We dined at this location in late October during our visit to Florence. It was at the end of our stay in the city and we already had a long day and didn't really do a whole Lotta research for dinner. This is in the public square right by the carousel. There seems to be two very popular restaurants located here with a large outdoor seating that's in closed. We arrived really early and the location was empty as far as people having dinner but there were quite a few guests having drinks. Service was leisurely. It wasn't too slow or too fast. I don't recall what my husband had but I dine on a pumpkin risotto which was a seasonal entrée. It was good but nothing stood out as extraordinary. The prices are fair but you have to remember where this is located. You can probably down a little more economically away from the large tourist areas. We did enjoy our meal and probably would return and suggest to others. read more

This has been one of our favorite restaurants in Florence for several years. We've had attentive waiters, always. They are accommodating, even when we show up to eat before it's typically dinner time. The goat cheese rolled in pistachios with honey on the cheese plate is far and away the best food I've had in Italy. They have exquisite desserts, but we rarely have room for them after all the amazing food! This is also a great spot for happy hour cocktails before dinner. Yes, I agree with an earlier review, this IS THE iconic cafe of Florence. So, some places like this lose their way and quality deteriorates and some maintain their quality - these guys are still top notch. It is a very beautiful place to have a tea and some pastries. Even if you are sitting outside, do have a look inside: the decor is amazing, almost looks like a museum. Look up at the ceiling: beautiful. But this place is not only beautiful, it also serves nice Italian pastries: I had a chocolate tart which was quite good. My only regret is its ridiculous size. They also serve a great baba au rhum that my boyfriend highly recommends... For tea, they offer the "Via del té" teas which are very good. Either a tourist, or just living here, it is nice to stop by for a pastry and some tea - maybe not every weeks given how expensive it is. Last week I went to Caffe Gilli with three of my friends. We were very impressed. There is both indoor and outdoor seating. We sat inside, and the decor was beautiful. The glass windows of all of the chocolates and pastries looked delicious too. After looking around, we were seated right away. And for the duration of our experience, we had a terrific wait staff, and we were never waiting. One of my friends ordered the strawberry tarte while another ordered a Cafe Marocchino. The two said they had never had anything like this before. This caffe is pricy but totally worth it. This was my second time coming here, and the first time I Ordered their famous hot chocolate, it was the best hot chocolate I have ever had. Yes, Gilli is expensive but it's definitely a treat. Came here with friends for drinks and was not disappointed. I had the Sea Breeze, so refreshing and made just right. One friend had the mojito, she said it was great and the other had a glass of pinot noir. The drinks are a minimum 12 Euros a glass but it's worth the atmosphere and experience. We had a dessert drink, which none of us can remember the name of! But it had chocolate, dark rum, something else, and heavy cream on top. It was the perfect end to a liquid dinner. So if you're not into paying the price for the food, definitely go there for the drinks! read more

Very posh little area to come grab one of their many specialty cocktails and grab a little bite. We weren't going to order food here but they brought out little platters of mini dishes that were all very good. The little fried salty dough balls were my favorite though it was all tasty. We came here for a cappuccino and to meet with my Aunt and Uncle. We sat at a table in the piazza. It was starting to be a beautiful sunny day in Florence. We watched as big tour groups and locals with their small dogs walk by in the piazza. It's a perfect meeting place. Service was good. The cappuccino was the best I've ever had. In the U.S. I have never managed to finish one, but here I sipped it all down. Added a pinch or two of their sugar which was pure and looked like crushed crystals. Ate up the foam at the creamy end. Nice place to relax and people watch in the evening. Try to get a spot on one of their sofas! They have a large menu to choose from- we got the tiramisu and a cocktail. Very disappointed with our experience here. The gentleman outside the restaurant was very kind and had good things to say about the restaurant (of course). There's a little fine print on the bottom of the menu that said "cover charge" of 3.50 per person. The man said that families were excluded from this. Our receipt at the end still showed cover charge and the server was very annoyed with us asking to have it removed. The man in the front also promised us 10% off, which the bill did not reflect. We decided it was not worth our time to fight this one. The food was mediocre at best. Small portions and overall low rate taste. I ordered pasta with crawfish tails and it came with shrimp instead. Had a AWFUL experience at this restaurant the appetizers were good nothing amazing but not bad, but then came the dinner WOW who knew they could sever such terrible food in Florence. One person for the Filet which it was anything but it was more like a skirt steak, another got the Hamburger which was so over mixed it was so tuff it was not even edible, another got a Caesar salad to have some thing light the dressing was disgusting and had to just use the balsamic that was on the table to eat a few bites, I had the eggplant tortellini which wasn't bad but nothing to be excited about I asked if the could add grilled shrimp which he said yes but they didn't do. The waiter was unbelievably RUDE laughed when we asked for decaf coffee then gave us regular which had us up half of the night, he never came back to check on us we went with out another bottle of water throughout our dinner and no refills on wine or drinks if any sort. When I spoke to the manager he was apologetic but only kept asking us to come back tomorrow and he would make it up to us, like we were waiting another dinner at this place, didn't offer anything else except some week old desserts to take with us which were disgusting. With so many amazing places in Florence to eat don't get sucked into this place because they are the oldest coffee and dessert restaurant in Florence old doesn't mean good in this case. read more

While you are in Italy, you can smell the history in every aspect and Gilli Cafe is one the places that you should visit if you are in Firenze. Gilli Cafe had been opened in 1733 and it is Florence's oldest and most historic café's in the city center. It is located in the corner of Pizza della Repubblica which is full of tourists and people. When you enter Gilli Cafe you are embraced with the charming atmosphere of the place with its classy decoration, the elegant staff, the qualified ambiance with all delicious desert and coffee. You are surrounded with colored walls, Murano lamps, frescoed ceiling and arches. There is a huge cornered bar in the space which keep Gilli as it was in the early 1900's. Of course the place is not cheap but it worths to have that experience. In my opinion there is no need to have a lunch or dinner there which I assume costs a lot but I recommend you to pay for your coffee and desert at the cashier and have your coffee at the bar which is much more enjoying and certainly cheaper. You only pay for the coffee and the desert not the service and the table. The cafe is always crowded and there is always a line at the cashier but it worth to wait a little to try the variety of pastries that seem very seductive and the experience the interior environment. We had tiramisu and coffee after our lunch. The tiramisu was delicious however it was the first time that I had tiramisu made with mille-feuille pastry. read more

So on my last day in Florence I decided to have lunch at one of their oldest restaurants Gilli. I liked the location, relaxing atmosphere and the weather was perfect for the outdoor sitting. The place wasn't that busy and a waiter told me to take any table I liked. I picked one and kept enjoying the day. 30 min later I started to wonder how long would it take them to bring the food if it takes them forever to bring a menu. I started looking around and one of the waiters asked if I was ready to place an order. I said I wasn't as I had not seen the menu. He took a menu from a nearby table, handed it to me and ran away. Thinking "at last" I opened the menu hoping to see a variety of pastas, steaks and seafood options. Nope. The menu was a dessert and wine menu. I looked around to make sure I am at the place where they do serve regular food. And yes, some folks were chewing their pasta while staring me down. I looked for a waiter, no luck. The guy has dissolved into a thin air. When I got up to leave the older gentleman asked me if a waiter had come. Errrrr.... kinda... I left and went to eat at the place across the square, where customer service is much better and food is served much faster. Now I am releasing the stress caused by inattentive staff of Gilli by writing this review and giving the Gilli restaurant a stink eye from across the square.
