Rented a car for less than 24 hours was charged an arm and a leg for the vehicle. Which I understand it was last minute and I desperately needed a car. They took advantage of this. After the rental I began receiving emails that there were damages to the vehicle that were not there at the time of pick up. Luckily I had a video showing the damage, although they still did not accept my video stating they needed jpg photos. Nonetheless I would just stay away completely. On Tuesday September 26 2023 we arrived at Lisbon airport and went to Goldcar to pick up our rental car. We rented the car through Edreams at time of the reservation like we did before and the reservation process went smoothly. As soon as we went to pick up the car the lady at the Goldcar customer desk started pressure us to take insurance from Goldcar even though we already had insurance through Edreams themselves. She continued to tell us if we went through Goldcar itself she could wave the deposit fee on the car. Of course, we weren't going to pay twice for insurance, but the aggressive approach was concerning. The car we got was a fiat 500 hybrid license plate AX-22-IU. Saturday morning September 30, 2023, we went and got gas. We filled it up with unleaded 95 of course because not only did they tell us when we got the car, it was stated on the key, and of course also on the gas cap itself. The day went on and we drove all around the coast. Sunday morning we got back in the car did some sightseeing and went to the beach. After being on the beach for a few hours we got back in the car to go to our apartment. As soon as we started the car 2 warning lights came on. One triangle in yellow as a warning and the other which indicated that the start stop system was unavailable. When we drove off, we noticed the car barely had any power. Fortunately, we were close to our apartment and able to get home. Right away I called the customer service number as shown on our rental agreement and the kind gentleman got a tow truck out to us and told us transport back to Lisbon airport would be on its way. 1 hour later the tow truck driver John showed up. He thought he just had to boost the car because the battery was dead. We told him what was really going on and he checked the car himself. The warning lights came on again and he also noticed there was very little power. He got on the phone with someone at Goldcar then asked us if we got the wrong gas. We confirmed we did not. He went to the gas cap smelled it and confirmed with the person on the phone it was indeed gasoline. He proceeded to tell us he would take the car but that we had to call Goldcar to arrange pickup. After what has now been 1,5 hours we were surprised to hear this but okay we called Goldcar again. The gentleman at customer service apologized for his colleague that had promised transport and informed us we must get a taxi ourselves, pay for it ourselves and then Goldcar would reimburse this. We finally got in the taxi over 2 hours after contacting Goldcar and were on our way to the airport for what we thought a replacement car pick-up. To our surprise upon arrival at the desk the lady proceeds to tell us if we put in the wrong fuel, this would be our fault and we would have to pay. We again tell the story and that no we did not put in the wrong fuel and if this was the case the car wouldn't have driven past the day before. Then she proceeded to tell us we would need to pay another 1200 euro deposit and all the other fees to get a new car. We of course decline as we had already paid 1500 euros and were not willing to pay that again when it is clearly a mechanical error with the car and by no means anything we have control over. Without a car we ended up taking a taxi back to our home. We are obviously very disappointed with this whole story. This the worst customer service we have experienced at any car rental company ever. For your staff to promise transportation back to your desk and then never deliver is unprofessional. To deny a replacement car under the same contract while your initial car was defect is unacceptable. For your staff to assume we did something wrong, without any evidence that we did, is completely unacceptable. We demand that we get a replacement car immediately under the existing contract, without any extra deposit. Furthermore, we demand that the taxi costs back and forth to your company and again to your company to pick up the replacement, in total 240 Euros will be deducted from the rental fee. To avoid further legal action, we expect to have this all arranged today so we can enjoy what is left of our vacation, a vacation that is already seriously impacted by your terrible customer service. I had a miserable experience with Goldcar Faro. First coming to the counter at Faro was an interesting experience. First they tried to get me to upgrade the car - at a cost of course. I declined. They then asked what would I pay for an upgrade - I gave them a lowball number. They accepted that and said they just found a car they did not know they had. I had an upgraded car. They then tried to force insurance on me. The big issue is that they found a socalled damage on the bumper that they said was not there. That was not possible. I had the car in my possession the whole time and where they are saying they found damage was not possible. But I have read too many revies that says that this is not unusual. I felt hosed by the whole experience. I could not use them again. read more

This company has to be the biggest car rental scam I have ever seen, and I have rented vehicles for over 20 years. When you pick-up its in such a low light area that I needed to use my phone flashlight to inspect which makes finding previous damage very difficult. Now of course when you drop off its very well lit helping their inspectors find the smallest defect in which they will try to charge you, which seems like it is done on purpose. The main issue I ran into is a small crack on the windshield that they said I was responsible for. When they sent me the invoice it states unless I disputed than I would be charged. I did dispute but they went ahead and charged anyway. The reason I disputed the crack on the windshield is that their own documents say that there won't charge for defects on glass less than 20mm. I requested proof of the defect was over 20mm with measurments but they refused to provide and still charged which seems extremely fraudulent. I also asked for the defects to be itemized on the invoice and what the charges were for each, which is required for submitting to my insurance coverage, and they also refused. Be careful of renting from them and if you do, I would suggest you require them to move the vehicle to an area with good lighting, do a full 360 video outside and in and make sure any findings you have the attendant record it right there and have them sign. I have read reviews on many websites that seem to suggest this is their normal business practice to offer cheap rates, set up the environment to make it difficult for you to properly inspect and to charge you for defects even if they might have been there before. read more

