I've been to the German American Society several times over the years for different types of events from high school award banquets to a wedding reception to even a wrestling event. And honestly, that variety kind of says a lot about the place. The space itself feels like a classic beer hall, and yes, it's a bit dated...but in a way that adds to the charm rather than takes away from it. It's very distinctly German with all the nods to heritage, families, and places in Germany throughout the decor, but there's also this subtle American nostalgia layered in. It almost feels a little 70s/80s in spots, which somehow works. It's not sleek or modern, but it's also very clearly not trying to be. Food-wise, I'd call it solid but not standout. The sausages are juicy and flavorful, and I did notice the sauerkraut is much milder than what you typically get at the grocery store (not a bad thing, just different than expected). But the real reason to go isn't the food, it's the vibe. There's something about the place that feels genuine and rooted in tradition. I noticed the cornerstone says "by Germans, for Germans," and that stuck with me. As someone with strong German heritage on both sides of my family, it kind of hits in a way I didn't expect. It feels like a space that celebrates where people come from. Not a trendy spot, not a polished venue--but that's exactly the point. Stopped here for Stein Night, and boy was I in for a treat. Brauts, sauerkraut, beer, schnitzel, and a live German band! If you weren't having fun, you were wrong. This is a large gathering hall with two main rooms, a stage, and 2 bars (from what I could tell). It's a basic gathering hall, decorated in traditional German decor. Kind of a good timey, nothing fancy, feel to it. To be transparent, the food took over an hour from ordering it, but that was just more time for beer, music, and great company. I wasn't mad. They have a variety of events throughout the year, and I definitely recommend trying it out...no matter if you're German or not! read more

I have frequented GAS for years for their various festivals. They always throw very organized and smoothly run events. I love coming for fall Oktoberfest and winter Bockfest. With two levels, and an outdoor area, there is plenty of places to order authentic german beer. I enjoy the authentic garb, and music played during events. The food is out of this world, such good schnitzel and pretzels to keep your stomach full. Highly recommend stopping here for events no matter your background. read more

Went to a wedding rehearsal dinner here and it was lovely. Nice big venue with a cool looking old fashioned bar set-up. It looked straight out of a Toulouse-Lautrec painting. Kicking myself that I didn't get a picture. The bartender said they have a full kitchen and staff, so the food, of any cuisine desired, can be made by them or catered in. Not sure who made the food we were served. Parking was easy- there's a large private lot- but when we got to the building we had no idea where to go. Would have been very helpful to have signs posted. There were at least 2 parties going on at once, and it was awkward to have to peek in every door to find out if we were in the right place. I understand that the bride & groom could have put up a sign, but what venue doesn't have the ability to put up signs? I feel like that's something they should provide, a total no-brainer. The building was apparently used as a meeting place for German Americans for decades after WW2, and there are lots of pics/artwork/display cases of their history. My husband was born and raised in Germany. He loves attending events at the German American Society but HATES the crowds (even thought he is a very sociable person)! We always have a great time with great people and great food but dont ever stay long because the sheer amount of people. Thank you for the fun times! read more

Went to Oktoberfest and they put on a good event. The food was very tasty. Especially the brats and kraut. Place was very crowded and lines were long. Beer stations were everywhere so not a big worry but the lines were still long. You had to buy tickets to get food which seemed a little annoying. Beers were a little pricey at $6 for a normal plastic cup. This event really is just about drinking a lot of beer. read more

THE BEST Oktoberfest celebration in the Omaha area, bar none. Three separate bands in different parts of the event; multiple food service areas, and most importantly, even more beer service locations. Oh, plenty of bathroom facilities, too -- maybe that's as important as the beer! read more

I attended a wedding reception here once and more recently, a friend's birthday party. There was plenty of parking and the set up inside was very nice with round tables on one side and a buffet on the other. Lots of room in the middle for a band or DJ and dancing. The bar area is almost in a separate room so not a prominent feature. Decorated with German flags, crests, and large posters. The food was simple but excellent German fare (see photo). Went to the Oktoberfest today. I had AWESOME chicken, kraut, and German potato salad! They also had plenty of choices of German beers as well as the ceremonial tapping of the keg by the Homebrew club. Polka music by the Barry Boyce Band in the south hall was great. It was an awesome time all around. I'll be back next year and for other events. This place is a hidden gem in Omaha! read more

