Such a cute restaurant, We had the Chicken Katsu with waffle nut and the Loco Moco, both were delicious. The chicken Katsu was light and crispy and the waffle had coconut flavor with a crispy outside and a chewier inside. Served with fruit and whip cream. The Loco Moco was rices in the bottom and a rose style scrambled egged topped with a house made hamburger patty, served with a white gravy and the traditional brown gravy. Everything was cooked perfectly and full of flavor, definitely with coming back to try other items from the menu. Great food, quick kitchen preparation and wonderful service made this for a wonderful meal with friends, we will definitely be back soon.
Today I tried the Genki Benedict. I'm so glad I did. The perfect ratio of Japanese milk bread, spam and poached eggs. The sauce was light and lemony. The potatoes were cooked just the way I like them. I have a few more entrees to try. I can't wait to return.
The location is in a cute boutique mall (antique shops and aikido), with a good amount of dedicated parking. Seating inside is comfortable, decorated in neutral tones, with high ceilings crossed by wood beams. While Japanese food isn't what I would normally think of for breakfast, after trying Genki Kitchen, my whole perspective has changed! Take the thoughtfulness and precision of good Japanese/Hawaiian food and mash it up with fried chicken and eggs benedict, and you've got some out-of-this-world flavors (and a very full and happy stomach). I ordered the Genki Benedict, and the balance of milk (!) bread to egg to spam was spot on. Just the right amount of crunch and saltiness. Also the poach was really perfect. Soft and creamy but not running all over the moment you cut into it. To top it off the yuzu hollandaise (served on the side by default) was sweet, fruity, and creamy. Best hollandaise I've had, hands down! Service was very friendly and informative. Will definitely be back and try their lunch menu as well. The Genki poutine (fries with Japanese curry and an egg) sounds amazing!
Genki is a solid breakfast brunch spot my wife had on her list of places to try. I absolutely love the high ceilings in the space which makes the smaller restaurants feel enormous and spacious. Both times we've been here we were immediately greeted by the host, a younger boy, which added to the warmth of what is most likely a family-run restaurant. That warmth extends to the food offerings which consist of Japanese-Hawaiian-American fusion and comfort food. Their loco moco with a tornado egg is a stunning and delicious dish and I love that it comes with 2 styles of gravy! The yuzu hollondaise has the perfect amount of tang to help cut the richness of the spam and milk bread in the benedict. I feel as though the chicken katsu and waffle was missing an element to really make it perfect. I would have added the katsu sauce or pickled ginger to really elevate it. The okonomiyaki was excellent and I loved the amount of vegetables in it. Overall, I really like Genki for the speed of service, friendliness, and inventive food combinations.
Fantastic quality, creative menu options. Their katsu and bread options have no business being this good. And their potatoes. It's like the universal perfect ideal you have in mind when you want crispy in the outside and soft and juicy on the inside. My wife had the Benedict with the yuzu Hollandaise and I had the chicken and waffles. The spam on her Benedict was surprisingly tangy (in a good way). The serving size on my chicken and waffles was overly generous . . . to the point of being over the top (I couldn't cut into it without spilling a lot onto the table). The coffee was fresh brewed but a little mild and lukewarm to my taste. The interior was a bit sparsely decorated, though the belt-driven ceiling fan system was cool (no pun intended). Minor gripes aside, the quality of the preparations and the friendliness of the staff will bring us back here in the future.
Clean and family ambiance! Food platters are huge servings. You can share! Food was delicious and satisfying! Will be coming back over and over again.
Genki has a lot of potential to do well, although there is still some room for improvement. I really like their Hawaiian-Japanese fusion brunch concept and the menu is straight forward and simple. The Genki Benedict was served without the yuzu hollandaise sauce, which I didn't realize until after the fact. That was partly my fault for not bringing it up, so I didn't get the full experience of the dish. I'm sure it would've tasted even better with the sauce. The potatoes were also a bit cold. The butter, however, was nice and creamy. The Ika Geso was good, lightly battered and fried just the way I prefer and the sauce paired well with it. The Country Fried Katsu was also good, but again, the potatoes were cold. The Curry Chicken Katsu Don was probably the best dish. Overall, the prices are reasonable, the place is clean, and the staff was welcoming. I'd definitely give Genki another try, especially since the concept has a lot of potential.
Stopped in for brunch on a Sunday and it was busy! We were lucky to get a bar seat as the wait time was an hour plus! All of our dishes tasted as good as it looked! This place is quite small for its popularity so get there early as there will probably be a waitlist.
We had SUCH a good experience at Genki Kitchen. It's one of those places where you can immediately tell there's a lot of love behind what they're doing, and knowing it's family-owned made it even better. We definitely ordered enough to get a real feel for the menu and honestly, everything was so good. The Loco Moco was one of my favorites because we tried it with both the brown AND white gravy. The brown gravy was rich, savory and super comforting, but the white gravy surprised me the most because it almost tasted like a creamy clam chowder. I was not expecting that at all, but it worked SO well with the dish. The Katsu Chicken & Waffles was another standout. The chicken was perfectly crispy on the outside and still juicy, and the waffle was fluffy with just enough sweetness. We found out their son had made the waffle batter fresh that morning, along with the whipped cream, and I swear details like that make you appreciate the food even more. The French Toast was beautiful and tasted just as good as it looked. Soft, rich, slightly sweet, with fresh fruit and that homemade whipped cream on top. Definitely one of those dishes everyone at the table keeps taking bites from. We also tried the Beef Udon, which was exactly what I wanted after all the sweet brunch flavors. Tender beef, chewy noodles and a warm, savory broth that was so comforting. And the Japanese Michelada was such a fun surprise. Savory, refreshing, a little spicy and just different enough from a traditional michelada to make it memorable. One of the things I really loved about Genki beyond the food is how intentional they are about supporting other local Sacramento businesses and specialty producers. We're in the Farm-to-Fork Capital, so I LOVE seeing a local family-owned restaurant put that into practice and keep that support within the community. Everything from the flavors to the presentation felt thoughtful and high quality. Truly a 10/10 experience for us. And now I already want to go back because there are way too many things on the menu we didn't get to try.

