Glass Monkey NYE edition!! This place has been on the list of places to try for a while, so when we saw their New Years set menu we decided to give it a shot 110/person including tax and tip for 4 courses is actually pretty reasonable nowadays and there were multiple options for the appy's, mains, and desserts which is always nice. Started with an array of canapés; to be fair I am NOT a fan of canapés and these ones did little to dissuade me from this opinion. It's just not appealing to me at all but the fiancée thought they were pretty good so we'll go with that. Followed up with Red Shrimp and carpaccio for our appetizers...(both on their regular menu) the Shrimp were delicious and huuuge! Excellent garlic white wine sauce and plenty of crusty bread to soak up the goodness. The carpaccio left a lot to be desired imo, pretty bland...salt would've gone a long way on this one. Mains were awesome! I had the Moroccan inspired braised lamb shank which was an absolute delight! Light fluffy couscous and some mixed veg accompanied it very nicely. Lamb was perfect, not too gamey which is always a let down with any lamb dish. I loved it. She had a sous vide duck breast which was equally delightful, some one the best duck we'd ever had. Potatoes and veg were a bit of a throw in presentation wise but tasty nonetheless. Desserts...omg! Both to die for!! Chocolate mousse cake was decadent, luscious, rich and perfectly pleasing...the cherry cheesecake was equally amazing. Perfect end to the meal Service and the overall experience in a modern gastro pub environment was really nice. Didn't break the bank at the end of the night either. Will definitely be heading back sooner than later Cheers Andy

I've been curious about The Glass Monkey for quite some time because it's probably the closest fancy-ish restaurant to my house. You'll find them in a strip mall (albeit a very good strip mall) in Lendrum Place and I couldn't help but think that it's a bit of an interesting location for a restaurant like this. Maybe it's because the restaurant is pretty removed from all of the major commerce areas and truly feels like a hidden neighbourhood joint. This actually makes The Glass Monkey feel even more special. The Edmonton Journal gave them a pretty big award as the Best Overall Restaurant 2022 and I was very excited to find out what they're all about on a Saturday evening. The outside doesn't look like much (although there's plenty of parking) but once you notice the enclosed patio with string lights hanging from above, you can easily imagine a hot summer night out there with a delicious drink in hand. And because they're located in such a residential area, I'm sure that many patrons are within walking distance. Inside, I was met with an upscale but comfortable space, an ideal combination of modern yet unpretentious. There's a long curving bar, large and interesting art pieces on the walls, and a general ease in the atmosphere. It wasn't long before every single table was occupied - clearly this restaurant is no secret and a reservation is a necessity. Our friendly server was very attentive and even though the restaurant was full we never felt neglected in any way. Open since 2013, The Glass Monkey aims to serve upmarket pub fare but they're certainly doing a lot better than "pub food." You will still find fries, wings, dry ribs, and potato skins on the menu, however, I actually get the impression that their cuisine has likely continued to elevate over time, evolving into a more upscale dining experience than was maybe initially intended. No harm in that! Once settled into a lovely table by a window I got to deciding on a beverage. I was excited to find Früli beer on offer but was even more dazzled by the "Monkeytails" which are a collection of fun, on-theme cocktails. These drinks have adorable names; like the Curious George and the Monkey Wrench. However, it had to be the Banana Colada (Malibu rum, banana liqueur, coconut milk, pineapple & orange juice - $14.95) for me because I was in the mood for something sweet and fun. You'll notice that The Glass Monkey's logo is a wine glass with one of those plastic monkeys hanging off the rim... Do you actually get a monkey on your glass in real life?! (These are the important questions!) The answer is YES! My drink had a whole chain of little rainbow-coloured monkeys dangling from it and I was beyond delighted! The cocktail itself was everything that I was hoping for and it mostly tasted like candy. I made a comment that I could easily consume the whole thing without much thought and not even realize what I'd done. Tropical, fruity, and fun, the Banana Colada is definitely a monkey's favourite cocktail. The food menu is surprisingly extensive!! From appetizers, to mains, to snacks & starters, you'll even find a full array of pizzas to choose from. I was pretty interested in the specials menu and was really into the Half Dozen Freshly Shucked 'Savage Blonde' Oysters ($21.95) which our server informed us were flown in the day prior. I'd heard that The Glass Monkey does a great job with seafood and was eager to insure that our meal involved some type of offering from the sea. Known for their smooth, blond shells and clean appearance and taste. These tide-tumbled, northern PEI oysters were served with a basic mignonette and Tabasco sauce. Fresh, crisp, and meaty, I loved the pronounced brine and sweet, stony finish. My only criticism is that the shucking was a bit sloppy. Many of the oysters were torn and not properly disconnected from the shells. I even had a few bites where small broken pieces of shell ended up in my mouth. On the plus side, the oyster liquor was still present in each one and was not spilt. I loved the sharp and zippy mignonette and overall was very happy to toss a few of these guys back. To bring some freshness to the meal I had to order the Fennel Salad (Light lemon vinaigrette with orange segments & hazelnuts - $14.95) because I love fennel! It's the most underrated vegetable in my opinion! This salad was perfect for springtime. Light, bright, and fresh! Full of flavour from the crisp anise notes of the fennel, to the juicy sweetness from the orange, and the crunchy sweet hazelnuts. Plus a hit of acidity from the vinaigrette and herbaceousness from the dill. I loved everything about this salad and was so pleased to find it on the menu. Highly recommend! No question about my main, I was ordering the Braised Lamb Shank (Braised 'Moroccan style' in fragrant red wine & tomato sauce served with couscous & broccoli - $34.95), one of The Glass Monkey's most revered dishes. A beautiful plate and a generous portion, the cook on the lamb was excellent

