I had the Pork knuckle which was a whole roasted pork knuckle with home-made dark beer sauce and potato dumpling. We also had the Crispy roast pork with home-made dark beer sauce and potato dumpling. Both were excellent and the beer was also quite good. I had their signature wheat beer and then an Oktoberfest beer (because why not) and really enjoyed it. I do think I liked their signature wheat beer better, and would've gotten another one of those over the Oktoberfest one.

It was mislabeled as vegan but with dairy, so I had to get some clarification on what it actually was, but once they confirmed that it didn't have dairy, all good. Of the like half a dozen potato dishes, only one was vegan, which was sort of disappointing, but it was fine. There were some other veggies and a vegan salad, plus bread. So I definitely didn't leave hungry at all. Unfortunately, there were no vegan dessert options, but my colleagues at least got to enjoy theirs. All in all, I had a really nice time. The lack of many options to choose from made me a bit sad, but luckily the vegan dinner option was mega good (and places that serve mushrooms as the vegan option should take note). I'm by no means a teetotaler, but I'm much less of a beer enthusiast than I was in my college days. Embarrassingly enough, I wasn't even sure what a Weizenbock was exactly. If you're like me, fear not as I'll briefly explain. It's a strong German wheat beer that mixes the rich, fruity, and spicy notes of a Hefeweizen (traditional wheat beer) with the robust maltiness of a Bock, creating a full-bodied, flavorful ale with a higher alcohol content (7.1% ABV in this specific case) and a signature fluffy head. Their flavor typically features bready, toasty, and fruity (banana, clove) aromas and flavors, with darker versions adding caramel and deeper malt notes. According to the bottle, Ayinger's brew is advertised as a pale, robust, spicy wheat ale. The spicy description turned me off, but while I could detect a hint of it, it was not overly so. Pouring the bottle into my glass revealed a hazy, pale golden color. It was a bit dry, boozy, but extremely drinkable and smooth. Coming from a guy that doesn't like many beers, this was a good one. What's fun is that this restaurant is also a micro-brewery (hence the "brauerei" in the name) and makes a 19% bier called "Alligator". It's a dangerous animal, smooth and creamy and betraying none of the violence that will emerge after a couple of them. Because I was driving, I only got a sip or two and tried the dark ale and the Weiss instead. I prefer stronger tasting Weiss than what was available. The dark ale is nice, but I wouldn't go out of my to seek this bier out, honestly. So, on to what really impressed me! So, because I was in Germany, I wanted true German cuisine and König von Flandern didn't let me down. I ordered the Schwabenteller platter, which was composed of roasted shoulder of pork, livercheese, and crusty roast along with Swabian potato noodles and sauerkraut. My roasted shoulder of pork was about as good as I've ever had. I'm not a pork guy, but I'm in southern Germany, so I had either learn to like pork or walk away from the cuisine. The shoulder was SO very good that I cannot begin to describe it other than to say it was savory and soul-satisfying in a way that nothing other bacon can bring! The crusty roast was a delight as well, but I could eat the shoulder all day, every day. I'm not a huge fan of liverwurst, but I even enjoyed the livercheese! How can you go wrong with real sauerkraut from a real German restaurant, warm and acidic, but neither overwhelming or sharp like "American" kraut is. Both of my companions enjoyed their meals as well, but they didn't give me much to quote or share, but clearly they were both satisfied. Now, keep in mind that this may be one of the very first English reviews for the Augsburg area, but I have to say, I was VERY satisfied with this visit and I highly recommend König von Flandern!
