Towed my BMW in after having it diagnosed at a BMW dealership with a broken fuel pump controller. Of course the dealership found lots of things they recommended having done, which I was more than a bit skeptical. Jace is the current owner and coincidentally was my service advisor at Concord BMW, so he knows what he is talking about. He told me everything that needed to be done now to get it back on the road, a few items that would be a good to address given the age and mileage, and what could be deferred until my next service. Their price was fair, transparent, and significantly less than the Stevens Creek BMW dealer service department, which I knew would be the case, but WOW it was shocking to see both estimates side by side. They got me in and out in a couple of days and I will be a loyal customer going forward. I highly recommend them. read more

I was new to owning a diesel and didn't know how easy it was to fill up the DEF tank. They filled my DEF fluid and charged me $70 bucks. 3 minutes of work and $10 of fluid. I had to wait 30 minutes to get my car back. Total rip off. read more

I have been going to Axel (owner/mechanic) at German Auto Care for over a decade. We all know that German cars can be expensive to maintain but I always felt like I was getting fair prices from Axel. Oftentimes at mechanics you feel like you might be taken advantage of or that they may not fully fix the issue, that is not the case with German Auto Care. Axel will give his opinion and then actually follow up, if the issue is smaller than he originally guessed, then he will only do the necessary work, wont over charge. First, let me start by saying that, my fiancée has been going to German Auto Care (GAC) for many years. We have three German cars between us (Mercedes E420, BMW 745Li and a Porsche 996) and I had been reluctant to take my car there because of the 20 mile distance from our home (a little inconvenient). Yes, I am lazy... Well, I am a now a convert. I had been taking my BMW to a local auto shop in the Emeryville area but had a difficult time getting results with a recent oil leak. My local mechanic kept misdiagnosing the problem, fixing 'God Knows What', and charging me for something that he never resolved. The oil leak got so bad that it ruined my alternator and the car started to have electrical problems in addition to the mechanical ones caused by the loss of oil. I took the car to Axel at German Auto Care and he figured it out. Not only did he resolve the oil leak, and replaced the alternator he found the crack in the transmission fluid reservoir cover that was causing the transmission leak that compounded the problems. My car now drives as good as it did when I first got it and my driveway is free of the pool of oil that resulted from the leak in the first place (Axel told me the secret to cleaning it up - "Kitty Litter"). Although all the repairs were not free, I feel that I was treated very well and am back in love with a the car that I was starting to dislike. I am very thankful for GAC and Axel for their Brilliance and Diligence in getting to the root cause of the problems and to my Sweetie for making me drive the extra miles to get true results. read more

I have been taking my SLK to German Auto Care for about 6 years now. Axel, the owner, has always been fair and courteous. The sole reason I found him was because the Walnut Creek Mercedes Service folks kept on charging me $2,500 visits and I was done! The summer of 2006 WC Mercedes charged $3K in repairs and then quoted for another $2,500 worth of repairs and I decided that was it. Then I found German Auto Care. I walked out paying $260 because the list of so called "repairs" that i needed were in fact, not necessary. So I have been going to GAC ever since. Recently, I just brought my 2011 GL there. Very professional here. I can't say enough good things about Axel and his crew... But, here are a few specifics. (I own an E39 540i) First time taking my car to Axel he accurately diagnosed a failing component of my driveshaft. He knows these German cars inside and out and is very familiar with common problems/failures/issues etc. He didn't charge me for his inspection even though he knew I was having the new driveshaft installed by a friends shop. He definitely earned my business. Later, I brought my BMW back to him for new rear ball joints, upper control arms, and bushings up front. He also installed a new secondary air pump and new corner wedges to replace the damaged ones. While he was giving me a quote for parts and labor, he gave me the number of a parts supplier and suggested I check their price on an air pump to see if it would be less than the price he had listed. What mechanic does that?! Thank you!! "Here is my price... But, call these guys... They may sell that part cheaper." Turns out they were cheaper... By $140!! Thanks Axel! read more

