Much easier to use and more affordable service than Turo. It is super easy to use because you can reserve and unlock a car within 15 minutes without interacting with the owner. Sometimes I do meet owners though, especially during drop off because they're waiting to use their car when I get back; the couple times this has happened it has been a friendly experience with them asking me if there's anything they can provide in the car that would have been useful on my trip. I have had a couple bad experiences. One time I tried to rent a Tesla Model 3, but it turned out the owner was driving it and hadn't blocked out the time on the app. So Getaround automatically assigned me a similar price vehicle nearby. I wanted to drive an electric car, but they assigned me a gas powered BMW M3. While a great car, it wasn't what I was looking for. So I cancelled the trip and they refunded me the full amount. My partner got in a minor fender bender while using a Getaround car and we have yet to hear from Getaround after a few days. There was no clear procedure to file a claim on their website. There is no way to contact any actual person to get this moving nor any phone number to call. Meanwhile, the owner of the vehicle and the person she bumped needs their car fixed and all we can tell them is we are waiting for Getaround to get a hold of us. Terrible, terrible customer service. Parts started falling off the Venza and I filed a claim with pictures showing the dashboard metal piece had fallen of,f the end piece of the top corner was coming loose and there is a wire hanging from the lighter port. I call AAA and they not only jump the car but tells me that the system in the car is draining the battery and that I don't need a new battery I just need to have the battery recharged to the proper levels. (AAA saved me $400 on a new battery) I drive off from the shop and there is a wire burning smell and it is epic bad. this is all so crazy Michal at getaround talked bad to me and told me the car was not working because of something I did, and that their system shows that I'm not properly operating their app. I ask to speak with a supervisor, and he tells me the supervisor can't and won't do no more than he is. Now to top it all off getaround is sending me a bill to pay them for the devices and Michal says I can take the cars and have the device uninstalled and I said, where and he said the same car toy that Messed it up in the first place. all 3 cars will not start and getaround keeps sending me tickets talking about the issue is solved and closed. Update: I forgot to update this a while back. Getaround ended up refunding that $100. It just took a while and was pretty frustrating. My first review goes to Getaround because of the frustrating experience I've had recently. I decided to try it out, thinking it would be a great way to receive some supplemental income. Getaround told me I would receive the Connect in my car for three months for free, while I tested it out. After one month, I realized it wasn't for me. I called Getaround to cancel my subscription. I spoke to a representative, cancelled it and they said someone will contact me to remove the Connect. I've called multiple times and still no response other than one phone call saying they'll email me (still haven't received that email). Last week, I checked my bank account and I was charged over $100 from Getaround, not sure why but I'm assuming to cover the cost of the Connect (that I already cancelled). I've called, emailed, and no one has an answer for me. Currently, I'm out $100 and the Connect is still attached. My experience with Getaround has been pretty frustrating. read more

They stated that they were unable to verify my identity and then refused to elaborate on what the process they use is of verifying someone's identity stating that for confidentiality reason they could not share details. Our car was filthy when we picked it up!! We had to clean it out ourselves, even took it through the car wash. We extended our trip through the app and got a confirmation email, our CC was charged too. I even tried to reach out to the owner of the car but, I didn't get a response. When we dropped the car off, the people who reserved it after us showed up and they were pissed! They told us that, "we had been driving around on their dime!" They even were "chasing us down" via the cars location on the app. They had called customer service and were told that "we were supposed to return the car the day prior!!" They were also told they would not be refunded for the time they had lost due to us still having the car and that they were going to charge us a $50 late fee!!! It was a mess!! I have been car-free for six months. I use Getaround as a supplement to Zipcar. I commute by bike and public transit mostly, but use Getaround and Zip for errands, nearby getaways, and things that are too much of a hassle to get to by public transit or bike. The thing I like most about Getaround is that is definitely more affordable than Zipcar. Also, I like how there are no mileage restrictions (you can't go more than 180 miles a day with Zipcar). I find it