We setup to have a class wherein we each made a drinking glass. Having never done anything of this sort before, we were all excited and a little anxious about the experience. We needn't have been so. Michael was kind and welcoming. He was informative and answered any questions we had. As I watched him work with the others in our group, I was increasingly struck by the way he combined his kindness, reassurance, and experience with an attentive presence that made sure no unnecessary risks were taken. It was surreal to work with such an informative and humble artist, while being aware that, although we were working hard to maintain all the steps and safety precautions in play, he was attuned to customer safety at all times. This experience was fun, inspirational, and really left us feeling confident and lighthearted to have encountered a new form of artistic expression without feeling that our questions, concerns, or safety had been compromised in any way. It feels historic in the best way, like it's lived a few lives (old house shoe repair shop now a coffee spot that somehow makes you want to slow down and stay awhile). We didn't try any food this time, but based on the long line of people happily waiting for it, I'm taking that as a strong sign. The coffee, though? Legit. You can tell the beans are fresh, smooth, clean, and more "grown-up, sophisticated coffee flavor" than sugary coffee dessert. We ordered an iced caramel latte and an espresso martini (hold the cream) and both were excellent. The latte was balanced and smooth, and the espresso actually came through (not hidden under caramel). The espresso martini was the surprise star: they add an orange liqueur that gives it a little citrus lift, which makes it taste brighter and more interesting than the standard version. Naturally, we left with a bag of their espresso beans because now we're convinced we can recreate that martini at home. Will it be as good as Frothy Monkey's? Probably not. But we're going to try... you know, for science. If you like places with personality, history, and coffee that tastes like someone actually cares, this one's top of the list.
