So I feel I need to review getaround for perspective owners as well as renters, post-Portland launch of their on demand Connect service. This is where there is no owner approval of renters and owners get a text message someone will be renting your car in 15 minutes (I am an owner). The technology is sound, the owner stashes a key and the renter's app unlocks the door. Boom - 5 stars, well done. But there are issues - for one a renter drove well over 200 miles (the daily limit), but getaround said the gps recorded less than 200 miles. I'm stumped on that one - my odometer is correct, and gps does drop out. No big deal, I'll deal with that, but getaround did not believe me they exceeded 200 miles, so I docked them a star for that. The customer service reps always pick up if you have a problem - very cool and kudos to their responsiveness. When renters neglect to fill the car it's a pain to fill up and send in the receipt for reimbursement. There is no visible feedback system for renters/owners so you'll never know if the renter is problematic (or owners for that matter). But I believe it was an honest mistake, I can't imagine that being a huge problem as we're all trained to fill up rental cars before returning them to the airport. read more

Just realized belatedly that I never updated this review with the aftermath of our rental. A week after returning the car, Getaround charged $750 to my credit card (which was fortunately blocked by the fraud protection department). Only after that charge was declined did I receive an email from Getaround informing me that the owner had reported damage to the car immediately after it was returned and I was being billed for repairs. They attached photos of the damage, taken by the owner. I immediately replied, "Thanks for getting in touch. I am absolutely baffled about the damage fee. I checked the car over twice before returning it and found no new damage to the car. I showed the pictures to my partner (who was traveling with me) and he agrees that the dent was not present when we returned the car and can't think of a way that the damage could have happened while we had the car. I notice that the photos were taken in daylight (I returned the car in the evening) and that the car is not in the location where I returned it (I parked on the right side of the street, not in the driveway). It seems very possible that the damage occurred after I returned the car, e.g., while it was parked on the street. Is there a procedure to appeal the damage fee?" Three days later I received a response from a different customer service representative saying that they were investigating the case and would keep me updated on their findings and determination. I never heard anything else, nor was my card charged again. In summary: - Took a week to contact me about damage that was allegedly found right after I returned the car. - Charged my card for the damage fee without contacting me, and only sent me a message when the charge was blocked. - Subsequently took three days to respond and open an investigation - Never followed up to let me know the outcome of the investigation I hope that their customer service has improved significantly since then, but it doesn't sound like that's the case. read more

Getaround is great if you know what you're getting into. Because the vehicles available are actually owned and maintained by your neighbors, you have to deal with that. It may not be the cleanest or the nicest looking car, or maybe your neighbor's a neat freak, or maybe they have cds of a band you never heard of but turn out to really, really like, or maybe they keep a knife in the side door that your grandma finds when you pick her up, or maybe their house is really hard to park near, or maybe they have a walrus mustache and want to meet you before they hand over the key, or maybe they left the key in a hiding spot but forgot to tell you so you end up waking up their roommate on Thanksgiving morning, or maybe you unlock the car with your phone and get the key out of the glovebox. Basically the rental process is as diverse as there are car owners, but the variety of vehicles available can be a bonus since you typically can't rent a hybrid or SUV/truck this cheaply. Although gas is not included, it's much cheaper than Zipcar and there are no member fees. The system suffers somewhat from the user/owner ratings, which is like eBay--A++++ would definitely rent again--and not very revealing of the car's actual condition. I have used Getaround several times and recently my request for a two day rental was accepted within minutes, even though the rental start time was only a few hours away. Typically it is better to request at least a day in advance. I think only two of my requests have ever been denied or ignored. (The owner's response rate and average time is listed on their car page.) You can also include several cars in one request, then the first owner to respond gets your business and you can avoid multiple holds on your credit card. I needed a truck to take big boxes to Air Cargo, and it was easy to book with Getaround, walk to a neighbor's house to borrow/rent his car for a few hours, drop the car off and walk home. How nice to not have to own our own large vehicle, yet have the convenience of a local rental. read more