Gluten free menu items everywhere. And combined with 1/2 price wine Mondays, it's a treat to start off the week like this! The secluded patio is nice, but gets busy early. Entrance is around the side now, making it a little tough to spot the restaurant in the mall. There is a black strip of a sign lit at night - great signage, not so much during the day. The huge beige stucco wall is where you want to walk towards. Service on the night we visited was excellent. Attentive, but not intrusive. I decided that since Fish tacos can be served 2 ways, breaded (not GF), or pan fried (GF) - I'd have to check out the gluten free version. It was the crispiest crunchiest crust of a pan-fried fish (and definitely not overcooked) without breading I've ever had. The only comment I mentioned to the kitchen is that the tortillas don't break quite so fast if they are warmed up and if there happen to be 2 layers of them. Still I'd order it again any day. :-) If you opt for something from the fryer, it is shared, so not 100% gluten free. If you can tolerate it, excellent. Hostess Jeannine was delightful. We will be coming back. And bringing friends.

We have been customers of Glass Monkey for a while, but really picked up our frequency of curb side takeout and patio dining since the start of the Pandemic last year when we decided to adopt a number of locally run, small restaurants. Prior to restrictions, we attended a number of Wine Dinners here, as Owner Rob has an excellent wine list for a casual gastro pub in Edmonton, with great variety across a number of price points. The menu has a combination of comfort food, fusion, and their pizzas are excellent ( a personal favorite is the cremini mushroom with smoked provolone and truffle oil. We almost always have the roasted broccoli with olive oil and Asiago and roasted red pepper and feta to start. Of course, EVERY SINGLE TIME we go or get take out we order "Jack's Grill Bread Pudding" - a decades old classic that is one of Michael's favourite desserts in the city. When you have the chance, sitting on their patio (set back from the parking lot) with heaters and lights is lovely protected little corner that makes you forget you are in a strip mall. AND, if they are ever having "Ukrainian Night", be sure to pick up extra - all homemade and delicious!

I have to say this is my favorite restaurant in Edmonton. It has such a wonderful ambiance, worldwide selection of wines and delicious food that's perfect for sharing or for a delicious meal! The staff are incredible and make you feel like a regular no matter the frequency of your visits! A great date night, night with friends, of a fun meeting venue too!

    Bangers and mash! Super yum.

We live close to Glass Monkey, so I've been eager to try the place hoping to have a good local restaurant in our own backyard. I'm quite particular, and Glass Monkey did not disappoint. The atmosphere, service, food, and beer selection were great. The atmosphere is modern, but not cold. It's nicely designed, comfortable, and casual, but not too casual. Half the room is set up with higher tables around the bar, and the other half is restaurant seating. In contrast to some of the other reviews on Yelp, we had excellent service. Our server was friendly and knowledgeable. Attentive, but not annoyingly so. When we asked "what's good" she had great suggestions about what her top recommendations were and why she likes them. Perfect. I find it frustrating when you ask for recommendations and the server says "it's all good!" or they say "what do you like?". That did not happen. The server recommended the roasted carrots, the house-made ricotta, and flank steak to start, and that's what we did. They were all very good. The ricotta was particularly good. For mains, we both had the burger. I recently read Bacon Hound's review of the Glass Monkey burger, and it sounded pretty good, so I wanted to try it. It was good! My favourite burger in Edmonton is at The Next Act, but this comes in as a close second. They use proper ground chuck, and ask you how you want it cooked. We went with medium. You can really taste the quality of the meat, and the bun is great. Perfectly seasoned. I'm a fan. Finally, they have an excellent beer selection! IPAs, Belgians, Wheat Beers, woo! The server recommended the Ommegang BPA on tap, and it was great. Hooray for servers that can make good recommendations. We enjoyed Glass Monkey and we'll definitely be back. ** Update - June 2nd, 2014 ** We've been back to Glass Monkey a couple of times since my original review, and I need to update. The service has always been good, but you know, the food is just ok and it's not up to the caliber you'd expect given their pricing. They charge high end prices for mid quality food. I had the burger again, and it wasn't great. It was fine. There is something about the texture of the meat that's just off, and the bun was soggy, and there was one flimsy piece of lettuce with two tiny tomato slices. Next time around I tried the house made sausages and I thought they were quite good, but my wife did not. We also had the Yakitori, which was good, and the meatballs and broccoli which were not good. Green beans were fine. So, unfortunately, I think we're done trying Glass Monkey. There are just way too many better places to eat that aren't so expensive. And I really don't mind paying high prices for good food, but the food has to be good.
