My wife and I had an excellent experience. Romantic dim lighting in a modern lounge atmosphere and the buzz of many other customers enjoying their night as much as we were. Polite staff made us feel very comfortable, and they had very good recommendations of drink and food. I had the burger (which apparently can be done rare to well done because of some brining process that is used) and my wife had the sausage entree. Both were fantastic and impressively flavourful. We followed the reviews on Yelp and ordered the fish tacos to start and the bread pudding to finish. We were glad to have ordered both! The manager ensured we were enjoying our dinner at various times throughout our visit (not in an annoying way though) and with dessert, he poured us some complimentary liquor to match our bread pudding so perfectly! The three of us each had one of the specials: butter chicken with naan bread; baby back ribs; duck confit. Dessert was cheesecake and ice cream from an Edmonton vendor. We sat on the patio on a sunny Saturday night. It was a casual dining experience. We gave our drink order and the server came back and said they were out of one of the items. He suggested a very good substitute. Then we ordered out starters and were told they were out of another item. We switched out order again. Then we ordered our mains and once again were told they were out of something. This was a daily special so that I can understand but the other items were regular menu items. Situation in the south side of the city, a little north of Southgate mall, this hole in the wall is a cozy little place for a mediocre meal. The first thing I noticed was the smell of fish- which I find disgusting, so this is part of the low rating. The service, I will say was very good. I do think our server talked too much though and I found myself thinking "just go away", but that also meant our water glasses were also full. The food itself was below average quality. I ordered a Hawaiian pizza, which I will add came very quick, but the taste was just not there. The crust was burst and the pizza itself lacked flavour. It was absolutely not worth the almost $16. I will not be going back at all and am still trying to wrap my head around why it was so busy. read more

From making reservations, to leaving after paying the bill, dining at the Glass Monkey was a great experience. We started with the charcuterie and cheese boards, and chose our drinks from a menu that offers a great array of beer, both artisanal and commercial. We then each had some tasty, satisfying entrees that ended with espresso and cappuccinos. Although pricier than other gastropubs, we feel that we paid for the unique Glass Monkey experience - the friendly, outstanding service, the welcoming atmosphere, the food and drink. I'm not sure if the "Less than 4-5 star reviewers" went to the same place! Or maybe they are just such foodies that they know more than I do! I truly believe most people love to share negative opinions rather than anything positive. For the record, this place crushed my expectations! I was kinda expecting a shitty time based on the reviews I read! So glad I went anyway! This place Rocked my food world! The appy's were great; from the cheese plate to the puréed parsnips! The wine and beer list rivals the best in Edmonton. The entree's were fresh and tasty! I had the duck! My guest had the lamb shank, they both were cooked perfectly and tasted amazing! Not only was the good delish; the service from Jo ( waitress) was bar none the best service I have ever had. Totally informative, wine and beer knowledgable and of course attentive. The owner, Rob, came by several times to check on us as well and even assisted us in a wine selection that was perfect! You are missing out if you do not give Glass Monkey a shot . I feel like I have hit the "skids" when it comes to my month of dining out ... :-( On my Friday night out with my companion, I chose the spot...having read some of the reviews AND that the Chef is from the now no longer Blue Pear....yes, my expectations were high since having been to the Blue Pear on more than one occasion, I have always enjoyed it and was quite impressed with the plating AND quality of the food.... So, with a not so full place (I made reservations earlier than I usually do), we were seated quickly, and in the FAR back (the last table for two). The person seating us was nice enough to ask if it was okay (since it was a bit tight there) or if we wanted a table for four instead with more room. We kept our table. We were greeted by our waiter who asked if we wanted water and left us the drink/wine list and the menus. Here is where the "fun" begins..... I would like to hope that establishments that "adopt" NOT "adApt" a particular SIGNATURE dish will adhere to it TO THE LETTER....yeah, NO. Yes, I am talking about the "Jack's Grill Bread Pudding". I will write about this now as it is foremost in my mind and STILL on my tastebuds. I ordered this dessert happily since having been to the now gone (insert SUPER SAD face here) Jack's Grill every time we went (which was at least once every 2 months, if not once a month). The waiter had described it "enough to share"...NOT true. It is the size of a slice of toast and as thick, which