We live in LA and my daughter lives in Honolulu so we order a lot of flowers to be delivered to her. Coming from a family background who owned a flower shop, I can appreciate the artistry and costs it takes to own a small biz flower shop. There are 2 shops we normally shop at for florals. One is a bit more "hawaiian and tropical" and this one. Gentle Beast has a wide assortment of flowers that feel like they're not just from Hawaii. I feel like since she lives on the island she gets to see those flowers often. I like Gentle Beast because they use a variety of different flowers and they make her think of LA! Price is fair, everything in hawaii is expensive so I feel like they are just right. What is nice is his delivery fee. It's a normal cost. There's another shop closer to her and they charge double what GB does. I don't get it. So all in all, I appreciate the creativity and the price and the professionalism of GB. When I first saw the flowers I was absolutely flabbergasted with how gorgeous they were as I never had a good experience with ordering flowers from any shop before (i.e when I order flowers, they usually come and I am somewhat underwhelmed, but not this time!!) I asked for the flowers to be delivered to a hotel to surprise my partner and not only did he create a stunning and gorgeous arrangement but he perfectly hit all of my preferences. I asked for pretty, bright colors because that is what my partner likes for flowers and she absolutely loved it the arrangement. I'm staying at Hyatt Centric and the ladies at the front desk asked me where I got the flowers from. They usually send their guests to another local floral shop but I immediately told them to start sending them to Kai at Gentle Beast Floral. I'm impressed. I grew up in the islands. However, I've been in the mainland for quite some time. My parents are still in Oahu. For Mother's Day, my wife (not from Hawaii) wanted to send a special bouquet to my mom for Mother's Day, and to celebrate life in general. Since we're not in Oahu in person, she researched a lot of flower spots online, and really valued reviews, photos both in yelp, instagram and various websites. My wife was impressed w/ Gentle Beast's story, Kai's background in Milan and Tokyo, as well as the fact that they're using seasonal flowers from around the globe. My mom was quite impressed and happy with the first delivery! She said it's nothing like she's ever seen before! However, my wife, who's very critical since she loves flowers, wasn't happy when she saw the photos since it didn't meet her expectations based on photos and descriptions on the website. My wife wasn't looking for a refund or a replacement, she just wanted to voice her opinion. However what impressed me is Kai's goal to make sure his customer is more than happy! He made sure to make another batch right away and ensured it was made to my wife's expectations - I am very thankful for this. Kai, you have gone above and beyond. Just moved to the island a few months ago, and had been following Gentle Beast for their unique and beautiful arrangements. Having just moved to the island a few months ago, I saw Kai was having his first Gentle Beast Academy! An afternoon to learn about flowers, how to care for them, and make one hand tied bouquet and arrangement. The two hour workshop easily turned into four hours, but we were never rushed. Kai also made us delicious lattes (with the latte art!) and served us delicious desserts from Senia, as well as, bubbly. It was a great time learning how to put together bouquets and arrangements, and he was also so helpful in putting together the final touches/providing feedback! Interestingly enough, a family friend had fallen on a walk the morning I went to this workshop, and the hand tied bouquet was the perfect get-well soon/pick me up gift. This past week I heard from a mutual good friend of our good friend being released from the hospital and immediately coming off that call, I quickly went on yelp to find a good florist. (My sister Summer is a florist, but lost her floral designer) I chose the one who not only had 5 stars, but had the NICEST designs in my opinion from looking at the pictures. A couple hours later, I was at my friend's doorstep. So, I chose Gentle Beast in Ward Ctr across of Paul Brown salon. I placed my order on their website and got to specify the color scheme of the floral arrangement and the approximate time i would pick it up since it was too late to order same day delivery. Gentle Beast is a huge space and is locked so you have to ring the bell to go in. Only the owner was there when I arrived. His name is Kai and is Chinese/Vietnamese. He named his company after his lab who is a "Gentle beast". He used to be located in Kakaako in another store