So my biggest complaint about my neighborhood was the lack of a solid bodega. There is truly nothing better than that local store who knows exactly what you want when you pop in at 2 pm or 2am. By now I was thoroughly convinced that there was nothing like this by me though, it has been a while after all. Well it turns out that I take the same way home from the subway every time, and if I had only turned in one block sooner I would have been in blissful sandwich land from day one (as opposed to day 751). That mistake was rectified on the 4th of July thanks to some kids with some loud fireworks. I mean, who doesn't want to see teenagers blow themselves up..er I mean, wow us with pyrotechnics? Walking towards what I assumed to be a kids last day on earth, I was stunned to find what appeared to be a shiny, clean bodega. Even in my semi (ok very) buzzed state, I made a mental note to come back here, if only to see if I were hallucinating. I was not, turns out there was an amazingly normal bodega not that far from my place the whole time. The staff is super nice, the sandwich on point both in preparation and in price. Seriously, so happy I found this place it absolutely makes me feel more at home to have a local bodega. If you live in the area (especially if you're over by the park like us, aka "no food land"), check this spot out, I'm guessing you'll be as happy as I was to find it*. ________________________ *Assuming that a friendly bodega owners and greasy sandwiches make you happy, but to be honest, if they don't we can't be friends.

She provided some good suggestions. I was hungry and wanted items from both menus! We finally ordered the croquettes to start. I am not drinking adult beverages right now so I passed on that offer and settled for hot ginger tea. I decided on the Benny with salmon & my son ordered the steak & challah French toast to share. The croquettes were out pretty quick but the rest took a little while. The rest of the food came out hot and was delicious. I checked the inside of the restroom out when I finished eating and it's cozy and giving romantic vibes. Enjoyed the experience and will absolutely return. Heads up: The only breakfast meat offered is pork bacon.

I'm not entirely sure if it was an off day or something, but the entire restaurant smelled really stinky (and yes, I checked my shoes for any mudcakes once I sat down). I ordered 6 oysters during happy hour ($1.75 each) because I was so taken aback and jarred from the smell. The 6 oysters were good- a little unfresh but still good and at the level I would expect for happy hour oysters. Came with the standard fare. However, my lemon was a little bit pink, which threw me off as well. Service was good. Prompt and fast. Server was kind.

The arroz con gandules was a solid, well-seasoned base for the meal and came in a generous portion. We also grabbed a couple of pastelillos. The pastelillos con carne and the pastelillo con queso both had a great crunch and were packed with filling. The alcapurria was fried well with a solid exterior, and the inside was full of seasoned meat. To finish it off, we had the bacalaitos, which were huge, savory codfish fritters with crispy edges. It gets hot inside and you will have to wait, but the efficient service and excellent food make it a strong 4 star spot.

The prices are very reasonable and the taste of the food was pretty decent. However, the attraction was lacking. Coca drink: The coconut beverage was cool and refreshing. It was definitely the next best thing to slurping from an actual coconut. Alcapurria: The Alcapurria had equal ratio of meat and fritter filling. Pasteles En Hoja: I have to admit that the artistic look of this meal was not eye catching. The pasteles reminded me of vomit, but tasted like a tamale. Blood Sausage: The blood sausage has a physical resemblance of feces. Identifying one of the meats as "blood" is not the best idea. In the end, it was a sausage link. Surprisingly, all the dishes still tasted decent. Whenever I come across plates that don't look attractive I'll always keep an open mind and will definitely try everything. #alcapurria #pasteles #bloodsausage #cuchifritos #cocodrink
