We had the fortune of meeting a friend here that has been going to the other branch for 40 years and he swears by its authenticity. We started off with Kir Royales which is the quintessential pre meal beverage. And then moved on to mains as appetizers are not necessary given the portions. Their cassoulet was incredible with real stick to your ribs appeal. However I feel the star of the show was their 5 diamond salade. Imagine a bed of greens supporting their duck fat potatoes fried crisp, topped with generous portions of lardons and chicken livers. All garnished with mini rounds of cheese on toast and a fried egg! What is not to like? The decor is classic diner, nothing fancy it it is all about the food. Service was friendly and not intrusive.

We found the service quite friendly unlike what I was expecting after the reading of some of the Yelp review. Our server was super friendly even with my lack of the French language. I just showed him my Google translator to help when I ordered or needed an item. He did offer me a wine recommendation to accommodate my basque chicken meal that I did enjoy. My chicken was tender and fell off the bone. I would have liked a bit more meat in my dish. It came with a thigh and a small wing. For the price of 14 EUR, I would have like at least two thigh or a small chicken breast. Food was good not sure if it's something I would go back for. Desserts were a nice closer to the meal. Overall the vibe and service was a 4 star rating but food wise I would give it a 3.

Good list of wines and spirits, with wine by the glass still reasonable (€7). I had oxtail terrine as a starter - it was delicious, literally cleaned the plate. Veal liver with mushrooms was outstanding - real wild mushrooms (for those of us visiting from the US, it is a big deal), liver itself perfectly cooked as requested and perfectly seasoned. I like how side dishes are served in the little cups, without clobbering your plate. Had some Basque cake as a desert - that was not my favorite, but that's okay. Excellent service, prompt, friendly, attentive. Definitely recommended. Also reservations are highly recommended.

The skin was crispy the meat was moist - the flavor was superb. It was so good, my sister was gnawing on the bone. We also ordered a salad and came with generous prawns and the goat cheese filled phyllo dough crisp on top, we also ordered scallops with crab stuffed peppers. Everything came out all at once and we were pretty excited to dig in. Make sure you reserve lots of time to just enjoy wine and conversation bc this place gets busy but you know the food is being cooked up to perfection. With two glasses of wine, coke, and three dishes our bill came out to about $85, which is a great deal considering we were quite stuffed. We also ate at instragramable venues: Girafe, Kong, and Cafe de Flore...and this place, off the beaten path, was THEE Best! Recommend you download Google translator to understand the menu. Service was also very kind and warm!

Solo dinner, €98 tasting menu, one of the best bistro meals I've had in Paris…read more This kitchen makes simple things incredible. Mushroom mousse with cacao -- sounds weird, totally works. Great octopus. Then the surprise of the night: bolognese with carrots, and it was amazing -- deep slow-cooked sauce against sweet carrots. Salmon with tomatoes cutting the fat, then veal sweetbreads with mash that's basically butter. No complaints. The riz au lait -- I'd heard the hype for years and it still blew me away. One of the best desserts I've ever had, period. Worth coming for this alone. Wine list is small but sharp -- all French, small growers, glasses from €9. The Roussette de Savoie from Dupasquier (€11) was the discovery of the night: mineral, sharp, alpine. Then a Savigny-lès-Beaune with the bolognese -- perfect match. €133 all-in. In New York this would cost double. Loud, tight, zero pretension -- exactly what a Paris bistro should be.

It was…read morerecommended to me by a well known French chef in NYC and it lived up to all my expectations. Contrary to some of the other reviews, we were not surrounded by American tourists. Lots of French speaking diners with a few people from the UK and America. The restaurant is quite cozy with a large communal table in the center of the restaurant and tables close to each other on the sides. You will become friends with those around you because you are thatclose. There is also counter/high-top seating outside. Since it's a small dining room, you also get a view of the Chef and his team in action. We started with the roasted octopus and for les plats my mom had the roasted veal sweetbread and I had the duck breast. The duck was cooked to perfection - tender and flavorful with a hint of smokiness. The sweetbread was delicious! It was crispy on the outside but the inside was tender. A side of purée de pommes de terre comes with each dish. For dessert, I opted to satisfy my chocolate craving with the chocolat blanc et noir (white and dark chocolate mousse). My mom wanted fruit so she had the cremeux de citron, fraise ananas et passion. Our server was great as was the entire team. Definitely make a reservation as it fills up quickly, This is definitely on my list of places to return to on my next visit to Paris.

Friday lunch was an absolute beauty…read more The food? Fantastic. The wait times? Let's just say we're in Paris, not a Formula 1 pit lane. We'll leave it at that. We headed to Chez Janou, a Paris institution. I hadn't been in years, but my son insisted we go back because, according to him, they have the best chocolate mousse in Paris. Judging by the lineup, half the city; and every tourist with an Instagram account showed up. Thankfully we had a 2pm reso. Here's the thing, though. Everyone talks about the mousse, but the food deserves just as much attention. I'd also forgotten how much I love the 3rd arrondissement. Wander a few minutes from the restaurant and you'll find beautiful art galleries, a gorgeous little park, and some of the best boutique shopping in Paris. It's one of those neighbourhoods where you accidentally walk 15,000 steps without realizing it. Now, here's your game plan. Start with the escargots or the gambas to share. For your main, order the farci provençal or the foie de veau. The farci is like a French version of a stuffed pepper: yummy comfort food with a southern coast twist. As for the foie de veau... I actually ordered it by mistake. I thought I was getting regular veal. Out came veal liver. Best mistake of the day. I love liver. My mom makes an incredible liver and onions, so I'm a tough judge. This was outstanding. Rich, buttery, perfectly cooked and perfectly salted. It was so good I immediately texted my mom and told her she's coming here the next time she's in Paris. Drum roll, please... The chocolate mousse. Was it worth all the hype? Yep. There are no fancy swirls or little artistic desserts here. A server simply walks over carrying what looks like a white industrial-sized bowl of chocolate mousse and casually drops a mountain of it onto your plate. Everyone grabs a spoon and starts digging in. It's wonderfully French. Simple. Unpretentious. Ridiculously good. So yes, Chez Janou lives up to the hype. But don't just come for the mousse. Come for the lunch, stay for the neighbourhood, and spend the afternoon getting happily lost in one of the best corners of Paris. That's a Friday well spent.