still doesn't explain the BURNT caramel at the top of it and the HUGE ball of whipped cream (it was the size of a very healthy scoop of ice cream...maybe to hide the burnt top of the bread?). Okay, sorry for the rant, but those of you who remember fondly and deliciously the Bread Pudding from Jack's Grill will understand... Our meals, my companion ordered the Mushroom Pizza (which came out about 10 minutes before my dish) was good and tasted good. I ordered the Flat Iron Steak with seasonal vegetables and the mashed potatoes. It was good, not great. We ordered 3 appetizers....the Hummus, Ricotta and Pureed Parsnips ...all three "dips" were good.... Again, someone forgot to let these folks know that Ricotta is NOT a dip and hence should not be creamy like cream cheese, rather like a soft cheese with a shape that you can cut with a butter knife. The wine list is good but by the glass if a CONSIDERABLE price point....for us, anyway, it was less expensive to order a whole bottle than to go go by the glass. In all, I will not be coming back for the restaurant menu portion of this place. Went to The Glass Monkey on my birthday which also happened to be their half-priced wine night.... Fantastic! My boyfriend and I were a little unsure of what to order since we had never been there before but our server was very helpful in describing the menu items. From the cold plates we tried the ricotta, flank steak and smoked salmon which were paired with their crostini breads. Next we ordered a couple of their "small plates" we tried the feta and fish tacos... Probably some of the best fish tacos I had ever had. The feta was creamy and flavourful and served in a roasted pepper with some crostini. Then on to our entrees I ordered the salmon from their large plates... It was nice and crisp on the outside and moist and flavourful on the inside. My boyfriend got the homemade sausage which he allowed me to try and it was nice and garlicky! And they make their own relish which he could not get enough of. After our entrees we wanted to try the bread pudding... But we were just too stuffed! I am very happy I discovered this restaurant on Yelp! I was looking for a location with diverse food and drink menus and an inviting atmosphere that could host a large group and had convenient parking (aka not Downtown or Whyte Ave). Glass Monkey hit all the marks and everyone was pleasantly surprised with the atmosphere and the beer/wine selection. The food was well prepared and everyone was happy with their orders. I went to the glass monkey for the first time this week. The staff were really nice and they made me feel welcome. The food was excellent and they have so many wonderful options! HOWEVER, I will never come back to the glass monkey. Personally I refuse to support a business in which the staff are not respected by management. I was having a wonderful experience until the interruption of a staff member being yelled at by management right in front of customers. My guests and I were very uncomfortable as it continued to occur through out our stay. 100% recommend getting your meal to go. read more

My husband and I went here for a birthday dinner. It was a strangely weird experience. Our hostess trainee was indifferent, the server was friendly but not very professional, and the food was mostly mediocre. The carrot appetizer was a very strange dice, almost like pellets! The wild mushrooms were over-powering in two dishes. The toasts served with the appetizers seemed stale. The carpaccio was good as was the house white. We were going to try dessert but gave up waiting for our server. The food was not the worst, just underwhelming. I know several restaurants in this price range that deliver so much more. My second time here. Large and great selection of wine and beers. Service was perfect. Atmosphere was fine but the large T.V showing football took away from any intimacy. I cant imagine coming in here to watch a game alone or with the guys . Wish there were more booths for me and my date. It was a Sunday at 7p.m and there was only 4 tables of diners. Fish Tacos were a great appetizer. I had the sirloin burger. Asked for medium but seemed to get well done. The burger seemed dry but my bun got soggy. Clearly homemade yet lacked a punch.The fries were o.k and the waitress confirmed they were frozen. The chef curry specials are a must, have not been close to disappointed yet and we get at least one every time we go. This is right in our neighbourhood and we keep meaning to go, so tonight was it! We really liked the atmosphere, relaxed, open, modern and warm. Wonderful service from start to finish and good recommendations for a new brew to try. My husband had a Scottish Ginger Beer he really enjoyed while I tried a new India Pale Ale. For dinner he had the pizza special which was obviously delish as it disappeared quickly! I had the chicken dish - perfect for a cool fall evening! Crispy coating served on a bed of kale with a maple jus and a biscuit. I have been to the Glass Monkey several times in the last few years. I feel that it has been stagnant or in decline for some time now. Had the hummus and olives as finger food with a glass of wine. The hummus is dense and heavy with no special taste. The olives have a significant citrus zest to them almost to the point of being sour. Also had thin slices rare beef which was tasty but not memorable. I hope they can regain some of the passion that they had when they first opened. read more