Genki Kitchen is a unique brunch spot that serves up Japanese inspired brunch and lunch items. It's in a nice and cozy space that can get quite busy. I found the service to be excellent and friendly. The servers were quick as well. On my visit to Genki I had the opportunity to try the loco moco, udon, and tempura. The loco moco was good and came with a good amount of food. It was also presented nicely. They do the thing where it comes with the knife stabbed into the top of the food. There's also a pretty flower on the top that I think is just there for decoration. It's not necessary, but makes for a pretty photo. The best thing about the loco moco was the hamburger on the top. I found it to be of good quality and size - it's not one of those skinny fast food patties. The only thing I wasn't a fan of with the dish was the sauces, which I found to be a bit heavy handed and rich. Eventually all the rice was soggy. As for the udon, I personally found the broth to be much too sweet for my liking. It was an enormous bowl, but I couldn't get over the sweetness. My kid, who we gave some to really enjoyed it so I guess it's just a matter of taste. As for the tempura, I thought it was fine and did the job, but it didn't blow my mind. Genki Kitchen definitely has some unique and playful items. They are also only open for breakfast and lunch.
This place is a must try!!! Great place to have brunch. The loco moco is the best!! The service was good. This place get busy fast so come early.
Came on a Saturday for brunch. They weren't busy so we were seated after just a few minutes. I'm not sure why there are so many amazing reviews or maybe I just came on an off day but I thought the food was just okay and nothing special. Could use a little more flavor imo. I will also add that I asked for my eggs over easy but they came out as well done sunny side. Eck. Our food also took a looooong time to come out. They weren't even busy and I observed most of the other tables were also waiting a long time for their food. Again, not sure if I came on a bad day, but food took over 50min to come out. That is way too long. I think over time I may decide to try it again, but I do recommend not coming while already starved, especially not with hungry kids.

