Avis Car Rental. Do your homework before you pickup car at airport…read more Arrived at the airport only a few minutes wait and chose Avis as the office was in the airport itself.. Very friendly staff at both pickup and drop off. We paid £48 for 4 days hire thru British Airways. Of course, when you get to the airport, they try and sell you all the extra's but it was not a hard sell. I already expected this and politely declined. If you need a child booster cushion only, best to take one with you otherwise it is around 10 euro's per day. Just a word of warning when considering insurance. I am a very experienced driver, driving both coaches and buses in Europe. The driving in Lisbon is very chaotic and busy. The driving standards are not like in the UK. If you are not used to driving on the left hand side of the road, I would advise you to take out insurance before you go as it will be cheaper. We then went to the car park to pick up the car. VERY IMPORTANT. Check the car thoroughly. There was a lot of minor damage not listed on the sheet you have to sign. Luckily, I know what to look out for so made sure all the damage was properly listed on the document you sign. They are not looking to stitch you up, but spend a few extra minutes doing a proper inspection of your car as it will save you time (and money) later. In conclusion, would recommend but make sure to follow the points I have raised. You will be glad you did.

When we walked over to pick up the car it was wedged between two pillars. We had to enter the back seat and pull the car totally out of the stall for us to get in and load our luggage. There was no one there to assist in anyway. The pick up spot was way to dark to take pictures of the vehicle. When we returned the vehicle it was chaotic to say the least. The people directing us didn't ask which car rental place so we had to circle the airport. Once we were there they took photos of the car. (Amazingly the lights were very bright as opposed to the dark pickup area). They found some light scratches smaller than a pen tip (which we believe were already there) What should have cost us less than $200 ended up costing us over $1,200. This was the worst experience we ever had with any car rentals! Big rip off. I will never use them or recommend them ever again.

Upon arriving, there were about 20 people waiting and one clerk working. We put our reservation number into the waiting que machine and it couldn't find the reservation. Tried twice more, wouldn't take it. We were told to take a ticket representing we didn't have a reservation. Waited an hour, then called the 800 number. They said to try the number again, it was valid. Put the number in the machine, the reservation was found and we got a valid waiting ticket. Even though we were issued a ticket at 10:00am, they wouldn't honor it. In total, we waited about 2.5 hours & missed the tour we were driving to, which had non-refundable tickets.

That said, the Leiria location completely changed my opinion. The staff there were PHENOMENAL! Not only were they friendly and patient, they were genuinely helpful. I needed to extend my rental, and every employee took the time to walk me through the process and made sure everything was handled. They clearly explained my rental, insurance coverage, and all of my options. If the Leiria branch had its own Yelp page, it would easily earn five stars from me. They turned my experience around.

For Emerald Club members, you will have to hunt around for instructions - which says proceed outside to 2nd floor at Enterprise cabin. We walked upstairs, and outside around the airport. After half an hour, we realize that it was located on the 2nd floor in the rental car parking lot. Such an extensive headache for a service that should have taken the most 15 minutes in the US. We got our car an hour and 10 minutes after getting our luggage.

First, they tried to get us to upgrade and when we declined, they upgraded us anyway. The BMW required both hands and a hard push in order to shift into reverse, and it was very, very low to the ground. Upon return, an employee checked the car, finding no damage. Then the counter person came out and was on her hands and knees, crawling around the car in search of damage. She found a thumbnail scratch on a hubcap, and charged us 227 Euros! We are contesting this charge with our credit card. The investigator has yet to receive any information from Dollar, probably because they cannot show that the scratch repair cost 227 Euros. In the meantime, Dollar added a $20 charge from Madrid, and $3.50 from Oklahoma! There is no explanation whatsoever as to what they are for, and these charges are a mystery. We feel very ripped off, and advise people to stay away from the Lisbon Airport Dollar/Hertz company.