actually easier to reserve a car through Getaround. Aside from just waiting to hear back from the owners (and I've never waited more than an hour), I've found there are more options that are more readily available than Zip. I also like that some of the cars have a little personality to them - like great CD's or little knick knacks on the dash board. There is a little laundry list of items I don't like, however. The biggest one being that for Carkit cars, (which is a great, convenient idea) you have to have a smart phone. I have no desire on earth to have a smart phone, and it's really inconvenient to have to either call the support team or call my girlfriend to press the online button to unlock it. Zipcar has a magnetic card that I carry in my wallet and I prefer that. This leads me to my second dislike: I've found that calling the support line is hit or miss whether or not someone will answer! This is really disconcerting in terms of thinking of breaking down or having an accident. I've called the line to have them open the car and no one has answered. I was just standing outside the car like umm... Eventually the owner came out and unlocked the car for me. A one-up that Zipcar has is that my fiancee and I share an account and even if I rent the car, she can drive it. With Getaround, only the person who rents the car can drive it, which kinda sucks when thinking about taking a getaway trip. Another thing I don't really like is that some of the cars I've rented have been trashed. One car even smelled like a really gross wet dog or something. This is something I would be fine with if I knew what I was getting into, but owners don't usually mention this in their descriptions or message you to tell you. I had one conscientious renter who messaged me to warn me about the car being messy before I rented, which was really nice and it didn't matter since I was just picking some groceries or something. But I wouldn't want to pick up a date or go to a job interview in a car that smelled like a zoo and was covered in pet hair. Lastly, the website needs some work. It's prone to glitches as another reviewer mentioned and missing a lot of key information. I was kind of confused how the rental worked and was expecting the website to have a "how it works" section, but it didn't. I wrote an email to the support team asking them a bunch of questions before I signed up. I got clear answers back very promptly, but I feel like it should have been online already. Below are my questions that I asked and short, paraphrased answers. All in all I like that Getaround is here and that is more community-based. I hope they continue to grow and improve, because it is a great concept and really helps out us carless folk!!! Questions I had to ask Getaround: 1. If a vehicle is not a "carkit" vehicle, does the owner have to come unlock it for me? (a: yes) 2. I don't have a smart phone, so on carkit vehicles I would call 1-866-Getaround to get access into the car? (a: yes, but hope they answer!) 3. Do I have to call the 1866# every time I need to get into the car, or is that just an initial thing to start my reservation then once I have the key, I can lock and unlock the car anytime I want during my reservation? (a: just to start the reservation, you can access the car using the key after that) 4. What do I do with the key once I'm done with the car? (a: leave them where you found them or whatever you and the owner discussed if it is not a carkit vehicle) 5. Is 1-866-Getaround a 24-hour #? (a: yes, but whether or not someone answers has been hit or miss in my experience) 6. Is the roadside assistance a representative through Getaround or do you work with outside companies, like AAA for instance? What if I break down 5 hours outside of Portland? (a: "just call Getaround" was the answer I got, not really a clear answer to that question) 7. Is there a charge for returning a car late, or trying to extend a reservation when someone else has the car reserved, etc.? (a: $50 per hour late, and you can call and extend pretty easily, if they answer!) 8. How responsible am I for the cleaning of the car (aside from the obvious of not leaving it completely trashed)? For example, if I take it into the mountains and get mud on the exterior, or what if I got some mud on the interior - am I required to take it to a carwash, wash the interior, etc? It seems this is a great service for those who need to rent a car but I repeatedly see terrible reviews for those wanting to offer their car. Before signing up to offer my car I did some research and found that either people loved it or despised it, so I figured I should try it out myself. 