I have the BRCA gene and a very strong family history of breast cancer. For me it wasn't a question of if but rather when I would get it... I've been lucky enough to have had great care at UCLA for screening and risk reduction. Once I was done having and being able to breastfeed my children, my first priority was a prophylactic double mastectomy to make sure I was reducing my risk to ensure I could be around for my kiddos. That was a no brainer. The harder choice? What type of reconstruction (or any at all) to have that fit my life. Enter Dr Slack. We had SO many conversations about the pros and cons of each options, how many procedures each would entail, and so much more. I am so so grateful I found Dr. Slack to be a true partner throughout this whole process. In the end I opted for a DIEP flap, where tissue from my stomach was used to reconstruct breasts, which included quite complex blood vessel attachment and subsequent revision to ensure the shape was natural. I cannot say enough great things about how happy I am to have natural tissue (my weight fluctuates and I have concerns about foreign substances in my body). My kids snuggle me and I am able to feel comfortable in my body. In the process I ended up with a bit of a mommy makeover where my belly skin was improved post pregnancy. I'm now almost two years post-op and am able to retain sensation and have continued losing weight and my body adjusts normally. Just WOW! Had my breast reduction with Dr Slack 6 months ago. Was nervous and didn't know how to find the right doctor who would hear me and have my interest in mind when operating. Boy, did I luck out with Dr Ginger Slack! I knew I wanted to go to a female surgeon simply bc IMO women understand women better and have a keen eye as to the appropriate size, shape, etc. Also, women are just more meticulous. Full stop. And I am a terrible OCD and very particular, not the easiest of patients, being in the medical field myself. I was floored by Dr Slack's work! I call her a "Breast Architect"! I mean... Wow! She pulled off all the stops - the size, the shape, the nipple placement - all are perfect. But most importantly, I had no pain after the surgery, didn't even bother to take one pain pill. The stitches are starting to disappear (I have seen some gnarly scars on my friends after 6 months!). I feel like I had next to no recovery time. I followed Dr.Slack's orders to the tee and slept on my back for a couple of months. That's it. A small price to pay in exchange for no excruciating neck and back pain I had prior to the surgery. Dr Slack isn't just an amazing surgeon, she is a kind and attentive doctor who puts you at ease and helps you make your decision as based on facts, proper testing, and scientifically viable information. She honestly told me what she can do and what she doesn't do. For example, I asked if she could use a keyhole cut, but she was straight forward to tell me that she uses a different technique. On the other hand, I wanted to keep sensation in my nipples, and Dr Slack made sure to preserve all the tissue and vessel connectivity to my nipple. Her knowledge, her diligence and her magic hands is what you want in a surgeon. Dr Slack advocated for me with my insurance, prepared me psychologically for the surgery by explaining every step, answering my every questions, and putting me at ease during the procedure and after. And separate thanks to the anesthesiologist Dr Valery who did a magnificent job and to the entire UCLA plastic surgery team of highly trained medical professionals and staff who were all kind & knowledgeable, and who made my surgery go smoothly and without hiccups. I came to Dr Slack from NV, in hopes to finally reach a finish line. I'm a breast cancer survivor and I had 16 surgeries on my chest before meeting her. When I met her last year, I'd been sitting flat for almost a year, and had truly lost hope that I'd ever see the finish line. And most of all I thought she'd refuse my case thinking I was a difficult patient, something a prior surgeon said to me. What I got was someone that was kind, compassionate, and was more than willing to take on my case to get me to the end. I've had issues with things since my bilateral mastectomy and was making sure to cover all bases when I saw here for my preop. I asked her about a hematomas, likely hood, would I lose my flap, etc. I bet she never thought I'd end up with one. But when it happened, I couldn't have been in better hands. After 3 weeks in CA. And returning to NV, I've continued to have her support for anything I've needed. I still need phase 2 of my DIEP, for some very minor things. After everything I've been through the last 5 years. Dr. Slack recently performed a revision breast reconstruction for me after I had a double mastectomy following breast cancer, and I am super happy with the results. Part of my cancer treatment included radiation, which made my initial reconstruction (with temporary filler implants) become fairly lopsided, and my radiated breast sat visibly higher than the other one, which bothered me. During this revision procedure, she was able to fix literally ALL of the asymmetry, and did some fat transfer to hide any rippling of the skin due to implants. Not that having cancer is all butterflies and roses, but Dr. Slack's reconstruction definitely made the pill less bitter. Seriously, I think my breasts look better than they did before. After interviewing three different physicians regarding my breast explant surgery, I chose Dr. Slack. It was clear from the beginning that patient safety was her top priority. Dr. Slack took the time to thoroughly understand my medical concerns and recommended the safest and most thoughtful approach to treatment. Following a Breast MRI, I was diagnosed with a ruptured implant, which had initially been flagged due to an extremely high ferritin level found in a routine blood panel during my annual physical. The first plastic surgeon I consulted recommended an explant with immediate implant replacement. However, Dr. Slack explained that the safest path would be to first remove the implants, allow my body time to fully heal over the course of a year, and then reassess my ferritin levels before discussing any further treatment. I truly appreciated her thoroughness, honestly and the way she explained everything in a calm and reassuring manner. It gave me real confidence that I was in the right hands. I could not recommend Dr. Slack more! Her level of care and skill is unmatched and I couldn't have chosen a better surgeon. She was informative & honest from the beginning of the consultation process and guided me through each step with advice regarding insurance coverage, realistic result expectations, recovery, etc. For both my breast reduction & abdominal surgery my scarring is very minimal within less than a year of surgery and my pain level throughout each recovery was extremely manageable with Dr. Slack's help. Dr. Slack is the absolute best! I am 31 years old and was a size 30F/G before my breast reduction surgery. After our first consultation, I knew Dr. Slack was the doctor I wanted for my surgery. She took the time to listen to me and understand my goals going into the surgery. I appreciated how she answered all my questions matter-of-factly and set realistic expectations. I was a little nervous on the day of surgery, but Dr. Slack made me feel well taken care of and comforted. Also, knowing I was at UCLA, one of the top-rated hospitals in California, was very reassuring (more so than other surgical centers or clinics, IMO). The operation went smoothly, and the recovery was not too bad. The first few nights were rough (I experienced intense nausea from the anesthesia), but I messaged Dr. Slack on 'mychart,' and she immediately ordered medication to stop my nausea. Shoutout to Casey, who scheduled all my appointments and managed the pre-op paperwork/bills/insurance. While my insurance didn't cover the procedure, Casey worked with me over the phone to help me figure it out - she felt more like a friend by the end of my operation. I was referred to her by my breast oncology surgeon at UCLA. She designed and performed the Goldilocks closure I wanted after a double Mastectomy. We met 3 times before the procedure and discussed many options. I did not want traditional Reconstruction.