Eggs Benedict, I didn't ask for the sauce on the side. Wish the sauce was on top and the eggs were runny. The Hollandaise was more of a thick butter consistency, not a sauce. The dish is delicious, but not executed properly. read more

I've been here twice now, and I've loved it each time! This is one of the only places in my list that receives a 10/10 rating. Amazing brunch spot! Starting off with the Genki Loco Moco, it is such a great dish! Price is around $22, but the portion is large. I can eat, but I always take leftovers home. It is presented very beautifully. With a large portion of rice at the bottom, with tornado egg. Topped with green onion and Japanese spice, there is also the Japanese styled hamburger patty (pork and beef). On the side of the meal, there is brown gravy. To top it off, a steak knife, (edible) flower, and salad. My rating for this dish is a 9/10. This is an amazing dish. Each time I come back, I order this dish. I love being able to take more home, and the fusion is flavorful. The customer service was 10/10!!!! The server remembered us even though we were quiet and kept to ourselves. She offered me water and a seat while I waited for my takeout order. Overall very attentive and kind crew. The location is not bad. There are thrift shops around, so if there's ever a wait, you can go thrifting! I never had to wait, so I'm hoping that'll change! Please give this place a try everyone! read more

Visited on a weekday around noon and it was nice and not crowded with a calm setting. Great dining space small but enough to sit and enjoy even a bar table top area. Seated and viewed the minimal menu which offers Bruch items, Udon Noodles , Donburi and appetizers. No kids menu but portions are huge you can share or order couple of side dish items. Ordered their Katsu Chicken and The waffle nut .. chicken was was nice and crispy not over cooked perfect added a side of japanese curry for dipping very yummy. the waffle was crispy and chewy inside tasted like a mochi style waffle served with whipped cream loved it and a side of fruit. Huge portions and glad to find this spot. will certainly return again soon and try other items on the menu. Its a lil pricey but it was delicious! my friends tried the Loco Moco and that also looked yummy. they do have parking and staff are excellent with quick service. read more

My husband and I stopped by for brunch and ordered the shrimp tempura ($14), loco moco ($23) and country fried katsu ($25). As soon as the shrimp tempura came out, it looked suspiciously like the frozen ones you buy from Costco. They weren't good and our server confirmed this was pre-packaged. We asked our server to please take it away. I ordered my loco moco with gravy on the side which they accommodated very graciously. The presentation was very beautiful and the hamburger steak was not dry with decent flavor. I found the tornado egg to be a little over done and the rice extremely dense. I'm assuming this tastes better when absolutely drowned in gravy. The white and regular gravy was very tasty but what gravy isn't? The katsu was perfectly breaded and fried. Probably best tasting out of what we ordered but the dish is extremely rich and heavy with gravy and overly buttered potatoes. This is a very Americanized take on Japanese cuisine - portions are generous and they don't hold back on the gravy and butter. Service was very friendly. Our server quietly removed the charge for the shrimp tempura which was much appreciated but I still feel charging $14 for frozen shrimp tempura is wack. I don't think the quality fits the high price point here and I won't be back. read more
The food was so good and definitely worth checking out. The service we received was excellent; our table was kept clean, refills were prompt, and the ambiance felt just right and very traditional. I liked it. When you walk in, it definitely feels like it has great hospitality. read more

The food is delicious and the environment aesthetics lovely with a delicate wood design for the ceiling. The okonomiyaki is a delicious brunch entree. The ginger topping perfected the dish too. I can't wait to have this again with some other delights too! read more

