Good south side bar to have parties or after parties. Plenty of seats and drink choices. If you are having a big party, parking might get hard. The neighborhood around this bar is permit parking because of Saint Xavier. You can park in specific Saint Xavier lot but if there's a game going on then you will have some trouble finding parking. We had our son's first birthday here and cannot say enough good things about Gilhooleys. The manager Jim was incredibly helpful and easy to work with. The staff the day of was amazing and friendly. The food (we did the brunch option) was so delicious. We got so many compliments about the food and the space from our guests. Gilhooley's has the potential to be a gathering spot with it's large outdoor patio and "pub in a box" interior, but no one seems to be gathering here. We were here on a Saturday night and there were only a smattering of people in the place. Pretty quiet for a weekend. I laughed that they actually carded us - although I guess this could be considered a "college bar" given the proximity to St. Xavier University but there was not a student in sight. There is a pool table in the "den" and darts in the back but no one was playing either when we were there. And the whole "vibe" of the place lacked a friendliness that I expect when I go to grab a beer at a neighborhood place. Even the bartender acted like he didn't want to be there and was just going through the motions. We sat at the bar had a beer (cheap) and waited to see if it was going to pick up. They had a good flavor, but they were a little limp instead of crispy. I had the cheddar broccoli soup, which was delicious! I am a bit of a soup aficionado, so that is high praise. I also got the Mt. Greenwood burger, which was very good, and enormous; if I had eaten at all before we went there, I probably wouldn't have been able to finish it. I love carrot cake, and Gilhooley's is the best carrot cake I've had in Chicago and 'burbs. I am not kidding. (I saw another reviewer say that their carrot cake was frozen but I don't care!) The rest of the food was fine--I had a chicken sandwich on a surprise pretzel bun (yum!) with fresh fruit (actually, the fruit was really good for some reason) and the service was decent, but the carrot cake is why this place is getting four stars. I am working around there now, but Gilhooley's doesn't open until 3 p.m., so luckily, since I'm usually done early, I won't be tempted too often to go there for carrot cake. read more

I told her I was new to Oak Lawn and she suggested a health food store I can buy sprouted bread. I went again lol, I asked John (manager) when the kitchen closed and he came and checked with me to ensure I placed my order. This was my first time at Gilhooley's and it was really good. I have the Portabella mushroom sandwich it was done perfectly. The establishment offers inside and outside dining experience. It is a unique saloon. Dress is casual. They have a great waitstaff that was very informative and friendly. I highly recommend this place and will be back again. read more

This is a great looking bar, but besides the aesthetics it leaves much to desire. The manager(s) are constantly standing at the bar looking angry, stressed, and watchful. It's very annoying and creates a weird atmosphere. The bartenders/servers are pretty good, but could do with a little less socializing with the regulars. They charge more if you pay with a card rather than pay cash. This isn't some ma and pop corner bodega, quit it with that stuff and stop trying to recoup your transaction fee, it's petty. I only go here because it's close to home, and even then it's seldom. The managers need to lighten up and create a better atmosphere. If I wanted someone to stare at me angrily while I had a beer or two I would go home and sit with my wife. read more

As a college bar, this is pretty upscale. I mean, it's no dive bar; you can converse without worrying about shouting. The downsides of this bar is that it does last call pretty early and can be pretty pricey. Does it stand apart from other bars in the area? Not so much. I have a digestive disorder that allows me to eat only small quantities of food and I went to gilhooleys as a student of saint xavier who has given gilhooleys my business for years. today out of the hundreds of times I have ordered off the kids menu, the waiter and manager said I couldn't order off the kids menu. for a restaurant with extremely subpar food, watered down drinks, very unappealing atmosphere, and awfully boring weekend-night events, you would think they would take whatever business they could get. I can confirm that without saint xavier university, gilhooleys would have been closed down YEARS ago. even if you are paying with dining dollars, I would spend your money elsewhere with actual appetizing food and a fun atmosphere. My family had a retirement party in Gilhooley's party room this weekend. Their catering was delicious We had the typical foods (lasagna, beef, chicken, potatoes and salads) but their recipes are great! The server could not have been more attentive and pleasant. The party room is awesome in that it is decorated in a "grand saloon" style and has an adjoining pool table room which is available to the party-goers. This area was also good for the kids to run around in. The main room seats up to 40, so it's great for small parties, showers, etc. All of the guests really enjoyed both the atmosphere and the food. If I could I'd give this a 4 for service. Went on a Thursday night--$1 burgers and $1.50 domestic bottles, can't argue w/that. The burgers were really good and not small either. We sat at a table right inside the door and were immediately asked what we'd like to drink. The service did get a little spotty as it got more crowded but never what I'd say bad. We also ordered the appetizer sampler, it was, well, not that great. Obviously microwaved food--onion strips, wings, tenders and tater skins, the burgers were way better, and way cheaper. I've been here twice since my friend goes to St. Xavier and brought me here both times. The service is not even respectable, since they had about 3 waiters on a Saturday night and I even overheard a table next to us say they were there for 30 minutes with no service whatsoever. Their menu is quite odd, with appetizers more like entrees and they always seem to be out of something (my friend mentioned to me that they were out of lemons one day- at a bar!). I like it but I wanna LOVE it! I think this place has a lot of potential because of a pretty cool set-up. There is a bar in the middle with a crowd on both sides...but one side is elevated above the other. There are darts to play when there isn't a band and the food isn't bad either. My problem is the lack of energy on most nights. Why don't more people go here?? There is a University right across the street and not another decent bar close by so I don't get it. This is without a doubt one of my favorite bars on the south side. I enjoy it for a number of reasons. The atmosphere is great because its not overcrowded and you don't have to yell when your hanging out with friends. I also love their beer selection and they have great daily specials as well. they always have the seasonal Sam Adams and goose island beers as well as good old standbys. also they are one of the few bars in the area to car goose island green line. one of my personal fav's. now for the food. they have a great menu that far surpasses typical bar food.I love the firecracker shrimp as well as the pig skins ( potato skins filled with pulled pork). i think if you're looking for a great night out then i truly hope you try out Gilhooleys. read more