I come here because my friend always organizes an after-works drinks thing at this place. I love the location, lots of parking. The food is good but on the pricier side for what it is. That being said, the interior is warm and tastefully decorated and it's not so loud inside that you can actually have a great conversation with more than 1 person at a time. The one thing that bothers me about glass monkey is the service. For the last 4 visits, we've had the same male server and he only talks to the oldest white person in our group. I've witnessed this on various occasions. He has literally looked my way almost zero times during a whole 2 hour visit. It's quite amazing how he manages this but it really makes me feel unwelcome here. It's happened every single time I've been here, with the same male server. I haven't mentioned this to my friends but I am curious to see if they've noticed this too. I can't tell if he's racist or ageist or sexist but it's enough to make me not want to return to this place with a different group of friends or family. read more

The Glass Monkey goes above and beyond any expectations for a gastropub. I have been coming here for about a year now. Being a Celiac, venturing into restaurants can be a real challenge. Its very refreshing eating at a restaurant that not only accommodates your dietary needs; but informs you of the changes they've made in the kitchen to make sure your meal is safe. The staff is always friendly and makes spot on recommendations for what drinks to order and what their daily specials are. Grossly over-priced pub food. Wine for two and a charcuterie board cost a cool $100, which would have been fine, except the charcuterie board was awful and ridiculous; it had four items, including the largest wedge of blue cheese I'd ever seen. Had we gotten entrees (we didn't, after the horrible charcuterie board) our bill would have easily topped $200. The service was also terrible, but that seems to be par for the course these days. Given the prices Glass Monkey commands, Edmonton has about a million better restaurants you should probably go to instead. read more

My daughter and I had dinner at the Glass Monkey on a Friday evening. What a disappointment! The service was the worst I have ever experienced in Edmonton. My daughter ordered the spaghetti and when it arrived, there was about one cup of noodles in a thin, watery, tasteless sauce; she would have been better off with a can of Alphagetti. I had the pappardelle; the presentation was terrible, the pork shoulder was crudely ripped off the bone and served in massive, tasteless chunks with a couple of noodles thrown over the heap of meat. For the quality of the food the prices are exorbitant. No one ever came to check on our table or ask how things were. Water refills were never offered, a drink took 20 minutes to arrive. I thought the concept of the gastropub was fun, but if you want a nice night out this is not the place to go. Hope they can pick it up. read more

After reading the other reviews of Glass Monkey, I felt I needed to get our opinion in as well. We have been to the Monkey three times now. The first time we had items from the snack menu and found all to be very tasty and interesting. We were looking for something small to get our appetite going and not something to fill us up. We had the hummus and the flank steak. The portions were small but again we were expecting just some tastes to get the taste buds going. The flank steak was nicely marinated and flavourful. The hummus was a bit bland but this was early on in the life of the restaurant. The crostinis that were to accompany the dishes were so fresh that we had to wait to have them prepared. Following the snacks we had pizzas, mine the margarita and my Wife had the special that night with kale and mushroom forming the main ingredients. Both were very good and as we were early that night, they were straight out of the oven. Our most recent stop was with some friends arriving at 5:30. As most at the table were trying to watch the amounts we were eating at this time in our lives, we tried to avoid snacks or appetizers, except that I could not pass up the chance to try the triple-cooked fries for all 5 of us to share. The fries were crisp and nicely seasoned and certainly the best fries I've had in some time. My friend had the beet salad and our main courses were the burger, spaghetti, polish sausage and 2 crisp chicken thigh plates. The chicken thighs were a big hit and appear to be one of the better dishes here. The spaghetti and sausage dishes were very good. The burger got a mediocre review, not bad but not up to expectations. We all had beers to go along with our meals and selection was good and varied, including highly-potent belgian beers on special. There were a few desserts ordered. A molten chocolate mini cake and 2 of the classic bread puddings. The chocolate cake was reviewed as being as expected and the bread puddings were the usual top quality, exactly like Jack's used to do. For those who have not had