My husband and I had such an amazing experience here! From the moment we walked in, we felt genuinely welcomed and very well treated. As young Mexicans, it can honestly be hard to find places where we feel comfortable and don't feel like we're being rushed out, so the way the owner treated us really stood out. He was incredibly kind, attentive, and made us feel right at home. I seriously can't emphasize enough how welcoming he was to both of us. The food was just as amazing. Everything tasted extremely fresh, the portions were GREAT, and nothing was greasy. Nothing tasted high in sodium which is what I really try to stay away from. I have an extremely sensitive stomach, so I'm always a little nervous trying new places, but the food didn't bother my stomach at all. It's also hard to find a brunch spot where the prices actually feel worth it, but this is definitely one of them. I got the Country Fried Katsu for $24.99, and it was 100% worth the price for the amount of food you get, the quality, and the service. My husband and I will absolutely be coming back and recommending this place to our friends and family. This is definitely going to be our new brunch spot. We had SUCH a good experience at Genki Kitchen. It's one of those places where you can immediately tell there's a lot of love behind what they're doing, and knowing it's family-owned made it even better. We definitely ordered enough to get a real feel for the menu and honestly, everything was so good. The Loco Moco was one of my favorites because we tried it with both the brown AND white gravy. The brown gravy was rich, savory and super comforting, but the white gravy surprised me the most because it almost tasted like a creamy clam chowder. I was not expecting that at all, but it worked SO well with the dish. The Katsu Chicken & Waffles was another standout. The chicken was perfectly crispy on the outside and still juicy, and the waffle was fluffy with just enough sweetness. We found out their son had made the waffle batter fresh that morning, along with the whipped cream, and I swear details like that make you appreciate the food even more. The French Toast was beautiful and tasted just as good as it looked. Soft, rich, slightly sweet, with fresh fruit and that homemade whipped cream on top. Definitely one of those dishes everyone at the table keeps taking bites from. We also tried the Beef Udon, which was exactly what I wanted after all the sweet brunch flavors. Tender beef, chewy noodles and a warm, savory broth that was so comforting. And the Japanese Michelada was such a fun surprise. Savory, refreshing, a little spicy and just different enough from a traditional michelada to make it memorable. One of the things I really loved about Genki beyond the food is how intentional they are about supporting other local Sacramento businesses and specialty producers. We're in the Farm-to-Fork Capital, so I LOVE seeing a local family-owned restaurant put that into practice and keep that support within the community. We arrived for brunch and we had the Chicken Katsu with tornado Egg, the Genki Style Moco Loco, and the Eggs Benedict with Spam on Milk Bread. Genki has a lot of potential to do well, although there is still some room for improvement. I really like their Hawaiian-Japanese fusion brunch concept and the menu is straight forward and simple. The Genki Benedict was served without the yuzu hollandaise sauce, which I didn't realize until after the fact. That was partly my fault for not bringing it up, so I didn't get the full experience of the dish. I'm sure it would've tasted even better with the sauce. The potatoes were also a bit cold. The butter, however, was nice and creamy. The Ika Geso was good, lightly battered and fried just the way I prefer and the sauce paired well with it. The Country Fried Katsu was also good, but again, the potatoes were cold. The Curry Chicken Katsu Don was probably the best dish. Overall, the prices are reasonable, the place is clean, and the staff was welcoming. I'd definitely give Genki another try, especially since the concept has a lot of potential. read more

Genki Kitchen is a unique brunch spot that serves up Japanese inspired brunch and lunch items. It's in a nice and cozy space that can get quite busy. I found the service to be excellent and friendly. The servers were quick as well. On my visit to Genki I had the opportunity to try the loco moco, udon, and tempura. The loco moco was good and came with a good amount of food. It was also presented nicely. They do the thing where it comes with the knife stabbed into the top of the food. There's also a pretty flower on the top that I think is just there for decoration. It's not necessary, but makes for a pretty photo. The best thing about the loco moco was the hamburger on the top. I found it to be of good quality and size - it's not one of those skinny fast food patties. The only thing I wasn't a fan of with the dish was the sauces, which I found to be a bit heavy handed and rich. Eventually all the rice was soggy. As for the udon, I personally found the broth to be much too sweet for my liking. It was an enormous bowl, but I couldn't get over the sweetness. My kid, who we gave some to really