Just when I think I've had it all, we find a new spot that becomes another favorite! Genki has a fantastic brunch that is worth celebrating! We came in about 10 midweek and it was empty, so we got lots of time to chat with the folks working which was honestly a delight. They were all so friendly and wonderful. The vibes are super comfortable and very perfect for the food served. I had the Okonomiyaki which was a pillowy, savory dream! My husband had the Benedict which was also wonderful, one of the best hollandaise I have ever had! The potatoes were also super yummy. We split some delicious tempura as well! This wonderful little shop is truly a gem! read more
Finally stopped by for a brunch date and my oh my it has become my fav stop ! It was busy even in a Wednesday but we waited not too long to be seated ! Customer service was warm and welcoming ! Everything we order was delicious ! The kaarage chicken was fried perfectly crispy yet juicy! Presentation of both the loco moco and chicken katsu wasnt just beautifully yummy but pack a good wow to my palate ! I'm usually not a gravy /sauce person but Genki made it perfectly balanced I might had to lick the plate Prices were affordable and the portion was generous. See you guys soon read more
Came here on a whim and so glad we did! Their menu is so fun and the service is great. The person who took our order (I think she was the owner) took the time to answer my questions and was very friendly. The food was 100%. Really wish I had a larger stomach to be able to finish my order and also try their other items! Can't wait to go there again! read more

We came here for brunch around 11am, Saturday and it was packed already. We waited for about 5 mins for our table. The waiter came and took our drink orders and once he brought that, another person promptly came to take our order. It took a long time for us to receive our food, approx. an hour! We ordered 2 appetizers and 2 entrees. The best part of our meal was the geso (squid legs). The vegetable tempura wasn't that good and it did not come with tempura sauce. It tasted like soy sauce! The French toast was something less to be desired. The French toast I make at home tastes better. We also got the loco moco and it was very bland. Unfortunately we probably won't come back. read more
Oh so delicious! Family run business. We came on a weekend so their young son adorably and efficiently did the hosting duties seating guests. We ordered the Genki poutine, unagi skillet, and Genki Benedict. Everything was fantastic .. a bit of Japanese/Hawaiian fusion that was wonderfully flavored with generous portions. The house drip coffee actually had flavor! Hoorah!! We got the poutine with curry and it was the perfect combination of savory goodness. The unagi had several large pieces of unagi, sauce, fluffy tornado egg and rice. The Genki Benedict came with spam which I worried about being too salty was it was a well balanced dish. We cleaned all the plates! Service was quick and efficient. The staff is friendly and attentive. I loved this place and you will too! This spot is tucked away in a little strip mall with its own parking lot. We arrived around 9:30 ish and it was not problem finding a place to park. Came here with a group of 4 people on a Saturday morning. It's a small restaurant so there was a bit of a wait but it wasn't too long, about 15-20 minutes. The place is very cutely decorated inside. Trendy and vibrant but not overly stimulating. They offered everybody complementary tea or coffee. Must be a promotion they are running. The coffee was very good. Rich and bold. I'm a bit of a coffee snob and their coffee passed the test for restaurant coffee. They had oatmilk creamer which is kind of rare for a place that does not specialize in coffee. I was very impressed with that option. The food took awhile to come out. No big deal since I was happily sipping coffee and chatting but I could see some people were getting a bit impatient nearby. The Loco Moco was HUGE! My friend can eat but he couldn't finish it and had to take some home. I took a bite and it was very authentic. Came with two types of gravy, country and traditional. Beef patty was well seasoned and moist. The Unagi rice/egg dish was very satisfying. The egg was fluffy and the unagi was what I expected. I had this very similar dish at another local asian fusion breakfast restaurant in Sac and the other place was just a tad bit better. A dallop of roe would have brighten the dish up. The French Toast was just okay. Nothing to write home about. A dusting of powdered sugar would have made the dish more appealing to the eye. It was decent but pretty standard. Service was very friendly and attentive. Staff came by multiple times to check on us and refill our beverages. read more

