Bitter Lake

I was referred to this little gym in the Bitter Lake area by a business client of mine who was a…read moreclient of the gal that runs this place. She explained the science behind the Super Slow exercise protocol. I was a very skeptical that you could build significant muscle in only one 10-min workout per week. I went home and spent an hour or more Googling research about this. I also read the book she recommended "Body By Science." It all seemed to make sense scientifically, but I asked myself, if this actually works, why isn't most everyone I know that works out doing it? Well I found out after my first session. It IS only 10-12 minutes, but in order for it to work right, you have to do the exercises with proper form and push your muscles to failure for several seconds which is VERY uncomfortable to put it mildly. The ironic thing is that this form of working out is actually much safer than many other forms, especially crossfit which seems to currently be all the rage. So I think it's a combination of people not believing you can get significant results in 10 minutes a week (I actually am doing it twice a week - but to build muscle you still can only do it once a week), and, some people are just cutout for the level of "torture" you have to slowly endure toward the end of each exercise. But for someone busy like myself that hates working out, it's a very efficient way to gain muscle. I sometimes try to do the workout by myself when I don't want to drive across the bridge but I never get as sore as I do when I do it with Anne Marie. I'm not sure if it's something about her machines or more likely she makes me push myself harder. After my 10 minute workout all I have to do is make sure I eat enough (I use a food intake journal app) and make sure I get enough sleep. The result has been as good if not better than any other type of workout I've tried. The only downside is this is a by appt only small gym in an odd location and a bit of a trek for me. I wish she had a gym on the Eastside. The equipment looks a bit dated too (but it all works), and there's never more than one other person there training so if you want to gawk at people (or people to gawk at you) in a club-like atmosphere, this place may not be for you. I consider this place and the workout she is using a hidden secret in Seattle. While the 10-12 minutes is pretty intense, I still try to get some additional cardio in twice a week, but I typically get that through sports and recreational activities I enjoy instead going to the gym. When I try to explain this program to my friends and they are skeptical, all I have to do is take my shirt off to convince them. LOL. I also Googled SuperSlow Philip Alexander (the doctor that help pioneer this technique) to read more about it and understand it better. Or SuperSlow Study Switzerland. I am surprised I never heard of SuperSlow before!

I've never been someone who can commit to a gym membership or regular exercise. I've tried many…read moretimes over the years, but I always get bored and unmotivated and then fizzle out quickly. I was nervous to try OTF because of my lack of fitness and experience. My trial class was with Coach Anna. The studio called the night before to walk me through what to expect, which I really appreciated. On the day of the first class, the front desk staff and Coach Anna walked me through everything and answered all my questions. Anna continued to check in throughout the workout to make sure I was doing okay. I finished and was shocked that I didn't hate it. I very hesitantly signed up, but I'm happy to report that months later, I'm still loving it and feel better than ever. Things I love about OTF in general: I don't have to make decisions about what exercises to do each day, I can't back out last minute if I'm not in the mood (there's some flexibility for real emergencies if you call them), you set your own pace and intensity, classes fly by and I don't get bored, coaches are always there to answer questions and give feedback/recommendations, the benchmarks and challenges keep me motivated, and maybe most importantly, I've seen huge changes in my overall health and strength. Specific Shoreline studio details: the front desk staff are so friendly. They always greet me by name with a smile. The studio is clean and well cared for. I mostly take classes with Anna and Mitchell, just because that's what works with my schedule. They are both amazing at what they do. They're kind, motivating, personable, and I love that they give me feedback on form when lifting. For me, this is really important so I don't injure myself and so that I'm working the right muscles. One piece of feedback is for ALL of the coaches to give feedback on form on the weight floor. I've taken some classes where the coaches are pretty quiet and don't really interact with the people in the class, and it's not as helpful for me as someone newer to lifting. Overall, I love this OTF studio and look forward to many classes to come (especially with Anna and Mitchell)!

We were invited by some friends, who have guest passes with their membership, to spend the morning…read moreswimming during Rec Time in the pool. The space was large, looked clean, and well laid out. We enjoyed the expansive family changing areas, different and a great surprise. Lockers are available, too for use while swimming in the large pool. The pool was separated in half. One half was composed of four lap lanes; good signage for those wishing to swim slow, medium or fast. The second half was also split in half, creating two smaller, square pools, one shallow (2-4 feet) the other deeper (4-5 feet). The shallow side held a water structure, shaped like a mushroom, that showered upon the kids splashing and playing in the area. (To turn this feature on, a lifeguard must be notified.) In order to be free to swim in the deep end (where there is a tube slide, which wasn't in use during our visit), one must prove to the lifeguards competency and skill - jump far enough in to hold your head underwater, swim the length of the pool without resting or stopping, and float or tread water for 30 seconds. This is a great tool for encouraging up-coming swimmers, as well as keeping people safe. Well done! After our swim session, our friends gave us a little tour of the class spaces, gymnasium, workout machines, free coffee/tea/hot cocoa, and kids/teen play and hang out spaces. It's a great facility and we look forward to coming back!