this, it is a dense layered bread pudding with a rum sauce that is to die for. I mean that - this is the last thing I want to eat before I die. It is served in a shallow bowl that is left under the broiler prior to serving. I've had this dish for years and it has never been off and has always been consistently prepared. You can not go wrong. The menu does try to provide a little bit of something for everyone but it is also not overwhelming. The menu fits on a sheet the size of a place mat so you just have to work through your cravings and pick. It was nicely busy when we arrived at 5:30 but it did get very busy and we noticed a number of people waiting to get in when we left. The staff is very attentive and knowledgeable about their menu and kitchen and could answer any question we had. The Glass Monkey was bang on for our expectations and delivered a great night out. I went with my adult family and between the bunch of us tried most things on the small menu. The food has its hits and misses and would warrant a rating of 4. The atmosphere however is nerve racking. The finishes and textures are such that small noises easily carry and with a crowd of people I could hardly hear myself think never mind participate in a conversation. Each table has to compete to be heard and the obnoxious seem to win. I did like the full screen TV and the unique beers on tap were very good. We love to support local restaurants and businesses (we live in the Malmo neighborhood) so we were thrilled to give this restaurant a try. We were glad we reserved a table because the restaurant was packed, but we were not overly impressed. Because this is a local restaurant we are willing to give it a second try. The restaurant was quite small and extremely loud. It was very difficult to hear and be heard at our table. Granted, our 2-top was crammed in-between a 6-top and a table of at least 12 (loud and extremely annoying) people. Our server assured us at least twice that she would be right with us - but it took 15 minutes before anyone took our drink order. Throughout the night the server left our drinks empty for a period of time, which we were not happy about. We could see she was busy with the large parties but I don't believe that is any excuse to let your customers sit with no food or drinks in front of them. We were not entirely happy with the restaurants willingness to accommodate my boyfriend's deadly nut allergy. He spoke to the server (after noticing quite a few dishes containing nuts) and was a bit shocked by her response. After explaining his allergy he asked if they could accommodate him, and she advised that they have an open kitchen and it could be a problem. My boyfriend asked "So are you saying we shouldn't eat here?" and she respond "Yes, pretty much". He asked to speak with a manager and she told the owner to come see us. The server didn't even relay our concerns to the owner so my boyfriend had to repeat himself to him. The owner didn't seem keen to help, asking, "So what kind of guarantee are you looking for?" This isn't the first restaurant we've been to, typically when he says he has a nut allergy restaurants are very accommodating and tell us that they will advise the kitchen and take care of it by wiping down surfaces and checking any outside products to ensure they do not contain nuts while making sure dishes made with nuts are not prepared in the same area. The owner ended up assuring us he would accommodate my boyfriend's allergy but it really took quite a bit of pushing on our end. We expected better service from a private restaurant since even chain restaurants have been more than accommodating. Overall the food was decent. We enjoyed the concept of the 'snacks', which were - as another Yelper said - more like 'taste size'. From the Snack menu we ordered the Ricotta, Roasted Carrots, Smoked Salmon, Hummus and Deviled Eggs. We thoroughly enjoyed the Ricotta, it was deliciously sweet with the apricot chutney. Our least favorite snack was the Deviled Eggs (which we ordered by default because they were out of the Olives). My boyfriend and I love Beef Carpaccio and order it at every restaurant that serves it. The Carpaccio at Glass Monkey was a very large portion but the mustard used in the dish was extremely overpowering. We will not be ordering that dish again. So far, Cactus Club has the best Carpaccio in town. From the Small Plates menu we also ordered the Meatballs and the Green Beans. The Meatballs had a strange (but not really bad) texture. Almost... rubbery? But more like... dense. And the Green Beans were something we could have easily made better at home. I had a couple glasses of Giribaldi Moscato d'Asti sparking wine, which I absolutely loved. My boyfriend had Big Rock beer and a half-liter of red wine (can't remember which kind). There were no cocktail drink menus available at our table - but I did see some tables receive martinis, while another table ordered tea. It seems you need to ask the right questions to have any other options offered to you. Overall the food alone would not bring us back, however we believe that every restaurant deserves a couple tries before we make up our mind. Perhaps when the weather is warmer we will walk over for a few beers on the patio. read more