I had the Eggs Benedict and the Egg was perfectly poached. It comes with a side of potatoes and they were perfectly cooked. Soft in the middle and crunchy on the outside. Just the way I like them! Also ordered a Sake Michelada, which was very different tasting... the Service was impeccable and decor was beautiful. Bathroom was clean and we all enjoyed our meal. There was no parking available in the lot, so I parked on the street, which was free around the area. read more
A strong, solid 3. This place had some positives, but there are some areas in need of improvement. The food was really good (mostly). My wife got chicken and waffle. The waffle had a good texture and taste, as it had coconut inside. The chicken was well made karage...not my favorite style of fried chicken, but she liked it. We shared the French toast. It looked pretty, and had a subtle sweet taste. Nothing mind blowing, but a good rendition. I ordered the salmon skillet. It was good, but...weird. It was a huge mish mash of teriyaki salmon, rice, one giant singular scrambled egg (egg tornado), and a heavily dressed salad. The salmon was cooked well, but it was kind of hard to eat. The salad's dressing was very overpowering, unfortunately. Now then, the service. We were greeted by the "man of the house" (I'm assuming son of the owner, a boy of about 12. However, his wife waited for her food....and waited. I thought they were sharing until her Benedict arrived My wife's chicken and waffle arrived, along with French toast...but my two eggs to go with the French toast, as well as my main course, did not arrive. After 10 minutes, the main course arrived...with my wife already starting to get full. When I reminded them about my missing two eggs, they arrived incorrectly cooked. Restaurants should learn that customers prefer the food served together...and eggs cooked correctly, especially for brunch. 4.5 stars A true family run business with the kids helping out. Service could be a bit slow, so they should consider hiring more people. - Okonomiyaki: unique item that got good reviews by others so I decided to try it. Not like any okonomiyaki I've had before (from Japan or here in cali). There's no protein in it, just the bacon on the side, which wasn't enough. It's just cabbage and too much batter. Very one-noted and on the bland side. - omlette, the meat one lol. Sorry i forgot the name but it had lots of meat. Egg was too thin though. Overall, I thought the items were a tad expensive but love the unique options. I would come back to try something else. read more
Was recommended this spot by a friend! Located in the parking lot with the antique mall. Family owned, everyone was friendly and helpful. Love that they offer complimentary green tea or coffee! We ordered the Genki Loco Moco and the Chicken Katsu and Waffle. Both were so good, would definitely recommend. Their Loco Moco came with a tornado egg and two different gravy's - a brown and a white gravy. I found pieces of bacon with my rice too! Presentation was great! The katsu chicken and waffle came with a side of freshly whipped cream and fresh fruit. The katsu came out perfectly crispy and the coconut waffle was fluffy and not too sweet. Huge portions! We ordered Togo since Genki doesn't have a patio for Lil Lucie. Everyone knows I have to try every Loco Moco I see and Genki's looked fantastic. The scrambled aka Tornado eggs were light and fluffy. The rice was fresh and the patty was delicious. The white and brown gravies brought the dish home. I would definitely order this again. I guess because it was togo there weren't any green onions or spice on my order. The moco is $23 which is fair. The Unagi Skillet was underwhelming. Tornado eggs, rice and bbq eel. The dish needed a sauce to bring the ingredients together. The Unagi Skillet is $27 so we probably wouldn't order this again. Service was friendly and I will likely upgrade their rating when I can try more god dishes in the menu. read more