I made the mistake of booking a car with HolidayCars.com They gave a good quote on their website ($200), but when I got to Madrid, their provider (GoldCar) weaseled out of the deal. They refused to provide the car that was fully pre-paid for a week unless I added another $400. The excuse they used was the flight was late so they canceled the order. I had an amazing experience with Gold Car at Lisbon airport. Flavio was a great with detail and information. I left my documents there and he was nice enough to Secure them when I was able to retrieve it a week later. Like most car rentals there are small hidden fees. Do you have a choice to either put a credit card down with a hold of €1300 or pay about €350 in insurance. You are also able to add additional things such as Via Verde (which is their ezpass) Internet device, GPS, and children car seats, i'll add additional cost. Then we we returned the car, they went back to their office and came back with the keys and showed how the key wouldn't open the lock (which we had never tried to do since it has keyless entry). We reserved a 9 seat passenger van on Travelocity. When we arrived, they said Travelocity sent them a request for a midsize SUV. When we showed them our reservation details, they would not honor it. They had the size can we reserved on the lot, but said it was reserved by other clients and they couldn't give it to us. All they could offer was to talk with Travelocity so we could get a refund and that they didn't have any vehicles that could fit our family of 6 available at any point during our two week reservation. Charged me 950 euros for scratches that were already on the car when I collected it. good thing I asked for a copy of the check-out paperwork, make sure you get one because this is just messed up. very disappointing. Update - so GoldCar dispute team have offered to reduce 400 euros from the 950 euros initially charged and the reason being is that they need this to cover the damages I apparently caused. The only problem here is that I have a copy off the check-out paper provided on the day I hired the car showing those exact damages, proving they were already there. This did not happen until a week later after which we had returned to the US. They fabricated that we had used the wrong fuel in the car (we did not) and charged us for the tow, the fuel that was replaced in the engine, and the repair - 443 euros on a falsified charge. We were left stranded for several hours after our car broke down two hours into our drive from Porto to Lisbon, Portugal. It took me several attempts to get anyone to assist me. They finally towed the vehicle and held us responsible for finding transportation to our destination. After speaking with customer service, I was told to then go to the Lisbon airport to pick up another vehicle. When I arrived at the airport I was told that it would be a 45 min wait because they did not have any Spanish vehicles on site and were not aware of the situation. No one wanted to take responsibility, saying it was not their fault because the vehicle was a Spanish car to be returned in Barcelona. They're all owned by the same company so I'm not sure how no one can take responsibility and nothing was documented on their end. read more

I've rented a car for 3 days with this company, for 46€. When I arrived to the desk, I noticed while waiting almost for 1 hour queuing, that other customers were having some arguments with the desk staff. By the time I got my turn, I had my self an argument with this company, as they will rip you off as soon as they open their mouth. Right way they charge me 121€ for a full tank of fuel that I didn't ask. Then they try to force to rent the "tolls device / via verde", and after that they force you to buy the full insurance unless you have a VISA with 2000€ available, and have to be in your name, as they refuse my wife's VISA on the spot! When I returned the car, I returned it with a full tank, and they only refunded me 85€ from the 121€ I've paid??? Meaning, that I did rent a car for 3 days for 46€, and end up paying 141€ (59€ of insurance + 36€ fuel administrative fee + 46€ car rental). This company it's a JOKE! They don't even deserve 1 star. If I could I would give zero. This company is a pure scam. They are so dishonest. While in Portugal, we rented a car from them and after a few days of returning the car, I saw on my credit car statement an amount of €1000 euros from Goldcar. I called them to find out what had happened, and they simply told me they charged that amount because of car damage (on the back of the car). I took pictures of the car on the day I rented it but I was stupid enough and didn't take pictures upon returning it. I was at the airport, I was in a hurry and failed on that. For my disgrace, I don't have how to prove the car was in perfect conditions but at the same time they didn't have any proofs of a damaged car sent to me, even though I requested them. Overall, it's obvious to me that this company is a scam and no wonder why renting from them is so cheap at first, but once they have your credit card information they will rip you off! I am contacting an attorney to claim my rights now. And I forgot to mention that this is the second time it happens to me. First time I promised myself never to rent from them again, but they are so misleading that they have other names as well such as Rhodium, which was the company I used on the second time not knowing it was Goldcar. STAY AWAY!!!! Our miserable and draining experience was at the Lisbon, Portugal airport. I'm kicking myself for not reading up on Yelp first. It is a rental car service, how bad could it be! BAD! Our experience was similar to the other posted reviews. A great deal on the Internet and a horrific experience at the airport. We arrived at 10am & after a two hour wait just to speak with a representative and then learning about several deceiving extras not mentioned in the reservation we left and rented from Avis. After all the required extras imposed by Goldcar, Avis was less expensive. I understand countries have different rules and policies, but we were surprised by what we were told by Goldcar regarding debit/Visa cards. If our Visa is also a debit they cannot put a hold on the card to cover the 2,000 euro deductible for refusing insurance as it is against the law. It could only be done with a Visa or MC only card. They do not take Amex. So we were going to be required to take the extra coverage so a hold would not be put on the card. I never heard of that, but will check when we get home. Also, if you request a regular gas car to avoid the 2 Euro per day charge for a diesel car, don't count on it. Goldcar, we were told by the representative, does not offer any regular gas cars, they don't own any at the Lisbon, Portugal airport. I could go on with the unbelievable surprises we encountered. I hope if you read this and the other reviews you do not take a chance with this business as it will start your visit off frustrated and in the end not satisfied with the result. 57 euro for three days turned into over 200 euros plus a 87 euro charge for prepaid gas upfront. When I enquired why this was, I was told 'tyre damage'. The only way to even query this was to use a Gold car online form. After there weeks they sent me a photo of the front of the car and a separate photo of a damaged tyre. When I told them no such damage had occurred they ignored my email. I then talked to my credit card company and asked for a charge back. This is what you should do if you ever have the misfortune to be scammed by this company.
