Via Farina was serving pizza that night, and I was excited to see my favorite, the Fratello, on the menu. The pizza came out quickly and was just as delicious as always. When we arrived, the place was completely full, so we were added to the waitlist. Even though there was a wait, the hostess was incredibly friendly and made the experience much better. I didn't catch her name, but she recommended several nearby spots where we could grab a drink while we waited. Our table ended up being ready sooner than expected, which was a nice surprise. The live music was fantastic and really added to the atmosphere. The bar was well organized with only a short wait, even with the crowd. The cocktails were fine, but they didn't stand out as much as the rest of the experience. Overall, this is a beautiful place for a date night, especially if you enjoy live music, great pizza, and a fun atmosphere. We'll definitely be back.

I attended an event here (Boomer Radio Sock Hop). The place is very nice. Parking lot would be…read moresuitable for most events, I think, but since there were A LOT of people at this event we weren't able to find a space in the lot. I really liked that there were two separate spaces on this floor, so there was a room where people were dancing to loud music, and another room that was quiet, spacious, and well-lit where people could eat and have conversations. I really appreciated that and it definitely added to my enjoyment of the event. The room where we ate was rather plain (still really nice). The other room was unique and beautiful, and has a patio. A downside is that there is a separate event space downstairs, and if something loud is going on down there you might hear it (and feel the floor vibrate). So that could be really problematic for some events. I also have a complaint about the bathroom. It is quite narrow and cramped. The ladies' room has 5 stalls, which honestly is not enough for a large event, especially since there are only a couple sinks and not a space for a larger mirror. Also - a HUGE peeve of mine - the doors of most of the stalls hang in a closed position, so to see if they are occupied you have to bend over to check if feet are there, in this very narrow space. It's not cool at all, and it's really annoying because the latches are designed in such a way that with a small amount of extra thought put in, they could indicate if the stall is occupied or empty. The building overall has been renovated so nicely and someone really dropped the ball on this aspect. It is a really lovely space, the event was enjoyable. I DEFINITELY appreciated not having to yell to have a conversation; this makes the venue a great place and accessible to groups that include guests who don't want to spend an entire event in a loud room.

I've been to the German American Society several times over the years for different types of events…read morefrom high school award banquets to a wedding reception to even a wrestling event. And honestly, that variety kind of says a lot about the place. The space itself feels like a classic beer hall, and yes, it's a bit dated...but in a way that adds to the charm rather than takes away from it. It's very distinctly German with all the nods to heritage, families, and places in Germany throughout the decor, but there's also this subtle American nostalgia layered in. It almost feels a little 70s/80s in spots, which somehow works. It's not sleek or modern, but it's also very clearly not trying to be. Food-wise, I'd call it solid but not standout. The sausages are juicy and flavorful, and I did notice the sauerkraut is much milder than what you typically get at the grocery store (not a bad thing, just different than expected). But the real reason to go isn't the food, it's the vibe. There's something about the place that feels genuine and rooted in tradition. I noticed the cornerstone says "by Germans, for Germans," and that stuck with me. As someone with strong German heritage on both sides of my family, it kind of hits in a way I didn't expect. It feels like a space that celebrates where people come from. Not a trendy spot, not a polished venue--but that's exactly the point. It's got character, history, and a sense of identity that you don't find everywhere.

It has a lot more newly opened establishments than the Old Market, so I'm not positive how long it will stay as hoppin' as it is now. I've been to a few bars and restaurants in The Capitol District, and most of them were great, and a few were pretty decent. My favorites are J. Gilberts (for a fancy dinner), Let It Fly (for a delicious burger), Moe and Curly's (for Karaoke), DJ's Dugout (to catch a game) and Roxxy (for a fun 80s/90s bar atmosphere). I've also been to Net Par for a golf Yelp event, Annie's Irish Pub on a pub crawl, and The Stuffed Olive for a drink and some stuffed olives.
