Yes it's touristy and overpriced, but then again tourist don't pay for vacations to sit at a shack somewhere right?? You can always have your cappuccino at a bar for couple of euros to check out the ambiance, but if you choose to sit outside to get the view of Piazza Repubblica then a tea pot and tiramisu will run you 15 euros, but no rush, the staff are very nice. Very old and cool place. The set up is very cool as you eat on the bar area that is close to the food and you feel like a local. As the write up says, it is the oldest dessert café in Florence. The absolute WORST service we have received. The staff practice intentional neglect and ignore even the simplest requests. They only took half our party's order and said they would be back "in just a moment" and then 15 min later arrived - despite numerous gestures and requests for service. When the rest of our party ordered we asked for the bill directly and then had to wait an additional 20 min, despite many requests. Ahh yes, one of the oldest cafes in Florence! Actually the oldest, it;s in a great location and has a restaurant section too. We started with the cafe during the day since we were shopping and had great mini pastries. At night we decided to come back for dinner and it was very romantic. We had a table outside, great for people watching. I had the lasagna and it was very good. Not too cheesy and a lot of meat. The way I liked it, my boyfriend had veal and it was not very appealing. A very hot day in Florence, came across this restaurant which is fancy looking and right next to carousel. We sat outside and they have mist released from time to time. At first the service was not too good, waited for awhile to get a menu and have someone to attend us. Manager (who is in full black suit) came out and talked to the waiters on the floor, then everything are in order. We ordered rose wine, cappuccino, risotto and seafood pasta to start. Everything taste great and definitely recommend. The dessert was disappointed. We had Panna cotta and chocolate cake, with earl grey tea. The Panna cotta is way too creamy with no other flavor. Chocolate cake is too sweet with a lot of Nutella inside as filling. Price is on the expensive side as well. read more

Avoid unless you enjoy being treated rudely! We are tourists and stopped in to purchase pastries and coffee around 9:00am this morning. The person behind the counter was busy tidying up and wouldn't make eye contact (I've come to the conclusion they don't like tourists) or acknowledge our presence. Finally, I asked if we could order something and they put our items in a bag. They wouldn't give us the order until I went to another counter, stood in line and paid. I did this and then had to show my receipt to get my food. Repeat this same process to get coffee at a different counter literally two feet away by equally rude staff. My son and I then went to a small, empty table in the restaurant that was virtually empty. A staff member came over and started shouting at us in Italian...had no idea what he said but got the idea that we could only sit at the table if we paid higher prices for the items we ordered. Fine, so we went outside and sat at an empty table (there were about 20 with no customers in sight) and they came outside and made us leave that table also. We couldn't eat our food and drink our coffee for 10 minutes because they had to keep their 60 empty tables free for the zero customers that were there. Not going back...it's too easy to get better service and food at the hundreds of other restaurants in Florence. read more

Gilli's lived up to the hype! I was in Florence for three days and I visited every single day. I ordered a cappuccino from the bar. I also got to know the nice gentleman making my drink every single day, Pepe! He took great pride in his job and his customer service was amazing. His customer service was a huge part on why I returned every day but also the cappuccino was the best cappuccino I had my entire trip. I also tried the tiramisu, fresh, and delicious. I definitely recommend you come to Gilli's if you are visiting Florence for the first time. It's a staple of Florence and its been in business since 1733. The inside is beautiful and its an experience everyone should experience. Please tip whoever is serving you they appreciate it more than you could ever think. They truly are touched and the gesture goes a long way. I personally got whipped cream with my cappuccinos because of my simple tip & its the best whipped cream I have ever had. I am actually not a fan, but a little whipped cream and a sip of my cappuccino. Wow just wow heart eyes! read more

