My brother worked for Harkins back in high school and I got into a lot of free movies back then. I saw all the big blockbuster movies back in the 1990s at the old Cine Capri in Phoenix and the Camelview 5 in Scottsdale. I am all about the movie experience, especially movies that have a lot of action and special effects. I still enjoy dinner and a movie date nights. This Harkins location is in North Scottsdale right off the 101 and has plenty of parking and restaurants all around. I was recently in the area and caught the latest "Superman" movie in the CINÉ XL theater. Harkins Theatres Scottsdale 101 14 has 14 screens and all the updated stuff like stadium seating and electronic reclining seats. The CINÉBAR has a variety of wines and rotating craft beers. Food can be ordered ahead of time on the Harkins mobile app. A Cine Capri-style auditorium was built at Scottsdale 101 in 2003. It is called CINÉ XL and has an extra large screen, a gold curtain that opens up before the movie begins and Dolby Atmos sound with a 4K laser projection. There is also a small Cine Capri museum here with pictures of the old theater in Phoenix. I like going to Harkins Theatres because they offer the best deals for a regular movie goer like myself. I'm part of the My Harkins Awards program where you get discounts after so many visits. They have an annual Popcorn Perks program where you can get 36 medium popcorns for a year for $40 (one popcorn per visit). I also purchase the loyalty cup and get my $3 refillable drink at each show. I save on admission price by seeing most of my movies during matinee hours. Going to the movies doesn't have to be expensive if you look for the deals. Sometimes the concession lines can be long at Harkins. A lot of young folks work at Harkins and can be a little slow at times. Plus certain people bog up the lines because they order way too much food and snacks for a two hour movie. But I still enjoy my movie experience and what Harkins Theatres has to offer.

It's an older theatre made evident by the chairs and size of each theatre (or maybe it's because the movies I see are shown in the smaller ones). However, I love coming here and supporting these filmmakers and seeing wonderful movies. It's also close to home so that's always convenient. The staff is friendly and I prefer buying tickets in person because you save on the service fee that's tacked on when you buy online. I also had two free tickets so that helped cut down on costs. You can also join their rewards program for free and get points when you buy tickets and concession items. I don't love reserving seats in advance, I miss the days where you had to come early and search for seats. It was kinda fun in a way. Overall, I'll keep coming here as long as they keep showing smaller films.

I've only had this happen once before at another theater in fashion square and they have everyone a voucher for a free pop-corn. Nothing from this place. The popcorn is also super salty. UPDATE: Now 1 Star. Went to see 'Weapons' and similar to another reviewer here, the audio was extremely low. Could hardly hear anything including dialogue. Never had that experience before. The projection itself was also very dark like the projector lens was dirty. There were some horizontal white lines running across the screen for the entire movie which also made for a terrible experience. All in all, a terrible place to see a movie. You're better off going elsewhere or staying home.

When we got to the ticket counter, they said the movie had been moved to a larger theater because of higher than expected demand, and our seat numbers were changed. I was in "pre-irked" mode, because I had ordered early, and selected specific seats. I was happy to see that they were essentially the same center seats but in a wider row. The seats were comfy, as advertised. After the pleasant non-concern about the seats, I left to go to the concession. However, something about the carpet and the rail made me think that there was an extra step to take, and I tumbled a bit. I had to do the embarrassing "I'm okay, just tripped on my own feet" thing to the audience above. That did not deter me from getting a beer though (yes, my first and only one of the day, I really thought there was a step). However, the taps had just been opened and needed clearing. I think we were the first showing of the day. It gave me plenty of time to talk story with the very young (19 I think) bartender. As any good bartender should, he listened to my woes of being vegan on Thanksgiving. I give thanks for the Landmark Theatre showing a limited engagement film on a holiday! But put some better reflective tape on the steps or something, please!

AMC is our go-to movie theater and we honestly prefer it over the nearby Harkins…read more One of the things our family loves most is the self-serve drink station. My daughter is very particular about having light ice, so being able to make her own drink is a big win. The same goes for the slushies, our son loves mixing flavors and creating his own combo. The variety of soda and flavor options is great, and for adults, it's nice that there's also a bar available if you want to grab a drink. We recently rented a private theater for my son's birthday, and overall it was such a fun experience. He brought 15 friends to see the new Mario movie, and the staff really helped make it great. Annie, who checked us in was fantastic, she even let me store our cupcakes behind the ticket counter so they wouldn't melt in the car, which I really appreciated. We enjoyed those after the movie outside in the courtyard. We arrived early to order snack packs for the kids, and everything was so well organized. Each pack had popcorn, candy, and slushy cups ready to go. One of the employees (wearing a Luigi hat) went above and beyond. He had everything loaded on a cart, brought it into the theater, and helped pass out everything to the kids. It made the whole process so easy. I wish I remembered his name because he was great. The only hiccup we experienced was with the movie timing. When booking the private theater, it showed a 1:00 PM start time with about 25 minutes of previews. However, once we were seated, the movie started about 10 minutes early with no previews at all. We had a few kids arriving later, expecting to make it during previews, so this threw off our timing a bit. The staff did try to fix it by stopping and restarting the movie, but ultimately there were still no previews. It would be helpful if that detail was clarified during booking so parents can plan accordingly. Even with that small issue, the kids had a great time, and the staff was very helpful. AMC will definitely continue to be our go-to theater.

Definitely won't be returning to this theater…read more I chose this theater because of its location and the IMAX theater option. When I entered the theater and walked up the steps there were no row letters to know which row my seat was in. I had to ask another customer to make sure I was in the right row. According to another customer the row desigations are on the other side of the theater. The theater still has the old style seats that dont reclined, the seats are very worn and show their age and there is very little legroom. The theater was very direct with food on the floor. The sound was so loud during the 25 minutes of previews that I wish I had had ear plugs. Luckily the sound volume was appropriate for the feature film. I expected a lot more for my ~$23 ticket. I saw the same movie the week before but at a theater that showed it in Cine XL and the senior ticket was less than $19, the seats reclined and even with seats reclined there was plenty of room for people to walk by. This is just one experience. Others may have a different experience in a different auditorium.