The food, the service, and the atmosphere were fantastic. Our first time there as we were visiting from San Jose. We arrived for brunch and we had the Chicken Katsu with tornado Egg, the Genki Style Moco Loco, and the Eggs Benedict with Spam on Milk Bread. Each of us enjoyed each breakfast item as well as the coffee. We are definitely coming back the next time we are in Sacramento. Would love to se a Genki Kitchen in San Jose! read more
I adore this place, and it's a whole family affair. The older kids were earning there keep and seating the guest which I LOVE and the food was all amazing and unique. Service was great and the space was nice and open. The loco moco had a fusion of gravy's that paired nicely and was yummy. The team and owner provide excellent service and make you feel welcomed in, like you're part of the family. My husband and I had such an amazing experience here! From the moment we walked in, we felt genuinely welcomed and very well treated. As young Mexicans, it can honestly be hard to find places where we feel comfortable and don't feel like we're being rushed out, so the way the owner treated us really stood out. He was incredibly kind, attentive, and made us feel right at home. I seriously can't emphasize enough how welcoming he was to both of us. The food was just as amazing. Everything tasted extremely fresh, the portions were GREAT, and nothing was greasy. Nothing tasted high in sodium which is what I really try to stay away from. I have an extremely sensitive stomach, so I'm always a little nervous trying new places, but the food didn't bother my stomach at all. It's also hard to find a brunch spot where the prices actually feel worth it, but this is definitely one of them. I got the Country Fried Katsu for $24.99, and it was 100% worth the price for the amount of food you get, the quality, and the service. My husband and I will absolutely be coming back and recommending this place to our friends and family. This is definitely going to be our new brunch spot. Between the food, portions, and especially how welcomed the owner made us feel, this restaurant deserves ALL the stars! read more

Im a pretty fan of loco mocos and had my share around the city and out of area (like hawaii). So my review focuses on this. Some feedback on the dish. Rice was too clumped, packed, and smooshed together. I'm generally a fan of fluffy rice and the rice felt like biting into an uneven rice bread. Hard to discern texture of rice for me. Two gravies. 75% brown. 25% white. Would've preferred just brown. Nice mushroom flavor notes. Tornado egg was unremarkable for me and hard to enjoy its textures with how off textures were. Textures were off. Lettuce was an odd spot and i could appreciate that more compared to my loco moco. Presentation wise, flower is a bit extra for me. The dish does look great though. Nice textures and a pleasing visual composition. Big fan of competition and a great brunch scene. I hope to experience a dish here again but the version of the loco moco i had wasnt it. I hope to visit again after some changes to this well known to me dish. I would prefer to unscore this review as this is a new place and the economy isn't kind. But no choice here. Staff was very friendly and welcoming, server was so sweet and attentive! We ordered the teriyaki bowl, and it was really good! Flavor was there, would recommend to ask for teriyaki sauce on the side - it got a bit soggy and was a little too much. Overall the smokiness from the chicken was good! Genki Kitchen is located where Evan's and Kau Kau used to be. Lots of parking there but it usually gets full around lunch time. Lunch time the place gets busy too but after around 1:30 there's less of a wait time to sit down. My wife and I just happened to look for brunch places since we wanted to try new places and saw Genki took over the spot. It looked like it'll have a unique brunch menu so we had to check out. On our first visit we ordered 3 different items that sounded good on the menu because it's either we like the food and come back or we don't if what we got was not good. We ordered the Genki Benedict, Genki Loco Moco and the Country Fried Katsu on our first visit. The Benedict was absolutely delicious with the yuzu sauce and spam. The Shoku pan under all of that just elevated it and it was one of our favorites. The Loco Moco had two gravies that were white and brown with a perfectly cooked patty that wasn't mushy and had good texture. I got the sunny side egg on top of that. The country fried katsu had great texture with the gravy that was great as well. On our second visit we got the loco Moco again but with a tornado egg to switch it up and it'll be hard to choose between that and the sunny side next time I come. Next the GyuDon my son got and he said was great but I didn't get to try it since he finished it before I could get a bite . Also got the Curry Katsu Chicken Don and server let me know I had the option to do gravy instead so my big back went with the gravy and I'd do it again. Overall 9.5 out of 10 and we will come back here often. I believe Dan the owner talked to us on the second visit and he seemed like a great guy. read more