It's been some years since I owned a German automobile but back in the day...Axel & crew were the greatest thing since ball bearings! Really. GAC was my go-to repair shop for a decade - 3 BMWS and a 300SD Turbo Diesel. Not the cheapest, not the most expensive...just the best. Just broke out of a beautifully manicured mini dealer/service center where I wasn't being treated proper. Not really the employees fault...just felt like I was on a waterslide with no ausfahrt. After cooling my RPMs, I called Axel for comfort and was thrilled to discover GAC DOES MINI COOPERS! Can't wait to visit their plain, boring waiting area again and to schnickschnack with those glorious grease monkeys. I read some of GAC's unhappy reviewers and realized they must be Porsche owners ;) If I could give Axel six stars on Yelp, I would. read more

i have owned 3 mercedes and 2 bmw's and mick has serviced all of them. he is very meticulous and professional beyond words. i took my bmw dinan to him after the warranty from bmw had expired. they had all the settings set to an ordinary 540i. it did not damage the car but were off, not allowing it's true performance to shine. in my very honest opinion, he is the best german made car mechanic in the state of california. and i do not lie, ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! read more

Years of decent service, mind you, but still, loaded dice. I am NOT confusing this place with another one down the street. They repaired the "brake booster" on my car once when the culprit was the master cylinder. Also tore down the hood pad on my car without asking whatsoever. It was crumbling slightly, but they thought nothing of tearing the whole fucking thing out, leaving me with increased engine noise. That's a $90+ part with shipping, assholes. read more

I've had both my Mercedes (serially, not concurrently owned) serviced by German Auto Care since 2001. It's not cheap, but not unfairly priced, and they do a very thorough job. You get what you pay for, and Jim, the senior technician there, really knows what he is doing. I don't go there to admire the surroundings or spotlessness (it's a car shop not a doctor's office, dammit!); I go there to keep my car running as it should. The shop is excellent at fixing and restoring cars like my 1977 MB 6.9; expertise which is hard to come by these days. I've supplied them with parts I bought on eBay (I'm not rich by any means) which they installed for me, instead of what I assume is the norm of the shop providing them themselves at a markup. They even did some tricky custom work: fitting a modern, more efficient heater regulator (I forget the exact part) and hiding it so it looked original for a Concours d'Elegance judging (it passed, and the car placed 2nd in class at MB StarFest 2008). This review was not requested by anyone at the shop; I just wanted to relay my experience with them over the years, and that I've always been treated very well by Axel and his staff. Note: They are located right next door to a car rental agency. If I didn't need a rental, I've even been given courtesy rides by Jim or the other staff to the local BART station (Dublin/Pleasanton) if I've dropped off the car near closing time. read more

The technicians may be knowledgeable and skillful in the repair, but I must submit my opinion after using its service twice (AC service), within a month. I brought my '05 SL in for AC service in late June because it wasn't blowing cold air; a few hours later I was told it was serviced and ready to be picked up. While there, the technician told me my low pressure refrigerant hose has a small leak, and the leakage was "Sniffed at the leakage rate of half an ounce a year", but my AC should probably get me through this summer at the very least. It seemed fair so I paid the $236 and took the car home. Three and a half weeks later, my AC was blowing warm air again and I later discovered it was due to the loss of freon, so much for that "Half an ounce a year leakage rate". This makes me wonder if a pressure leak down test was ever performed prior to recharge of my AC system, as a significant leak like mine would be very obvious during the vacuum leak down test. Anyhow, since I am a retired jet mechanic, and have owned and worked on older Mercedes before, I decided to replace the AC refrigerant hose myself as I did not need to evacuate the system due to complete freon loss. After the hose replacement, I stopped by and talked with Axel about this issue; I asked if he will extend a discount to "Recharge" my AC a second time, to which Axel said "Why should I? The work procedure will be the same as the first time you brought the car to us". Reluctantly, I chose to let him work on my car the second time because its close to home and I can walk back later to pick up the car. I just wish they could be a little more forthcoming and admit what they stated as a minuscule leak was mistakenly estimated. Its not about the money but of the attitude I received. On the other hand, Mark the office person was very courteous on both occasions. I paid another $236 to get the AC serviced, and so far, its still blowing cold air after I replaced that hose. Since then, I got myself a Mercedes STAR diagnostic software and computer system. I have so far, done my own R&R on the Active Body Control front valve block, flushed and refilled the ABC fluid twice, performed the Rodeo on the ABC system, flushed and refilled the automatic transmission fluid with filter change.....well worth the $$$ spent on the STAR diagnostic system. read more
