mozzarella sticks were good. The breading was Italian seasoned and noticeably different than most other breaded mozzarella sticks. I'm fairly certain they're Riverside Foods brand, which you can buy with a guest pass, or if you work for a restaurant, from Restaurant Depot just south of downtown for anyone else that likes them. Just as others have commented in their their reviews, the flavor and quality of the gyro meat is excellent, but it is a smaller gyro than pretty much every other restaurant I've had one from. I'd love to say that I'll rush back and can't wait to have it again because the taste was amazing, I just know I can get more bang for the buck on gyros elsewhere that aren't too far off flavor wise.

I've been going there pretty regularly for the last couple of weeks for lunch and everything I've had has been cooked perfectly. No frills, straightforward, diner food with simple flavors cooked right. Also, their kitchen and dining area are IMMACULATE. I was a little worried from the outside, but when you get inside the place is clean and kitchen is spotless with everything in sealed containers and labeled. The people working there are super nice and customer service has been good. My only complaint would be that the name is a bit misleading. The Gyro is good, but it's clearly purchased from a vendor and probably pre-sliced. Their real strength are all of the other diner classics like their patty melt. My lunch today. A turkey club. Simple, delicious, with everything cold that's supposed to be cold, hot that's supposed to be hot, and crunchy that's supposed to be crunchy. A nice serving of crinkly cut fries that are crisp on the outside with a pillowy potato center and a dash of seasoning salt. These folks deserve to be way busier than they are during lunch. You should give them a try.

This Gyro will rock you! They're the Gyro champions, my friends! They're a little bohemian, and will send you into rhapsody! Who wants to live forever without these Gyros!? Oh wait. No. All of that is not for King Gyros. It's for Queen Gyros. This is a cute little sleepy Gyro shop that looks like it's straight out of 1973. The Gyro was not bad and the service was really nice. It's really out of the way so it's unlikely that tourists to Milwaukee will ever have a reason to come up here, but if you happen to be driving by, it's a good spot to stop and get a gyro. In some cities I'd give it a 5 star, but the sky high standards of Milly Wore Kay Gyros (they were invented just down the road in Chicago) mean that 4 stars is closer to the truth. They have a lot of other good diner stuff on the menu as well, so you can explore for yourself. And if you're having an affair with the owner, it's Fling Gyros. If you crash a plane into this store it's Wing Gyros. And if you're an Englishmand in Milwaukee like me, it's Sting Gyros.

Now for my review of the gyro. The nice woman was working the counter again and helped me. The place looks relatively clean with lots of dark colors which makes you feel like your in a cave. The menu has everything from breakfast to fish frys for a gyro place so I ordered the gyro sandwich, see my pictures. After grabbing my gyro I noticed the bag was on the light side compared to other Milwaukee gyro places. When I opened the box I noticed that it is small compared all the other places I have had a gyro at. The gyro meat was flavorful and moist but sliced super thin for my liking. The pita was nicely toasted and hot. The onions and tomatoes were fresh. The sauce seemed fresh and not that watery frozen kind that some places give you. This is not your average Milwaukee gyro where you have to eat the meat off the top before you can fold it over, it fools over and nothing falls out right from the start. My final thoughts is that I agree with Shirl T. That for $7.75 which is the average price for a gyro around town it's the smallest and a poor value when compared to other places. If they don't sample the competition and see what the same amount of money gets you I fear they will not last long. I organize the Friday work lunch and we have two regular gyro places that the guys really like and I was hoping this place could get into the rotation because they are close but if I brought back what I got today compared to what all the other places serve I would hear it from everyone.

Salad that comes with the gyro dinner!

This place is a hidden gem! Look at this fresh salad and delicious gyro. We live down the way and couldn't enjoy this place more!

    Awesome gyro and fries!

This place is great! The gyro is outstanding and the fries are delicious. Everything is made fresh. The pricing is very reasonable. By far the best place around for lunch.

To order food, you do it through two wall kiosks which I like because you can look at options and not feel rushed unless there's a line. Outside they have tables and a tv as well. I choose a veggie sandwich which had a good kick to it! The smaller size was good enough for me. It was a bit confusing how to get your food, from what we understood, you have to go through a door to get to the kitchen window (bathrooms are that way too) but no one calls your order number or anything. I'd suggest an improvement on that way you know your food is ready or maybe we missed something. Overall, I would return and would like to try other items on the menu!