With some trepidation, I put my 2009 Forester up for rental on Getaround.com and after about 12 rentals, I must say that I was amazed that a peer-to-peer car sharing system could actually work so effectively. Think about it, you have a certain type of car in a certain area that is really convenient for other people to rent and helps them avoid the cost and hassle of buying a car. My experience has been that the renter is just as grateful to get the car as I am to get the money. With a ratings system that levels the playing field and calls out bad experiences, I have found that it keeps everyone honest and indeed enthusiastic about getting my car back to me full of gas and in good condition. I even had one renter vacuum it out so that it was far cleaner than when I got it. Payments have come in predictably and on time, so this has turned into a nice little supplemental fund that is keeping me skiing on the weekends. I highly recommend it to anyone. read more

I am an Uber driver at a 4.98 rating and 12,000 rides. I started using Getaround about 3 months ago and every thing went smooth until last week. Now they have very few cars to offer Uber drivers and then today I went to get my car I rented at 2am and it was not there. Get Around used to have a number to call and speak to someone however now they have gotten rid of that number and the only way to get in touch with someone is by an email, I sent 2 emails first at 2:10am next at 2:20 am and never got a response back so I left and now it is almost 7am and they still have not emailed or called me. It cost me $20,00 in fuel in my gas guzzling truck, then they charged my credit card $41.20, then my lost revenue that this is a huge travel day with lots of airport rides. I could have worked at my other job today but said no. I am out over $200.00. Never I say Never use this Company. read more

My wife and I have used Getaround to share our Honda Civic Hybrid several times and our experience has been totally positive. It's got an easy-to-use on-line interface and I like the fact that we have total control over who we do or do not share the car with. Most importantly, Getaround elegantly solves the insurance problem that's always been a lurking worry in the past when we've borrowed or lent out vehicles. And when we've had questions, staff have consistently been quick to respond. I also like the fact that Getaround screens drivers in multiple ways (http://blog.getaround.com/how-getaround-creates-a-safe-and-secure-car-sharing-community/), not just through FB, as suggested by another reviewer. And whenever someone requests to use our car, we have the chance to say Yeah or Neah as we see fit. Initially, we just used Getaround to share our car with friends & neighbors. But over the past month or so we've shared it with folks we don't know too - and it's worked out just great. We make a little $$ during times our car would otherwise be sitting in the driveway, and we've gotten to meet some nice new folks when we hand off the key. read more

Getaround user interface is simple to use and there seems to be good diversity of vehicle types (at least in my neighborhood). I use infrequently so the nominal one-time registration fee works well for me. It's worthwhile/important to read the owners description of their vehicle and the terms they're sharing under - that makes for good relations and experiences on both ends. I admit to being technology-avoidant so I'm not thrilled by the dependency on smartphones and remote servers for this kind of operation. That's why only 4-stars - I get nervous that technology will fail. I can see how people with glitch-free lives would love Getaround and perhaps I'll know that life someday. I believe this kind of car sharing is the future and I'm grateful to Getaround for making it an easy to use and economical experience for running errands or moving stuff. Check it out! read more

I like Getaround! The staff picks up the phone fast in my experience and the cars were available for what I needed (surfing!). It is so easy that I got uneasy and called like 4 different times I with my little worries and the getaround staff members went over each step and while doing so having a calm and sweet tone. There is any car you need or want and me having a tiny car you can not take on longer trips, bring friends in or ski/surf with I was very happy with this concept. It was easier for me than a rental place and waaaay cheaper! Plus I am putting money into the hands of a community based system rather than an ugly nationwide company :) The car owners are honest and also helpful. Plan your trip ahead! I found that people that own the cars like a good heads up and that is fair! And leave the car the way you found it. I am still trying to figure out how the car got opened with my phone call! He has assured me, solely based on interactions about the incident, aside from this one renter that It's worth having my vehicle on the platform. I've used it to go skiing and surfing - awesome. My parents just came to town for 10 days and rented a great, solid, no-frills Toyota. It was less expensive than a rental car, and just like the one they have at home, and the people renting it through Getaround were really friendly. Plus it feels good to not be supporting the churning-out of new cars just to fuel the rental car industry, where they sit mostly unused in big lots until peak weekends when they all get rented. read more