that for the life of me has now slipped my mind. Kai was so personable, friendly and artistically creative. I told him that I loved his designs, which had that contemporary Asian ethereal design using unique flowers you don't typically find in local florists. He said he imports all his flowers from Japan and the Netherlands. No wonder! I spent $115 on my arrangement (that's including the tax). So, if you are in the market for a floral arrangement, please go to Gentle Beast in Ward Center and see Kai. He is honestly the BEST. I chose PINK and etc. The GBF box on the website photos flowers are roses, orchids etc. Fantastic! I expect the same arrangement to be delivered. It's a high end flower boutique with blooms flown in from the Netherlands, Japan and other faraway locales. They do offer classes so Go online to check their monthly class offerings. Kai the owner/ floral designer has excellent taste-in flowers, wine and dessert! Making the wreaths was fun and empowering! Hey I can do this! I'm not an expert in flowers and didn't want to say anything at the time of pick up because I wasn't sure. When we got home and watered the arrangement, some of leaves and floral are brown. Also, some of the sweet pea flowers fell off. Don't get me wrong, the set is beautiful, but for $275 I'll have to rethink it. Also, I left a comment asking for mimosa flowers, there was no reply back (that's bad customer service). Obviously, the mimosas are in the arrangement, which I'm very grateful for. On a most recent interaction, I purchased a holiday wreath that they had as a special for the holidays for a friend who long story short is celebrating his first Christmas in the islands. I really love this store! They make beautiful arrangements with flowers that are difficult to find locally. My daughter loves pink peonies so I searched stores to see which ones will provide pink peony arrangements, and found Gentle Beast Floral on YELP. I am glad that I did! it is easy to order online, and I've had them delivered downtown. For my birthday, I received the most BEAUTIFUL bouquet I have ever seen. I could not stop fawning over how delicate & stunning the arrangement was. I really wanted to surprise my wife with something special this year. Read the reviews, went to the store, and picked out what I wanted with the florist guy. He had really nice things to say about the fresh roses they just had flown in from Kyoto Japan. It was Valentine's Day so I planned on spending some money $300. No problem with the price I wanted my wife to just love them!! Well they arrived wrapped in a wet paper towel and all of them had already bloomed. Some of them looking tired (old?). They are pretty flowers but they aren't twice as pretty as what I've gotten before. It's really too bad. Again it's not that they aren't nice flowers they just aren't what I was hoping for. The owner is a super nice guy, and was very helpful. UPDATE: Was contacted by Kai and he offered to replace the flowers for something that my wife may enjoy differently. He also explained to us that this style of bouquet is similar to what you would find in Japan and Europe. Our Community Manager, Jessica Y., had posted a review for Gentle Beast Floral back in December, and I remember marveling at the pictures she provided of the various floral arrangements she had purchased. However, since it was already so close to Christmas, I made a mental note of this business for future reference. And sure enough, when January rolled around, I had three birthdays to plan for, one of them being my Mother's. So I pulled that mental note back into focus and visited the business' website to see what my options were. What I really love about GBF is that it has this crisp, clean, no B.S. presentation. In some ways, the owner Kai speaks not so much through his words but through his floral arrangements, which you can readily see through the different pictures provided on his website. The ease of access in terms of ordering and selecting arrangements is also a blessing. When I had been in the midst of ordering, I believe the selections were for hand tied bouquets, personalized seasonal flower arrangements (with containers), english garden baskets (with a to-go option as well), and seasonal tropical garden arrangements. There's also options for celebratory additions to floral arrangements as well. Since I had never ordered a floral arrangement from GBF, I figured the English Garden Basket To Go would be a good first purchase due to its size, cost, and gorgeous lauhala box. Once you make a selection, you're then prompted for a delivery date (or date you'd like to pick-up) and then input payment information. There's also a section for notes in case there's a special request you'd like to make. I wasn't sure