Solid lunch spot in Sellwood. It was fairly busy, and only one front staff person, so maybe plan on a more leisurely lunch. The shrimp scampi was tasty, a little under seasoned, but the garlic bread that came with it was awesome. The tiramisu was pretty good, and the cannoli was ok. The shells were crunchy, but the filling wasn't as thick as I like it. Lots of chocolate tho. All in all, I would come back here again. read more

great service and i've loved Gino's every time i have been in... BUT: on my most recent visit i got the bolognese for the first time. It had *so much nutmeg* in it that it felt like eating a christmastime pie. it smelled like a pumpkin spice latte, not pasta. it tasted like a clove cigarette. I had a few bites and had to call it quits. I know that it says "herbs and spices" in the description of the dish on the menu, but perhaps a bit more warning that this is not a traditional flavor profile is warranted. read more

I'm trying to make it a thing to visit all the restaurants in Sellwood and this time was Italian. We got there right before the dinner rush and had the option to sit inside or outside. We opted for the latter cause you know, covid and everything. They had a good dozen tables outside, some near portable heaters. We started with the beet salad which was sooooo good (and I assume could be veganized sans the cheese). I got a glass of rosé because I'm not a fan of Italian reds (heresy, I'm sure) and my husband got a beer. For entrees, spaghetti and meatballs and penne allá vodka. The entrees were served with a chunk of toasted and buttered bread. Portions were super generous and we had leftovers to take home. I wish I had room for dessert because I really wanted some tiramisu. Next time! Service was great and relaxed, felt no rush, everything was timed perfectly. Food was delicious and I look forward to coming back and trying something else. Pretty reasonable for a good Italian meal -- a big salad, two drinks, two entrees, and tip came to $78. read more

We have eaten at Ginos many times and enjoyed it. Last night (Wed) we arrived at 5:00 w/o a reservation however only 2 people on the bar side and maybe 3 tables occupied in dining room. A young man met us outside before entering asking if we had a reservation to which we replied "no" thinking at 5:00 we would not have a problem being seated. He instructed us to wait outside while he set up a table? It was dark, windy, & cold...but we followed his lead. After freezing outside he invited us into the bar where two place settings awaited us at a long table just inside the door,not in the dining room! We walked out as this felt distespectful considering the sparse patronage. Went to Papa Haydn's where we were treated with respect and received yummy dinners. Here's a tip- wait staff and bartenders do not eaves drop on customer's conversations and then butt in with an opinion. We pay you to serve not to give your 20- something year old opinion to people three times your age. Sorry- that's the hospitality business. First off, the staff were fantastic. The young lady and the young man helping us when we checked in we're so friendly and nice and even though we thought we had a reservation, but it turned out it didn't go through. They accommodated us anyway, and made sure we had drinks while we were waiting. The food was great. This was our first time there as we had received a gift certificate from a friend. We were very very delighted with the food. The shrimp as a starter were fantastic and the chicken piccata was huge and. We shared it and that was plenty for both of us. I have been dying to get back to this place since the first time I went there over 2 years ago finally I got my sister-in-law to go with me, once again I was able to have the most delectable mind-altering Caesar salad in southeast Portland it is truly fabulous with just the right amount of ingredients that make up a caesar salad and I do know a thing or two about a caesar salad. I followed that up with their clams in a Buttery wine sauce that was so satisfying ,buttery garlic toast on the sides all the way around the plate. my meal was prepared and served to perfection It was like entering a new realm of dining on Italian cuisine my only critique would be is to put the name of your establishment on the outside of your building so that people can find it easier other than that wonderful. read more

