I live in DC but whenever I'm home to see family in Walnut, I make an appointment with Christine at Gino Hair for a cut and/or color. I told her that I hate going in too often for coloring because I'm lazy and it's expensive, so she recommended a balayage coloring which is a lot easier to maintain (you only need to go in every few months if you want to maintain it, or just let it grow out naturally if you don't and you don't get that crazy root look). I got my brows waxed by Stacey this time and she was great -- she gave me tips on where i need to fill in more and how to "compensate" for the difference between my brows. This review is for Shin Nails, located inside Gino Hair Mode. Joy, the owner and manicurist, has a table right by the door. This is by appointment only. No walk ins. Joy takes very good care of your nails, doing everything by hand, no drills. She is very immaculate and pays very good attention to detail. I started coming to her in August 2017 after a referral from a friend. It was a last minute appointment but she was kind enough to take the both of us in. I am a chronic nail biter and my nails were ugly unsuspecting stumps. She took me in, and taught me how to take better care of my nails. She does everything by hand so the care she provides is not damaging. She uses lotions, oils, and protectants to grow the natural nail. It is now the end of November and my nails look as if I have never bitten them. I keep coming back because I know she will always take care of my nails. I've only chosen one or two color options but she can also do beautiful designs!! Bottom line is that Joy is the best manicurist I have ever met. She solves nail problems, instead of treating the symptoms. My nails are then most besutifuk and strongest they have ever been. thank you so much Joy!!! read more

Yesterday was my second time here. Christine is a really sweet woman but both times I've been here things have gone array. The first time was a few months ago. Christine had apparently forgotten about my appointment and she came almost 40 minutes late. It was really chaotic. I went into the salon and asked a few of the women there about my appointment. No one knew what was going on and kept talking amongst themselves in Korean. I felt really ignored and disrespected. One person finally called Christine on her cell phone about it about 15 minutes later and they asked me to wait about 30 minutes for her to arrive. I was annoyed but it was in the summer so I had free time and wasn't too concerned. I also really liked my haircut, which she charged $35 for. I brought my friend with me this last time. I called ahead of time for a haircut for two. She told me to come in at 1:30. We get there and she did not get started on me until 2:15. I thought my last haircut was better than this time. After my haircut and wash was completed around 3, we thought that she would get to my friend next. However, apparently other customers were more important. There was one man that came without an appointment that she tended to instead. We asked her what was going on around 3pm and she said that she would get to my friend soon. Then she sat another man down and started cutting his hair! What is the point of making an appointment if you are not going to honor them? She did a hair treatment on my friend really quickly (which my friend did not ask for or want) as a time waster while she tended to the other man. Around 4pm we were getting really annoyed so we told her that we had to leave. She quickly sat my friend down and just chopped her hair really hastily while the hair was still soaking wet. It was clear that she was feeling stressed and rushing. It was awful and my friend told her to stop. Christine blew dry her hair halfway and my friend told her that she would just come back on Friday to finish the haircut then. We only came in for a simple trim and we were there for 4 hours. We left there with my average haircut done and my friend with half dried hair with uneven ends. Just because we are younger does not mean our time is not valuable. Why make appointments if they clearly do not matter? We both felt really disrespected and disappointed in our experience. My second haircut also somehow cost $50 even for the incredibly long wait. I felt really embarrassed bringing my friend here and will not be coming back. I really wanted to give Christine another chance because she is really sweet but the way we were treated is not acceptable. read more

I found this gem of a place through yelp and I initially called for prices of a haircut and balayage. The price was within my range (very reasonable) so I booked an appt. She gave me a trim with some layers and proceeded with the balayage. I showed her some pictures found on Pinterest and she was able to get what I wanted. I came in with black-dark brown hair and I never gotten my hair dyed so I was so nervous/scared, worried that it would break my hair. She was very cautious and very careful which I really did appreciate. She added treatment after washing out the dyes and styled it afterwards. They did a really poor job at perm. I get a perm on Saturday. I didn't wash it or blow it but two days later the curls almost gone. I told my hair designer and went back to her to check. She got my hair wet and then told me you still has your curls! And then she let me go. When I came home and let my hair air dry. The curls are still not obvious. I don't want to talk to them again and I will never go to this salon again. and I will tell my friends and colleagues not to. I spent almost 200 dollars for nothing. read more