1. The worst customer service - I read this again and again and can vouch that it's very true. Anytime I had a problem there was radio silence for over a week and I had to call and email repeatedly, but when I said I wanted to cancel my subscription they responded within the same day, which means reps are available. If you email someone, they have different people responding to the email every time who have not read the earlier message between you and the previous rep so they don't answer your question or concern. This was so frustrating going in circles with different people. Their staff needs serious training on customer service. Rest assure that if you have a problem, they will do as little as possible to help. 2. You are a salve to the people who want to rent your car - When I signed up they never told me they discontinued the "reject" button. I received a request that someone wanted to borrow my car within 45 minutes but was never trained by customer service (because they are inadequate) how to tell the person I wont have my car available (funny enough I emailed them asking how to reject someone a week prior and yup, no response). I immediately responded to the persons email letting them know my car wont be available and was slammed with a $100 fine from Getaround for not having my car available. Huh?!! I called to get it removed - radio silence. I called again to cancel my membership and my rep called me almost immediately to apologize and remove the fee... interesting. 3. Calendar - You need to constantly remember to update your getaround calendar to match your schedule since you can't reject a request and probably don't want a $100 fine. Well, what if I need to run to the grocery store, or decide to go out with friends, yup, you will need to remember to block out your calendar anytime you use your car. This is unrealistic. My rep told me to just block out my calendar all the time and unblock it when I know I don't need the car that day, so I did, and people stopped requesting my car because they probably saw it was unavailable. 4. Money - You make pennies. They take about half so for a whole days rental I would make maybe $25. It's not worth the miles and wear and tear on my car. Plus people don't return your car with gas and leave trash everywhere. That's extra time I need to spend. In the near two months my car was listed, it was rented twice. The portland area is over saturated with getaround cars. If Getaround wants people to offer their car they drastically need to work on their customer service and make it worth our time and energy by paying properly. This review is for my experience while renting my car out on Getaround. If you want to have to use an app to unlock your car any time you want to use it when it's not being rented by people, and then wait for the app to try to contact their server, and fail repeatedly, particularly when it's slightly overcast, Getaround is your dream technology!! Your car also might not start if the app isn't working and you have the "extra security" feature enabled. The concept is nice. You leave a key in your car, renters sign up to rent your car via an app, then use the app to unlock your car, retrieve the key, and do whatever they're doing that day, then drop it back off in the same general location. That said: some renters will return your car with a 1/4 tank and/or full of trash. When I'm getting about $25 from their 8 hour rental and then spending $37 to refill the tank and an hour to vacuum and clean it, that sucks. And it also sucks that the gas situation happened 2 months ago, and I filled up and sent in the receipt immediately... and the issue has not been addressed by Getaround yet, as it is still "being considered by the billing department, and there are no notes on the file yet yet" after my second call to inquire about this. It happened again last month, for a smaller amount - surprise - no info yet on either. You might get some very sweet renters who seem like they drive stick well, and then you might get some teenage boys who sound high when they call you, frustrated because they don't know why the car is locked with a key in it. You can't screen renters. I wonder how my clutch is feeling, honestly. When you call Getaround for help, you will be on hold for several minutes. Someone will finally pick up after some sort of electronic telephone relay system kicks in, and they will sound like they're in China (though they're in SF). They will be VERY confused and ask you the same questions repeatedly, and not know what car you're calling about. And they take 40% of the rental income for this impeccable service...and apparently the "insurance" described by a renter in a recent review. Sounds crappy. One star because I get a few bucks while my car is otherwise sitting in the neighborhood. One more star, because that one time I rented a tiny pickup truck to move a couch, it was pleasant and easy. read more

