The Met Stop Diner - Diner decor

The Met Stop Diner

(1 review)

Wythenshawe in South Manchester isn't really known as a gastronomic destination. The majority of…read morerestaurants listed for the area are take-aways and cafes, all of which I'm sure are great in their own regards, but they're all pretty similar. This is why I like The Met Stop Diner. Someone decided to take a vacant space in Wythenshawe's town centre Civic Centre shopping precinct and build an American themed diner. Something different! A new angle! When you walk in, it's nice to see that they haven't half-baked it, they've gone for the full classic American diner interior, with red, white and chrome seating, condiment baskets, and a big mural of the New York skyline on one wall. The menu does try to cater for multiple tastes, with some classic English cafe classics such as the Full English Breakfast, but they have a good selection of American breakfasts too, as well as hot dogs, burgers, deli style sandwiches, and a few house specialities. My favourite part of England meets America was that on the tables there was one of those little silver ice cream dishes, which we came to realise were specifically for putting your tea bag in after taking it out of your tea! WHY DON'T MORE PLACES DO THIS?! This is such a simple idea, but I've only seen The Met Stop Diner do it so far, and they're American themed! There were three of us on this day, and we were all ready for breakfast, and so chose the American pancake stack, the Full English Breakfast, and the American Breakfast, as well as three mugs of tea. The tea came out first which was good as we all needed a brew, but as the breakfasts were cooked fresh to order, we'd drunk our tea by the time our food came out. A pot of tea might be a better idea, but it's not very American! The Full English was a standard cafe breakfast to be honest, but still decent homely stuff. The American breakfast was so substantial that it couldn't be finished, but it was agreed that the pancakes were great, as they were also on the stack of pancakes. Very enjoyable indeed. We'll definitely pop in again when we're next in the area, as the rest of the menu looks great too! The only thing I would suggest is reprinting the menus (as they were looking a bit dog-eared), and checking the spellings (Chicago, not "Chicargo"!), but if that's really the only thing I can find to suggest as an improvement, you're definitely doing something right, Met Stop! See you again soon!

I came in, and I was upset with very poor service. There was no sign saying "Please wait to be seated" and no staff around, so I waltzed in, only to be greeted by a very rude member of staff, who I when I asked for a gluten free menu, he said "I'm not a waiter", he repeated this when he finally brought me menus over. A few minutes later, a waitress tried to take my order which was impossible as he hadn't given me a gluten free menu, and even then I had to try my best to get someone's attention which was difficult. The gluten free menu in my opinion was quite poor and a little overpriced, I was also confused why they'd only offer an egg-white omelette rather than a standard omelette. Eventually, with the service being so poor and the choice, I decided to walk out to go somewhere else. Having had bad experiences with Frankie and Benny's in Manchester Printworks and Rochdale, I decided to give them one more chance which I now regret, as for me it was nothing but a waste of time due to the awful pricing, selection and service which I have discussed in my review.

Theres no waiting to see people to tables, so most just walk in. Which seems to get you better service than waiting like we did. After we were sat. We saw several people walk in and order before us. A table next to us even got their food soon after entering. By this time we had to make a fuss to get some service. The food is of the usual F&B averageness. A breakfast burger at over £10 with not a lot on it seems very steep though. Overall a disappointing trip to a place that doesn't really raise your expectations anyway. If I hadn't been having the, required by law, holiday breakfast beer before 6am, I wish I'd done to Burger King.

The manager offered to make fresh coffees and kindly explained about the quality of their coffee, supplied by Dark Woods Coffee and suggested this coffee ain't Costa - I do agree. My new coffee tasted identical to the original but my wife thought hers less 'sour'. Dark Woods provide the coffee and hand roast their beans on a 1950's Probat drum roaster. They are top notch on the environmental and social impact and certified B Corp - 5 green stars here. When tasting think terroir, varietals and process. I had the chestnut & wild mushrooms with garlic & herbs on organic sourdough supplied by an artisan maker. This dish was well balanced, delicious and a decent portion. My wife had the salmon bagel with cream cheese and scallions. She declared it delicious too (salmon delicately smoked by the Manchester Smoke House and bagel baked perfectly by the Bread Factory, Manchester). The sparkling water came well chilled and in a recyclable bottle. We were seated out back at a wobbly table that only required me putting my shoe on the base, the service was attentive, we were suitably distanced from other diners and they genuinely cared that we thought the milk in coffees was off. The place was spic & span clean and with their focus and transparency on quality organic food, preserving the environment (remember folks the earth is our only home) and relying on artisans for produce it's 5 green stars for them too. Really worth supporting.