what to put at the time, so just left it blank. It wasn't until I started following GBF on Instagram that one day, a flower had caught my attention: the Japanese Sweet Pea Flower. It then dawned on me that my Mother loved orchids, so I had emailed Kai to see if it would be possible to add some of those to the arrangements, or have flowers similar to the Japanese Sweet Pea, and he had replied that he would try his best to add them but that they are on the more expensive side, so I told him it wasn't a problem if it couldn't be done, and that if I needed to pay extra, I could do so as well. I then anxiously awaited pick-up day. Now, I would recommend either putting in a time for pick-up for your orders or talking with Kai before pick-up and/or delivery dates because I had just decided to drive over close to opening hours when I had gotten the call that my order was ready, which was a blessing in disguise because if it hadn't I would've made a major oopsie. Pick-up was also a breeze as well since the directions to GBF is easy to follow and as long as you reference Google Maps, you'll be able to figure out where to park by. Kai was also really sweet in person and the floral arrangement was much more gorgeous than I had ever anticipated. He had even added some Japanese Sweet Pea Flowers because of my previous reference and I remember my husband and I driving away with the arrangement feeling excited for my Mother and anxious to see how she'd react. And sure enough, my Mother was absolutely delighted with her arrangement and had thought that it was actually fake until she had touched one of the petals. I had explained to her about GBF and the owner Kai's experiences, and she agreed that he was a world class craftsman in floral arrangements with a European flair. So I made a mental note to pretty much get flowers from GBF for my Mother on every occasion I could. Overall, if you're looking for a floral arrangement or bouquet for a loved one or even just for celebratory reasons, I would highly recommend Gentle Beast Floral. If there's anything that the pandemic has taught me, it's that not all heroes wear capes--some of them carry shears, a bottle of bleach, and the knowledge and skills to curate an arrangement that will literally make you stop and smell the roses. One of the girls in our team just recently lost her grandfather, so I rounded up the girls and wanted to see if they would all be willing to pitch in for a floral arrangement for her. A lot of the businesses I saw either had really expensive arrangements, delivery fee was ridiculously priced or they couldn't make anything on such short notice, as I was looking to having it delivered the next day. I then came across Kai, of Gentle Beast Floral - looked up his IG and was extremely blown away by his amazing work. Sent him a DM and he responded in about 10 minutes, no kidding. Luckily, he was able to take our request on such short notice & had the colors of flowers I was looking for, too! Payment was sent via email and was such an easy transaction. When the arrangement was done, he sent me a picture of it and it was just as amazing as I anticipated it to be. Kai was the sweetest and even delivered the arrangement, HIMSELF. All while doing so, he always kept me updated that he was on his way to deliver it, and also notified me when our girl got the arrangement. A Summers Garden! Is exactly what we got. I don't even know where to start because I've been getting flowers from Kai years ago! Throughout these years I've witnessed how his work has elevated in so many levels. Kai used to work out of his home and now has his own shop where we can all witness his fabulousness. I initially met Kai through a coworker who also loves peonies. We just bombarded him with peonies and our friendship blossomed from there. Anyway! Fast forward...my now fiancé decided to contact Kai for flowers for our anniversary and engagement arrangements. I received the box flowers first and they are gorgeous! Prior to moving to Hawaii, I'd buy bouquets every week to put on my bedroom windowsill. However, the lack of variety, cost, and overall temperature in Hawaii discouraged me from keeping up with that habit. Thankfully I met Kai and Gentle Beast Floral. Kai has an esthetic that isn't common in Hawaii. He likes to work with non-native flowers, which means he imports his flowers from all over the world. His arrangements are thoughtful, beautiful and lush. Kai's floral designs remind me of centerpieces I'd see at weddings in the mainland or even abroad. He incorporates many different varieties and textures in each one of his works. Also his pieces are reasonably priced and he customizes them to suit each clients tastes. The last arrangement I received was still beautiful days later!
