Pearl Farmers Market is one of my favorite weekend activities!…read more This farmers market has been going on for a couple of years and it just keeps getting bigger and better with each year. On Saturdays they host more of the classic "farmers market" where you can find local produces from around the area. However, on Sundays they host a "makers market" where is mainly produce and stuff made by amazing local businesses. The market has grown so much in the last couple of years that now truly covers the entire outdoor space of The Pearl. For the summer they changed their hours and markets start at 9am and I believe in winter they will move it back to 10am. They also host a couple evening markets on the weekdays for those looking to stay out of the heat. This market is always such a great time and it is very family and pet-friendly! Make sure to check them out on an upcoming weekend.

I am annoyed by the $13 a day parking. No by the hour! So the Pearl in a little over 3 years has gone from no charge to $3 then $8 and now $13 for parking under the highway.

Mark and Kelley love their animals. We've been to the farm multiple times and have seen first hand how the pigs are raised and how well they are treated. They are Animal Welfare Approved, a certification program that audits and certifies farms raising their animals humanely, outdoors on pasture. When we bought our second hog, we were even able to pick it ourselves, under Mark's guidance, and about six months later we received it, all cut up to our specifications. The other point that I'd like to highlight is how helpful Kelley was in dealing with the processor. My husband is very picky, and he wanted everything from snout to tail, along with the skin and of course the organs. Who wouldn't want to eat a liver from a pig that has been raised on pasture, homemade feed and peanuts? He also wanted some special cuts, so he could make his own prosciutto and cure some other special pieces. Kelley has been amazing and made sure that we received everything in the way we specified. And now to the meat. It is absolutely wonderful, hands-down the best pork I've ever eaten. And believe me, I've eaten my fair share of pork. I grew up in Germany with one uncle a farmer and the other a butcher and have eaten our own pork all my life, but even I must admit, South Texas Heritage Pork is even better!

I would LOVE to write a review about the actual products from South Texas Heritage Pork…read more Unfortunately, all I can write about is my customer experience, and here's why. STHP sets up a booth at the Pearl Brewery Farmers Market each Saturday. The first time I stopped by looking for some pork belly, I was told that they sold out and that you have to get there early to get some. However, the lady working gave me a flyer with their contact info and told me that I could e-mail ahead to reserve whatever I wanted. The first time I tried to e-mail to reserve some pork belly, Kelly told me that they wouldn't have any that weekend, but that they should have some the next. I e-mailed back and said that was cool, and asked her to reserve me a pork belly for the next weekend. I e-mailed AGAIN earlier this week because I never heard back, asking to reserve the pork belly a second time. She e-mailed back and said that it wouldn't be a problem. That about brings us up to today. Early(ish) this morning, I dragged my hungover hubby out of bed and rounded up the dogs. We live in the Stone Oak area, so it's quite a drive to downtown. Our only objective was to pick up the pork belly that I had reserved. When I got to the booth, I waited politely behind two people who seemed to want to chat with the woman working about the farm, the pigs, the pictures, et cetera. It felt like I waited for at least ten minutes before the woman working acknowledged me. I explained that I had e-mailed to reserve a pork belly, and she said, "Oops! Oh no, we sold it! And you e-mailed and I confirmed it and everything!" Boyfriend is an easygoing dude. He said, "Well, it happens," and dragged me away to have lunch. HOWEVER. I'm not as easygoing, and I am PISSED. Seriously, the only reason I got up and drove across town with my dogs in tow was to pick up that pork belly. We left the farmers market empty-handed. We stopped at Central Market on the way home and got a pork belly there. Would have been a LOT easier to just go there in the first place, and that's what I'll be doing next time I want to make pork for dinner. The farm sure looks nice, and apparently they treat the animals very humanely (which is the only reason I went with two stars instead of one). But since I wasn't offered any sort of discount or really ANYTHING for the massive inconvenience they put me through, I'll never know if their stuff is good or not, because I will never attempt to do business with them again. My patience is officially exhausted.

This shop sells fudge, truffles, candied apples, and - what I came for - ice cream! They had a lot of ice cream flavors to choose from, a least a couple dozen. The smiling young woman working behind the ice cream counter offered to give tastes, but I had already figured out which flavors I wanted. I chose two scoops in a cup, one of Cappucino Chip and the other Turtle Cheesecake. They have several tables to sit at, some along a hallway and more in a back room. I took a seat and was in awe of the huge scoops given. The Cappuccino Chip had a mild flavor (I prefer it stronger) but a fair number of tiny chocolate chips. The Turtle Cheesecake had an excellent cheesecake flavor with swirls of caramel, praline pecans, and caramel-filled mini turtles. I'm usually not fond of nuts in my ice cream but I actually enjoyed the pralines. In my humble opinion, there were too few turtles. But I still loved it. If you're in the mood for a cold, creamy treat while visiting the Alamo, you'll find this to be the perfect place to visit.

They also carry a number of jarred items (honey, molasses, pickles, jams, sauces) as well as locally raised meats and I enjoyed going aisle by aisle looking my through their inventory I was also happy to see that they carry a number of gluten free items, including flour and pastas that I'm able to find at my local grocery store. I also loved that they have fresh baked breads and desserts, as well as sandwiches to order to go (didn't try any on this visit, but they looked excellent online!). I did pick up a bit of their jalapeño beef jerky which wasn't super tough like jerky sometimes is and also was super salty, which was appreciated. The staff seemed friendly and ready to help. Across from the store is a bbq spot with seating and I'll be sure to visit there on my next visit. The ONLY reason why I couldn't give a 5-star review this time is I had a very hard time finding the prices on a number of items (especially in their freezer/refrigerated sections). It made it a bit inconvenient and I didn't want to keep going up to the counter to check the costs each time. Other than that, I'd highly recommend a visit!

The bakery and cheese sections are equally impressive. I mean honestly, so is the meat section and the fish section and the bulk section and the coffee and the floral.... You get the point. It's so beautiful that I like to pick one up to take as a hostess gift whenever I'm invited to a gathering nearby. It impresses and is delicious. If you don't want to pick up food as a gift, check out the deliciously scented candles. You can't walk away empty handed. Also, don't snooze on the gelato station. They offer yummy flavors.

What makes it stand out from the other HEB stores is the prepared foods and a couple of food booths that you can find in the store. I usually visit H-E-B Central marketplace, to purchase some of my Christmas sides and entrées. They also have the delicious pies at H-E-B sells but with some twists. For example, one of their fruit pies is in four different fruit selections. Service, of course, is up to Heb standards so spectacular and this one has the Christmas feel for me. The prices are a bit higher than another HEB, but the selection is different, as well. This makes it ideal for trying to find items that might not be sold in other HEBs.
