We celebrated my nephew's birthday here on a weekday night, and despite the relatively little amount of customers, the service was slow. Their menu was inflexible and seriously lacking in variety. Having a server come cut the raw meat and place it in the grill for you seems wildly inefficient especially if you order for 4-6 people like our party had ordered. As a SoCal native, I'm used to AYCE KBBQ, so this slow KBBQ style was unsettling. The low point was when the server brought us our tofu soup as we were paying. Furthermore, this place is extremely pricey even for Kalakaua Ave. standards. It's always a disappointment when you leave a restaurant dissatisfied that dinner was neither worth the cost nor the time spent. read more

Many parts of Korean food have long since been assimilated into Hawaiian cuisine. Korean dishes like Kalbi and Kim Chi are easier to find in Hawaiian menus than traditional Polynesian fare like Poi or Lomi Lomi. So its shocking to me to find such a crappy Korean restaurant in Waikiki as is Ginza Won. While it certainly looks and feels like a Korean BBQ restaurant, not much in here tastes Korean. Most of the staff I saw were Japanese which should have been my first hint that perhaps Ginza Won wasn't authentic. In fact, the menu was written in both English and Japanese with no Korean text to be found. Regardless of the optics - the most important issue is that the food was not only Not Korean - it was also Not Good. All of the pickled side dishes and the entree's we ordered (Tofu Soup, Spicy Beef Stew, and BBQ Kalbi) were just poorly prepared and poor tasting. This might have been a mis-match in expectation as I was expecting traditional Korean flavors and got something completely different. But hey, it is advertised as a Korean restaurant, so who's to blame?. None in my party finished the meal so we had to add some additional dishes at other establishments to satiate our appetites despite shelling out money for meals that themselves weren't cheap. read more

We stayed at the Sheraton down the street (well a few blocks away) and tried a bunch of the Yakiniku spots around the area. Heads and tails (no pun intended) above Hiroshi which is also close by. Ginza has an awesome copper-style grill, and meat cuts were infinitely better than anything I've had on the mainland. Rivals New Otani's Yakiniku in Tokyo. Much better value than Totoraku in LA but definitely bloody amazing. I believe they have changed names and maybe wanted to get a fresh start from the old rep but whatever is going on here - it's great. Owner is Korean and caters to Japanese clientele. But unlike Ktown in LA, there is no animosity here towards Japanese and menu options are all in triple languages for the most part. A must try in Hawaii. read more

Had to review this place after two awesome meals and realizing that the other reviewers were clueless on the ins and outs of Waiks dining. First off, it's all about happy hour (5-6:30PM Fri-Sat). If it's not happy hour, you probably won't be too happy about it. The dishes are a little pricey (~$13-20), but it's half off during happy hour and the first beer is $0.99! My picks are the marinated short rib (kalbi), pork belly, and the infamous IPR! It's actually Inner Part of the Rib! I've never seen or heard of this offered before, and it's awesome! My brother from another mother is practically their most regular customer, and despite the fact that the staff's collective English is minimal at best, they all know what we're talking about when we start laughing and loudly proclaiming, IPR! Comes with plenty of refillable veggies (Usually kim chee, bean sprouts, cabbage, and raddish) for those of us not trying to die anytime soon. The verdict: come during happy hour, fry up some meat, fill up on veggies, round it off with a bi bim bap (gotta let them mix it with extra house sauce and let the rice get crispy in the hot stone pot!), and enjoy your dollar beer, cuz the next one is $4.50! By the way, laver is seaweed, and I'm not giving up the secret parking spot, but locals know the drill and all others, hopefully you're walking from your hotel, if not, good luck! Make sure to make plenny noise ah and thank the super gracious staff and owner with a good tip. Come here for Korean food but end up with a very unhappy experience! The menu doesn't look authentic with only very few items of Korean. We ordered a spicy tofu soup. Before ordering, we inquire the waiter whether the tofu soup can be made NOT spicy, and he said yes! When the tofu soup came, it was brightly red and looks very spicy. The waiter asked me to take a sip to see if acceptable, I tried and told him it was too spicy for me to handle and asked the soup to be replaced. He replied that the kitchen was very busy and don't have time to accommodate the change. One gentleman, who looks like the boss, were standing by the kitchen door and screaming at us. Not sure what exactly he was saying. But surely he was not looking friendly. We Insist the soup to be replaced. The waiter took it back to the kitchen with a long face. We waited more than half an hour for the soup. When It finally came back, we had already lost the appetite. We consumed less than 10% of the soup, pay the bill and gave 10 CENT for tips. Left the restaurant unhappy and still hungry! Don't come here for good food or good service! read more