DO NOT use Getaround! Getaround is an incompetent, unprofessional, and dishonest business. I was in a minor accident while driving a Getaround car. Getaround charged me a $750 "damage fee." This is far larger than any deductible I have encountered for car insurance. Unlike Zipcar and car rental agencies, there is no way to purchase a damage fee waiver from Getaround. You are stuck with this fee no matter what. On top of this fee (which they hide deep in their website), Getaround charged me twice for the fee ($1,500)! I have been trying for weeks to have the second, erroneous fee removed. But they have failed to correct their error. It is horrible to be a Getaround driver. It is also horrible to be a Getaround owner. I reported my accident immediately to the owner and to Getaround. Getaround took SIX WEEKS to even acknowledge the accident, and the owner had to call and email Getaround more than 10 times to even get this acknowledgement. It has now been THREE MONTHS and Getaround has not even initiated the insurance claim to repair the car. Getaround may seem cheap, but that is only because the driver and owner assume ALL of the risk. It is NOT worth it! Find another way! read more

I love this service - it is an awesome way to reduce carbon footprint. I'm not a car owner, and I know that determines my perspective of the service. Very reasonable rates with a huge selection of vehicles to choose. I'm saving to buy a car, and using this service until I can buy. This has been a great way to check out models and makes I'm curious about without the pressure of a test drive through a dealer. Much cheaper than rental car rates. If there is any drawback, I'd say that Getaround simply isn't as popular as it should be, and there would be even better selection and options if more car owners joined! Our car was a former Getaround car and has a Getaround CarKit in it. Unfortunately, it had to be retired when it got to be 10 years old. About a month ago it was stolen. I remembered the CarKit which allows state of the art location tracking so contacted Getaround to see if they could help us locate it. They were VERY helpful and turned the location tracking back on and were able to help us track the car location. This went way above and beyond their normal duties since it had nothing to do with their usual car sharing business! Eventually, the car was located and recovered. Great service, easy money. I put my 7-year-old car on Getaround last April, and I've been amazed at how much people are using it. My monthly earnings on it (minus Getaround's commission) have been $305, $183, $380, $418 (!). Since it mostly sits in my driveway during the week, I don't miss it, and on those occasions when it's out and I forgot to block it out, I have used another Getaround or a Car2Go and I come out way ahead financially. Having the connect kit installed makes it easy for others to just come and get it even when I'm not around, and I have never had any issues with people leaving the car messy. Getaround is such a great concept...You're telling me I get paid to have other people use my car and I don't have to do a thing? Great concept, but unfortunately it doesn't work that way. I rented out my car on Getaound for 6 months and I'm surprised I have hair left on my head that I didn't tear out. I have horror stories of people renting my car and trashing it. One woman got a parking ticket that I had to pay for and get reimbursed months later, and she left me a nice gift of what appears to be a glob of jelly is still smeared into the speakers in my steering wheel. Another guy left it covered in a thick layer of dirt and left the inside covered with dog hair. After my oil change light went off much earlier than usual I took it to a mechanic and the guy said it looked like someone had driven my car "like they stole it." But the worst was when some shady character rented it on a weekday, left it at a hotel somewhere and completely forgot to return my car. How did I get my car back? By myself, of course, because Getaround customer service is the worst. They never answer their phones and getting them to return an email is like pulling teeth. Anyway, I used the GPS to find where my car was parked, saw it was at a hotel off I-5, called the hotel, and they put me through to a room where a bunch of guys passed around the phone until I got the person who had rented my car, and I told them I was going to call the police if he didn't return it immediately. When he finally returned it, the car smelled like cigarettes. Anyway, after having to pay for multiple oil changes, new tires, and the depreciated value of my vehicle due to the high mileage, I didn't make any money. Today I got an email that Getaround now offers help with maintenance for car owners...do they also offer therapy and the mental health assistance required after having to deal with them? Others have said it and I agree...don't waste your time. read more

I use Getaround when I'm planning ahead. I LOVE this service as it allows me to use gas-efficient vehicles for trips, people are more flexible than some other car rental services, and I feel like I'm helping local folks while I'm at it. I have not had problems getting different car owners to respond to my requests (usually within a few hours) so I'm not sure if I'm renting in a location that's got more "ready" folks in than other reviewers. Getaround had been a lifesaver for me on two different trips to Portland. I have rented 3 times for day trips out of the city and have not had any problems. The cost is remarkably reasonable (much better than Zipcar) and the cars I've driven have been as advertised. I have been declined once and didn't get a response once, but there seem to be enough people in Portland offering their vehicles through the service that It wasn't a problem to find another car in a nearby location in a similar price range. If I ever move to Portland, I can imagine taking advantage of Getaround on a regular basis. read more