I've really liked using Getaround, but I've definitely had some problems with it recently that has me thinking about getting my own car again. Over the weekend, about an hour before my scheduled trip, I got a text from the owner of the vehicle telling me that not only was the car dirty, it only had a 1/2 a tank of gas in it. It was kind of him to give me a heads up before I got to the car, but I ended up not being able to use the rental which meant I had to cancel my plans for the day. I ended up getting a different car for a few hours that evening, but was just charged with a $15 gas charge for not filling up the car after I was done--even though the gas gauge when I parked was steady on FULL. So not only was I charged $15, I was also charged $2 for the gas I didn't fill up. I totally understand Getaround's policy of filling the car back to what it was when you found it, especially if you go on long trips, and I've always been vigilant about filling the tank back to full when I found it, but their policy has some holes in it as I'm finding out. So even if the gas gauge on the car says it's full, you still need to fill it up, otherwise you'll get charged a fee. Confusing! I wish Getaround was like Zipcar where you're in charge of filling up the gas if it goes under a 1/4 of a tank left. One of my main reasons I use Getaround is for the environment friendliness of it, so it seems silly (and excessive) to replenish a car's gas tank when you've barely used any, not to mention it's an inconvenience to me as the driver to get gas that the car doesn't really need. I'm currently looking to buy my own car, and while I was excited to list it on Getaround, after reading these reviews and seeing the horrendous experiences owners have had, I'll be keeping my car to myself. / EDIT: I received a full refund from Getaround for the gas charge, which was definitely appreciated and helped change my 2-star rating to a 3. From a renter's perspective, Getaround PDX is not ready for prime time. First off, the website is glitch-prone and iPhone app downright useless. Second, many of the purported cars for rent aren't actually available -- I've had one person tell me they're not ready to rent theirs yet and another who was removing her car to sell it. Last and foremost, you're completely at the whim of the car owners, who are allowed to reject any request if need be. I've had over a dozen or so such refusals during a week of trying to reserve a car, and was in fact unsuccessful in obtaining one. I struggled with renting a car as a first time user. My first request was declined, without reason, but the calendar said the car was available. My second request was declined, even though the calendar was open and the owner said it was being used. My third request was never responded to and instead the owner emailed me to tell me the car was in the shop. I expected better communication from the owners. My fourth request was finally accepted and I had a great experience with the owner and the car. The Getaround app did not recognize the credit card I had saved while on my laptop so that was a pain in the ass when trying to finish the transaction from my phone. When I wanted to extend the rental the app said to contact Getaround. I called multiple times, waited on hold, left a message and never talked to a live person. Meanwhile, my rental time is running out. I finally get an email from the company, not a phone call, saying I need to contact the owner about an extension. So why didn't the website say that in the first place?? Unfortunately the owner was busy and didn't get back to me in time. Lesson learned : plan ahead. I think get around is probably good from the customer/renter standpoint - but I agree with many of the issues that are being said. The customer service is questionable. Being served by multiple people is annoying and their communication is lacking. They take a 40% commission which i think is really steep for the services they are offering on top of another $20 for the get around tracker (monthly cost) and another $99 for the install. You're out $120 before you ever get any renters. I've had ok experiences with fuel / renters taking car of the car. If the car starts off clean, they do good keeping it that way, and if the fuel is full - they fill it back up. I just take a pic after i leave the car, and check on it briefly following a rental. The one time someone did not return it full, I just submitted pictures and a fuel receipt and was reimbursed + $10. I'll keep doing it for now - I figure its a startup company and it will take them time to work out all the bugs from both a customer and renter perspective. read more

I use Getaround to do Uber and the cars are always clean and equipped with everything I need to drive. If/when I have to submit a ticket it's always resolved immediately. It worked for me! I'm a Getaround user in SF (I even wrote a review because it worked so well and was cool) and had some business in Portland so I gave it a go while there. I'm not sure how the other reviewer did it but I bundled my request (requested 5 cars at once) from a selection of cars close to my hotel which was next to the Convention Center and within 10 minutes had a car, which was just a block away :-) As a public transportation user it was a breeze to hop a "train" to the convention center and from there across the river to downtown, the car was actually for a "Day Off" to check out the Columbia River not for biz, so it was awesome that I didn't have to rent and deal with a car the whole time. The car was "Carkit" equipped and although I had the rental till 8 a.m., I left it parked in the designated space after coming back from the river around 11 p.m., locked it, and walked to my hotel to sleep in till I had to jump on the MAX for PDX to SFO :-) Portland, TriMet