I purchased a used mountain bike from a friend for $65 back in 2013. I took it in for upgrades and servicing to a local shop...only to be told it would make a nice boat anchor, so I promptly left that joint! Took it in to Germantown Cycles and was pleasantly surprised to hear them tell me it just needed a little love. Here we are in 2019 six years later and still riding strong. This bike has taken me through the rigors of two MoCo Epic Events - The 35 mile single-track event at Schaeffer Farms in 2013, then again their 25 mile ride in 2014. I have a gorgeous 12 mile circuit straight from my house. This ride takes me through Lois Green Park, The History Farm Park where I ford a stream and cross over wooden bridges and through the tunnel under Airpark Road. Yup, there is a tunnel you've been driving over near The Pope Nursery. With many tweaks, tubes and tactile adjustments over these years the entire staff has been outstanding. read more

I've been here 3 times now for service. Every time they get my bike back as quickly as they can, for a fair price and in perfect working order! They do such a good job that it isn't worth me tuning it up on my own. Another big plus is every other bike shop (and auto shop for that matter) seems to find things I need to buy/repair when I bring a bike in. Not so, with Germantown. The price is as-quoted, or less, and that is what will keep me coming back. I've also found that the techs take their time to explain components to you so you can make field adjustments when needed. Both our bikes were in need of a little TLC. Tuning, checking, tightening and we both wanted holders for our phones on the bikes. As is a tradition in our house, we talked about doing this for about a month. Last week we finally actually dragged the bikes to Germantown Cycles. The shop is clean, the people are awesome. 1. Friendly and knowledgeable with fair prices for repairs and inspections. They carry Specialized and Giant so they don't have a huge selection but those are two great brands so you probably don't need much else if you're in the market for a truly great bike. For myself, I just needed to get my 14-yr old Trek inspected. Hadn't ridden it in 10 years so wanted to make sure it was still good. They gave me a free inspection and refilled the air in my tires. Bike was good to go. It was so quick I was shocked. I also have a Timberline GT that needs some work and I wasn't sure the best place to take it. Now I know where to go! read more

Nothing but worse problems since I got my bike back. Pretty sure it's related to what I suggested it was, but they insisted it was something else. I'll try andes, then only go back here for "tune ups" (free, you get what you pay for) to diagnose and then try it fix myself or go to another bike shop. It breaks my heart to write such a review, but I gave Germantown Cycles many chances over the past years and have now lost my patience. Don't get me wrong, the owner is a great guy, very responsive, dedicated to give you the best service. In fact, at my last visit, he made several calls to find a company who could service my suspension since they couldn't do it themselves (brain suspension). He was very clear about the process, respected the price (a bit over, but fine for considering the service) and timeline that he had said. The problems I encountered were mostly on the mechanic side and reflect the poor quality of work done in the shop. The problems: First, when I showed up to pick up my bike, it had a million scratches on it (see the crank arm picture). If I had known that they would be so careless with the bike while the suspension was being fixed, I would have brought back my bike home while waiting for it. Second, they did an awful job at installing my rear suspension after getting it back from Fox (see pictures). The hose going from the suspension to the external reservoir was caught between the swing arm and the seat tube, scratching the paint and causing an indentation in the seat tube (last picture). Note to the mechanic, the little screw on the seat stay isn't decorative, it is meant to hold the tube to keep it away from being caught by the moving parts of the frame. It makes me very sad to write a bad review for Germantown cycles since I know how hard it is for small bike shops to subsist now that everything is easily accessible online. A priority for them should be to provide knowledgeable mechanics and good services, which you cannot get on internet. Unfortunately, that didn't work for me. Will likely not go back. read more

Went here with my son and friend and was getting ready to spend more than $500.00 in the store. After literally forcing a specific bike on us we needed training wheels for the bike and at checkout, he informed us that the bike will be ready tomorrow. It would have been best if he had informed us prior to us getting to the checkout. When we insisted that we would wait he said it was his boss that said that. His boss had no courtesy to come out and inform us. He literally said we can go somewhere else. If we were a set of white folks he wouldn't have treated us this way. I will never recommend this place and will take my business to somewhere that treats people with respect. read more

