Stopped into Geno's Place hoping for a solid neighborhood spot, but it fell short this time. The place has potential -- a nice local crowd and a decent setup -- but the service was pretty slow, and it didn't seem very organized. The food was okay at best. The bartender was friendly enough but clearly overwhelmed, and there didn't seem to be enough staff for how busy it was. I wanted to like it -- the atmosphere has that classic South Side bar feel -- but the experience just didn't deliver. Maybe it was an off night, but based on this visit, it's hard to recommend without some improvements in service and consistency. I mean the staff was arguing in the kitchen and you could hear it at the bar. They have some work to do. read more

I celebrated my birthday here on Friday, 8/15, and it was a terrible experience. My family rented five tables on the patio, and guests came in from Indiana and Detroit to celebrate with me. Unfortunately, the night was ruined by poor service and unprofessional management. Staff didn't even acknowledge it was my birthday and tried to charge me and some of my guests at the door, even though they arrived before 10. The music was disappointing -- they catered only to one crowd and ignored all of my requests. I was originally told I could have my own DJ with insurance, but management later changed their word and said no. Inside was extremely hot, we had to beg just to get water, and our food didn't arrive until almost 10pm. I didn't even get to eat my cake there because I was so upset at how poorly my party was handled. When I asked to speak to a manager, I was told none were present and that "I should have picked somewhere else." With more than 20 people in our group, we ended up leaving early to continue the celebration elsewhere. This was supposed to be a special night, but the lack of professionalism and customer service ruined it. I will never return and do not recommend this lounge to anyone. read more

It was an ok experience. It was crowded and the music was too loud. The service sucked. It took 15 minutes to get my drink order and she got it wrong. I will NEVER go back even though they do have a space to smoke cigars. read more

It's like going to cheers for Black people. Good food.... Good music.... Friendly people!

The atmosphere at Geno's is casual and bustling. It's a popular spot, especially among tourists, with outdoor seating available. The restaurant is known for its vibrant decor and neon signage. The food is great I give it a 10 read more

Food was delicious!!! Portions were generous as well. We will definitely visit again.

Nice chill spot. Music could be a lot better. It's so much R & B available for the DJ to keep playing the same tired songs. The food is good for a fair price. Nice looking ladies from time to time. Black owned business. A little remolding would do it well. read more

Whoever is the daytime cook on 8/25/2023 at 12:30 pm needs to come on out that kitchen! I couldn't believe how salty and over seasoned the grilled shrimp and fried chicken was. The Mac was way off and the greens and red beans and rice were bland as hell. I was excited when my boyfriend brought our food bcuz I hadn't had Genos in a long time so imagine how pissed I was. I guess I gotta stick to the drunk hours of ordering food from here again read more

Geno's is a cool place to chill, eat, dance and drink. I love the new remodel. It's so cool to come back the sense of normalcy after COVID. My only complaint Is they need more staff to clean up. And bartenders good vibes though. read more

if I can give this no stars I would this place is over crowded ppl spill drinks on you because you can barely walk the food is over cooked the bartenders are very drunk and can barley take orders because they are already drunk I highly don't recommend this place but the place over the metra tracks is way better and the ppl are way nicer read more

If you get a Carry Out HOPE your meal is decent. I got the turkey wing and dressing and I am so disappointed. When I opened the container I didn't know that DRY OVER COOKED IN THE MICROWAVE STUFF was the mac n cheese. I absolutely could not eat it. The greens tasted like vinegar. Another time I got short ribs to go and they had been cooked too long in the microwave also. No more Geno's for me. If you eat there, where you can see your food, it's ok but if you are getting food to go, they will burn you! That's sneaky!!!!! read more

Food was delicious! Great ambiance and drinks. Definitely a spot for locals in area! Everyone knew everyone!

I love this hole in the wall. The food is delicious. I've had my share of too many drinks a few times in this establishment. I usually go after work. It's an older crowd. We eat, drink, talk s*** and listen to good music. read more

Ordered 3 piece catfish dinner ( fries came with the order) side of mixed greens and spaghetti. Disappointed with the order ... the food was not palatable at all . I have lived 2 blocks away from this place for 13 years and decided "why not?". I am glad that I did and have. The food has consistently been good and the drinks are pretty standard for a bar/restaurant- there good but you will probably be drinking several to get buzzed if at your favorite hole in the wall you just need 1 good 1. The music is nice but on the days and times I've gone it seems to be an after thought but that's not a bad thing as most people seem to go there eat, drink, and be merry. It's an older crowd so I dont worry about typical young spot BS. Only drawback is that they charge a cover after 9 or 10 on the weekends. read more

I would never again spend my money in this dingy, smelly, dirty place. The male heavy set manager is very disrespectful. The kitchen is dirty. There were rat traps in the kitchen. If I could have not given this place no stars I would have. It should be torn down. read more

Absolutely love this place laid back atmosphere. You can have a drink go to the cigar lounge. Play slots, eat some good soul food.

I have yet to go here for drinks, so my score is based solely on food. If you like good, solid soul food, this is a decent spot. The quality of food is really high and delicious. I usually get the chicken, but the catfish is really good too. I also love the flat pancake cornbread. All of the sides tried are exceptional: the potato salad, the dressing, the sweet potatoes, etc. The reason why I'm not giving 5 stars is because the wait for food can be lengthy and the food for the amount you get is pricey. read more

I visit this place just for the soul food. Now if you have time to sit for some drinks, enjoy that and some wings. I have never been disappointed with the flavor or serving size. My go to meal is the Pre-Thanksgiving Dinner. And the flapjacks that come with it are so delicious. It's always good to me. The drinks are good so be sure to have one or two and grab something to eat as well. read more

The food was horrible! I order a 3pc dark with black eye peas and mac&cheese. The chicken was not done and the sides tasted like they were out of a can. The female bar maid didn't want to serve my friends. She never came to take our order but served people that just sat down. read more

This is fourth time this year that I have had horrible service and bad food. The mixologist (bar maid) was very rude. What happend to Jewel???? The drinks were good, but the food was horrible. They have changed the jumbo shrimp, the perch was fried too hard and not fresh. The wings are black and not fresh.... If I return, I'll be sure to eat before I come! read more

The food is so damn good all the time. You definitely get your moneys worth for food and drinks.

Good food HORRIBLE service at the bar. The older bartender helping me was more interested in engaging her regulars than helping me. Had to ask for a menu twice (15min between requests), asked for water twice (never got it), and had to flag her down for the bill (she wanted to take my payment before giving me my total). The younger woman who took my food order was awesome. She checked in, asked if I had questions, and brought my food & bill out promptly. I ordered to-go, it was packaged well and was good once I got home. I ordered the meatloaf with no gravy, cabbage, and mac and cheese. If I go back, I'll probably place a phone order for pick up. read more

I've been here several times through the years, and Geno's is holding its own. I first discovered this spot when I had to attend several, varied live music performances for a class. I lucked up on an awesome jazz saxophonist the first time, and an equally enjoyable blues vocalist on my second visit. Upon learning that they also served very tasty bar food, as well as soul food dinners, I was hooked! Staff is pleasant, pours aren't stingy, and live music on Mondays and Wednesdays. What's not to love? read more