enjoyed it so I guess it's just a matter of taste. As for the tempura, I thought it was fine and did the job, but it didn't blow my mind. I'm not sure why there are so many amazing reviews or maybe I just came on an off day but I thought the food was just okay and nothing special. Could use a little more flavor imo. I will also add that I asked for my eggs over easy but they came out as well done sunny side. Eck. Our food also took a looooong time to come out. They weren't even busy and I observed most of the other tables were also waiting a long time for their food. Again, not sure if I came on a bad day, but food took over 50min to come out. As soon as the shrimp tempura came out, it looked suspiciously like the frozen ones you buy from Costco. They weren't good and our server confirmed this was pre-packaged. I'm assuming this tastes better when absolutely drowned in gravy. The white and regular gravy was very tasty but what gravy isn't? The katsu was perfectly breaded and fried. Probably best tasting out of what we ordered but the dish is extremely rich and heavy with gravy and overly buttered potatoes. This is a very Americanized take on Japanese cuisine - portions are generous and they don't hold back on the gravy and butter. Service was very friendly. Our server quietly removed the charge for the shrimp tempura which was much appreciated but I still feel charging $14 for frozen shrimp tempura is wack. The waffle had a good texture and taste, as it had coconut inside. The chicken was well made karage...not my favorite style of fried chicken, but she liked it. We shared the French toast. It looked pretty, and had a subtle sweet taste. Nothing mind blowing, but a good rendition. I ordered the salmon skillet. It was good, but...weird. It was a huge mish mash of teriyaki salmon, rice, one giant singular scrambled egg (egg tornado), and a heavily dressed salad. The salmon was cooked well, but it was kind of hard to eat. The salad's dressing was very overpowering, unfortunately. Now then, the service. We were greeted by the "man of the house" (I'm assuming son of the owner, a boy of about 12. He out down his phone, and sat us. Family owned, I assume. One issue affected not just us, but the table next to us...and a big issue. When we were sat, the table next to us received their loco moco. However, his wife waited for her food....and waited. I thought they were sharing until her Benedict arrived My wife's chicken and waffle arrived, along with French toast...but my two eggs to go with the French toast, as well as my main course, did not arrive. After 10 minutes, the main course arrived...with my wife already starting to get full. When I reminded them about my missing two eggs, they arrived incorrectly cooked. Restaurants should learn that customers prefer the food served together...and eggs cooked correctly, especially for brunch. Oh so delicious! Family run business. We came on a weekend so their young son adorably and efficiently did the hosting duties seating guests. We ordered the Genki poutine, unagi skillet, and Genki Benedict. Everything was fantastic .. a bit of Japanese/Hawaiian fusion that was wonderfully flavored with generous portions. Came here with a group of 4 people on a Saturday morning. It's a small restaurant so there was a bit of a wait but it wasn't too long, about 15-20 minutes. The place is very cutely decorated inside. Trendy and vibrant but not overly stimulating. They offered everybody complementary tea or coffee. Must be a promotion they are running. The coffee was very good. Rich and bold. I'm a bit of a coffee snob and their coffee passed the test for restaurant coffee. They had oatmilk creamer which is kind of rare for a place that does not specialize in coffee. I was very impressed with that option. The food took awhile to come out. No big deal since I was happily sipping coffee and chatting but I could see some people were getting a bit impatient nearby. The Loco Moco was HUGE! My friend can eat but he couldn't finish it and had to take some home. I took a bite and it was very authentic. Came with two types of gravy, country and traditional. Beef patty was well seasoned and moist. The Unagi rice/egg dish was very satisfying. The egg was fluffy and the unagi was what I expected. I had this very similar dish at another local asian fusion breakfast restaurant in Sac and the other place was just a tad bit better. A dallop of roe would have brighten the dish up. Im a pretty fan of loco mocos and had my share around the city and out of area (like hawaii). So my review focuses on this. Some feedback on the dish. Rice was too clumped, packed, and smooshed together. I'm generally a fan of fluffy rice and the rice felt like biting into an uneven rice bread. Hard to discern texture of rice for me. Two gravies. 75% brown. 