Germantown Cycles is a small bike shop with big personality. Their employees are very attentive and really know their stuff. I got my bike tuned up here and upgraded my tires after getting some advice from Alex, one of the awesome employees there. The bikes on the racks may have a bit daunting of a price tag but the inclusion of free tune ups really helps to offset the cost. Honestly, after buying a cheaper bike then getting its inevitable tune up done and upgrading some of the cheaply made parts it'd be better to just buy an excellent quality bike from here in the first place. This local bike show is great if you are just starting your search for finding a bike that best suits you. I went there originally with my boyfriend to find a bike for him and a week later I was placing an order for a bike for myself! I ordered the Vita Specialized, black and hot pink, beautiful bike! The friendly and super knowledgeable staff actually recommended it to me, and I had noticed what a sharp looking bike it was the minute I walked in. They helped find the right size for me, and when it came in they assembled it correctly with no errors the first time! I can't say the same for my boyfriend's bike that he ordered from REI... I found this place by googling the nearest bike repair shop. I needed a new saddle (the "torture device," as Craig had so eloquently termed) and had to fix a stiff link on my bike chain. I'm a total noob at any of this bike stuff, but Craig (owner) didn't judge me for asking amateur questions about my bike. Here's what happened in my visit- - got a new saddle: Germantown Cycles put that onto my bike - repaired/lubricated link on the chain: charged $1 (but ended up not billing me on it at all) - got a new bike rack for my car: Craig talked me through my options and then after picking a bike rack, he assembled it onto my car - got a new helmet: he was right by me help in me to find my size - got a new air pump: Craig didn't try to sell me the most expensive option, but was very real about which product best suited my needs Craig didn't push any products, and his general disposition was so peaceful and chill. I love Germantown cycles. I've been bringing my bikes here a few years and recently bought a new bike from them. They are very patient and willing to explain anything to you, all you have to do is ask and they'll walk you through the answers you need. They are doing an incredible job right now especially given the COVID situation. Every manufacturer in the United States is sold out of bikes under $2k and they are working very hard to find bikes, I can see they really truly hate to disappoint customers by turning them away. They also have a 7 week backlog of bike repairs (unheard of!!) and I can tell they're putting some serious hours in everyday trying to get people their bikes as fast as they can. They look as tired as I've ever seen them, but they still make time to help me out in a pinch. I think some of the low reviews are unfair- one of the things I actually like most is that they are no-pressure sales people and very chill. They won't be in your face as soon as you walk in trying to sell you a bike, but they'll gladly answer all your questions and try to make you happy. I really like that kind of energy. When I bought a bike from them they actually didn't have anything in stock for me to test, but Craig was very friendly and helped me find many different demos around Maryland so I could ride all kinds of Santa Cruz bikes in my size. TLDR: Told me they were installing quality part, installed cheaper part instead. I called to ask them to install the part they told me was on the bike; manager said request was irrational and implied that I misremembered a conversation which he himself was not present for. Disappointed and frustrated. Bought a Giant Talon 2 29er at the shop two weeks ago. I was deciding between the Talon 2 ($750) and Talon 3 ($550). I'm a college student on a budget and new to mountain biking, so trying to save money where I can. The employee I spoke with on the phone told me that a main difference between the Talon 2 and Talon 3 was that the Talon 2 had airshocks while the Talon 3 had coil shocks (considered lower quality). He also told me that when he was new to mountain biking he bought a bike with lower grade coil shocks and that those shocks broke not long after purchase, and that I would save myself that expense if I just bought the more expensive airshocks upfront. I had done a fair amount of online research in advance and was very grateful for the perspective he shared -- I did not feel that he was trying to pressure me into buying something more expensive, I felt grateful that he was sharing perspective that would save me money (and safety) down the road. Fast forward three weeks and I've been enjoying the bike immensely -- there had been a few problems, but I was willing to write them off as I figure any bike will require some adjustments, maintenance and unexpected problems every here and there. Nevertheless, yesterday on the trail I noticed my suspension behaving weirdly, making sounds and absorbing impact much less well. Upon inspecting the problem more closely, I discovered that the shocks on the bike are not the more expensive air shocks (the ones I thought I was paying the extra $200 for) but rather coil shocks (the ones I decided to avoid). Today, I called the shop to inquire about the shocks, and to see if they would be willing to install the ones I was told would be on the bike. The manager, Rich, told me this was not possible because in his opinion, there was no way I would have been told that the bike would have airshocks. Never mind that Rich, the manager, was not present for the phone conversation under dispute. Nor did Rich bother to speak with Sean (the salesperson I originally spoke with) to see what he remembered of the conversation. Instead, he simply contrasted my account of "what you think happened" with his version of what "actually happened," despite having no knowledge about that conversation himself, nor taking any efforts to that end. Disappointed, frustrated, hoping I'll be able to take my business to people that treat me better. read more