and Getaround - I'm a Fan! I have been sharing/renting my truck through GetAround since it first came on the scene here in Portland. I've had nothing but great experiences with the GetAround folks and only once out of over 20 renters did someone treat my truck like it was from Avis -- all the other renters have been great. If I haven't been able to rent the truck for the exact time someone requests it, I can call them and see what we can work out. Because these are people's real cars, they are not always available and it's up to us to post that on our user page. If a car is in bad shape, just give them an honest review and if egregious, report them to GetAround, who wants everyone to have a good experience. I recommend GetAround 100%. Next at the last minute put us through a verification process after we have already, previously used there services. Four hours later, verify failed, gave no reason. The refund takes 5 days. Hundreds froze in my account. Trusting these people's services have ruined our trip and cost us too much money. Amature hour for sure. So far, I'm really optimistic about my upcoming experience. I'll be visiting Portland and have a vehicle reserved for a 24-hour period. There was a booking snafu with applying my Groupon credit, but a "Customer Happiness" team member contacted me via phone and email...literally...within the hour...and I was at work...at night...late!! So BIG KUDOS for alleviating my, "Crap! I wonder if I'll hear from someone maybe tomorrow during 'normal business hours'...," fear immediately. The car owners can (and will) easily decline your request for whatever reasons at their convenient. I've tried for a whole week trying to get a car, truck, SUVs, and not a single owner will accept. There's nothing wrong with my part. I have a decent legit picture on my profile, a good credit, and a clean driving history. I love Getaround! I've had only positive experiences both with renting cars and their customer service. I prefer it over Zipcar and Turo because it's more immediate and doesn't have yearly fees. Being able to extend the trip by 15 minute intervals is so convenient. All the cars I've used are clean and so easy to use. The app can be the car key, which couldn't be more convenient. You can book a car literally 5 minutes before you want it, and there is no waiting period to get an activation card or meet up with the owner. The first time I used it, I downloaded the app and booked a car the same day. It's also great for younger renters! I'm 21 and there is a small extra percentage fee (usually under $10 for half a day), but nothing like large car rental companies. My only disappointment is that there aren't many cars to choose from in Portland. Browsing in other larger cities like SF, Getaround has WAY more cars available to rent. So I'm waiting patiently for it to grow in Portland but ugh. There are really only 2 or 3 sedans downtown and low supply has made prices higher than SF. read more

One of the most horrible companies I've ever delt with. They're a joke and over charge. If you extend it they charge you double. My boyfriend and I were renting a car every day for about a month straight spending well over $2,000 and they treat you like sh!t. Constantly trying to say I didn't replace fuel when I did and had the photos to show it, they harass you of you're a min late. The last time I rented they suspended me for being late when I still had the car and I couldn't get into my account and didn't have to address to drop it off so I just left it at a Denny's because for one I didn't know I was insured or what was going on. They kept bugging me about fuel that wasn't a the way filled up when the sh!t was half full when I got it and we're expecting me to fill it up and one time I told them a car was dirty and they wanted to me to take it to get delailed. Why would I spend my time paying for a car to go have it cleaned. They customer service is horrible and dumb af. Anyways long story short they can go getaround to f**kin off! read more

I have both rented and now rent car(s) through Getaround. The cars I've rented haven't always been perfect, but have always been convenient. I haven't needed any customer service there. But recently I decided to post my new (to me) car on Getaround. The customer service was fantastic. I was kept up-to-date on each step of preparing my car for rental. The mechanic they used to make sure my car is safe and drive-able actually charged me less than quoted. I love that I'm getting a 6 month trial on the Connect subscription. The calendar feature for reserving my car seems a little funky, but still doable. My car is already on her maiden Getaround voyage and I'm not worried about the condition in which she'll be returned to me because, no matter what might happen, Getaround has me covered. read more

