I almost always never go over 80-miles/128-kms, which consumes most of the daylight as well my eBatteries strength. Glenwood was at the best stopping point, and LOS OLMOS LODGE has a monopoly on overnighting in the tiny community, so no dickering about the price. I was assigned the "Sundance" cabin, which was perfectly sized for a solo-cyclist like me. Also essential is "free" WiF, especially since I couldn't get the flat screen monitor to function. I bought a few microwaveable items at the gas/convenience store (also owned by the Los Olmos group), a bit pricy but useful in the well-functioning microwave. Some ice was available in the community cente/kitchen/ fridge. The firm bed was welcome; All-in-all, it was pretty nice, worth reserving ahead as no vacancies exist on the weekends. UNTIL midnight, when a raccoon (or some other varmit) began excavating in a crawl space underneath. Despite my ready-to-rest body needing uninterrupted sleep, it would be a few hours before the critter finally slowed and I could do so, too. I really should have gotten some kind of rebate, but just wanted to get gone, continuing my cycle North on US180 toward NM12/Reserve. I certainly had no desire to go "The Catwalk", a prime local attraction a few mile/clicks away--walking require, but I am bicycling! "LOS OLMOS is an OK--and the only place for reservations--to stay. But, whatever you do, stay in any cabin other than SUNDANCE!

We are in the lodge which is an entire home and very cozy, but there are also cottages that are smaller but look charming. Outside our bedroom in the Lodge lie the Chiricahua Mountains - it is almost as if they were in the backyard. Near Portal and the local store/cafe, it is a convenient short drive to get what you need or take a break from cooking. Bill is an incredible host - if you need anything or local information, he is friendly and very helpful. This is a perfect place to stay if you like the outdoors and/or want to explore the Chiricahuas. I have been staying different, cooler spots this summer in Arizona (Alpine, Pinetop and now this area) to avoid the brutal Phoenix heat, and by far these are the nicest, most reasonably priced accommodations I have found. I was so relaxed, sitting on the porch, watching the kids learn to throw a lasso, play horse shoes and even learn to cook off a chuck wagon!! Well I actually got off the porch for that!! Cow Camp Cabins is a great place for families and friends to take a step back, breath some fresh air and enjoy the country!!

At some point, this will be a nice place to spend a day or an overnight, but that day is not here…read moreyet. At the present moment, the hot springs has two pools open. One is tiny and maybe fits 2 actual adults, except the temperature in the spring is 110-111. That makes it very uncomfortable to sit all the way in. There is a pipe that pipes in cool water if you want it, but even with the thing running full blast, the water will not get below 108. Again, too hot for most people. The second tub fits 8 people although it is quite shallow. The temperature of that one was 102-103, which made it more comfortable to stay in for the entire 45 minute session. Now, here are the reasons why I am only giving the place 3 stars: 1. The place is undergoing major construction projects, resulting in large piles of dirt, yellow police tape, and poor signage, so that people coming to the site have no idea where to check in. To get there, you have to drive down a one-way sand road that goes underneath a railroad trestle. The area is not accessible to emergency vehicles. 2. There is no way to communicate with the person in charge without walking all the way back to the main office. 3. People are not clear on how long their sessions are supposed to be. There is no signage or instructions. The people right before us stayed in the pool for a full hour and then stood around on the deck getting dressed while we were getting in. What should be obvious from what I just said: there is no cleaning of anything between customers. 4. The existing pools have no privacy whatsoever. The owners are in the process of building a lot more pools that also have no privacy whatsoever. 5. The atmosphere surrounding the pools leaves something to be desired; not just the big piles of dirt, but the fact that in the evening you can hear the unskilled musical screamings coming from the Blue Moon bar in Radium. So, not peaceful, although inadvertently hilarious.