The restaurant is in a bit of a dark alley, walking there reminded me of restaurants in Korea... but then that was all that reminded me of Korea. Once we got there, the place was small and busy. We were a party of 12, and this place is definitely not for groups. We were given three types of banchan, which were all bland. Food wise... Pajeon (scallion pancake) - meh Bibimbab - 80% rice and 20% vegetables? That's unheard of... terrible. Kimchi Chigae - definitely not a stew... more towards a soup and one of the worst I've had. Yookgaejang (spicy beef and scallion soup) - mediocre Galbi - ok (only decent dish) The service was slow and awful. As a large group, I'm sure we backed up the kitchen, but they kept on taking more customers and those customers received their food before we did. We waited about 30 minutes for half the food and an additional 10-15 minutes for the rest. Then they forgot one Kimchi Chigae so that took an additional 10-15 minutes. Along the bustling streets in Waikiki there are plenty of dining options, many of them upscale, and many of them different varieties of Asian food. My boyfriend and I were having trouble deciding on something when we came across a large sign depicting a lot of delicious looking food photos and the words "Korean BBQ" with an arrow pointing down a sketchy looking, broken looking side street or alley. We peered down the alley and say a flag that said Something along the lines of "Korean Restaurant 17th Anniversary." The building next toot had a crumbling balcony, and there were random dudes hanging out near motorcycles and milling about smoking. We almost didn't turn down that street. But I'm so glad we did. Inside the restaurant was small, a little cluttered, but cozy. There was only one other white couple, and the rest was full of Korean and Japanese families. The servers greeted us with friendly smiles and we were immediately seated. The menu was a little on the confusing side. Plenty of good photos, but the dishes only had titles in English and then the whole description was in Korean and Japanese characters. My boyfriend had never had Korean BBQ before, so we decided to try something else. The servers can speak basic English but when we asked questions about items there was a bit of a communication barrier. Despite that they were very friendly and tried to be helpful. We ended up kind of choosing half-blind, based on title and photographs. The BF got the Bibimbap Vege in Hot Stone, and I got the Bibimpbap with Raw Beef. The only have two beers on tap, Ashai and Kirin, so we got Kirin. The food came quickly. It began with sides, and all of them were delicious, especially the mung bean sprouts with sesame oil and the kin chee! Both of our meals were delicious also. The Bf's hot stone bibimbap was sizzling hot enough to cook the raw egg on it. The raw beef on top of mine was chilled at almost freezing temp, with an egg yolk on top, and had the most delicious marinade! The veggies in the bibimbap were delicious, especially the brown, stalky stems which I couldn't identify (I thought for a moment it was Gobo but I think it was something else). When we got the bill our Kirins were only 95 cents each. 95 cents!!! Totally unexpected when we though we'd be shelling out around 4-5 bucks for them. Prices are a bit on the high side (15-ish each for the bibimbap whereas the BBQ options run between $25-35 per person) but the beer more than made up for it for me! read more

If I could give less than one star I would, I came in on Friday evening with my two cousins( all three of us are half Korean) ordered or food and was extremely disappointed upon arrival of the food, you could tell that we were getting the "tourist " version. So I asked for all the correct sauces and the reply was "wow you must eat a lot of Korean food" to which I replied "yes, I am Korean" Minus the food being $50 a person, I asked for the check and the waiters all sat down to eat. I asked for the check again and again he sat back down and continued to eat. This is one of those places that if you aren't full Korean they will treat you like dirt. We were so hungry so we saw a sign on the strip and it had lots of pictures on it. It is through an alley. I ordered tofu stew and my friend ordered the short rip noodle soup. $12.90 ish each. That's kind of expensive. In Seattle, I pay only around 7-10 dollars. We came in and it was kind of awkward because no one greater us. Only 4 side dishes. It was okay. This one star review is for their service. People put their names on the waiting list. It must have been their friends, at the bottom of the list because the server allowed them to get seated right away. He crossed off their name from the bottom of the waiting list. And everyone else kept waiting. Regret even stepping foot here, should have just gone for some fast food. read more

Ginza Yen is like finding a diamond in the dust. Homey ambience and delicious grindz - it's a hard combination to find in the midst of the busy Waikiki setting. It's a fusion of Yakiniku and Korean BBQ. The meat portions are generous, a definite plus, the complementary salad ('Ono dressing) and the various banchan overflowed our table [the server literally brought another small table so we could fit all the dishes]. Get the pork belly and the sirloin! Also the soondubu was super authentic. A con was there was a couple cuts of meat that were really tough & hard to slice, but the waiter came to assist. Service is good: frequently refilled our water & checked in to see if we wanted to order anything else. Ambience: it's homey, a bit small but there's plenty of tables. There's like bamboo partitions between tables for a bit of privacy. It's a lot bigger on the inside than it looks from the outside. Location: hard to find so make sure to use google maps. Also bring cash for parking. We had a big group of people & everyone left extremely full. It's run by a hardworking Korean family. Support local! read more