I ordered the lamb gyro plate with the french fries - and Gus said, you can get fries anywhere, try my rice! And so he served up the rice and asked me to try it right then and there. I asked for my feta on the side, and again he was insistent I try it then. The portions are gigantic - it was enough for at least 2 meals. We talked about his background in ethnic cooking. The place is large and clean; understated but inviting. Gus doted on us, bringing out some freshly fried tortilla chips for me to enjoy with the burrito and salsa. The seasoning on the chips was a nice touch. The burrito was humongous -- too big really, as we had no way to store it, but we're not going to ding a place for that, and if you can take home leftovers, it's two meals for the price of one. The croissant breakfast sandwich was good but the bacon was cooked to nearly dust on one end for some reason. I snapped it off and ate the rest. I asked for crispy but not great hash browns. They were crispy. Check. But also greasy and worse, cold. Not even hardly warm. When she came to check, she asked how things were and I said "Eh" and was about to let her know but she left. So I had to take them home which I explained when I asked someone else for a box (told her they had been served cold but she said nothing). As a note, reheated they were very greasy and not good. The Leanne's special with waffle and eggs and bacon was good. That bacon was cooked right. We also ordered the kids' chicken tenders with fries which were good (but we were overcharged for them which required us to point that out after the check came to get it fixed). Food: They have a large selection of breakfast pastries, including scones, cinnamon rolls, hand pies, and more. There are also some savory items, such as a rosemary biscuit. It was a tough choice, but when in doubt, I go for a scone, and they had a Maple Cinnamon one. I had it warmed up a bit, and it was delicious. These scones are not muffins in disguise, which means the texture is a bit drier and more crumbly--perfect alongside a hot beverage. For my drink, I ordered a London Fog Tea Latte. I was hoping to have it served in an actual ceramic mug, but those are only offered to customers who order drip coffee. That said, they made a very good London Fog, with a little extra lavender and plenty of foam. For my taste, it could have been a bit hotter. Service: Everyone who helped us was kind and helpful and gave us plenty of time to choose the perfect pastries. When ordering the London Fog, they explained how they make theirs and how they would add the extra lavender, which I appreciated. As mentioned above, they do not provide mugs for specialty drinks, using mugs instead to keep track of customers who have paid for bottomless drip coffee. I could bring my own mug from home, but I am not a fan of carrying around coffee shop essentials. Atmosphere: The building is nicely designed on the outside and sits on a corner with plenty of large windows that bring in natural light. It faces north, so you avoid the glaring morning sun. A menu board above clearly displays the breakfast and lunch offerings, making it easy for first time visitors. The breakfast burrito is build your own with a bunch of different options for meats, cheese, and veggies. I went with bacon, American cheese, and spinach and wasn't disappointed. The burrito was hefty and every one of the ingredients stood out. This is something I would definitely come back for. The three hash brown patties tasted as you'd expect and I appreciate that they weren't cold in the middle or bland. You can definitely notice the freshness in the soup. It was thick and used actual florets of broccoli, not just the stalks. Given the size of the burrito I had just eaten, though, I wish there was an option for a smaller portion of soup. The bowl was large and if you just plan on having that as a meal it's fine, but I would have preferred buying a cup as compared to a large bowl. Hopefully that's something they consider as a menu tweak. I'm not a big brownie person, but I enjoyed it. Like the burrito and the soup, it was a sizable portion, so worth the price if you're buying one. I'd be interested in trying their lemon bar or coffee cake on a future visit as those are more up my alley. I enjoyed talking to the woman who was prepping the dining area while I was there. Most of those spots only open for dinner, so I was thrilled to find that Bavette La Boucherie now serves lunch. My friend, a local, told me the restaurant originally began as a butcher shop. While that's no longer the case, the space still pays tribute to its roots -- shelves lined with kitchen knick-knacks, butcher-block counters, and a display of local provisions that hint at its past. Chef-owner Karen Bell leads the way here, and you can feel her touch throughout -- from the creative menu to the casual-elegant vibe. The décor blends exposed brick and warm wood with soft light and a friendly hum from the open kitchen. Our server, Matthew R., had only been with Bavette a couple of weeks, but his background in restaurant management showed. He was knowledgeable, attentive, and offered great suggestions. Before our sandwiches arrived, we shared a cup of pork and tomatillo pozole topped with cabbage slaw and a dollop of sour cream. It was piping hot, bright, and deeply flavorful -- the kind of starter that makes you stop talking for a minute just to enjoy the next spoonful. Having read rave reviews of the Korean steak au jus, I nearly ordered it, but Matthew suggested the roast-beef with cheddar since I'm not a big lunch eater. Excellent call. The sandwich was divine -- tender, flavorful beef layered with melted cheddar on a crisp, perfectly toasted roll. The beef-fat fries had great depth of flavor, though I'd love them even more if they were twice-cooked for that extra crunch. Being more of a gin or vodka drinker, I couldn't resist the Gin Old Fashioned on the cocktail list. It was delicious -- smooth, aromatic, and balanced enough that I happily ordered a second. Great food, warm service, and a welcoming atmosphere. Bavette La Boucherie is a gem I can't wait to revisit.