Four of us had dinner at Gino's and all parties thought their meal was delicious. The standout however was the Vongole pasta. Pasta and clams is one of my favorite dishes and this was the best serving I have ever had. Excellent pasta and a generous serving of Manila clams. The fish fumet broth was a perfect base for this meal. Others had bolognese sauce on their pasta, raviolis, and a lasagna dish. All raves about their meals. Used to have a huge Caesar salad that could be split by several people. None of this is current. Ugh! The previous owner would be turning over in his grave. Sad. We dined at Gino's a few moths ago and I am not happy to write a negative review for the restaurant we have been loyal customers to for close to 30 years. Gino's was always our go-to spot for special occasions, family get together's, date nights and just a fun, happy hour at the bar. Sadly something has gone terribly wrong with the food! What the heck happened to your great chefs??? Are they all heavy smokers now, with few taste buds? For the third time (as we kept trying to re-create the wonderful meals of the past) we were terribly disappointed with our dinners. It wasn't just one person who was unhappy, but all three of us had to throw in the towel and cut our celebration short. Our salads tasted like they've been doused with pure vinegar. They were so sour we felt like we were getting sore throats. Our entrées were covered in salt, so intense, we couldn't believe the difference in the quality. Me and my family members used to go to Gino's at least three times a month. We are stunned at the changes and sad the ambiance is not what it once was. The loud, pounding music and chilly service threw us off when it was once so welcoming and friendly and comfortable. The vibe is definitely different now. Such a disappointing and EXPENSIVE evening that was supposed to be a grand celebration. So much has been taken from us in the past three years and now we've lost our all time favorite restaurant... hopefully, not for good. Please, please, PLEASE think about your loyal customer base and bring back the old and wonderful Gino's! I'm so sorry to post this but we are hoping something will change and can return once more. read more

Wish I could rate lower than a star. Wait time was horrendous and the server tried gilt tripping me in to buying a bottle of wine when I didn't like it in the first place. At the end I didn't finish my food because it was awful still payed still tipped in cash I tip 15$ but come to review my banking transaction I was charged an extra 20$ on the receipt. Usually I just sign and put the total but now I've lost all my trust in this establishment and will be putting a big 0.00 as tip on the receipt if I ever go again probably not though unbelievable read more

Used to love this place and been going here for at least a decade. Tonight was potentially the worst service I've had in 39 years of enjoying restaurants. Major attitude. Showed up 25 minutes before closing time, in sport coats and respectful. Waiter came to our table and said "what are you doing here?" He was very angry that we showed up and we were Immediately judged. Ordered 6 drinks, two food items, and charged an auto-20% gratuity. Extreme attitude a la Portland. Will tell everyone I know to avoid Gino's at all costs. Do not go here because they do not want your business. Been reading other reviews and see a common theme...this restaurant, once great, has absolute contempt for its customers. Disappointed over all. Entered through the bar, wandered around until we found someone-- the host stand is not easy to find. Was a little awkward until we found someone to check in with bc we had made a reservation. We were sat in a cozy booth in the front window of the larger dining room side. I loved the table at first but then no one came to take our order for drinks for close to 15 minutes. Maybe bc this table is a little hidden? Clams were lack luster flavor. Food took a long time to arrive. My pork chop was also lacking something flavorful and husbands pasta was over cooked (at an Italian restaurant--how?!) we don't get out much for date nights so it stings a little more when restaurants are mediocre. Wasn't terribly busy but our server didn't check in often.. over all the experience just took too long. read more

I thoroughly enjoyed my birthday dinner at Gino's last night! It was our first time trying this restaurant so we weren't sure of what to expect. I had made reservations for 7pm but was running late so I called ahead to request being sat at 7:15 instead. They kindly accommodated my request, and upon arrival we were promptly seated. It was surprisingly busy for a Wednesday night so I appreciate their flexibility. My husband and I both ordered the mussels, and were shocked by how large the servings were. The broth for the mussels was outstanding, and the mussels were plump and sweet! My children ordered the putanesca, and Grandma Jean's pastas which were hearty, huge in size, and delicious. We definitely had tons of leftovers which were tasty the next day as well. We look forward to returning again. read more