It troubles me to write this review, honestly, but I feel I have to in the light of so many awesome little bike stores out in the world of hard-core cyclists. If you're comparing apples to apples then the store should be compared with an underperforming Performance or a very profit driven chain. The guy that helped me was nice enough; I was looking for someone who was truly truly into hard-core cycling, ideally road cycling. The store really did not have very much in it and what I was looking for high-end lights and performance cycling gear. I guess what I'm saying is that if you go to Germantown Cycles don't expect a very wide variety or even a different variety than anything you can get at Performance. What you will get a Germantown cycles is attention to the consumer, which is super helpful if you don't work on your bikes at all and just occasionally ride. read more

They've helped me with a lot of issues, mostly dealing with my gaps in knowledge of cycling, and have always been on point with their recommendations. I have been here a dozen times this summer and I'd give then 5 stars for each and every visit. If you're at all uncertain about them, give them a call and tell them what you need; I've received a fair bit of help over the phone service without ever giving them my name which tells me that they treat everyone that well Update: Just got my bike back from them. I asked them to do something that they haven't even heard of before but they did it perfectly, and for a lot less in labor than I expected the job cost. This bike shop is everything i hate about the bad ones. If you're not a bike expert and know exactly what you want, don't bother even going. I walked in looking for help for a friend who wanted to get into cycling. I got there first and noticed there were only a couple road bikes in this very tiny shop. I asked the man behind the counter (tall guy with red hair) if that's all they had in stock. Barely looking up at me, he told me they generally order their bikes. Difficult for my friend who doesn't really know what he wants without trying them for size and feel. The photos online must be their old shop. They recently moved and have very little inventory and by today's experience, very little interest in helping customers. I went to this shop yesterday to pick up a rim and cassette for my sons mountain bike. The people there were very friendly. They put the rear rim and tire together in about 10 minutes. Fair warning, if your bike has electric assist they will refuse to do any servicing on it. They were happy to work on my e-bike once so I brought it in a second time to fix a flat and they turned me away, I had to walk the bike out of the store with the flat still on there. It was humiliating. I would not do business again with this shop even if they did have a decent selection and reasonable prices, which they do not. I eventually found a much better shop in Damascus called All American Bicycles that will work on my ebike, it's a huge shop with probably ten times the bikes and cheap prices even for nice full suspension bikes. Dropped off my bike to get a few parts replaced, they said it would take 3 days. Called 5 days later and they said they were backed up and it wouldn't be done until 7 days from original drop off. Expected faster turn around but they did a good job. Also noticed the new tire they put on that I provided brand new had dirt on it, almost like they took my bike for a ride?? Still would come back. My friend and I both bought bikes from here after shopping around quite a bit around Rockville, Gaithersburg, and Germantown. The guys working there seemed to be very involved in mountain biking on some rougher trails which is more than the casual riding I do. However, as a consequence they really seemed to know what they were selling and how those bikes compared to other brands carried by other stores. I was out riding my bike and one of my shifter cables broke. I was about a half a mile away from this shop so I brought it over to have them look at it. When I got there I noticed they had just closed. One of the employees was standing outside helping a customer test ride a bike. He asked what I needed. I told him I just wanted to drop the bike off and have them fix the shifter cable. He told me to come in anyway because their mechanics were still there. I thought he was just gonna fill out a work order for me but he fixed my bike right there. I was very happy about that because it meant I didn't have to be without my bike for several days. Super nice people who do good honest work. Called to get a ballpark on tire replacement for my daughter's bike. They gave me a rough idea, but said to go ahead and bring the bike in to be sure. We brought it in and they were able to fix her tube right there, right then! They checked everything out and said the other tube and both tires were fine. I'm glad they weren't out to find unbroken things to fix. We picked up some new grips while we were there and they were kind enough to put them on for us. After suffering much angst dealing with Performance in Gaithersburg (2 months for a tune up?? REALLY????) I decided to look into the little shop up the street from me. Best. Service. Ever. I had my old bike tuned up in a day, and several tweaks to it afterwards which were not charged (since I'd just had the tune up) I test rode several bikes, including the bike owned by the owners wife. I had ridden several before coming here, and was undecided. Getting to experience the high end components made all the difference and I bought my bike from them. More recently, I bought a trainer from them. They assembled it for me and showed me how to use it before I brought it home. When I bought my Thule bike rack from them, again they assembled it and put it on my car for me and showed me what I needed to know. I love this store!!!! read more