25% white. Would've preferred just brown. Nice mushroom flavor notes. Tornado egg was unremarkable for me and hard to enjoy its textures with how off textures were. Textures were off. Lettuce was an odd spot and i could appreciate that more compared to my loco moco. Presentation wise, flower is a bit extra for me. The dish does look great though. Nice textures and a pleasing visual composition. Big fan of competition and a great brunch scene. I hope to experience a dish here again but the version of the loco moco i had wasnt it. Not busy on a Monday afternoon so really hoping they are busier at other times as the food was very good and I hope that they stay around for a while. Genki Kitchen is located where Evan's and Kau Kau used to be. Lots of parking there but it usually gets full around lunch time. Lunch time the place gets busy too but after around 1:30 there's less of a wait time to sit down. My wife and I just happened to look for brunch places since we wanted to try new places and saw Genki took over the spot. It looked like it'll have a unique brunch menu so we had to check out. On our first visit we ordered 3 different items that sounded good on the menu because it's either we like the food and come back or we don't if what we got was not good. We ordered the Genki Benedict, Genki Loco Moco and the Country Fried Katsu on our first visit. The Benedict was absolutely delicious with the yuzu sauce and spam. The Shoku pan under all of that just elevated it and it was one of our favorites. The Loco Moco had two gravies that were white and brown with a perfectly cooked patty that wasn't mushy and had good texture. I got the sunny side egg on top of that. The country fried katsu had great texture with the gravy that was great as well. On our second visit we got the loco Moco again but with a tornado egg to switch it up and it'll be hard to choose between that and the sunny side next time I come. Next the GyuDon my son got and he said was great but I didn't get to try it since he finished it before I could get a bite . Also got the Curry Katsu Chicken Don and server let me know I had the option to do gravy instead so my big back went with the gravy and I'd do it again. My bf said it felt like he was invited into someone's home and they fed him homemade cooking. I had to try the loco moco and they do not play with the portion. After seeing Genki featured on several Instagram accounts, my curiousity was piqued. My sister and I came for brunch around 10 am on a Saturday. The place was small but we easily got a table. At first, we could not decide what to get because everything sounded so good. We finally settled on the Loco Moco because we never turn down a chance to try this dish when we see it on the menu. The second dish was a Curry Katsu Chicken-Don. While both dishes were great, but the Loco Moco was our favorite. Instead of a fried egg, they opted for a tornado egg over rice. The hamburger patty was definitely homemade and topped with two different gravies: brown and white. It was served with pickled ginger. The dish was pretty rich but having the pickled items cut some of the richness down without diluting the savory flavors of the dish. Service was exceptional. As soon as we walked in, a young gentleman greeted and seated us right away. He offered us complimentary tea after he sat us. The weather was chilly that day and the tea hit the spot. The owner and several other staff members came by our table. Not just to ask if we need anything but seem to genuinely care about our feedback. It was really nice to be able to interact with the owner. He invited us back and we did a couple weeks later. We got the Loco Moco again on our second visit as well as the Okonomiyaki, a savory pancake topped with an egg, bacon and pickled ginger. Once again, the Loco Moco stole the show. The okonomiyaki seemed more like a fritata, but still very tasty. I cannot wait to come back and bring my friends. It's located where Kau Kau used to be. We NEED more asian fusion brunch spots in Sacramento and Genki has answered. We just had brunch here this morning and it's such a feel-good spot with top notch customer service. We were checked on multiple times, offered recommendations, and wholesome vibes all around. I highly recommend everyone to give this spot a try. I had the chicken katsu and waffle nut- the herb butter on the waffle is seriously out of this world. I also liked that the cream was on the side and the fruits were fresh, sweet, and juicy. My friend had the french toast and she loved it. Dan, the owner, told us that the bread is locally sourced from Mahoroba and that made me 100000% happier. Not only are they supporting local but I LOVE Mahoroba. It's our go-to before our zoo dates. Parking was easy as this restaurant is in a plaza with other niche stores- it felt very safe. We arrived early on a Saturday. Owners Dan and Nancy greeted us warmly for their soft opening weekend. We ordered the chicken coconut cream waffles and the okonomiyaki. - the coconut cream waffles were really great. The coconut cream that we got on the side was especially delicious with the chicken and waffles. I would say the chicken could be slightly juicier, but other than that this dish was hit with both of us. - the okonomiyaki had a nice flavor with the traditional sauce and egg pancake. The bacon and fried egg on top was a nice spin on the traditional dish. I felt the cake would be better with a less "formed" shape and some noodles (the W ay I've had it in the past. Overall we really liked what we tried. A big "thank you" for the complementary tea and white peach mimosa!
