Outside/parking lot

I was getting gas nearby and needed to pick up some items for a potluck I was going to, so I came to this Giant location. There was plenty of parking in the shopping center, which included a lot of other shops such as a Petsmart and a Five Below, among others. Perusing the aisles, it looked like there was a pretty wide selection of dairy and meat substitute products. I was mainly looking for a raw veggie tray and some hummus to bring to my potluck. For the veggie trays, they had a good selection at the front of the store in the produce section; the trays came in a couple sizes, and you could get them either with or without ranch dressing (I opted for without, as I was planning to buy hummus separately). They also had some fruit trays, although I didn't get one. I was a little bewildered to not find hummus in the store, since my impression is that hummus has become one of those ubiquitously trendy items that all grocery stores carry now. I went to 3 different refrigerated parts of the store, including the dressings/dips section, and didn't see it. I didn't bother to ask an employee for help since I came across a veggie/herb dip that proclaimed to be made of "beans and vegetables" which struck me as being acceptably close enough to hummus, so I bought that instead and didn't get any complaints. There were a couple self checkout lanes and what looked like only 1 or 2 manned checkout lanes open at the time. The cashier in my lane was pretty efficient and scanned the store card for me since I didn't have a Giant card of my own. Overall, a passable Giant missing a few obvious items.

They had open pet chicken barbecue and pulled pork. Also, they are giving out free donuts (glazed or powdered cream) and lemonade. My hubby wanted me to get him a powdered cream donut so he was disappointed when I brought it home and there was no cream filling. Fortunately, the coconut custard doughnut that I purchased was amazing. They did not skimp on the coconut or the custard for mine. Since my husband did not have any cream in his, I took some out of my doughnut, and it was still plentiful. I also got us two chicken halves, and a medium size of the Amish macaroni salad. I purchased a medium of the crustless chicken pot pie for myself. We both loved our chicken. It reminded us of the smoked chicken at Smoky Glen Farm. He thought the macaroni salad was sweet for his liking but since I have a sweet tooth, I loved it. I gave him a bite to try the chicken pot pie and it reminded him more of a chicken dumpling. I would've enjoyed it more if it had a crust. It's funny that my parents have lived in Germantown for decades, and I never shopped there.

It was the kind of place where you could wander with a tray, try a little of everything, and always leave happy (and full). Beyond the food, it had an atmosphere you don't find often anymore: a casual bustle, families sharing dishes, shoppers taking a break from the aisles, everyone drawn together by the smells and flavors. That's why it was such a loss when the owner closed it down. The whole community misses the variety, the warmth, and the incredible value the food court offered. It wasn't just a spot to grab a bite, it was part of our weekend routine, a place to bring visiting friends, a taste of home for many. Thank you to everyone who ran the food court for all those years. Your hard work and hospitality made Great Wall more than a supermarket; you made it a gathering place. You're dearly missed!

The floors, perhaps intentionally, just look dirty as you walk into the store. The food is of good quality. The prices are reasonable. ‼ THE RACISM I EXPERIENCED AT SAFEWAY IN GERMANTOWN WAS RIDICULOUS ‼…read more I experienced something yesterday at the Safeway on Germantown Road that I feel needs to be addressed. I was at self-checkout purchasing a sale item when the digital coupon was not coming off correctly. I asked for assistance because the advertised promotion was not reflecting. The seafood department "manager" came over to assist. She had her baby on her hip while working. Instead of apologizing or calmly explaining what was happening with the promotion, she cursed at me and said, "Btch, you got me fcked up," and then walked away. Of course I became upset and irate because I had just been cursed at by an employee when I was simply asking for assistance. The store manager then came over and told me, "If you don't calm down, I'm not going to help you." I explained that I was extremely upset because of how the seafood employee had just spoken to me. Instead of addressing what happened or resolving the issue, the store manager walked away. At that point, I walked out of the store. What makes this even more disturbing is that the self-checkout employee and another customer came up to me afterward and said they heard how the employee spoke to me. I believe I was treated differently and unfairly because I am a Black woman. I have experienced situations in Germantown before where I felt I was being treated as though I was suspicious or a thief, but this interaction was completely unacceptable. ‼ I AM CONTACTING SAFEWAY/ALBERTSONS CORPORATE AND I EXPECT THIS INCIDENT TO BE INVESTIGATED ‼ I want the employee's conduct addressed, I want management's response investigated, and I want the pricing/coupon issue reviewed as well. This isn't about getting a coupon. It's about how I was treated while trying to get help.

As the name suggests, there are specialty food items from all over Europe. While I saw some things like English teas, German cookies, and a few Greek items, it seemed like the majority of the offerings were from Eastern Europe. I think over half of the products had labels in Cyrillic alphabet with no translation on them in any fashion, so some things you just gotta know what it is or ask the staff. I saw a lot of things from Georgia and Ukraine, but I think I saw other products from that region (Russian, Lithuanian, Macedonian, etc.). The staff were very friendly, and cheerfully assisted me with some of the pastries we purchased. One had a nice balance of flaky pastry and fruit filling while the blintzes seemed a bit underwhelming. I also picked up a bottle of dessert wine and Children #1 and #2 picked out some candies that caught their eye. The inside is clean and somewhat small but easy to navigate. There is music playing (I don't know what language; I want to say Russian but in today's climate that could be a charged statement. Just want to say it positively adds to the vibe). Worth checking out, if you want to explore a product you might not otherwise be exposed to or if you want to find a specialty European item that you've been missing.