Tourist Haters for sure. We popped into Gilli when we were in Florence yesterday. The food and beverage is great. However, the service is so bad and the wait staff so inhospitable it destroyed any benefit the food provided. We were not given a menu with a variety of lunch items, as it appeared the local diners had. Instead we had a very limited and pricey menu. Lunch for 5 people was €200. We had to beg for the attention of the staff. Avoid this place whatever you do. Everyone else in Italy was polite, friendly, and helpful. The staff at Gilli thinks they are something special. Stopped at this location twice while in Florence for our wedding in the summer. The first time we went with 9 people for drinks and sat on the outside sitting area. The drinks were pretty good and the ambience was great also. The second day we brought all our wedding party for an informal rehearsal dinner and drinks on the outside area again and Maurizio, one of the workers there, was very nice and efficient at arranging seats for everyone (approx. 40 people). The service was very fast and the food was good. At the end of the service, Maurizio brought us a wedding gift from the cafe, which consisted on a book of the history of Gilli Cafe and a box of Jordan almonds. Our whole experience at this place was great, we would definitely visit again. read more

Worst customer service I have experienced in Italy. The server was rude, the woman behind the cake/pastries bar had an attitude and practically threw the receipt at me before walking away. Ok you're busy but seriously?? Cashier woman wasn't any better - kept yelling at me in Italian when I was taking some time to get changes from my wallet. No professionalism across the entire staff. We recently spend a few weeks in Europe and stopped in Florence for a wonderful visit. We visited this restaurant because it is modern, attractive and open. However, the experience was a low point. The waitress in the outside area of the restaurant was initially cordial. There didn't seem to be a clear understanding of English so I actually pointed to the items I wanted. The first course was wrong and she became quite gruff when I asked for the right course. It took about 1/2 an hour for the replacement (soup). The second course took another half hour and arrived cold. They stuck it in the microwave and she slammed the entree on the table. As we left, my partner asked, "Was it us?" Well, we have no way of knowing. We are polite and typically easy to serve. Ultimately, it doesn't matter if the experience came out of some type of bias or incompetence. The results were the same - a strikingly unpleasant lunch experience in the middle of paradise. read more

Terrible place. The woman at the register where I was paying was extremely rude. Overcharged me; when I insisted I wouldn't pay she grabbed the credit card receipt away from me and stuck it in the drawer. Then threw a different item on the counter and told me to take this instead. Jellies were really disappointing. We went to the outdoor cafe where it took about 45 minutes for someone to take our drink order and another 30 for them to deliver the drinks. All around bad experience. read more

We came here for a late dinner after most of the other restaurants and trattorias began shutting down their kitchens for the night and were blown away by how amazing and delicious everything was. We were seated in the covered outdoor patio with views all around of the square. Our server was superb, both extremely polite and knowledgeable when it came to food & wine recommendations. Gilli was certainly one of the unexpected surprises we encountered in Florence.... our only regret was not getting dessert. The prices were slightly higher here and portions a tad bit smaller than other places but the quality and taste was second to none. read more

Ah Gilli...I couldn't have enough of you while in Florence! I just loved the old-world feeling in the bar and the quaint designs inside. It is more expensive to pop in for a cappucino here than other places, but well worth it. The cappucino is fantastic and I would do anything to have a Gilli at home in the States! The pastries are delicious and you must indulge in a few different ones. Though a ritzy place, it's charm kept bringing me back the entire time I was in Florence. Remember to pay first, then bring your receipt over to the Barista and he will make you your cafe. Take a peek at all of the beautiful treats and novelty items they are selling. I had the gnocchi and my wife had the goat cheese ravioli and zucchini sauce. Mine was good. Not bad. But not amazing like the zucchini sauce ravioli!! Wow that stuff is amazing. You have to go and try it out!!! Service was good. They do charge €3 per person for service charge. But oh well. After a long voyage from the USA, settling into our hotel and a quick rest we want for a quick meal. We needed up spending quite a bit of time and enjoying our view as we enjoyed succulent cocktails and delicious food. Our waiter, Rapphaele, made our time there even more enjoyable.