Jamie Hendrickson and his staff at GA did a great job for our recent wedding reception! His service and work with us in the preparation was great, the event ran perfectly smooth and on top of it all the food was GREAT! The fried chicken, roasted potatoes, and roast pork are all unbelievably delicious! All night our guests raved bout the food and the venue and the excellent service of the staff. We hosted a Celebration of Life recently, and everything went as smoothly and nicely as possible. Chelle the coordinator was a calm, cool, thoughtful presence throughout the process. The food and drinks were wonderful, the space worked wonderfully, the tech. was just right for our needs. I appreciated the way Chelle and the staff worked to make sure we were getting a plan that worked for us, focusing on what was important, and getting plenty of value for the price. Great place to hold events such as weddings and conferences. They also have one of the area's largest Octoberfest celebrations! There is also a brewers club, language classes, board gamer nights, wurst club, cooking and gardening classes and activities, the list goes on. What a lot of people don't know is on most Friday nights they host a "Keller Night" at the lower level south bar (The Ratskellär) which is open to club members and the general public (all ages welcome) as well. They offer bar services until close and an ever changing weekly menu of food from 5pm to 8pm when the kitchen closes. Its a very welcoming atmosphere there. Just married this past weekend. Never been behind the scenes of a wedding before so I didn't know what to expect. I always hear of glitches and things not being perfect. I thought I'd be prepared. I was working with Chelle and at first she seemed great until it got closer to the wedding. She started forgetting things, important things like we decided to go with plated instead of buffet and we constantly kept having to remind her that it was a plated dinner.. if I would have saw those red flags! We had the ceremony on the patio. Once we were ready to go in for the reception is when things go horribly wrong. When we had our tasting we had planned our meal and had a kiddo plate and planned what we were going to have for the kids. They were totally forgotten! 30 kids with no food. I also have family with gluten allergy and had requested an alternate for them, they were made but never given out. They made same meals for adults and kids. The waitresses then went to every table and asked "do you think your kid will eat this?" And if the parent said "no" the waitress response was "good cause we don't have enough food!" This was just 1 problem with wait staff. They also started taking food off the tables in record time.. my bridesmaid had gotten her food and went to the bathroom to wash her hands, she got back and there was no food. As people were eating and they were picking up full plates including mine. We ate at 730, so next was dancing. We cut the cake at around 8, then announced for our first dance. As we were dancing they started cutting the cakes and having them come through the dance floor while we were out there. By 9, the security guard took it upon himself to predict fights and regulate how people were dancing. My friend who was also our officiate was kicked out for lude dancing along with our other friend. Once they were causing a scene in the parking lot, that's when my husband and I found out and we went outside. Manager or staff did not notify us of any of the actions of the hot headed security guard decided to find out what was going on. As we were outside, at 930 the dj came out to ask why the lights had been turned on. We had the hall until 12. I asked my bridesmaid to go have them turn them back off. Staff started picking up my centerpieces while people were sitting at the tables. With the lights on and staff picking up tables, my guests thought it was over. I walked back in at 945 and my whole side of family was gone. My reception was ruined. We hung around until about 1130 and tried to round up as many people to meet at a bar. Chelle or staff never came to me throughout the whole night. No call the next day. My mom and husbands mom on Monday came to pick up our decorations and conveniently Chelle was absent. The assistant Amy was there. They expressed all of the problems that went on during the reception.. she had an excuse for every issue and said it was our faults on every problem. We decided to call Chelle Tuesday. She had no response for us. I can't get my time back from my reception! They are not willing to compensate us for all the trouble we had. I know this is a long review but there was a LOT that went on and no resolution, no apologies, nothing! Least I can do is warn everyone and express my sadness of how this all went down. read more

We joined over 3 years ago after attending our 2nd Octoberfest at the club. We now enjoy Friday evening in the Ratskeller for their Friday Skeller nights.
