I abstain from drinking these days, and even when I was drinking way back when, I was never a "wine…read moreconnoisseur" (although I enjoyed the wine "high," as well as the taste, the hangover was brutal), or any kind of "connoisseur." I wanted to ask my old friend from high school, who works as a psychiatric social worker and IS a wine connoisseur (I should mention that he loves the wine store in Princeton and always buys a few bottles when we periodically get together in that city), what he thinks of this particular store (if, indeed, he's ever patronized it), but I wasn't able to get him on the phone (he lives in Teaneck but his family is in Bernardsville) in time for this review. Oh well... It gets 5-stars from me because I do still buy wine as gifts for people I know. It's conveniently located near where I live, its prices don't seem prohibitively expensive to me (I like to buy whatever "good wine" is recommended to me, and I never have the expectation that it's going to be cheap), and the staff I've encountered here is friendly and helpful. When my father was alive, I'd buy him a bottle of Knob Hill Whiskey. No wine for Dad! He was always delighted. In January, it was my birth mother's birthday. She likes rose' wine. I asked the young man at the counter if he could recommend a good bottle of rose'; he did, and my birth mother later expressed satisfaction with it. A week ago, it was the birthday of an old friend. She's Jamaican, and back in the day, she would throw an enormous summer party in her backyard with every kind of Jamaican food you can imagine (it was at these parties that I acquired a taste for home-made Sorrel liquor). She's had some health issues in recent years, and has recovered heroically, but the enormous summer parties are a remnant of the past. This was to be a small birthday party with family and close friends, and I was honored to be invited. I'm not a wine connoisseur, as mentioned, but I wanted a high-quality wine to bring with me. The same young man at the counter, friendly and engaging, recommended several, and I ultimately bought the bottle that he said was a personal favorite, one that he buys for himself when he has wine. Other alcoholic drinks and beverages are available for purchase here, although wine is obviously the focus (after all, it's not called "Select Vintage Spirits and... oh yeah...wine too..."). If I were still drinking, and a regular patron, I suppose the prices might be more problematic for me. But, for my limited alcohol needs, Select Vintage rates 5 stars. (Funny story...well, to me anyway...about my friend's birthday party. I was the only non-Jamaican in attendance, and one of the few not drinking wine or other assorted alcoholic drinks. One of the guests, walking toward the kitchen, inquired, "Any more ice for the drinks?" One of my friend's family members raised his head, looked around rapidly as if panic-stricken, and said loudly, "ICE? Did I hear someone say ICE? Where? Where?!?" Well, it made me laugh. Maybe you had to be there...)

I noticed the gift selections they have and they offered me a tasting demonstration or organic liquors. Delicious! The selection of wine, beer, and spirits are thorough and some that you can't find in the average liquor store. Yes, they are a tad bit more expensive than other liquor stores but it's a small store. If you're looking for a great gift or unusual finds, this store is a great choice

If you're anywhere near Somerville and not shopping at Liquor Saver, you're doing it wrong…read more This place hits that rare balance between serious selection and actually enjoyable shopping. You walk in and immediately feel like someone behind the scenes really cares about what's on the shelves. It's not just volume, it's curated. From everyday staples to high-end bottles you usually have to hunt for, they've got it dialed. Huge shoutout to Pearl and Dhyan. You can tell this isn't just a business to them, it's personal. Pearl has an incredible eye for what people actually want, not just what distributors are pushing. Dhyan made the new store perfect! Prices are competitive, but more importantly, the value is there. The way they organize sections makes it easy to discover something new without feeling overwhelmed. Their premium selection is especially impressive, you don't expect to find that level of depth in a neighborhood store. This is the kind of place you become a regular at without even realizing it. Thoughtful, well-run, and a clear step above the typical liquor store. Easily the best store in New Jersey!

The best place in the area for beer, wine, or spirits - and a great staff…read more Beer: the selection is diverse and deep. Still want some summers even though the pumpkins/Oktoberfests are out? Shouldn't be a problem. Good selection of cold items, too. I find pretty much anything I want to find here - and more because they do enough business with vendors to get a few of the rare items. I see below someone was upset they couldn't get 2 of a rare item. Why? Because this location has regulars like me that ask them to save a bottle when it comes in. And they do - without asking for anything in return. If I ran the business, I would save special items for my regulars, too. I am sorry you can't get what you want when you show up for the first time but this is a perk of remaining loyal to a vendor. Plus, I always enjoy talking with the beer guys to narrow down my list for the day/week ( I stop in multiple times/week), and they enjoy the chats as well. Wine: one of our first stops when we moved to the area was to get some help choosing the wine for our rehearsal dinner. The owner helped us pick it all out, taking the time to listen to our likes and wants and pair it up. This is what earned our loyalty. And when we gave a price range there was zero pushback, it was part of the fun and challenge. Fast forward a couple of years and we exchange greetings every time I come into the store. When I am looking for a wine, he knows what we like and our price range. It's always a fun experience and we learn a lot, too. I was interested in trying a different prosecco brut than our usual and asked to factor in how much my wife loves Veuve Clicquot champagne; I was presented 3 options in my usual price range and chose the lesser-known brand from the Cristal producer. Had no clue there even was one but this is the kind of things you learn from a staff that enjoy their jobs. To address another user comment, maybe not everything in the store has a price on it almost everything does; items on the top shelf don't because they are found elsewhere below so be sure to look around. Can't find it? Ask, I always do and every single person working here grabs it and comes back to me with the price. It's a non-issue, really. I've been there when new beer arrives and I see the individual bottles not labeled yet so I ask and - boom - I find... and am among the 1st to walk out with the new Evil Twin or latest Exit from Flying Fish. Spirits: I am a scotch guy first and have to say this place has the best selection of single malts in the area at most often the best prices (and when not the best, definitely fair). I shop around for whiskey to try to get my hands on various things and I always wind up coming back here, the selection is just that good. Sure, I can probably find a certain item $5 cheaper on sale out in Chester but it isn't worth it when it builds the relationship here. In addition to the owner, there are 2 whiskey guys here that enjoy the chat. We always have a good exchange and a laugh or 2. I was able to pick up some 2015 Cairdeas before it disappeared and get some Bruichladdich at the best price around. Plus, as a regular, I also get a couple of special hard-to-find items saved for the wife and me when the come in - I would mention it here but we were asked not to shout it from the rooftops. I also enjoy tequila & mescal, and a particular staff member always comes out to chat on these and share some stories. Lastly, my in-laws are in Europe so we always bring a couple of gifts with us when we go, always a small batch bourbon. I hate the stuff and have to rely on the staff to steer us right and they have never let us down. Last trip we took a Four Roses that was well received. Interesting twist - this Buy Rite has since had their own bottling of the stuff. Overall, this is definitely the best place in the area for beer, wine, and spirits. Yes, I have been to Gary's and go there 1/mo or so but mostly for cheese, bread, oil, vinegar, and the like. It's across town to me and I find their prices to average higher for beer and whiskey, with only an average selection of spirits. That being said, it's a great store whose strength is food and wine. And so is the Wine Library a few towns away. Still, the Buy Rite deserves to be your regular destination.
