I abstain from drinking these days, and even when I was drinking way back when, I was never a "wine connoisseur" (although I enjoyed the wine "high," as well as the taste, the hangover was brutal), or any kind of "connoisseur." I wanted to ask my old friend from high school, who works as a psychiatric social worker and IS a wine connoisseur (I should mention that he loves the wine store in Princeton and always buys a few bottles when we periodically get together in that city), what he thinks of this particular store (if, indeed, he's ever patronized it), but I wasn't able to get him on the phone (he lives in Teaneck but his family is in Bernardsville) in time for this review. Oh well... It gets 5-stars from me because I do still buy wine as gifts for people I know. It's conveniently located near where I live, its prices don't seem prohibitively expensive to me (I like to buy whatever "good wine" is recommended to me, and I never have the expectation that it's going to be cheap), and the staff I've encountered here is friendly and helpful. When my father was alive, I'd buy him a bottle of Knob Hill Whiskey. No wine for Dad! He was always delighted. In January, it was my birth mother's birthday. She likes rose' wine. I asked the young man at the counter if he could recommend a good bottle of rose'; he did, and my birth mother later expressed satisfaction with it. A week ago, it was the birthday of an old friend. She's Jamaican, and back in the day, she would throw an enormous summer party in her backyard with every kind of Jamaican food you can imagine (it was at these parties that I acquired a taste for home-made Sorrel liquor). She's had some health issues in recent years, and has recovered heroically, but the enormous summer parties are a remnant of the past. This was to be a small birthday party with family and close friends, and I was honored to be invited. I'm not a wine connoisseur, as mentioned, but I wanted a high-quality wine to bring with me. The same young man at the counter, friendly and engaging, recommended several, and I ultimately bought the bottle that he said was a personal favorite, one that he buys for himself when he has wine. Other alcoholic drinks and beverages are available for purchase here, although wine is obviously the focus (after all, it's not called "Select Vintage Spirits and... oh yeah...wine too..."). If I were still drinking, and a regular patron, I suppose the prices might be more problematic for me. But, for my limited alcohol needs, Select Vintage rates 5 stars. (Funny story...well, to me anyway...about my friend's birthday party. I was the only non-Jamaican in attendance, and one of the few not drinking wine or other assorted alcoholic drinks. One of the guests, walking toward the kitchen, inquired, "Any more ice for the drinks?" I believe they are under new ownership and a brother and sister run this store. I went in one night and started chatting with them. They were extremely friendly and knowledgeable! I noticed the gift selections they have and they offered me a tasting demonstration or organic liquors. Delicious! The selection of wine, beer, and spirits are thorough and some that you can't find in the average liquor store. Yes, they are a tad bit more expensive than other liquor stores but it's a small store. I am always amazed at the thoughtful selection of wines utilizing organic sustained farming, the variety of craft beers and their liquor selections. I stopped in here for a quick bottle of wine for dinner the other night. It's a very nice store with lots of friendly people working there. The selection was decent and the prices weren't great. I have a friend in the business that explained to me that some stores like this use obscure brands because they can mark up the wines at a higher margin. I have also been told that the rent for stores in that location is very high, so the store charges more money for their products. read more

I guess if you're a person of color, you get followed around non stop and have a guy QUIETLY hover over you AFTER YOU'VE TOLD HIM YOU ARE BROWSING THE LARGE SELECTION WHICH NATURALLY TAKES TIME. Last summer I dropped in off I-78 heading back home to Pa from New York. Found this store and purchased a decent bottle for a decent price. The second time I thought their selection was strictly higher priced (notice I did not say better wines). The young sales clerk tried to help but didn't have the knowledge. A woman behind the counter was jabbering with a coworker. I suspect she may have been the owners. Total condescending snot nose yuppies. I did not find what I wanted and will not be back. read more

Yes, this place is pretty good. The beer selection is actually much better than I thought it would be. Even though the place is relatively small, they seem to have a pretty good selection. I was able to pick up a hard to find Sam Adams Rebel IPA here the other day. Wine and liquor selection is not huge, so be warned about that. For being in a higher end strip mall in Basking Ridge, the prices are actually pretty good. I paid $9 for the Sam Adams six pack which is good. I come here from time to time. It's not the most convenient place to where I live but it's a solid spot. The staff is always helpful and the place isn't usually very packed. That's a plus. I was at this place May 14th, the day Anne wrote her review. I got a 4 bottle linen bag with handles, so they do give them out. They had a great bourbon tasting going on and I tried a couple and bought a great bottle of Michter's, one I have not tried, and it was fairly priced and wonderful as promised by the shopkeeper. I also bought a bottle of my favorite Ripasso (one I'm sure Anne is not familiar with) for $17.99 - the same price I pay at a large discount chain. Their prices are very fair, but I guess if you're looking for E&J Gallo or big brand fruity wines, then maybe Costco or the Internet has a better price. If Anne is the woman who was checking out right in front of me that night, I understand why she may not have received the high quality carrying case I got. When you walk around the store with your Vivino app snapping pictures and complaining out loud to everyone how the prices on the Internet are cheaper, then maybe you don't get the best service. You could have ordered that inexpensive bottle on the Internet that night, and saved your $2, and perhaps the mailman might have it for you by this weekend. It's ridiculous to make assumptions about the store's pricing practices simply because you are unfamiliar with the wines they carry. You could have asked for some assistance like I did and been pleasantly surprised to try something new and wonderful. The staff is very knowledgeable and helpful, and the prices are very fair here. I hate to see some app wielding millennial, with a less than novice understanding of wine, trash a very respectable and hardworking small business. Anne, if you were not the girl in the bad 80's dress that night snapping photos on your Vivino app, then this rant was meant for someone else. This is not your typical liquor store! I actually look forward to the shopping experience. Whether I am trying to find a wine that is delicious and safe for my daughter with celiac, or the newest high end spirit to entertain with, these guys are extremely knowledgeable and helpful. I always enjoy the interaction...humorous banter and friendly, informative, enthusiastic exchanges. I go out of my way to shop here.