I had a confirmed and prepaid reservation with Tibi Predescu for his BMW X! more than 2 weeks before my family came into town when I needed this larger car. About 1.5 hours prior to scheduled pickup I received a call from GetAround saying that "the car was in the shop," and the reservation could not be honored. REALLY, 1.5 hours prior to pickup?!?!? I specifically needed a car that had a third row of seats, and there was nothing available with this option through their site. Guess what, nothing available anywhere else in Portland with a third row that day. Picked up family at airport and gave them the immediate tour of MAX and the TriMet bus system. Nice!! GetAround didn't help out, barely offered an apology. NOTHING! So they both get this review, and I hope it helps someone out! Go with Turo, MUCH better!! read more

No really, WATCH THE F"(K out for this so called "company"! I put in a damage claim after a woman rented my van (in which I took the photos, messaged the renter and she admits that the damage was not there before her rental but not sure who hit her while she had it). Getaround did their typically lack of immediate response for claims for several weeks so I went and got a quote to fix the damage...$1200!!! But as I continued to contact them about this, their agent who finally followed up decided that they wouldn't cover the damage. Part of the reason she emailed (and this is a direct quote from that email) is: "this vehicle is street parked and the damage was on the street facing side of the vehicle." Talk about blaming the victim! So the fact that I park my vehicle on the street between renters is now a way to dodge the matter and leave me with a damaged vehicle. And here is their attempt to comfort me: "we would like to reimburse you for the windshield wiper replacement as a sign of good faith."....really?! The windshield wiper damage? Good faith?! I suppose I had better take them up on that to wipe away the freakin' tears for entrusting them with my undamaged vehicle. $1200 is far more than I make with them in an entire year. This too could be your punishment for renting with Getaround! I'm sure that folks who rent and damage others' cars with no retribution like this service a lot!!! P.S. It's amazing that Getaround will give you feedback on Yelp within an hour but won't respond to Claims for weeks on end. I have waited over 6months for a claim to be handled with them in the past. Hmmmm, makes you wonder why they feel the need to monitor their Yelp reviews more aggressively than their car owner claims... read more

I'm so sick of this! I've been using Getaround since it started up to rent cars. I am finding that there is not really a huge improvement over this so-called "sharing economy" over traditional renting. I think from now on I'm going back to Enterprise. On the one hand the on the street carkit is seemingly conveneint. On the other hand I am finding that the lact of direct handoff is causing problems. My most recent experience was renting a 16 year old car for the weekend. When I picked it up, there were dried dead leaves scattered around the trunk and body floor, a mostly empty coconut water can rolling around, and some garbage in the passenger side floor. Also, part of the fabric panelling on the rear passenger side door was peeling off and moldy. I shrugged it off as the condition the owner keeps their car in and figured they knew about it. I mean, the moldy peeling fabric panel seemed pretty obvious and it didn't really bother me. I returned it and today I get notice that I am getting charged $100 for 'eroding community trust' with pictures enclosed of the abovementioned conditions. Maybe the previous renter had left it like that. Maybe the owner had left it like that. I have no way of knowing. I wish I had taken pictures. Please tell me how I ripped off a door panel AND caused it to mold in the space of one weekend. And got dried dead leaves in a car in the peak of summer when there is not a brown leaf to be had. I guess I could still go get the coconut water can out of my recycling bin and photograph it but the trash is long gone. My previous bad experience, which to Getaround's credit they rectified: my husband lost our car key during a rental while about 70 miles from town on a snowy mountain. We had an 8 week old baby. Getaround provided NO direct assistance in getting a replacement key and customer service was unresponsive. Eventually the owner (offered to) met us halfway, our friends gave us a ride to meet them and a ride back to the car, we rented the car an additional day, and went and had a new key made for the owner out of our pocket and gave her a gift card for the amount of money she had spent on gas. After which Getaround tried to charge us the replacement key fee even though WE had replaced the key and reimbursed the owner directly. I had to take to twitter to complain and get them to rectify it. So, in sum, it seems convenient to find neighborhood locations, get some price breaks, etc. But it turns out you are just too subject to the whims and caprice of the owners. You never know what you are going to get in terms of a car (the car I rented a few weeks ago had a broken power inverter, the car I rented before that was sort of sketchy in the wheel/handling, etc.) and then you get these situations like this where the owner decides to screw you over (I'm sure it's just as bad for owners and bad renters). read more
